Erica Synths' New Oscillator-Free Steampipe at Superbooth 2023

video upload by Reverb

"Erica Synths teamed up with Dutch company 112 dB to create the Steampipe—a unique, eight-voice, oscillator-free synth designed to mimic the way sound is created by wind instruments. The unit features three main sections: Steam, Pipe, and Reverberation.

The Steam section is modeled after the lungs and mouth of a wind instrument player, with a generator that creates the flow of "steam" and an envelope that determines the force in which it's blown out. The Pipe section is similar to a flute, featuring a push dial within the feedback box that bounces the steam to generate tone. Lastly, the reverberation section adds space and ambience."

"First, very quick, demo of a four-voice reSEMble, four PM Foundations reSEMble panels in monophonic mode. What if an SEM had three VCOs instead of two? That's twelve VCOs! What if, maybe halfway through fooling with these, you mixed in four wavefolders? The four panels are panned in stereo, listen loud if you can. https://www.tindie.com/products/pmfou..."

"One of EML's final products. Super rare bird, almost impossible to find in the wild. The Synkey was one of the very first synthesizers to offer patch memory over it's unique plastic punch-card system. Released in both programmable and non-programmable versions. This is the programmable model, however it does not include any punch-cards.

Features 13 oscillators along with 13 pushbuttons (semitones) on the front panel which allows one-finger chords to be played by selecting which intervals of the chromatic scale. Super cool feature.

Single multimode voltage controlled filter, capable of continuously variable response from lowpass to bandpass to high pass (a feature of most EML synths). ADSR envelope generators were provided for the voltage controlled amplifier (which was capable of being switched into a ring modulator mode) and the VCF; however, the decay knob controlled both the decay time and the release time. A single low frequency oscillator (referred to by EML as the "modulation oscillator") was provided, with five selections of waveforms.

This synthesizer was just serviced, along with an new AC power cable. Rare, rare, rare!

"This really nice example of a Early 70's Vintage Analog Synth has been refinished in Custom Third Rock Blue with Curly Maple Side Caps and Spaulted Maple side panels. It performs and sounds as new. We were really Surprised how the outputs had very little baseline noise compared to other synths of this era. Of course, this observation is subjective. This Synth includes the original wood pieces for those of you who would prefer a more vintage look."

Superbooth 2023: MyVolts - Power And Connection Solutions

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Caroline from MyVolts, a power solution company based in Dublin, at Superbooth 2023. They showcased their range of Power Solutions, audio cables, and sync cables. Caroline demonstrated the mobile power solutions, which included powering three volkas and a volka mix using MyVault 9 volt ripcord plugged into a USB power bank. The power cables were daisy-chained with candy cords and required only one USB port to run the entire setup for hours. They also launched a new product, The Mult, which is a port duplicator that shows the polarity of the signal with a bi-color LED. The Mult can be used for modular gates, clocks, triggers, and other signals.

MyVolts also displayed the ReVolt line of batteries, which run from Triple A's up to D cells, to extend the battery life of devices. They have made pocket operator cases, including the Re-Fault battery system, which has two dummy batteries and a power port. This system powers two pocket operators with only one USB port, effectively reducing battery waste. MyVolts also has a small mixer with noise filtering, perfect for desktop musicians. They test their products thoroughly to ensure noise is kept to a minimum, and they are attempting to solve the problems of musicians without sacrificing anything.

ANTI GAS Therapy // Syntakt goes Cinematic

video upload by Dave Mech

"I released a course for Syntakt! Get here: https://davemech.live/shop

I couldn't attend Superbooth this year (our son can be born any day now!), so I've been reading and watching all the new releases from a distance. This has caused an overflow of GAS synthtoms (padum tss) of course. So I thought I'd focus some extra attention towards the syntakt to see if I can dive deeper into its sound design capabilities to keep my mind from overthinking new possibilities in other gear. This cinematic piece rolled out. Hope you enjoy this one!

Pattern made completely within Syntakt. Post processing used: A small hint of OTO Boum and OTO BAM and a bit of EQ. If anybody is interested in how and why I apply these, let me know in the comments. I might do a video about this."

