Waldorf Demos with Saga's Jim Gilmour at the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1992

Saga - Jim Gilmour Demo - Musikmesse Frankfurt 1993 1992 Published on May 12, 2013 MadSevenFilms

"Jim Gilmour ( Saga keyboardist) in a demo at the Waldorf stand during the musikmesse in Germany.
Humble Stance, Wind Him up, Don't be late, Careful where you step, On the loose, etc ...."

Update: according the swissdoc, these videos are actually from 1992. That would make the appearance of the prototype Wave in 1992, not 1993. This post has been updated to reflect that. Note swissdoc's write-ups are from 1993 as you can see in the datestamps for the links, and I believe the production model Wave was indeed released in 1993.

Here's a blast from the past featuring a bit of Waldorf history in via swissdoc. This may very well be the only Waldorf footage from the event. Check out the non-working prototype of the Waldorf Wave in the background. 1992 was the year it made its first appearance to be released in 1993. Note the Microwave rack was released earlier in 1989. Further below you will find some notes on Musikmesse 1993 (the following year after these videos) from swissdoc, followed by a transcription of the Wave flyer. This is a fascinating look back on synth history. But first, one more video from the 1992 Musikmesse.

Update2 via swissdoc: "In addition, for those who can read and understand German, there is a big series of three articles available for download (email has to be provided) from the German Keyboards magazine. Inside Wave. Amazing level of detail plus in part three an interview with developers and users plus additional interviews with the people behind the Wave.

Saga - Jim Gilmour Scratching the surface - Musikmesse Frankfurt 1993 1992

Published on May 13, 2013 MadSevenFilms

"Jim Gilmour ( Saga keyboardist) in a demo at the Waldorf stand during the musikmesse in Germany.

The following is a Musikmesse 1993 recap via swissdoc aka George Mueller, who attended, from way back in 1993 (you'll find a transcript of the Waldorf Wave flyer text further below). P.S. for a quick look at the gear released at the 1993 Musikmesse see here and here, both from swissdoc.

"Before I go into this Wave stuff, I'd like to tell you a little about the Frankfurt Musik Messe. Those restless gear junkies, skip the next 24 lines.

The Frankfurt International Music Fair was held for the 14th time and was attended by a record number of exhibitors: 1194 from 40 contries. So it's the leading event for the music business.

The Messe Frankfurt has 10 halls of different sizes, three of them are used by the Musik Messe. Hall 9.0 is the most interesting, it's for electronic instruments, 9.1 is for guitars and amps, 9.2 is for stage light, sound and mixers. These halls are middle in size, rows range from A to F, with booth numbers up to 90 each. Hall 8 is for acoustic instruments and publishers; it's funny, all that noise from test-playing violins, flutes and so on. This is the biggest hall, rows from A to P. The monster booth of Yamaha is in the back of this hall with all their synths, FXs and personal keyboards. So it's a long walk to Yamaha. It's a bit risky in this hall, if you enter one booth, browse thru the pages of some book, after talking to the salesman you probably lost your orientation. Hall 10.1 is reserved for grand pianos and uprights. No elctricity allowed there.

It's funny, when you change from 9.0 to 9.1, all those long haired heavy metal guys. One amp or guitar company has a Hard Rock Cafe at their booth, evertime overcrowded with guys drinking cocktails or beer.

So, here we are, the promised report on the TSI shows WAVE MUSIC DEMO and INSIDE THE WAVE.

Hologram Electronics Infinite Jets

"Building on its literary namesake, Infinite Jets is an unconventional pedal that follows a player's dynamics and subsequently samples notes and chords before conforming them to entirely new sounds. In addition to two separate channels with infinite sustain, Infinite Jets features four sampling effects: Blur, Synth, Glitch, and Swell. Using these effects, users can transpose Jests into Jets through the generation of sustained ambient compositions with chords that seamlessly blend into one another, granular passages, beautiful fuzz and swells, delays, vibrato, and much more.

"Bit Beat Bot is a Expressive, Portable and Inexpensive sound engine.

It uses one line code formula to generate music/sounds that encompass: drone, noise, ever changing melodic patterns, rhythms, sweeps, video game scenarios etc.. All with the distinctive digital distortion sound. Game-boy like.

It has a power inlet, that can be powered via mini-usb cables (computer or phone charger).

And has 5 pots to control the sound generation:

-parameter 2 of the formula (if included in the formula)
-parameter 3 of the formula (if included in the formula)

It is open software so you can put your favourites code formulas or experiment and customize your Bit Beat Bo with new code.

"This rare working Polymoog was a recent purchase and it's by far the cleanest one you've likely to find. Comes with Poly pedal 285a and the (6-pc support legs). Also includes a binder with printed copies of Owners Manual and schematics sheets. I've been advised to have it "gone over" thoroughly by a technician. But I'm not investing nearly $1k on an item I'm not keeping."

This is a very rare Moog synth that includes the hard to find poly pedal. Unit powers up and all voices, buttons, pitch ribbon and slider controls function. Only defects on this unit is some a slider pots are scratchy sounding on the voices when moved. That should fixable with some contact cleaner sprayed on them though. 3 of the piano keys tend to trigger a voice and will not stop playing that note on certain voice settings. All of the other keys trigger properly."

Delia Derbyshire Honored with Posthumous PhD

via theguardian

"The under-appreciated electronic music pioneer behind the Doctor Who theme is to be honoured posthumously with a doctorate from her hometown university as the programme gears up for the debut of its first female lead.

Largely ignored in life and barred from working in studios because she was a woman, Delia Derbyshire, will be awarded an honorary PhD from Coventry University on Monday."

---

This one was sent in via MATRIXSYNTH Reader Gareth.

