"Just got my Plumbutter in today. Unfortunately I leave for 10 days of work in the morning but here's a little jam that came out of my first few minutes with it, straight into an OTO BAM!

I didn't record the actual recording of the patch as I was too in the zone but I figured the Plumbutter is gorgeous enough to look at for 6 or so minutes :D"

Synthetic Soundlabs Pays a Rare Visit to Bell Lab's VODER Speech Synthesizer From 1939

Update: via Doug: "The console I’m playing is a recreation that was commissioned to me by current Bell Labs President Marcus Weldon. I’m seen here playing it prior to a BL event. Photo by Larry Fast. Also in attendance was Wally DeBacker (Gotye). you can see and hear me play it live on the PBS series 'Breakthrough: History of the Smart Phone' episode [might not be available in your area though]. Narrated by Patrick Stewart, and hosted by former editor of Popular Mechanics, Jim Meigs."

via Synthetic Sound Labs, click through for additional pics.

"For the first time in nearly 80 years, the VODER has been found – well at least some of it. Unfortunately, none of the operator consoles are known to have survived the various archive moves over the years.

On December 15, 2015, SSL’s President Doug Slocum was treated to unprecedented access to the AT&T Archives & History Center in Warren New Jersey to view and record the uncovering of two of the original equipment racks used to train VODER operators in preparation for the Bell System’s 1939 Worlds Fair exhibit."

Check out this post for an old black and white video demo of the VODER when working. You can find a handful of additional posts mentioning the VODER here.

via this auction

"ARP 2601 V1 with a custom 'keytar' setup, keytar cable, and travel lid. If you want to do Edgar Winter solos, this is for you.

Everything is working perfectly on this synth and it is in tune. The sliders travel smoothly and there isn't any static or odd behavior associated with them. The reverb tank sounds great. It has the highly sought after 4012 filter module. The keytar modifications were professionally done and can be easily switched out if you want to employ MIDI & CV control instead. There is a custom XLR socket on the right side of this synth. The keyboard has strap buttons installed and connects to a 40 foot stage cable."

I used to think Edgar Winter carried the full ARP 2600. He only carried the keyboard on stage of course.

"Christian Henson of Spitfire Audio has released The 900 Foot Piano, the latest offering in his Pianobook project of notable pianos.

The 9000 Foot Piano spotlights an exceptional Yamaha baby grand piano that has been featured on countless soundtracks and records. The Add-On is available for free download at the Pianobook site and is offered in a variety of formats, including a Prophet X/XL compatible version.

Pianobook a collective sample project that aims to bring together a community of like-minded music makers to talk about their stories through the pianos they use, admire, and are inspired by. It is Henson’s belief that every piano has a story and that by sampling the instrument and telling its story, a whole new world of inspiring sounds, textures, and instruments can be created. As Henson puts it, “Pianobook is a place to share stories, create something extraordinary, and learn something new about each other and our ourselves.”

Heard about this one via Robert Ginsburg in the comments of this EML-500 post. Apparently there is a German performance for the song featuring an EML 500. I couldn't find it, but I did find the above which features a Minimoog and Oberheim FVS based on the size, and I believe a Rhodes piano.

Here's another track with the Minimoog panel down, an Arp Solina, and a couple of other synths.

Dreadbox Erebus 3 - "Floating Matter" - 50 Patches

"Several months ago we took the synth for a test and we fell in love with it immediately. So we decided to create the soundset to express our passion to Erebus.

The bank consists of 50 patches:
10 Bass
16 Leads
8 Pads
10 Plucks
6 Sequences

As the synth is fully analog, there’s no way to save timbres.
The only way to share the patches is a «classical» cookbook, a catalog with images of the patches.

Also, you get an audio file, demo for each patch, in order to listen to the way it should sound if the patch is recreated correctly.

Moreover each page of the catalog includes notes that help you to create the patch or give the ideas of how to tweak it after it’s done.

Each patch includes modulation via ModWheel.
This gives an opportunity to control expression of the timbre and morph the sound between different states.

The patches are of different level of complexity.

Some are quite simple, musical and suitable for many purposes.
Some are pretty tricky and will delight the experiments lovers.

The heart of the synth is its patchbay.
For creating different kind of timbres up to 6 patchcords were used.

Make sure you have at least 6 patchcords to recreate these patches."

