Logan String Melody + Juno 6 + CS-10

Published on Oct 7, 2016 Michal Patulski

"The Logan is almost fully restored. Only two more caps need to be replaced (the sound would still suddenly disappear, like in this video around 1:10 mark). The hum is now almost completely gone/inaudible and the instrument sounds clear, smooth and simply glorious. I put the new octave divider, many new caps to replace the puffed or corroded ones and the new high wattage resistors on the oscillator board."

"This unit was bought from a lovely guy who purchased it brand new in 1982. He was the only owner. This is an early serial number model (303’s have 2 zeros at the end of their serial numbers) and obviously a rare collector’s item as well as an amazing and highly functional synth.

Original owner included the service notes (as pictured) in the sale. As you can see, it was serviced by Robin Whittle who is a famous synth tech and the guy responsible for the legendary Devilfish 303 mod (to be clear, this unit is not modded and was only serviced by Robin). The service cost $377 and will ensure years of problem free use of this 303.

The battery compartment is free of corrosion and everything works on this unit, as it should..."

"For sale is a rare Roland TB303. It's in near mint shape and fully functional. Includes carry case bag (also in excellent shape) and original boss power supply. All the knobs turn smoothly, scratch free and buttons are all triggering properly. Super hard to find a 303 that performs are perfectly as this one. You won't have any issues with buttons double triggering or requiring firm presses, programming on this is a breeze. This one has been very lightly used over the years and it shows."

DreamsOfWires - AJH Mini Mod 'Moog days revisited'

Published on Oct 7, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"A re-recording of a video I originally made using the Moog Slim Phatty a couple of years ago. I thought it'd be fun to try it with some authentic Minimoog sounds using 3 oscillators. In the original recording I used a very dense Eventide Space patch, which was almost like an instrument in itself (albeit a rather nice one), and so it added a lot to the sound that wasn't really there to begin with. Unfortunately, I sold that some time ago, so this time I'm using Kymatica's AUFX:DUB and Virsyn's Audio Reverb within AUM on an iPad - In this version the effects are a little more modest so that you can hear the true sound of the synth better. I first recorded the track dry into a separate channel, then used the fileplayer to send the recording through the effects so that I could experiment with different settings and levels, then record a mix once I was happy with it (which you can see in the top-left of the video).
The video is far from what I wanted it to be, but my PC has almost completely died over the last couple weeks, so editing was near impossible. I'll have to get a new CPU and motherboard soon I guess.
The original track is on my album here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com/..."

Hurricane Matthew Jam

Published on Oct 7, 2016 Nick Jackson

"I am holed up in my residence in the Florida Keys with shutters over the windows, waiting for Matthew to pass. The weather here is just a little gusty at best, but other places have not been as lucky.

Anyway, it seemed like a good day to jam on some synth. This is a live performance on the Korg Minilogue plugged through a Mutable Instruments Ripples filter and then through my guitar pedalboard with a few goodies engaged. Sorry for the awkward frame, but my tripod broke and this is the only way I can get it to sit now lol.

Thank you very much for listening."

Suzanne Ciani Lecture (Montréal 2016) | Red Bull Music Academy

Uploaded on Oct 4, 2016 Red Bull Music Academy

"A true synthesizer pioneer, Suzanne Ciani’s love of electronic music began in 1968 during a field trip to MIT, but it was her decade-long adventure mastering the Buchla 200 that would define her career. She worked in commercials and in the late 80’s and 90’s redefined herself again as a five-time Grammy-nominated new age artist. In her 2016 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, she talked about her history as well as her recent collaborative effort with fellow Buchla player Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.

The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year."

Playlist:
1. Wavetable Oscillator Patch (Knobcon demo) - "In this video we loaded the "Wavetable Oscillator" Patch, one of the patches which we've shown at Knobcon. The LFO (green cubes) are modulating the number of indexes of the wavetable oscillator as well as its frequency. In the depth editor of the software we also specified that the LFOs can modulate each other, as we show in this video."

2. Step Sequencer Patch - Knobcon Demo - "In this video we loaded the "step sequencer" patch (knobcon demo) which is available on our website. It's a simple patch where we use the distance to change the notes of the step sequencer. The signal of the step sequencer is modulating the amplitude and frequency of the LFO."

3. FM Synthesis Patch (Knobcon demo) - "FM synthesis patch using 1 output, 2 oscillators, and 1 envelope generator"

4. Wind Blowing Patch (Knobcon demo) - "In this video we loaded the 'wind blowing' patch which is available on our website. We have 4 modules: output, filter, noise generator and DC generator. In the video we explain how we're patching the different modules as well as how we can use REMOTE to change the cutoff of the filter."

5. Visualization features in SYNTHOR - "In this video, we give an overview of the most important visualization features in SYNTHOR."

6. How to name a patch in SYNTHOR - "In this video, we explain how you can rename and save your patch in SYNTHOR using REMOTE."

7. How to connect REMOTE and AudioCubes - "While SYNTHOR is running on the computer we connect REMOTE through USB. The REMOTE acts as a base station for the wireless AudioCubes. Each time a cube is switched on it automatically joins the wireless network and a synth module is assigned to it."

8. Easily switch presets in SYNTHOR using REMOTE - "Easily switch presets in SYNTHOR with a tap of a button on REMOTE. Synth modules are automatically assigned to each AudioCube when switching or loading presets."