An interesting side note is that I once almost picked up Delia Derbyshire's EMS VCS3/Putney. Peter Kember, aka Sonic Boom of Spectrum and Spacemen 3 fame, was selling it along with a Synton Syrinx years ago, before I started this format of MATRIXSYNTH. I seem to remember he wanted around $7k or so for it at the time, but I might wrong. I didn't have the funds so I passed. Also, a little unknown bit of synth history is that EMS sent the BBC an EMS SYNTHI 100 during the time Delia Derbyshire was there, and she actually did not take to it. It is my understanding that she preferred to work with tape. Curious what she might have thought of a Buchla, as the focus of Buchla was to compliment electronic music composition on tape.

Fully Restored Lyricon Wind Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"'The Lyricon is the first electronic instrument to combine a synthesizer with a wind instrument that plays with the same feel and sensitivity as an acoustical woodwind. The Lyricon responds instantly to changes in reed and wind action, giving the player extensive control over loudness, pitch, attack, timbre, decay and other expressive elements of phrasing over a full six-octave range. With the Lyricon, a player's own expression is as important as the synthesizer settings in controlling sound output. And using both, the Lyricon player can produce sounds unobtainable on other synthesizers -- from the imitative tones of conventional woodwinds, brasses and strings, to any number of electronic effects.' -from the original brochure.

This instrument is a fully restored Computone Lyricon Wind Synthesizer from the inventor Bill Bernardi's personal collection. It is in 100% playing condition. The instrument body is in beautiful condition, with only a few tiny flaws in the plating (see pictures). The console panel shows no wear, with the protective clear plastic on the knob skirts still intact. There is a small tear in the tolex on the top upper edge of the console cover (see pictures.) The handle has been replaced. Included with the instrument is the original owner's manual, power cord, advertising flyer, reed, mouthpiece and mouthpiece cover.

"SHERMAN FILTERBANK 2 is meant to be a more or less drastically spicing up boring or stiff sounding material with loads of distorsion before before its sophisticated filter section. Here I was trying to tame the beast a bit wehn I was feeding the digital sounds of KORG VOLCA FM in the unit. But you must not be afraid: It is still far away from being HiFi!!
Unlike other competitors SF 2 is also very capable in stereo-izing mono sound sources."

Here the duo walked us through the vintage synths that have shaped their sound, from the Juno-106 to the Elka Synthex. They also told us how Steely Dan inspired their studio location, gave us some insider tips on starting a synth collection and even recorded a FACT jingle. Watch it above."

Arcology
October 31, 2017
Arcosanti, AZ

I had the fortune of visiting Arcosanti for a few days and meeting some wonderful souls while learning about architect Paolo Soleri's vision of the city as an organism for the transformation of the individual and evolution of the species. It's an inspiring place, and while there, I took the opportunity to create a mandala piece (https://youtu.be/rFeHbZPXUd4) and this modular piece shot on top of The Vaults at sunset.

Learn more about Arcosanti → http://arcosanti.org

✶ PATCH NOTES ✶

Live performance multitracked on Zoom F8 and mixed in Logic with compression, eq, and effects.

This patch is my current performance patch, sans effects. After completing the mandala piece I had less than an hour before sunset and the light was already fading. So I packed up, grabbed my synth and camera gear and headed to the highest point at Arcosanti—the roof of The Vaults. To save time I decided to go Eurorack-only, no external effects. Compositionally, I had zero prep. I just turned the system on, quickly tuned, and went for it.

Voices:

1. STOs → Opto → Belgrad → Rainmaker → F8 Ch 1-2
2. Rings → T-Wrex → Sisters → Clouds → Morphagene → F8 Ch 3-4"

Korg Volca FM Ambient Jam with Poly app & MS-70CDR

Published on Nov 20, 2017 Slenterende Beer

"I got inspired by other people using the Poly iOS app in their improvisations, so I decided to try it myself.

The Poly app generates notes in a defined range, resulting in polyrhythmic patterns. These notes are sent via MIDI to the Volca FM, which itself plays a loop of a few notes. I decided to with the Xylophone FM patch, without extra edits, just knob tweaking. The FM is connected to the Zoom MS-70CDR, which adds the delay and reverb. The output of the Zoom is sent to the Behringer UCA202 USB sound card, which is in turn connected to the iPhone 7 that is used for recording the video and audio."

"PC12 as successor of the PC44 is a universal controller for all kinds of Midi controllable hard- and software.

You can combine two or more NEW MODULE devices to create a large system. The connections are on the right side to allow a back to back placing of two or more devices. Connect two NEW MODULES by a special extension port.

Furthermore there are 4 Midi-ports and one USB-port with various routing possibilities.

It is packed in a alu case with the same dimensions like the famous ELEKTRON devices so it’s a great extension for these devices. But you can use the pot controller also with your DAW like a classical 12-track-mixer.

The device has 72 standard pots and 12 buttons in a 12-track-layout, Various kinds of midi commands like control change, note on/off, pitchbend, aftertouch and program change are possible. You can program every Midi command for every separate control on the device very fast and easily.

Of course you can assign the pots and keys to any of these commands by learning incoming Midi commands, which is the same procedure you know from your software / DAW. The pots work with standard resolution of 7 bit to have full compatibility to any software and hardware instrument, effect and DAW. Use the internal 30 setups to save your individual settings. Backup and restore of all settings by sysex dumps is possible too.

The factory settings are perfect to control music and video software products out of the box if they are freely assignable. So any additional device programming isn’t necessary for many applications.

Some special setups are preconfigured for use with ELEKTRON RYTM and ABLETON LIVE.

Check out this amazing power box and you will get a reliable mate..."
