Aristoteles Logic Synth #4: Logic Gates

Published on Jan 15, 2015 Dani Dögenigt

"This module for my lo-fi logic modular synth has 8 AND gates: the output only goes high when both of the 2 inputs are HIGH. This way we can generate the simplest form of amplitude modulation where the osc input with the lowest frequency lets the other input through. The video demonstrates it all.

Schematic and thorough explanation can be found on my site:

Korg Monopoly, Elektron Octatrack and Analog 4

Published on Jan 15, 2015 Dylan Nau

"Here I have the Octatrack sequencing the Mono/Poly utilizing the Midipoly kit which lets me play the Korg with midi and I can play it paraphonically which can be pretty sweet! Using velocity numbers, I can choose which voice plays on the Monopoly. Drums are on the Octatrack and and I have the Korg running into the A4. Melody and a little bassline I have sequenced on the A4. For those who don't know the A4 is the little black box on the left, the Octatrack which serves as the brain, is the small box on the right.

HARMS MAC16 MIDI Analog Converter

Here's one from obscure synth history. I found this on Florian Anwander's website when updating this post.  This is the first post on MATRIXSYNTH to ever feature the HARMS brand.

"The Harms MAC16 is a rare MIDI-to-CV/Gate converter which was made by a small one man company Harms in Hamburg Germany in the late nineties. The original price was around 1250 Deutschmarks (about 600 Euro). It provides 16 channels, which can be configured for any kind of MIDI to analog conversion. Basically there are five modes:

VCO (CV) - which converts note data, pitchbend into either Oct/V or Hz/V Voltage. Portamento can be added. There is also the possibility of microtuning, octave spread (for mistuned or non standard synths!), pitch offset and keyboardsplit zones

VCF - converts basically the note info into a voltage; then a SoftEnvelope, a SoftLFO, and one MIDI controller (modwheel or aftertouch) can be added; the amount of the envelope and/or the controller can be controlled by the velocity of the corresponding note. The converter channel can get its information either from a MIDI channel in general (using the last note) or can be assigned to a dedicated VCO-channel for polyphonic setups (* see below); keyboard splitzones are possible

VCA - same as VCF, only with other name

Aux - same as VCF, only with other name

Lite - similar as VCF, but no assignment to a dedicated VCO

Gate/Trigger - creates a gate (positive or inverted) from a note on event. Again it can use either the last note information from all notes of one MIDI-Channel or it can be assigned to a dedicated VCO-channel for polyphonic setups (* see below); splitzones are possible too of course
DIN-Sync out from MIDI-Clock"

See Florian Anwander's page on the Harms MAC16 for a pdf of the manual and more.

This is the only BMD-700 I have ever seen for sale. There was a general post on the BME-700 back in 2006 here, and there was actually a software emulation of the BME-700 posted here. There is only one other BME post which features the Rattlesnake here.

This is as rare as it gets.

Googlish:

"The Spirit is working properly and is in very good technical and optical condition

This is a real rarity only very few prototypes were made by the Dutch manufacturer E-pro.

Epro was a Dutch producer who had also built the little-known and lesser "Minisynth"

Wurdem built by Minisynth still about 40 h, the Spirit was but a few prototypes much less frequently (not to be confused with Crumar Spirit)

Chord-Trigger for Korg Polysix and Poly61

Chord-Trigger for Korg Polysix and Poly61 from Florian Anwander on Vimeo.

"This is a demo of an addon module for the Korg Polysix and the Korg Poly61. The addon establishes a trigger input, which triggers the played voices of the synth if an external trigger signal is provided. If no cable is inserted in the trigger input, the synth will behave normally.

This is still a prototype, and the final version will look a little bit different. The addon module will be available as kit and as complete module.

To add the module to the Polysix/Poly61 good skills in desoldering chips are required. It is easily possible to remove the kit and to bring the synth back to the original state.

If you are interested in the module, please visit http://fa.utfs.org/diy/korgpolysix/. As soon as I will have the final version, I will announce it there."

CME Xkey37 Arrives in Time for NAMM

Announced last year at the Musikmesse, it appears the CME Xkey37 poly aftertouch keyboard controller is finally arriving.