Superbooth 2023: Robot Dog Music - Solo - Improbable Sequence Series

video upload by sonicstate

"Robot Dog Music, a company based in Osaka, Japan, presented their modules at Super Booth 2023. Jason from Robot Dog Music, introduced us to the Solo ribbon strip controller, which has been available for some time, but now features a beveled faceplate. It has onboard quantization, a Legato function, and a hold feature.

Next we met the Improbable Sequence series which are two new modules, both three HP, built to run on the principles of loopable randomness. The Gates module generates random gate patterns, while the CV module generates random CV patterns. They have up to 32 steps, density control, balance control, accent output, and swing, including negative swing, which is unusual in Eurorack. They have reset and generate inputs for automating the button process. The last product is a case for the Solo, designed to be sturdy and backpack-friendly, with LED mount points for DIY enthusiasts.

Solo Price: 349 USD. Available: June 2023

Case Price: 499 USD

Improbable Sequence Series Price: 199 USD each

http://robotdogmusic.com/"

"Solo, the ribbon controller I always wanted!

Solo is an intelligent ribbon controller for your Eurorack system! In standard mode it is designed to sit in-between your sequencer, and the destination (oscillator or other). Solo watches both CV and Gate signals, and while not touching the ribbon strip, Solo will simply pass the signals along to it’s destination. HOWEVER, when you touch the ribbon strip, the magic begins to happen!

Solo watches for incoming gate signals, and will only change notes on a gate trigger, making sure to keep you in time automatically, allowing you to “Solo” atop any standard sequence! Once you let go, the sequence returns to normal.

Solo offers a variety of other modes too! Transposition mode, in both a quantized (transpose) and Unquantized mode (pitch bend) are available."

Superbooth 2023: Lambda Synthetics - PolyPulse

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Ward from Lambda Synthetics about their new product, PolyPulse, which is a live performance workstation. It follows unconventional and algorithmic routes that offers five tracks, each with a polyrhythmic sequencer on one side digital synthesis on the other. Currently, the digital synth has FM and additive synthesis, and several forms of sampling, but more will be added in the future. The sequencer is based on polyrhythms, mixing time intervals which combine to create complex rhythms and melodies, while the touchpads on each track provide expression while on stage.

PolyPulse is currently in the production prototype stage, and there is still a lot of software to be done. It is expected to be released in Q3 or Q4 of this year. External integration can be achieved using clock signals for modular gear, and there are eight balanced outputs on the back. Poly Pulse has a sampling engine that can create new melodies using pitch-tracked bass samples, a drum synthesizer, and various synthesis engines that can have up to 20 tracks of polyphony depending on synthesis engine.

Price: TBC

https://lambdasynthetics.com/"

The PolyPulse

... is an unconventional standalone performance workstation for the musician who isn't afraid to experiment.

Key features

5 track standalone performance workstation
An intuitive interface to create complex (poly) rhythms and melodies
Sound morphing interface controlled by touchpads
Multiple polyphonic synthesis/sampling engines
Multichannel audio effects
The instrument is still under development. The feature set and physical construction is subject to change.

Superbooth 2023: This Is Not Rocket Science - Bopp And Steve

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Stijn from This Is Not Rocket Science at Superbooth 2023, who showed us their new flagship module called Bopp and Steve Deconstructed Spatial Effect. The module is a combination of a reverb, delay, pitch shifter, and diffuser, all mixable and matchable to create a customized reverb. The signal input hits a diffuser for early reflections, a delay for pre-delay, and a reverb tail for a glossy reverb with a shimmer effect. There's also a chord pitch shifter which can be controlled with polyphonic MIDI pitch shifting for playing chords with reverb tails.

Although it is still currently in development, Bopp and Steve is already festooned with 16 knobs, a bunch of CVs, and promises more effects to come, including more reverb tail types.