4ms Spherical Wavetable Navigator - Patch

Published on Dec 17, 2019 Richard Devine

"Pure bliss this morning creating swarming harmonic crystal swells with the Spherical Wavetable Navigator. Running the self-modulation mode on the SWN to modulate the inner timbre/spread parameters and the slow sequencing of the pitches. The SWN was externally clocked using a 4ms QCD, then from there the clock was multiplied out to two Qu-bit Octone modules that played at a 32nd pulse rate-controlling one mutable instruments Braids, and a 2hp plucked VCO. The mix out of the Spherical Wavetable Navigator was sent into a Makenoise Qpass, then into the 4ms DLD and Topographic Delay modules for the reversing cascading delay effects."

ROLAND SYSTEM 1OO - COMPLETE

This one was spotted and sent in via M Me.

Google translated from the listing:

"Sell my complete Roland System 100 in almost excellent condition!

It is hardly possible to find this system in complete condition!
It was Roland's starting signal in the Era Modular Analog Synthesizer and the cornerstone of their legacy!
Synths like the Jupiter series, the 100M and the System 700 would hardly have been possible without it.

If you sit in front of it, you feel like you're in a cockpit and have all the possibilities of analog synthesis in front of you! When people came to my studio they left Minimoog, Jupiter 8 and co behind when they saw the SYSTEM 100! It takes over and looks in every studio as if it were a complete studio (which it is!)

With all the fun you can have with this system, you must not forget what value you have in front of you! Just the thing in times of low interest rate policy!

The two effects RE-201 and RE 301 are not part of the auction. They fit perfectly into the setup and can be looped in through the mixer. If you are interested in them, please feel free to contact us. A package price would also be possible."

The Rare Welsh Minimoog Model E Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

This one was spotted and sent in via M Me. You can find a few in previous posts here. There was a period when Moog went out of business and Bob Moog ran Big Briar. Two individuals grabbed the Moog name, Don Martin (Donimoog) in the US and Alex Winters in the UK / Wales.

Google translated from this German listing:

"For sale is a rare collector's item, a Minimoog Model E.

Only about 3-5 of these were built. The manufacturer was Moog by Alex Winter from Wales. When Bob Moog lost the naming rights to his original company in the USA, Alex Winter from Wales bought it for Europe and built a handful of Minimoogs. The condition is very good, except for a scratch on the panel in the right control panel.

It has the same features as the Minimoogs from the USA, but also has PWM for the oscillators and has MIDI.
The sound is absolutely identical to the other Minimoogs.

The buyer can look forward to a well-kept, very rare device, which has the advantage of being significantly younger than the old Moogs and can be integrated into a modern setup due to the midi connection.

I took over the device from a friend who owns a large collection of synthesizers, who bought the device through the company 'Touched-by-Sound'."

Appears to be same as this one from November with new pics. I love the colored knobs on these.

"This is the most fully featured and best sounding Synthi you will find.

It combines the earliest and best-generation sound (Mk.I) with a huge list of modifications which expand even further the range of sound possibilities as well as make for easy interfacing with the modern studio.

Modifications include CV/gate controls, filter unslew, oscillator sync, matrix buffering + tempcos for pitch stability, trapezoid inversion, and ten-turn input scaling pots for precise control of pitch tracking. More details about the modifications available on request to serious buyers.

Unit was recently serviced (+ additional mods performed) in early 2018 by a well-known tech in Belgium, perhaps the best EMS tech in the world. Absolutely no expense was spared to make this a top of the line instrument."

Moog Model D Improvisation by Shook

Published on Dec 11, 2019 shookmusic

"I am working on a new way to perform live. I like this minimal approach, just one synth maybe some effects, a drum computer and maybe for some songs some backing tracks (because I won't be touring with a band yet).
What do you think?

No midi was used and no overdubs. Just one take.

The Model D re-issue has the benefit of modulating the filter cutoff with velocity for more expressive playing.

In the second part of the improvisation I got a little bit carried away, and it wen't to a more dark / funky direction.

Minimoog Model D + Juno 60 synth jam

Published on Dec 16, 2019 shookmusic

"I love the Moog Model D (reissue) for it's bass and leads.
Today it's joined with the classic Roland Juno 60 with classic chorus enabled. Later in the video the Moog Model D becomes the lead synth and I enabled the EHX Memoryman delay.

Drums were edited in post and some compression and Valhalla Vintage Verb was used. All synth parts were live unedited, no over dubs or midi used.

Thanks all for your lovely comments and support. Will try to keep you posted about my progress in live performing again with these little videos. You support means a lot to me. It is truly appreciated..! Much love, -J"

Polymoog 203A Synthesizer: A Sonic Exploration

Published on Dec 17, 2019 shookmusic

"The Polymoog 203A is such an inspiring instrument. I think it's a very mysterious synthesizer. This video is a personal 'sonic exploration'. I tried to capture how I would use it's sounds to create music.

