OB-6: "Parallel-12"

Published on Apr 23, 2020 Kris Lennox

"What a sound from the Obi. Patch took a while. ...This piece will take a little explaining:

The work is written in 24-TET (24 notes per octave), but I'm treating it as two stacked layers of 12-TET (12-TET is the foundation of Western harmony), each layer 1/4 tone apart. Hence 'Parallel-12'.

Parallel-12 harmony is something I've been developing alongside full 24-tone harmony. I'll upload a few pieces in this harmonic system in the near future. Some of the changes in Parallel-12 can be achingly beautiful.

The entire system of Parallel-12 is a completely unexplored landscape. But that's partly because I'm developing it :)

There's so much to explore in the world of harmony. Vast, unexplored continents, I'd say. Sometimes it's good to stay at home; at other times it is great to pack supplies and head off into the wilderness.

In Parallel-12, all chords sound 'musical' - but the changes between them can sound very, very unusual. In fact, the changes of this piece have never been heard before. :)

There are numerous Parallel-12 shifts throughout: the changes at the sudden filter shifts should be obvious (and some will be less so).

This was written in MIDI (well, written in the mind, then inputted in MIDI), which is a small nightmare in Parallel-12 (i.e the MIDI notes don't correspond to the actual pitches, so the process takes a very long time). MIDI sent to the synth, freeing up the hands to play with the filters etc (plus in order to physically play this, I'd need more than 88 keys. And even if I did play it, I'd have no hands left to adjust the filter etc! Catch-22).

Time signature is 36/16 (or you could think 4 groups of 9/16).

Very different. :)

Enjoy
All best
Kris"

Free Ableton Live Instruments - Yamaha CP10 Electronic Piano

Published on Apr 23, 2020 Expanding Sound

"Get the pack here

http://www.expandingsound.com/product...

The Yamaha CP10 is a vintage electric piano with a fairly basic soundset. There are only a few different variations to the tone with slight modulation. But one came my way a few years back, so I figured why not sample it? Thanks to Ableton's Sampler capabilities I was able to take some very plain samples and create some pretty tones. This is a pack that actually makes the keyboard sound better than it did originally, in my opinion. Add a little delay and some reverb and these can come to life a little bit. Hope you find them useful! Check out our other packs as well!"

New FREE Microfreak Patch Pack: "Nostalgia and Reminiscence"

Published on Apr 23, 2020 Oscillator Sink

"Get the patches here: https://www.arturia.com/products/hard...

Today I'm excited to share with you my brand new patch pack for the MicroFreak which is being released for free by the good folks at Arturia.

The pack is called "Nostalgia and Reminiscence" and my idea with this pack was not to try to recreate any classic sounds per se, rather to create patches of how they sound in my head, through rose-tinted glasses and years of sitting on old tapes, cassettes, and VHSs.

The patches in the pack tend towards the fuzzy, wobbly and lo-fi without trying to sound obviously retro. I've also put a big emphasis on taking advantage of the MicroFreak's special playing surface, with almost all of the patches reacting to your playing pressure - so don't be afraid to lean in on these sounds to feel how they shift under your fingertips."

Strymon Volante with synth - Chapter 3: Vermona PERfourMER mkii - A 4 notes weekend

Published on Apr 23, 2020 While We Were Sleeping

0:00 - Intro: Does it sound better with or without the Volante?
0:55 - Jam 1: Loving this patch
8:11- Jam 2: can't stop playing this patch
15:16 Jam 3: Going abstract

This is the 3rd chapter of my Strymon Volante with mostly synth series and like the Microfreak before it, this one will be covered in two consecutive videos.

In this two part I have pared the Volante with my Vermona PERfourMER mkii. The PERfourMER is a four part/oscillators analog synth that is flexible and creative and I have deep love for it.

I have kept the Microfreak for this video as a MIDI controller as I really enjoy playing on it. the Microfreak is controlling the PERfourMER Oscillator 4.

I am also using noodlebox prototype by six4pix for CV control of Oscillators 1 to 3. The noodlebox is currently on indiegogo and will have about a day left until the end of the campaign when this video comes out. In my opinion the noodlebox is an inspiring sequencer and looks super cool. if you want to know more search for "Noodlebox - A Serendipity Sequencer" on indiegogo.com or go to six4pix.net

The backroud to this video is:
I was planning on coming up with a complex patch on the noodlebox but made the mistake of turning the Volante on after entering only 4 notes and I thought it sounded so good that I couldn't stop jamming over it all weekend long.
So the first of this two parter will be a selection of 2 long jams and a short one at the end. For the second part I have a large number of shorter patches/jams to go through that are more diverse.
I also have chapter 5 recorded and it is a special one and uses the loophole introduced by the "mostly synth" part of the series name.

Would love to get some feedback and would love to know what you like in this and other strymon Volante videos and if you use the Volante with mostly synth let me know how you are getting on with the pedal.

Some tech stuff:
Audio and video recorded live into iPhone 11 using Zoom U-24 audio interface

Audio from strymon into Mackie 1202-VLZ3 mixer and then into the U-24. any other pedals will be shown in the patch description.

No other processing except level normalisation

Video effects using iPhone.

Berlin, April 23rd, 2020 – Native Instruments today releases its first three MASSIVE X Expansions; RUSH, PULSE, and SCENE.

Each Expansion contains 150 presets for the synth tailored toward a certain sound, created by expert sound designers who were involved in the development of MASSIVE X and the creation of its factory library.

Made for producers, composers, and musicians, MASSIVE X Expansions provide fundamental, professional sound design for those who need a certain sound, and can be endlessly tweaked, patched, and rewired for those who want to take things further.

RUSH sees dancefloor-focused, melodic leads and pads come to the fore – ranging from complex and shifting patches to cutting, front-and-center sounds.

PULSE is oriented toward bass patches – from the contemporary, edgy sounds indigenous to its digital architecture, to forward-thinking takes on low-end classics.

SCENE is geared towards soundscapes, textures, and atmospheres, and exploits MASSIVE X’s versatility.

Native is celebrating the launch by offering all three Expansions for the price of two. Anybody who has so far slept on MASSIVE X can upgrade or buy it with a $50 discount, and will additionally get RUSH, PULSE, and SCENE for free. The special offer is available until May 10th, 2020."
