Kurzweil Announces New PC4 V.A.S.T. Synthesizer with 6-Op FM Synth Engine & 4G of Sample Memory

Kurzweil has a new full blown synth in the works. It addition to the classic V.A.S.T. engine that made Kurzweil synths both powerful and popular, the PC4 will introduce a new 6-Op FM engine which will support DX7 patches, unless they are referring to other 80s SysEx files. The 4G of sample memory is split between 2G of on board content and 2G available for users.

"The Spherical Wavetable Navigator (SWN) is a six-channel synthesizer that makes it easy to create slowly morphing drones, polyphonic melodies, evolving sequences, and rich textures. The SWN features six wavetable oscillators with independent pitch, level, and waveform controls. Six LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) can be used as modulation sources and/or envelopes, making it easy to add dynamic motion to your patch. Each channel is a full voice and can be “played” using the top row of buttons, the internal LFOs, or note-change detection on the 1V/oct jacks. They also gave us a tour of their Minimoog prototypes, and some of the design decisions that not only determined the shape of one of the most iconic synths of all time - but many of standard features of synths that have followed."

WAV2Evolver Waveform Generator for the DSI Evolver Line

I was chatting with Brian Comnes about waveform editors for the DSI Evolver. There are the SoundTower and Vyzor editors that give you access to the full parameters of the Evolvers, but if you just want to create and upload waveforms, Brian let me know about WAV2Evolver, a free online editor that does just that. Thank you Brian!

See if you can make out my lame attempt at a waveform to the left. Note you can have only one point along the horizontal plane. I actually never thought about that before.

Update: the output is a .wav file so this could be useful for other synths and applications.

"WAV2Evolver is an online waveform conversion application for users of the Dave Smith Instruments Evolver family of synthesizers.

It allows you to upload WAV files containing single-cycle waveforms, and then download them as system exclusive files that the Evolver can understand. You may also download waveforms as RAW PCM files or new WAV files. The RAW and WAV files downloaded from this application use Evolver-friendly 128-sample, 16-bit PCM.

WAV2Evolver is also a waveform sharing application. You may view and download waveforms that others have generated, and you may share waveforms that you have generated. I encourage you to share your waveforms, although this is completely optional.

I don't have to tell you how rare these are and the prices of them are going up and up and up, so they are a good investment (one sold on RL music for over 9K very recently). I made this awesome Korg DDD-1 Sample Pack. I sampled every instrument 64 times - each variation is pitched inside the machine, so you get all hissy and noisy samples in original lo-fi aesthetic. 1152 samples total.

I created Ableton 10 Drumrack with all the macros, colors and stuff. But, of course you can use it as standard .wav library.
