Patch 15

Published on Jan 18, 2016 Tunç Çakır

"Random Patch..."

Great patch form Tunç Çakır who brought us these videos posted earlier. Try to listen in stereo and on a decent system for all the nuance. The Elektron Drummachine is used only as a midi sequencer and gate signal for both the Pittsburgh Modular system & Eventide PitchFactor. Pittsburgh's audio goes into the PitchFactor.

An imaginary character, here presented as a top hat, rides a bicycle, crossing landscapes taken from English prints of the eighteenth century, persevered in the British Library. In the background we see St John’s College, St Saviours Church and Cambridge, animated and resonating with light and shadows, offering up a playful tale between abstraction and reality.

Microkorg Effects Machine Tutorial Part 2

Published on Mar 31, 2016 Todd Smith

"In my second Microkorg tutorial I'll go even deeper on how use this device as a effects unit. I'll show you how the Microkorg can effect sounds with it's Filter, Amp, EQ, Delay and MOD FX sections. I'll also show you how to sustain the audio with the ARP instead of having to hold down the key like in the first tutorial. In this video the Microkorg processes the Korg Volca Bass and Arturia Microbrute. The effects used on the Microkorg are Delay with added Phaser at the end of the video."

Bastl Instruments Introduces New Products at Superbooth16

via Bastl Instruments

"We are proud to present 3 fresh additions to our modular lineup: D ynamo, T romsø and Hendrikson. Thanks to these modules we were also able to create new complete modular systems focused on signal processing: B ob a nd Bobek a nd an upgrade to our flagship modular system R umburack 2.0. We will also present more new modules: Popcorn, Dupdup, Clutch and Ciao! previewed at NAMM in January. Come to meet us in the Foyer of Funkhaus booth number BF500!

Dynamo is dynamics analyser and fake t hruzero modulator. It combines an Envelope Follower and a comparator which, when combined with a fullwave rectifier output and Compressor CV curve generator, allows you to make a compressor from any VCA (think of tube or vactrol). The other trick of the Dynamo is a voltage controlled switch section which combines with the full wave rectifier and comparator to allow you to create deep “fake thruzero modulations” with anything you like!

Tromsø is made of 3 modules: VCO, Comparator and Sample & Hold. Internal normalisation allows you to instantly use it as voltage controllable analog downsampler (or sample rate reducer if you like). This module is inspired by a machine called Distortotron by Psybe made in 1994 which is arguably the first analog downsampler and bit distortion of its kind. This machine was commissioned by Mental Overdrive for his album Plugged from 1995 which will be rereleased this year at Rett i Fletta.

Hendrikson is a guitar/ instrument amplifier and an interface for external effects processors such as stomp boxes. The most unique feature is the mix output which is a CV controllable crossfader between the signal that goes to the Output and signal that comes from the Input. This means that when used with external effects processor it gives CV control of one of the most important parameters the Dry / Wet Mix.

Rumburack 2.0 is a compact yet powerful modular system with analog punch and digital charm. Its advanced sequencing abilities make it a self contained performance instrument that is ready to go on tour with you!

Bob and Bobek are analog processing modular systems designed with live performance in mind. Instrument amplifier input and line / guitar level output make it so universal that it can work in any setup. Both modular cases have a bottom insert for standard microphone stand which makes them look great on the stage! In comparison Bob has far more modulation sources, foot interfaces and more external connections via additional Hendrikson.

Pricing and availability: all shipping early June 2016, prices excluding VAT

Dynamo 5HP, dynamics & more, 109 eur
Tromsø 5HP, analog downsampler & more, 109 eur
Hendrikson 5HP, stomp box / instrument interface, 109 eur
Rumburack 2.0 compact and powerful modular system, 2149 eur
Bobek analog signal processing system, 659 eur
Bob advanced analog signal processing system, 1239 eur

"Dynamo is combination of 3 utility modules: envelope follower, comparator and voltage controlled switch. It combines Envelope Follower and comparator to extract gate from the envelope. On top of that there is full-wave rectifier output |EF IN| and Compressor CV curve generator.