Available: Winter 2023. Price: around 440 Euros"

"Bopp & Steve Space Effect

With this module every sound is bigger on the inside and we can finally know how many angels fit on a pin-header. Between the input and the output your soundwave is shot through space and changes occur. BOPP & STEVE let you in at different points to tweak and trim their spatial effects until you find the exact place in the universe you were looking for. BOPP & STEVE reverberates, diffuses, delays and shifts pitch of whatever you send into it. Based on a deconstructed audio path and intricate DSP these fabulous sounds come alive. We connected the virtual with physical reality. Making an instrument by giving you tangible parameters, connecting your fingers to bits floating in space.

PITCH
Pitch modes let you shift pitch chromatically (regular) three notes at time (chord) or detuned and unquantized (free). The chord mode is unique as far as we can tell. All modes are CV and Midi controllable. This is where we stuck all the angels on the pin-header. Following the note of your input a choir of harmonious notes will start sounding. Instant etherealness. With Pitch Point you select a point in the audio path where the pitch gets shifted. Pressing the Pitch Point LED button you will see little LEDs turn on (and off) at the wet input point, the diffuse point, the delay point, the tail point, wet output and dry output point or even on the feedback of the delay point. Transpose lets you set how far you transpose from -2 octaves to +2 octaves. Control gives you control over something else for every pitch mode. In Regular mode it lets you control inertia, in Chord mode it lets you control chord type and in Free mode it controls detune.

AUDIO PATH
The audio path in BOPP & STEVE is input – diffuse – delay – tail – output. Diffuse smears your sound over time which seems to change the shape of the space you are in – and has its own Flavour setting you can tweak. Delay holds your sound over time which seems to make the space you are in bigger. In the Tail the diffuse and delay of your sound merge together and travels into infinity. A Main knob lets you set the wet/dry mix of all these spatial effects on your output. The Envelope of the dry audio path has its own tracker output that you can invert with the knob besides it. For the Delay effect you can choose between bouncing between left/right (pingpong), a supershort Karplus-Strong physical model (waveguide) or staccato repetition (multitap). You can tweak the Length, Feedback and Pattern of these delay modes. The tail can be smoothly tapering off (dense), coming and going (float) or choppy and granular with space in between (sparse). You can tweak the Length, Chorality and Temprature of the different tails. Freeze holds the sound in the Delay and the Tail so they become infinite.

ORIGIN
The heritage of BOPP & STEVE starts with a reverb that Stijn has been working on since the 2000s. A version of it is in the Fenix IV Dual Delay as the Reverb mode with a “chunky shimmer and a phat detune”. Stijn has further deconstructed their Early Reflections into two parts (Delay and Diffuse) and created three types of Tail (Dense, Sparse, Float). At Superbooth23 we are presenting a prototype. The hardware is 99% settled, the software is mostly functional but not yet feature-complete and not all glooped together yet. We expect to produce modules before the end of the year so everyone can have BOPP & STEVE for Christmas.

Sales price will be 440 EUR inc tax."

Superbooth 2023: Kiviak Instruments - WoFi

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Romain from Kiviak Instruments, a new French company based in the south of France and with an office in Berlin. They have presented their first product, called WoFi, which is a sample-based synthesizer that looks like a virtual analog but is full digital and sample-based. The machine is connected to a web-based cloud platform where users can share presets with the community, upload samples and make backups. The concept is to keep a very simple workflow, and the small factor keyboard can be used anywhere as it runs on a battery.

Wolfie has ten voices of polyphony and a granular effect that Kiviak Instruments designed to be somewhere between Shimmer and granular synthesis. You can choose the machine model you want to emulate, such as old 12 bit units or even gritty 3 bit models. WoFi has a built in mic, one envelope and one LFO that you can assign to any parameter you want just by clicking on learn and choosing the parameter. WoFi has internal storage and memory cards, and with the cloud platform, it will be have completely unlimited storage for free.

Superbooth 2023: Expressive E - Osmose, More examples and info

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Arnaud from Expressive E at Superbooth 2023 about the Osmose, their keyboard and standalone synthesizer. Although it is not new, the Osmose still draws a crowd, and Arnaud said that delivery to original backers was successful, and new pre-order and reservation rounds have been reopened with smaller lead times than in 2019. Users are most appreciative of the ergonomics and continuous control of the keybed, which can be bent and produce sound even with a light brush of the finger. Additionally, the Osmose features a built-in sound engine developed by Haken Audio, unlike most MIDI controllers and synthesizers that need to be linked to a computer to function. Users are requesting more sounds and MIDI control functions, and Expressive E is working on integrating these new features. Arnaud showcased the Osmose's versatility by demonstrating some favorite patches, including a flute sound that features the press glide function, which is non-time fixed and modulated by the player's fingers.

