MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: Moog Music Booth & Sub Phatty Performance

matrixsynth·252 videos

http://www.moogmusic.com
A quick performance demo of the Moog Sub Phatty by Amos Gaynes.  Let this one evolve.  I think Amos was trying to put me in a trance and it worked.  I could have kept listening forever.  The Sub Phatty sounds great - substantial, massive and raw, and of course Amos rocks.  Below you'll find a ton of pics including the 50th Anniversary Gold Voyager and the Aluminum Voyager.  They both looked pretty incredible in person.  I definitely like the gold one more in person than pics, fingerprints and all.  The white Moogs look very sharp in person as well.  If you scroll down you'll find a little non-Moog surprise.  I asked Amos about it and he said it was from his friend who makes it.  I thought that was pretty cool.

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: Big City Music Booth Pics

Tons of pics for tons of gear represented at the Big City Music booth this year. Pictured to the left are Roger Cordell and Stephi of Big City Music. Unfortunately I forget the name of the gentleman playing the new Mellotron M4000D MINI. I believe it is Markus, but I'm not 100% sure. Check out how slim it is - the Mellotron not the gentleman. Apparently it has the same specs as the model M4000D with a high quality Fatar keyboard that is velocity sensitive, weights only 21 pounds (9.5 kg), and should run $2100 when introduced.

Other new gear highlights at the booth include the Metasonix S-2000 Vacuum-Tube synthesizer (you'll find some details in this post for one that is currently for sale), the F-1 Complex Distortion Pedal, the new KOMA Electronic pedals, and the Jomox Akasha (check out the video here).

Other brands featured include Analogue Systems,  DewanatronDirty Boy PedalsCwejman, Critter & Guitari, Vermona, Eowave (who had their own booth this year), and various eurorack manufacturers."

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: Studiologic Sledge Pics

Some pics of the of the Studiologic Sledge with the synth engine by Waldorf.  The stand out for me on the Sledge is the interface.  Everything is big and spread out which invites you to explore it in a way you might not on Waldorf's own Blofeld synth.  Note that although the technology is similar between the two, they are slightly different.  If you haven't watched them yet, see this post for a video overview of the engine, and this one for audio demos from our friends at Sonicstate.

Side note: They had a HUGE banner.  That's it in the background.  One more pic of the top half below.

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: KORG MS20 Mini Pics

The booth was packed, I knew what this was, and I knew it would get plenty of coverage, so I took three quick pics and moved on.  Click them for their full size glory.

The key take away for me was that like the original this does not support the 1 Volt per Octave format of eurorack and other modern modular sythesizers, so if you plan to use this with one, you'll need a convertor like the recently announced Harvestman English Tear.

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2013: RADIKAL TECHNOLOGIES Booth

This year I paid a quick visit to one of my favorites, Jorg Schaaf of RADIKAL TECHNOLOGIES.  He was also the man behind Quasimidi.  He was showing his ACCELERATOR keyboard with iPad editor and the SPECTRALIS 2, both great sounding synths.   My videos below do not do them justice so be sure to check out the RADIKAL site for proper demos, Jorg's YouTube channel (some great music especially if you like Pink Floyd), or of course the RADIKAL label below. In the first video Jorg was showing me his iPad editor for the ACCELERATOR.  In the second part the drum sound was active so let's just say the effect was not intended. :) I told him they were going to kick him out.  You can hear us both laughing at the end.  The next video is a demo of some of the drum sounds on the SPECTRALIS 2, followed by a demo sequence.  Jorg was going to play a lead on the ACCELERATOR but had a little trouble with the audio.  It happens.  NAMM glitches aside, these are great synths, both in sound quality and feature set.  The ACCELERATOR actually has an accelerometer built in that you can assign to different parameters.  Not sure how often you might use it but it would definitely be a fun thing to try out, especially on unknowing friends. More pics below. Be sure to click them for the super size shots.

Audio Damage Bitcom Now Available

"There are subtle plug-ins you put on the two-buss to give a nice gentle vibe to a track. Bitcom is not one of those. There is no "analog modeling" in this effect. There is no warmth or tube saturation. It is utterly devoid of anything to which the word "vintage" can be applied. Bitcom is a modern bit-shredding digital banshee that beggars description and lives on the edge of instability.