When the Compressor CV is plugged into CV input of a VCA with offset and attenuator knobs you get an Compressor! Threshold knob on Dynamo sets the compressor threshold, Offset on the VCA sets the gain and the attenuator on the CV input sets the ratio of compression (which can also go negative). This allows you to create compressor type of effect from anything: VCA, tube module, VCF or anything that comes to your rack!

The other trick of the Dynamo is the voltage controlled switch section in combination with the full-wave rectifier and comparator. All pre-normalised and for what reason ? Make “fake thru-zero modulation” with anything you like! Define what happens when the negative modulation is happening and adjust the zero crossing point with CV. The whole world of very deep modulations is waiting for you now…

… and it is totally bonkers!"

"Own a piece of synth history with the rare Jen SM2007 String Machine.

The String Ensemble is one of the earliest and unique string machines of the mid 70s
like the ARP Solina, Logan String Melody, Roland VP330 and others.
The Jen SM2007 was bought and rebranded by the Thomas Organ Company as the VOX String Thing.
Eventually this original technology was acquired by Crumar and eventually ARP, but very little is known about
this rare Italian analogue machine.

GForce Software, famous for their emulations of vintage synths in plug in format like the ARP Oddity, ARP2600, ImpOscar and
many others, have also created an emulation of the JEN SM2007 in their Virtual String Machine Expansion Pack.

This is the grand daddy of all string synths of 70's and 80's. Once you play it you will see how lush the sound is of the string ensemble.

The synth has organ section, violin, viola, and cello, and ensemble for all of the sections with auto or manual sustain and attack.
You can also adjust the tone of the sound from thin to rich and warm.

All keys work perfectly as well as the selector buttons.
The sliders aren't as smooth as they used to be but they are fully operational with no crackling.
The wood panels have some dings and the main body shows signs of age.
See the photos."

If you look at the Pioneer DJ website you will see a number of DJ products featuring multi-colored pads as seen in the graphic although in much more limited layouts. This is DJ product so a good guess would be DSI's filter and/or effects integrated into one or more of their products. As for the number of pads in the graphic? We'll find out soon enough. If you have any guesses feel free to leave a comment. Note Dave Smith will be at the Pioneer booth daily noon to 5PM Thursday April 7 - Saturday April 9.

Electribe 2, Bass Station II, Monotribe - live hardware drum & bass

Published on Mar 30, 2016 Matt Greer

"Live hardware Drum and Bass - korg electribe, monotribe & novation bass station 2

Hello,

So, I've been contemplating selling my Electribe 2. I've been a little unsure about this so I decided to give it a little more use before I made my decision. I arrived at this.

Ah, yes, Drum & Bass. My oldest, deep passion in electronic music. Actually, for me, it started with Breakbeat Hardcore then Jungle then DnB. Basically, I've watched it grow through many transformations over the years. Always loved it. Funny to me that the basic style has been around for 20+ years yet it still holds surprises.

As such, my own DnB tends to be a bit of a fusion. It's always a tad slower (166 BPM here) than the new stuff (old school jungle was a bit slower) and I tend to mash different styles together. Incidentally, I'm also working on an alternate mix of this track with Ragga style vocals.

So.. here we are. I made a jungle-ish, jazz step-ish, smooth-ish, ragga-ish, atmospheric-ish Drum and Bass kind of thing. Hope everyone likes it, even the NON-old school-jungle-heads. ;)"

Watch Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith bring her modular orchestra to life

Published on Mar 30, 2016 FACTmagazine

See this post for Kaitlyn's upcoming release on April 1st. Click here and scroll down for more posts featuring Kaitlyn's work.

"The electronic composer invites us to her LA home for an intimate performance.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has become one of the most fascinating champions of modular synthesis in recent memory — but she didn’t start out that way.