Osmose Price: 1,799 Euros"

Superbooth 2023: Modal - Limited Edition Cobalt And Argon 8

"At Superbooth 2023, Sonic State caught up with Christian from Modal Electronics who showcased the limited edition Argon 8 and Cobalt 8 synthesizers. In celebration of Modal Electronics' 10-year anniversary, the Argon 8 pays homage to the Modal 002 with its color scheme and comes with firmware version 3.0 and new features. The limited edition synthesizer will be available in stores in September and there will be only 100 units worldwide. It will be priced the same as the regular Argon 8, and it is only available in the 37 key version.

The Cobalt 8 synthesizer, which comes in the dark color scheme of the Modal 008, will be availablearound Christmas time. Modal Electronics is currently seeking customer feedback to decide if they will release the Cobalt 8 in a 37 key version, 61 key version, or as a module. If you want to get your hands on these limited edition Modals, keep an eye out for their release at the end of 2023."

Superbooth 2023: Elektron - Analog Heat + FX

video upload by sonicstate

"Jean Michel and Christian from Elektron met us at Super Booth 2023 to talk about their latest release, the Analog Heat Plus Effects. The device adds chorus, delay, reverb, bit crushing, sample rate reduction, compression, and a bass focus feature to the original Analog Heat Mark II. The bass focus feature enables users to sum up the frequencies they want in mono, which tightens up the bass. Superbooth 2023: Pittsburgh Modular - Taiga

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Richard Nicol, CEO of Pittsburgh Modular at Superbooth 2023. While they are not presenting anything new, they are proud to show Taiga, which is only a few months old. The three-oscillator monosynth with dedicated wave folders and unique waveforms. They call the initial wave shape seeds, and their wave folder allows them to hit it in fascinating ways and create unique sounds that are not found elsewhere. They aim to innovate at the same pace as digital synthesis, adding unique features to analog synthesis. Richard also talked about their dynamics controller, which is similar to a low-pass gate, providing organic plucky sounds that decay naturally.

Pittsburgh Modular is sneaking in a few new things, including their local parks oscillator and the toad phase shifter, which is a 12-stage analog phase shifter. Richard's favorite panel is the toad, which has a red toad with the LFO as the eye. They also have the Narwhal module, which is their take on analog physical modeling, using analog resistors and capacitors to create something that sounds real. The cymbals produced by the Narwhal sound authentic, but they can be tweaked to fall apart and become very digital and synthetic. We also got a look at some experiments including the Local Parks Oscillator and the Toad 12 stage analogue phase shifter, and Richard hinted there may be a drum machine on the horizon.

Taiga Price: 799 USD"

Superbooth 2023: Retrokits - RK-8

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Gerrit from Retrokits, makers of some of the finest and niftiest midi utilities and hardware. He gave us an update on their latest product, the RK8, a MIDI sequencer/recorder. Initially designed as a modern replacement of the MMT8, they have added a load of new features, including the much-requested multi-track length. You have eight tracks that can each hold 16 MIDI channels, and you can apply transformations to each channel individually. They have also added real-time MIDI recording, meaning that pitch bend and mod wheel changes can be recorded in addition to steps. The firmware has been updated to version 2.0, which now includes Bluetooth support, allowing the use of wireless devices.

Gerrit also demonstrated how the RK8 can be used as a master brain, as you can have up to 100 parts, each with different beat lengths, which can be changed seamlessly. You can mute and unmute parts, play with build-ups, and transpositions while playing parts. Gerrit showed us how it can be used in a performance and even connected it to an OP-Z, which received MIDI signals from the RK8. The RK8 can also send out DIN sync signals, allowing it to sync with older devices.