Chapters
1. Beat 1 0:00
2. Strings 1 2:17
3. Sample And Hold 3:56
4. Beat 2 5:26
5. Strings 2 7:10

Notes:
Everything has been recorded using an Audient ASP880 pre-amp / Audient ID22 Audio interface.
Chapter 1 and 4 has an EHX Frequency Shifter enabled in it's signal chain for slow movement. Drums are (samples) from a Korg Minipops. In post the sound has been processed using Waves SSL Compressors and Valhalla Vintage Verb.

In almost all chapters I only have the VCF (voltage controlled filter) with it's own envelope generator enabled in the Polymoog's master gain controls. I did this because this way I can sculpt it's sound more to my liking. It's envelope generator is however monophonic, so there is 're-triggering' happening each time you play something polyphonic. You hear this 're-triggering' best in chapter 1. You could see this as a limitation, but I think it forces you to play more creatively.

Thanks all for your nice comments and support, it is truly appreciated..!

CVquencer calibrating an analog synthesizer

Published on Dec 17, 2019 3AlanC

"CVquencer is using a MOTU UltraLite Mk4 to control a Dreadbox Erebus with CV/Gate. Two outputs from the UltraLite are connected to the CV and Gate inputs of the Erebus and the audio output from the Erebus is connected to one of the UltraLite's inputs. The Erebus is set to play a basic triangle wave from a single oscillator to give the best result during calibration. CVquencer generates a series of control voltages and measures the frequencies the Erebus produces: it uses this information to create a tuning table that allows it to output accurate control voltages."

Available on the App Store here for $9.99.

"CVquencer is a step sequencer that can control analog synthesizers using CV/Gate via a suitable audio interface, output MIDI to external instruments, control synthesizer apps running on your iPad, or run stand-alone using its internal sample-based synthesizer.

CVquencer has four layers, each consisting of 16 steps. Each step has an eight stage gate sequencer controlling how it will repeat: individual repeats can be set to a rest, a note or tied to the next repeat. Note length, timing, velocity, modulation, playback probability and glide can all be set per step.

Each layer has its own clock divider and playback direction. Combined with the step repeats this allows CVquencer to create patterns that are far more complex than a typical step sequencer.

Notes:
• To use CV/Gate an appropriate DC-coupled audio interface and suitable cables are required.
• CVquencer does not function as an Audio Unit plugin since it requires multi-channel access to an audio interface when generating CV/Gate signals."

SAAYM - A CMS GameBlaster clone with a YM2151 too!

Published on Dec 17, 2019 The 8-Bit Guy

via TexElec (note other cards are available)

"The SAAYM sound card is designed for any vintage PC with a standard 8- or 16-bit ISA slot. It has three separate sound chips on board: 2 Phillips SAA1099 programmable sound generators (PSG) and one Yamaha YM2151 FM synthesizer chip with its accompanying YM3012 stereo DAC. The card mixes all three stereo outputs through a high quality TL072 OPAMP and WIMA film capacitors for the best sound possible. The output is line level and uses a single stereo 1/8” or 3.5mm stereo headphone-style jack for output. Amplified stereo speakers with volume adjustments are required.

This card is a fully functional clone of the original GameBlaster or Creative Music System (CMS) card by Creative Labs. The original card used two SAA1099 ICs to generate sound. This card has the necessary circuitry to allow the CMS driver to load, as well as pass detection by games which probe for and support the CMS.

In addition to support for GameBlaster games in DOS, this card also supports playing back VGM files which support the YM2151. There is a great program for DOS called SBVGM which now supports the SAAYM card! Thanks so much to OPLx for assistance adding support for the SAAYM to SBVGM. UDO Audio - Super 6 workshop @SchneidersLaden

Published on Dec 17, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"George from UDO Audio presented their new synthesizer Super 6 in a workshop at SchneidersLaden. Enjoy the exploration of this fine instrument and the excellent jam session.

The Super 6 is a 12-voice polyphonic, binaural hybrid synthesizer. It is flexible, powerful and refined with a gorgeous analog sound character. Rich and evolving textures can easily be created via the Super-Wavetable core. The results are shapeable using the binaural analog signal path and the flexible modulation system. All in all a very interesting synthesizer for all kinds of electronic music."

In this video we explore the sound architecture, fetures, and functions of Crater. We cover how to use the Sustian feature, why you would want to sequence 1V/oct on a kick drum, and make a ton of sounds with the manual controls as well with CV."