Raised on Orcas Island in northwest Washington state and classically trained in guitar and piano, Smith spent a curiosity-fueled year teaching herself synthesis after a serendipitous encounter with the Buchla Music Easel, an instrument that’s come to define her as much as she has defined it.

Her explorations in synthesis reach an apex on her stunning new album EARS, out April 1 on Western Vinyl, blending woodwind and her own vocals with the primordial sounds of the Buchla to make her most definitive statement yet.

After recently relocating to Los Angeles, Smith invited FACT to her home studio where she showed us the different synthesizer voices used to create her modular symphonies before churning them together in a spontaneous improvisation.

The intimate home performance serves as a taster for her show on April 1 at Rewire Festival in the Hague, Netherlands, where she’ll play the city’s Lutheran Church with Chris Watson and Kara-Lis Coverdale + MFO."

-Hold a tune button to engage the “feeding process” (left button for channel 1, right for channel 2).

-Adjust a knob to the desired pitch (left knob for channel 1, right for channel 2).

So long as a tune button is held, the output is automatically changed as you move the knob

-Release the button, pitch information is stored to Eeprom

You can toggle between free scaling and semi-tone increment modes by pressing both tune buttons simultaneously.

Play it:
Press a pad to trigger both gate and cv outputs

Hold 2 or more pads and Cells will arpeggiate, the rate can now be changed with the left knob. The right knob changes the octave range.

Sequence it:
Sequence the cells using the 2 trigger inputs. The left input shifts up a row and the right input shifts right by one column

The gate outputs mirror the trigger inputs.

Cells requires +5V DC power to operate, as well as +/- 12V . On-board 12V to 5V conversion is provided if 5V isn’t available in your system. This is configured via a jumper on the rear of the module"

DSI Pro 2: some paraphonic patches

Published on Mar 30, 2016 Hermisphere

"It seems there are not so many videos demonstrating the Pro 2's paraphonic mode in practice, so I dialed up a few paraphonic patches which I've programmed for use in my productions for the past few months.

The Pro 2 has unexpectedly become the centerpiece of my studio, and yet it seems to be such an underrated and misunderstood synthesizer. I will surely post more videos of it soon.

All the sounds in this video were recorded straight from the Pro 2 via an RME UFX into Reaper and no further processing or external effects."

Modular Minutes: Kasleder Effects - Acid Fuzz In Context

Published on Mar 30, 2016 Analogue Zone Showroom / Synths and Studio

http://www.analoguezone.com

"In this episode of the Modular Minutes series, we took a look at how fuzz can spice up a drum machine + chord sequence while being modulated with audio gain-based signals via a simple envelope follower. The drums come from a Vermona DRM-1 MKIII, while the chords are a blend of a Quantum Rainbow by SSF and a Russian string synth (Elektronika EM-25). Fuzz out is being 50% dry/wet mixed on an outboard mixer (adding some reverb here and there) and also is filtered by Doepfer's finest filters (all the filter and fuzz parameters are controlled simultaneously via an LS1 Lightstrip!). As you see, the Kasleder Acid Fuzz can be decently integrated into a musical context, and can be soft, shredding and everything in between! Signals can be tamed with the Feedback switch and knob as well.

Bastl POPCORN Preview (Superbooth 2016) ! #TTNM

Published on Mar 30, 2016 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Here's a preview of the upcoming Bastl Instruments Popcorn Eurorack sequencer, first introduced at NAMM 2016!
The Popcorn sequencer is an 8-step CV&Gate sequencer, that offers lots of playback flexibility, using its many CV control modes.

From the Bastl Instruments website::
Compact, but incredibly musical sequencer / quantizer / arpeggiator – you name it! Popcorn sequencer embraces the idea of making selection of 8 notes that can be browsed in many different ways. It all just depends on the signals you feed it with. It is incredibly musical when used with rhythm sequencer such as Knit Rider because it has two triggers A and B which will go 1,2,3, or 4 steps forward or backward depending on the settings of the dedicated knobs. You can also address the steps with CV or 3 binary gates. You can use CV to transpose the pitch or transpose it in a quantized way or change minor major settings of the quantizer with gate.