Aside from the extra octave, the Xkey37 adds a new Xport connector for:

MIDI OUT (DIN-5 through Xcable).
Sustain Pedal input (6.35mm (1/4") jack through Xcable).
Expression Pedal input (6.35mm (1/4") jack through Xcable).

Note the original Xkey was USB only.  The new MIDI cable should make using the Xkey37 with stand alone desktop synths possible, however being USB bus powered, I'm guessing you will have to have it connected to a USB power source at the same time.

Dimensions

Width: 553 mm (21.77 in)
Height: 135 mm (5.31 in)
Depth: 16 mm (0.62 in)
Weight: only 880 g (1.94 lb) - 20% lighter than a 11-inch MacBook Air!

All Connected #7 & #8 Announced

"2 new dates are announced in the Al Connected series at Ancienne Belgique, Huis23, Brussels.

The series involves concerts, films, readings and instrument presentations with and about artists who play with the language of ‘voltage control’, who use the ‘modular’ as creative thought process and test musical limits with it, artists who work in the spirit of San Francisco Tape Music Centre.

On February 8 we’ll have Jenny Gräf Sheppard who’ll play a live set on, and provide explanation about, her Ciat-Lonbarde instrument. Peter Beyls will let us hear a number of old tape pieces and explain his work. And to make the evening complete, we'll be screening a number of short films by Lilian Schwartz, one of the pioneers of video- and computer art.

All info here.

On March 1 we focus upon 3 unique synths that have helped to define the history of electronic music.
Thomas Lehn play an improvised set on his EMS Synthi AKS, Kraus comes with his homemade Serge Modulaire Synth and Guy Drieghe will play a live set on 3 Buchla Music Easels.

All info here."

"3VCOs: VCO1 and 2 have saw, pulse, triangle and sine waveforms and the pulse width can be voltage controlled by external CVs. A low frequency noise with level control is available as well. VCO 1 can hard sync VCO2. VCO3 can be used as a modulation oscillator and can be disconnected from the master CV. Modulation targets are filter cutoff frequency and/or pitch of VCOs1and2. All VCOs have individual outputs, coarse and fine frequency controls, separate CV inputs for controlling frequency and pre-filter level controls.

The filter is a Moog 24dB lowpass filter. It´s input is a mixture of all three VCOs and noise. The cutoff frequency can be controlled by the first envelope generator as well as by an external CV. The filtertracking is switchable between off / half / full (0%, 1V/oct and 1.5V/oct).

The envelopes are ADSRs with a switchable release parameter thats time is depending on the decay parameter, just like the Minimoog. The filter envelope can be also used to control VCO2´s pitch what sounds great when VCO2 is synchronised. Furthermore you can invert this envelope´s characteristic. The second envelope modulates the VCA. If an external CV is patched to the VCA the internal modulation is broken up. A momentary button allows for manual triggering of the envelopes"

Looks absolutely stunning, custom painted in gloss white and heritage green. Immaculate, detailed workmanship and quality components. Built to last.

Demo:
Circuit Bent / Modified Yamaha RX-17 MIDI Drum Machine Percussion Module
(Note that this demo was made prior to painting).

Modified with 7x switches.
Drum Machine will function as normal when all 7x switches are in the off position, but when on you will find ring-modded/vocoded sounds, pitch related effects, bizarre filters, odd synthesis, rhythmic drum varations and much more!!

Use switches individually or in combination. Designed so as not to crash so you can really go to town and find some mind blowing rhythms and tones.

Play via MIDI controller/ sequencer or use the on-board drum pads and preset rhythms to make the sounds - and then let the circuit bent switches work their magic!

If you're into making weird, wonderful, exciting, contemporary styles of music (i.e. ambient, noise, jazz, IDM, Dubstep, D&B, unclassifiable etc) - that's a bit out of the box, then this is definitely for you.

Comes with power adapter.

So after all was hooked up I started fiddling with the volca keys and this melody started speaking to me...

Not my normal type of tune, but I felt this needed sharing. Play it loud, alone and in the dark

The only synth used is the KORG Volca Keys, nothing more nothing less, For FX I used the Jomox T-resonator on reverb setting + the KORG kaoss pad which is sort of building the rhythm with a motion recorded Grain delay.