RK-8 Price: 359 Euros. RK-8 with wood panels price: 409 Euros"

Superbooth 2023: Buchla - Limited Edition Music Easel

video upload by sonicstate

"Nick from Buchla showed us their limited edition 50th Anniversary Music Easel. This special edition includes classic 208 voices and original old-school knobs and meter from the 70s. It comes with a gold keyboard and will be sold with its original Halliburton metal briefcase. The Music Easel has the same patching and control interface as the original, and the new edition even has some added extras like patch points and midi over USB-C.

Nick also demonstrated Buchla's Program Manager Card, which allows users to scroll through and select sounds. The card can be embedded below the surface of the module using the embedding kit offered by Buchla, perfect for those who are always using it and don't want it sticking out, or cards be inserted into the edge connector as usual. The new Music Easel is expected to ship in the fall alongside the special edition, which is available for order in June only.

Special Edition Music Easel Price: 8,000 - 10,000 USD"

Superbooth 2023: Crosspatch - TriggerPad

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Mitja from CrossPatch at Superbooth 2023 about their new TriggerPad module. The module is designed for sequencing dynamic triggers and uses an 8x8 grid sequencer, such as LaunchPad, to create sequences. The workflow is tailored to live performances, with no deep menu diving required. The 8 channels can be selected on the top row, and the length of the pattern can be quickly changed. With the ability to save 64 patterns and chain them together, the TriggerPad offers a lot of flexibility in one module. It will be available for shipping at the end of the summer with a price point of around 250 plus VAT.

The TriggerPad has eight trigger outputs with eight levels of velocity, making it perfect for use with drum modules that can take dynamic trigger inputs. Other features include the ability to shuffle patterns, and retrigger at fast rates. Additionally, the TriggerPad has a session mode for recording patterns by playing them. Longer pulses can also be used to create step modulations, making it a versatile tool for modulating other parameters in a Eurorack setup.

TriggerPad Shipping: End of summer 2023

Superbooth 2023: Tiptop Audio - 296 Spectral Processing Module & Cables

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Gur Milstein from Tiptop Audio at Superbooth 2023, where he showed us their recreation of the Buchla 296 spectral processor module. The 296 has 16 bands, each of which have three bandpass filters, which are extremely narrow and amplified so it's not your typical EQ, but rather a sound design machine with all those inputs and outputs and its internal cross modulation for vocoding and beyond.

296 Spectral Processing Module Available: Summer 2023

Price: TBC"

Superbooth 2023: Tiptop Audio - Art - Polytip Cables

"We met with Gur from Tiptop Audio to find out about their latest project called Art. Art produces a signal they’ve been working on for over a decade that fixes the tuning problems of Eurorack systems. With Art, they can link multiple modules together and play polyphonically. This led them to develop discrete polyphonic synthesizers that can be built from separate oscillators and filters, and they also revived the Vortex 6, a fully polyphonic module which is a clone of the PPG wave 2.0 with 8-bit converters from the '80s and has six built-in oscillators. Vortex 6 can use their newly developed cable, the Polytip cable, to patch the audio out from the Vortex 6 into the audio in of the octopus filter.

With the Polytip cable, they can patch up to eight signals that carry all the signals, such as the eight filters, eight envelopes, and six VCAs of the modules. This opens up a whole new world of sonic possibilities and Tiptop are continuously working on this project and plan to release more modules that use Art in the future."

Destroy the Earth ( Dirtywave M8)

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Whipped up this track yesterday, Might to a break down video as it's probably interesting.

Had no motivation to be creative lately, just been waiting for A.I to take over and end it all. My laptop died, and some other b.s. This video is filmed on my phone as I just didn't feel like doing the whole DSLR and syncing today. Hope thats ok.

The track has some commodore 64 speech thats being live mangled, some samples from a foreign station (maybe it isn't I don't understand it) that seems to be illegally broadcasting on airport frequencies. A snippet of my eternal ambient space ship sleep drone that I will one day post. If you have a sub this should have some good bass. There some lofi krell stuff going on in here, and managed to get hypesynth feedbacking like a guitar amp. other weird techniques, lot of generative stuff in this.

Still don't have OBS etc working again on this second hand laptop so it has been a bit of a set back."