Mutable Instruments Peaks & Warps: A Non-Musical Experimental Test

Published on Mar 29, 2016 Genshi Media Group

"WARNING! This is a completely non-musical experimental test that I recorded just for my own self. On the off chance that there are a small handful of people that might be interested in this, I made it Public as well. If it's NOT what you are looking for, and/or you don't like it, then JUST MOVE ON! No need to down vote it! Details are as follows:

I received the Mutable Instruments Peaks and Warps today and just wanted to test out what they actually do and how they interact with my other modules (particularly Braids and Clouds as well as Radio Music by Music Thing Modular.) I had Ableton Live running and my iPhone video recording so I can capture the various tests. Most of it is crap! But the point of it, for me, was to see (and hear) how they all work together. I tried out the various modes (sorry, don't even remember which ones) as well as the alternative "Parasites" firmware in Warps towards the end. There were, of course, some exceptional moments as well... only after I stopped recording, unfortunately. :-(

As with my previous videos, my next one will be back to the more musical style that my viewers are use to..."

Analog Synthesizer Demo by Rik Marston
***Watch in HD!***

I just got home from my vacation in Colorado
& I had to play the Arp Odyssey! It is a true
sound design tool and a blast to play!!!
The demo volume starts low then builds up higher, so look out!!!
I ran it thru my autographed Art MultiVerb LT from music legend Steve Schiff
(Composer, Bass, Guitar for The Nina Hagen Band, Simple Minds, Billy Idol, Pointer Sisters, Foreigner, Charlie Sexton & MORE!) then ran that thru Simple Delay Groove FX on LIVE 7.
The ART MultiVerb LT's MIX slider is a bit buzzy so
I am sorry for the distortion clipping & a bit of noise.
But I was coming down from the Colorado TRIP so...
I'd say watch you speakers/headphones for noise.
It gets a bit buzzy at times but I try to correct it QUICK.
LOL. Had fun tweaking anyway!"

New Stomper Eurorack Module From Syinsi

soundmachines to Introduce MODULÖR114 - Single Unit Eurorack System

Tomorrow more specs and a page on our website...

See ya in Berlin!

(Oh, yes... there will be a ribbon controller in that blank space."

This will be available as a stand alone desktop unit with patch cables and universal DC power supply.

Update: details are in:

"An all in one sound factory, our MODULÖR114 eurorack analog modular synthesizer will be presented for the first time at this year's Superbooth16 in Berlin.
A great entry ticket to the modular world for someone, a trove of sounds for others, the MODULÖR114 encloses the most sought-after analog textures and the modern additions that renders this product unique.
Some key points:

-Analog Heart-
The MODULÖR114 shows its lineage with its raw, organic and sometimes uneducated analog sonic character. The heart of the modular synthesizer is a full set of analog blocks that allows the musician to be inspired and experiment with a real, no compromise machine. More than twenty freely patchable analog modules lets you deep dive into the world of synthesis with the added bonus of the many other characteristics of the MODULÖR114.

-Workflow Integration-
A modern all-in-one modular machine like the MODULÖR114, just gives no compromises on the side of connectivity. Today we implemented many advanced features that will benefit any kind of user from their presence. The integral USB MIDI to CV interface sports many features that are yet to be found on the majority of eurorack modules. Apart from the classic pitch and gate signals we can derive a 16th clock, the modwheel amount to CV and, finally, Parameter Change control over two CV, an attenuator and a slew controller. The possibilities are wide.
A great addition is the USB HOST capability of the MODULÖR114: By selecting the HOST interface you can plug in a usb midi keyboard or control surface and have your complete synth working without a support pc!
Last but not least, MODULÖR114 is made to be a slim, portable unit and it can be powered also by the USB device port!

-Maximum Playability-
The MODULÖR114 includes a couple of hard-to-find functions in many competitor's machines: a ribbon controller and an internal quantizer. Those two functions, together or not, make for a great deal of playability in a modular synth environment and sets a new standard in self-contained machines.

