Has Elektron Lost Its Way? Sidstation, Mono & Machinedrum (Part1)

Published on Jan 30, 2019 Synth & Sundry

"Elektron started with the Sidstation in 1998 built around the sound chip from the Commodore 64. It wouldn’t look out of place on a spy’s desk, somewhere in Cold War Sweden.

3 years later, they upped the ante with the Machinedrum, a digital drum machine with four percussive sound engines, a super-involved sequencer and multiple outs.

The Monomachine came in 2003 and applied the same form factor and sequencer magic but, this time, around five synth engines.

Elektron uploaded their first video to YouTube in 2009. It starred Hector (played by Kola Krauze) as a stern instructor.

The setting was a positively dystopian anechoic chamber. In my opinion, Elektron, at this point, saw itself not as a maker of consumer-friendly products but rather, as designers of unique machines.
They appealed to those crazy enough to try."

ContinuuMini first improv

"First recording of the Haken ContinuuMini. I had it for maybe 20 minutes, and while I feel I can improve hitting the notes exactly with a little practice the thing just feels totally natural. Arpeggio is the IK Multimedia Uno, lead line is the ContinuuMini only with no external effects."

Nonlinear Labs C15 Synthesizer At NAMM 2019

Published on Jan 30, 2019 Synthtopia

"At the 2019 NAMM Show, Nonlinear Labs made the NAMM debut of their C15 synthesizer.

The C15 is unusual in that it's a keyboard that's designed to be closer to traditional instruments than traditional synthesizers. As a result, it doesn't have internal sequencing, ARP, LFO's or even MIDI - it's designed for you to play it expressively, not machines.

In the first section of the video, founder Stephan Schmitt gives an introduction to the philosophy behind the C15. Starting around 8:30, Schmitt demonstrates the C15 and explains how the keyboard's expressive capabilities dynamically control its synthesis engine."

Prophet X Receives 2019 TEC Award -- Best New Musical Instrument

First mentioned here, the official press release follows.

Congrats to Sequential! :)

"Prophet X Receives 2019 TEC Award for Best New Musical Instrument

San Francisco, CA—Jan 30, 2019—The NAMM Foundation has awarded the Sequential Prophet X its prestigious Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Award for “Best New Musical Instrument.” The Award was presented at the Foundation’s annual awards ceremony at the National Association of Music Merchants convention in Anaheim, California. The award marks the third TEC award for Sequential and the second TEC award for 8Dio’s Troels Folmann, sample content developer for the instrument.

The TEC Awards are the “Oscars” of the pro audio and sound recording industry and recognize the most outstanding products and technical achievements in the world of music making, live performance, video games, television, and film. Winners represent superior accomplishments in their respective fields and categories.

In addition to the TEC award, the Prophet X has garnered wide critical acclaim from both the music industry press and users alike for its sonic versatility and depth. Its powerful, yet easy to use combination of synthesis-plus-samples technology powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

It boasts an internal library of 150 GB of sample content from Academy-award winning sample developers 8Dio, as well as the ability to import up to 50 GB of additional user samples and third-party add-on content. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and a full complement of synthesis functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, and a deep modulation matrix. A dual-effects engine, 64-step polyphonic step sequencer, and arpeggiator add additional performance features.

Sequential founder Dave Smith commented: “We’re proud that the Prophet X has been recognized by both the NAMM Foundation and by the public for what it is — a great-sounding, easy to use creative tool that puts powerful technology in the hands of musicians. That’s always been our philosophy and that’s what we continue to do.” 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann added: “Receiving a TEC award is always a gratifying experience, but we’re particularly pleased to receive it for our work on the Prophet X because the synth gives musicians a very immediate, expressive, and tactile way to use our deep-sampled instruments.”

The Prophet X ($3,999 US MAP) and Prophet XL ($4,399 US MAP) are available from Sequential’s worldwide network of dealers."

Corsynth C105 MKII - Creating random gates

Published on Jan 30, 2019 Corsynth

"How to create random gates using the Corsynth C105 MKII"

via Corsynth

"The C105 VC Noise / Lo-Fi Machine MKII is a voltage controlled analog sample rate reducer and a VC Nosie generator. This new MKII version expands the modules possibilities with new features that allows this module to be used in other ways not possible with the previous version. Now the C105 MKII can be used like a traditional sample and hold , a voltage controlled clock generator , a random gate / trigger generator or a 12 db VC High pass filter and even as a square wave VCO.

The C105 new characteristics are :

The internal clock has a new LOW mode that allows to use it as a traditional sample and hold.
The module now accepts external clock signals, so it can be synced to other modules.
New clock output. Now the C105 can be used as a master clock.
The passive first order HPF has been replaced for a voltage controlled second order HPF.
The C105 is based on a Sample and Hold with an internal clock that goes from 0,2Hz up to 44KHz and it can be voltage controlled. This wide frequency range and two FM inputs ( one with a reversible attenuator ) allow to create subtle or harsh digital and aliassing effects. The internal noise generator in combination with the S&H make a perfect way to create pitched noises, random voltages, sound FXs etc. In addition, there is also a 12db VC controlled high pass filter with an independent output.

The C105 can be used in many different ways:

Sample rate reducer
Noise generator
Voltage controlled High pass filter
Random voltage generator
Random gate generator
Sample and Hold
VC Clock
Square wave oscillator
………

Price : 215 € + VAT

C105 VC Noise / Lo-Fi MKII

The Lo-Fi input is normalized to the internal noise generator.

The C105 Voltage Controlled Noise / Lo-Fi Machine MKII is built using high quality electronic components, Switchcraft jacks, NKK switches, Cosmo knobs (the same used in the Moog Modulars) , black anodized aluminium front panel …."