9. Wind Blowing patch using AudioCubes, SYNTHOR and REMOTE - "In this video we loaded the 'wind blowing' patch which is available on our website. It's a simple patch where we use the distance between LFO and envelope (ADSR) to change the modulation depth. We use REMOTE to change parameters of the ADSR envelope."

10. Wireless Patching using SYNTHOR and AudioCubes - "Basic video that explains how synth modules can be patched using AudioCubes."

11. Patch and change modulation depth simulaneously - "In this video we show how you can patch synth modules and at the same time change the modulation depth by changing distance."

"This synthesizer uses the same multi-oscillator synthesis system (MOSS) tone generator found in the Korg Prophecy which is the reason it is touted as a polyphonic Prophecy. It implements 13 synthesis types, all derived from the original OASYS synthesizer."

Note the original OASYS was never released as a stand alone synth. The Z1, released in 1997, used the technology from it. The OASYS PCI card for the PC (see wikipedia on it here), was released in 1999.

I actually own a Z1 and a Prophecy, and always thought the sound of the Z1 was a bit "dampened" for lack of a better word. It was as if you couldn't quite get the filter to open up all the way - it lacked that extra level of clarity and oomph. I once spoke to someone involved with the development of the Z1, and was told that the DSP chips were underpowered for the engine, and they ran out of time needed to optimize the software to compensate for that. My memory is a little fuzzy though; this was a long time ago. Regarding the Z1 being a poly Prophecy, that is correct only to an extent. They use the same source engine, but the parameters on the two actually differ. One of my favorite patches on the Prophecy is "Prophetic Step". I was curious how it would sound polyphonic, so one day I decided to try an mirror the parameters on the Z1. I discovered that the were not the same, and never managed to program the patch on the Z1. I hate to say it but the Prophecy in general, also slightly sounded better to my ears. The Z1 is still a great synth and offers parameters and physical models not available on other synths, aside from the mono Prophecy of course.

The OASYS synth we all know now followed much later in 2005. Wikipedia has an article on it here. As always use the info on Wikipedia as general information and not fact. They still have the Buchla dates wrong. You can find the corrected dates here.

Vermona's Long Awaited Analog Synth ’14 Set to Ship Next Month

First teased Christmas Eve, 2014, the Vermona '14 is getting ready to ship.

via Vermona:

"Finally, we started producing the first ’14 Analogsynthesizers. And it’s about time - after all, we plan to deliver the first units next month.

It’s awesome seeing how the individual parts merge into something beautiful that we worked so hard on. But looking beautiful is not the point. In the end, each instrument has to fulfill our high tonal standards. Thus each synthesizer will be carefully adjusted and checked and has to pass our obligatory endurance test. A thing well done needs time.

via Arturia

"Grenoble, France, 7 October 2016

Arturia are excited to announce the arrival of DrumBrute - a 100% analog drum machine & sequencer designed with performance and in-depth sound editing at its heart.

The newest member of Arturia’s Brute family, DrumBrute is a powerful beat-making instrument that carries the savage DNA of the MicroBrute, MiniBrute, and MatrixBrute.

Key features of the Arturia DrumBrute include:

* Analog powerhouse: DrumBrute contains 17 fully analog drum & percussion instruments, including two kicks, snare, clap, open & closed hats, high & low toms and conga, maracas, rimshot, clave, tambourine, zap, cymbal, and even a reverse cymbal.

* Exciting synth features: the main output contains a highly regarded two-mode Steiner-Parker filter, allowing you to add dynamic frequency sweeps and satisfying bass drops. Not only that, but every drum sound has multiple parameters that can be tweaked to achieve your perfect kit.

* Easy to use, quick to learn: each one of DrumBrute’s 64 sequences can contain up to 64 steps, and can be chained together in a song mode. Despite this massive performance power, punching in your perfect beat is simple and fast. Fans of vintage drum machines will feel right at home with the familiar layout.

* No menus: every feature has its own dedicated button, knob, or pad, so you’ll spend less time navigating endless sub-menus and more time making music.

* In-depth editing: get in the groove with the natural Swing feature, inspire yourself by dialling in some Randomness, mix up your rhythm with Step Repeat, Roller and Looper functions, accent particular drum hits to add some punch to your beat… DrumBrute has a wealth of advanced features that will satisfy even the most discerning musicians and producers.

* Plays well with others: DrumBrute has extensive connectivity and sync options, including MIDI, Clock, 1PPS, 2PPQ, DIN24, and DIN48. This means that DrumBrute will work seamlessly with all of your other modular, synth, and sequencing gear.

* Amazing in the studio: DrumBrute boasts dedicated audio outputs for each instrument channel giving almost limitless options for external processing and multitrack recording; 3.5mm and ¼” headphone outputs so you’ll never have to hunt out an adapter again; and it can act as a fully-fledged MIDI interface to control your DAW. DrumBrute is an essential tool for the modern producer.

* Reliable on stage: with rugged housing, chunky pads, and wiggle-free knobs, DrumBrute can be relied upon to perform show after show. Always striving to improve with every new release, Arturia have created a strong, enduring instrument that’s ready for life on the road.

* Punches above its weight: DrumBrute stands toe-to-toe with the leading drum synths on the market, but at a fraction of the price. No other all-analog drum machine features such inspiring and dynamic features while retaining a sense of intuitive, tactile fun.

DrumBrute is priced at 449€ / $499.

DrumBrute will shortly be shipping, and will be arriving at your local music store in November. DrumBrute is available to order now from the official Arturia web store, and from retailers worldwide.

For more information on features, specifications and dimensions, visit the DrumBrute page on www.arturia.com/products/drumbrute"