-Digital Spark-
Orthodox things give us the hitch. We are all for contamination, infection and cross breeding, so we put a good deal of digital stuff into our analog machine: A complete fx unit based on a 24bit DSP is available to either enrich the sound or properly shape it with delays, chorus and reverbs, all controllable with CVs and taptempo inputs. On the rightmost part of the synth you can find a plethora of simple yet effective digital blocks, like logic gates, clock dividers and trigger buttons. From rhythmic duties to digital ringmods....

-the SYNTH! button-
We designed the MODULÖR114 as a perfect entry door to the eurorack modular world by putting together a great assortment of modules with the added functionalities of digital fx and advanced connectivity.

As the cherry on the cake we implemented a hidden monosynth that you can recall at the touch of a button! This innovative capability matches perfectly with one of the potential uses of the MODULÖR114 synth, the lead and bass monosynth. All the red labeled jacks will be connected together in the classic monophonic synthesizer signal flow. Without using patchcords you can start playing just by plugging a usb keyboard in!"

WMD Aperture variable width bandpass filter - Program Material

Published on Mar 29, 2016 William Mathewson

"This is a quick demo of how the Aperture filter handles program material, AKA an entire mix ran through it. For this patch the Aperture is at the end of the signal chain, filtering the drums, bass, and auxiliary lines all together. Resonance and feedback are mostly turned all the way down to demonstrate how the Aperture can cleanly filter an entire mix. Input level is also below 12 o' clock meaning the Aperture itself isn't adding any gain, adding to the clarity of the signal."

Madrona Labs Introduces Virta Sound Controlled Synthesis and Effects

We have a new synth app from Madrona Labs, the maker of the Buchla inspired Aalto. This one uses audio to synthesize new sounds. The synthesis and effect can be subtle or extreme as you can hear in the demos above.

Via the Madrona Labs website:

"Virta is a patchable toolbox for turning your voice or other instrument into wild new synth sounds."

And from the manual:

"Synthesizers and effects. In this crazy mixed-up world, what could be better? On and on, we tweak and twist, searching for something. Smiles creeping across our faces all the while. The roiling sea of knobs and buttons and lights are magnetic. We seek, pure of heart, to merge with the world of sound.

Alas, we sometimes find ourselves stopped short.

It can be a tall order to get the level of expression and immediacy that you crave with traditional synthesizers and processors. is goes double if you’ve got to work quickly, but want to maintain a satisfying amount of complexity and variance in your sound. Perhaps, in the heat of a creative moment, you have wished to simply dive into a synth or effect and command it by thought. There is no shame in that.

This, to a large degree, is why we’ve created Virta - a modular synthesizer and effects processor that responds directly to you.

When you route your voice (or any kind of audio) into Virta, the sound analysis engine precisely extracts information about its pitch, timbre, and dynamics over time. These new signals can control nearly any parameter in Virta, just the same as you can with MIDI or OSC.

Tis makes for an instrument that can easily follow your every twist and turn. Living the dream, really. Then again, Virta is modular, so audio-controlled synthesis is just one road you can travel. You can also make stuff like:

• Expressive vocal processing chains
• 4-voice MIDI-controlled pitch shi ers
• MIDI/OSC-controlled synths (with or without audio control)
• Drones for days
• First-ever faithful emulation of the mating call of the Space Pony

A Quick Overview
Virta’s interface has four main sections, from top to bottom:
• The header section, where you’ll nd the patch menu, along with the version and registration status of your copy of Virta.
• The signals and shapes section, where AUDIO and MIDI/OSC (KEY) signals ow into Virta, and where the oscillators (OSC1 and OSC2) and modulators (LFO, and ENVELOPE) reside.
• The patcher section, where connections between modules are made and unmade.
• The processing and output section, where the sounds you make are massaged and processed to perfection by the FORMANT, GATE, DE- LAY, and OUTPUT modules"