In a nutshell, a step sequencer drives a custom-designed bitcrusher, with a synth sidechain. But that sentence doesn't begin to describe the abuse that Bitcom is capable of. We pulled out every trick in the book to build a modern electronic music effect that can turn even the most sedate input in to a swinging, screaming pain-monkey, wreaking havoc on lesser sounds.

Bitcom requires OS X Intel 10.6.0 or later, or Windows XP SP 2 or later; the installers include both 32- and 64-bit versions."

You'll find it here.

Wolfgang Palm's PPG WaveMapper for iPad Now Available

WaveMapper - Wolfgang Palm

"PPG WaveMapper is the second next-generation iOS based synth from Wolfgang Palm, who in 2012 released the PPG WaveGenerator to critical acclaim from both press and public.

In final development the PPG WaveMapper offers iPad users a second synthesiser to compliment the already loved PPG WaveGenerator from Wolfgang Palm. PPG WaveMapper allows the user the opportunity to create limitless sounds from this unique and powerful new technology.

PPG WaveMapper features the Sound Map, which maps the various sounds in a way to easily access and experiment with them, more importantly the PPG WaveMapper features a new synthesis system which maps the waveforms of a sound into a new kind of wavetable which preserves the sound characteristics better than classic Wavetable synthesis and at the same time allows for the manipulations which make WT synthesis so unique.

The Mapping window is the visualisation of a pool of programs on which “modules” float. Those modules represent certain parameters of the synthesiser engine and each module can be placed on one of 32 programs. The moment an item is placed on map then the parameters of that module will take on the settings of those parameters in the underlying program on the Mapping window.

People who do not posses synth-programming skills can use this mapping technology as a starting point to create complex sounds. For example a user can drag a string sound source onto a drum envelope, or a guitar sound onto a string envelope – the concept is simple, yet incredibly powerful.
Power users can delve deep into the back end of any sound using a full set of professional features;

▪New Sound map concept – create new sounds playful and experimental
▪3 types of synthesis – the optimal type for kind of each sounds
▪Classic wavetables – for the typical PPG sounds
▪Time compressed samples – more authentic sounds, allowing analysis of user samples
▪Pure samples – classic sample playback Analyzer – convert your own samples into the new format or into wavetables
▪3 oscillators capable for totally independent sound sources
▪90 sound resources – a huge sound palette, from real instruments to abstract wavetables
▪4 parameter editor pages – comfortable and detailed access to all the parameters
▪3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
▪Ringmodulator
▪Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.
▪Dual amplifier, for versatile control of 2 audio signals as well as panning.
▪13 Envelopes, for independent control of pitch, waveform, filter and noise
▪gain and panning
▪4 LFOs – with 5 waveforms
▪Delay/Reverb effect
▪Flexible Step Sequencer / Arpeggiator combination
▪Schematic touch keyboard – Build your own keyboard, with the keys you prefer for your music.
▪Powerful sound browser – sorting by category, bank management
▪Virtual and Hard-MIDI in/out – sending/receiving keys and controllers.
▪Audiobus support.
▪10 min audio recording and Audio copy.

Update on I Dream of Wires Documentary Release

via Modular: the documentary on Facebook:

"When is "I Dream Of Wires" going to be released?

Hi,

My name is Jason Amm, and I'm the producer for "I Dream Of Wires" (IDOW), an upcoming documentary about the resurgence of modular synthesizers. If you're reading this, you probably already know all about IDOW, and have been anticipating it's release for quite a while. Chances are you may have even contributed money to one of our IndieGoGo fundraising campaigns, and have been wondering when you're going to receive your perk.

It was suggested in our IndieGoGo fundraising write-ups that the film would be completed sometime around Sept/Oct 2012. When we started this project, IDOW was in our minds going to be a small, straight-to-DVD niche film, and so this release date was a realistic goal. But the scope of the film, and the ever-growing interest in it, has gotten so much larger than we originally expected. We've been overwhelmed by all of the support from everyone following our progress, and it's largely this massive interest in the project that's ended up making it so much bigger than we originally anticipated. Though it has delayed the release, we are extremely excited by the wealth and quality of the material we've collected. With just two people working on IDOW (myself and director Robert Fantinatto), the task of sorting through over a hundred amazing interviews, and organizing those into a coherent and compelling film, has been daunting to say the least. We've really struggled to work out how to do this properly in a way that will satisfy the community of hardcore modular synthesizer fanatics (ourselves included), while also hopefully having an impact outside of that world.

So... "When is 'I Dream Of Wires' going to be released?"

Analog Craftsman Polivoks Mixer module demo by Mecanikill?

Published on Jan 31, 2013 Me CanIKill·3 videos

"Here's a demo of the new Analog Craftsman module the Polivoks Mixer. To show how it add nice distortion I chose to use a regular Dotcom Q106 that a lot are familiar with and split the outputs and ran one through a Dotcom mixer and the other through the Polivoks. The top signal you see on the scope is the Polivoks and the bottom the Dotcom mixer. It really adds a aggressive sound to it. Product description and info as follows:
As with our acVOKS VCF, this is a recreation of a section from the Russian Polivoks synthesizer. This time we've tackled the mixer section. Fundamentally nothing special, but everyone needs a mixer and this one sounds different. It is designed and built directly from the original schematics and with those unique Russian op amps and transistors. This three channel mixer can balance yours levels from glasnost to a subtle version of revolution (just a touch of added harmonic content.)

Grain Bastard - Borderland Impakt (Jan 2013)

Grain Bastard - Borderland Impakt (Jan 2013) from Grain Bastard on Vimeo.

"Hi. Thanks for watching my video.

In this one I use the superb app 'Borderlands Granular' & 'Impaktor' with a little help from my MD SPS-1, DSI Mopho & the Monotron. The snow had gone so I felt a little more energetic and upped the tempo along with the noise!!!! :)

I'm also considering getting another camera to add some other angles in the videos, to make them a bit more interesting and hopefully show you the iPad screens a little better. Video production is something new to me so I'm also learning video editing as I go along and wanted a little bit of practice before I spend any cash. Therefore I added in a few fake 2nd camera angle shots to practice with the editor (Pinnacle Studio on the iPad) and see how they looked etc. However, I should have tried with a different track as due to the way Impaktor works, I had to wear headphones when performing to stop the sound from the speakers triggering it. This meant I had no audio on the main video take to sync the line audio to which I capture from the mixer!!! I also edited a section from the video as I felt it was too long, so the audio/video sync is off in a few places as trying to align video to the audio by matching flashing lights was getting a little tedious!!!!

You learn from your mistakes though :) - I'll try a bit harder next time.

Thanks for watching - more music/sounds at www.soundcloud.com/punisha

Peace.

PS - that's one of my dogs toys on the floor in the background, nothing illegal!!!! Lol, I admit it looks suspect :)"

"A midi controller which allows you to create your own custom layouts. My first impression was a very clear UI, very easy to use, very well thought out... And I have to say that it is also my last impression. I will just add a few things... The App is really steady. You have a big choice of modules organised in 9 categories. Each of them comes with its own setting menu. Note that it is the only Midi Controller which comes with a dedicated music sheet module! Note that to use this module, you will have to import a PDF file into S1MidiTrigger by using iTunes File Sharing or the Open in feature. Something that I also really like in this App, is that you can align objects on the Grid, Group them, Copy them with their settings... Another great feature is the SnapShots... Let me explain: A layout is my "Studio Set Up". For example, I have created a setup for controlling a Virtual Synthesizer (a Keyboard & a X / Y Pad). A Transport (to control a Virtual Drum Machine or Sequencer) and a Score Module to display my Tab. This is my Set Up and I use it everyday, for a lot of Songs. So, for each Song I will be able (with just a Tap) to save a SnapShot, to create a Set List and to share it via email or iTunes File Sharing. I really love this App, so without any hesitation, I will rate it as a Killer App!"
