"I had all my gear torn down for a performance that never happened, so I decided to take advantage of everything in the studio being scattered to change the setup around a bit.

I initially started playing just to check signal flow and ended up with this. All tracks performed/recorded live in a single take with no post production or editing of any kind done afterward. Sequencing was handled by my Arturia BeatStep Pro. Instruments mixed into Behringer Xenyx X2442USB mixer with a little reverb and delay added with the onboard effects processor, audio recorder from mixer tape out to PreSonus Audiobox iTwo, into my iPhone 7 Plus.

The video is just random footage of my work computer on the fritz, some waves from the Makena lava flow beach on Maui, Hawaii, and me improving this piece. All audio/video recorded with the camera app on iPhone 7 Plus and edited in iMovie.

"Just a quick demo of my 'Hoedown' patch I use with ELP tribute Noddy's Puncture. I have 5 oscillators for 'audio' in total. The first two are unison, using both square & sawtooth waveforms - with a third set a 5th up (via my custom red lever switch...) and also using square & sawtooth. Those three oscillators are then affected by the EG - via an attenuator, which sets the final pitch they climb up to. Another two oscillators - using just the sawtooth waveforms - are also set to unison but an octave higher than the first two and are not affected by the EG... basically making a 'drone'. All tunings are critical to getting the sound right. It's definitely not an easy one to set up live..!"

I am venturing deeper into the world of modular, still not sure whats really going on but I think for myself and my own workflow that I am starting to find the magic ratio between infinite noodling and actual music making. Trying to not make overcomplicated stuff, and just go with the flow when something sound and feels right..

My main sound source is the braids, which is being modulated by the maths and tides.. drone style, the beatstep just sends voltage when I want to change the key. 0-coast is not in use here. On the monologue I wanted to do my trademark solo style sound.. and yep, it sounds just like the ms-20.

EarthQuaker Devices transmisser does the desert wind sound on top the modular sounds, adding to this some minor delay on the Caverns to build the echoing spaces for the modular. KORG monologue gets a simple delay + reverb in the presonus 16.0.2 mixer.. then straight into 2-track!

"Excellent condition analog synth. Perfect functional, but cosmetically shows some use. Two oscillators. Sequencer. Six voice polyphony. Sounds really similar to the Juno series (6 and 60) but you have the two oscillators (DCOs) and you can control them independently and do pulse width modulation (PMW). this has the control unit original to it-- the roland PG 200."

Dates back to the summer of 2008, when I was working with the folks over at DubSounds, doing the presets for it.

It's a shame the main designer/coder/GUI artist left for no reason.... it's like he walked off of the face of the Earth! Still, I use this Polymoog from time to time for its authenticity and charm..... nothing sounds like a Polymoog.

Novation Peak 8-Voice Desktop Synth Moogfest Demo

"Peak is an 8-voice desktop polyphonic synthesizer with three New Oxford Oscillators for each voice. The oscillators sound completely analogue by being high-quality NCOs (Numerically-Controlled Oscillators), but gain the flexibility of the digital domain with 17 digital wavetables. They can also become a linear FM source using either the analogue-sounding NCOs or digital wavetables – so are able to cross-modulate in an recursive loop.

The synth has a resonant multi-mode analog filter for each voice, and three distortion points for each voice – pre-filter, post-filter and global – in an analogue signal chain. Peak is capable of receiving polyphonic aftertouch, which puts expression right at your fingertips. Reverb, delay and chorus effects are at one's disposal, and there is also an on-board arpeggiator.

The modulation system puts a 16-slot modulation matrix and 16 direct assignments in the main controls, cleverly arranged for intuitive patch design and sound editing. There are three ADSR envelopes and two LFOs for each voice, and more elaborate movements and secondary ‘via’ assignments are made just a few menu button presses away. In addition, two animate buttons give live performers instant one-touch transformation of patches.

Peak connects to modular systems via a CV modulation input, and has MIDI I/O on five-pin DIN ports, so other MIDI gear can be connected. Via USB, Peak can be plugged into Mac or PC, where unlimited patches can be kept using the Components software. Track Select buttons jump between banks of eight tracks/channels, and the bottom row of buttons map to Mute, Solo or Record Arm. The top two rows of rotaries, meanwhile, are freely MIDI mappable – yours to assign as you see fit!"

"Two guys from Munich, Germany do live music with two big modular systems. The group is called 'Ströme' which is german for "electric currents". They are professional musicians. They played bass and drums for several years in the very successful bavarian band "La Brass Banda". The left one is Mario Schönhuber, the (former) bass player. He is doing most of the sequences and chords. The guy at the right system is Tobias Weber (drummer at La Brass Banda), he is doing all drums and percussive stuff.

Tobias uses in the first video the Doepfer A-157 for the drum programming, but changed now to a Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythm (can be seen in the Berlin video).

Marios uses a combination of Audio Damage Sequencer 1, Stillson Hammer, Intellijel Metropolis, and Make Noise Tempi for his bass sequences. In the first video he is using still a Roland JD-Xi for the chords, but recently he changed over to a Audio Damage Sequencer 1 which controls for Doepfer A-111-3 plus monophonic filter and vca (you may spot it in the Berlin video in the most upper row).

"Up for sale is extremely rare Soviet vintage polyphonic analog synthesizer 'FAEMI-1M'. It is a compact polyphonic analog synthesizer produced by Katchkanar radio equipment factory 'Formanta', which is the manufacturer of such well-known synthesizers as Polivoks, Formanta, Manual, Maestro etc. Faemi-1M is a "young brother" of a very popular synthesizer Polivoks. It bears the same logo on the package and retains some of its most impressive capabilities, for example the powerful resonance filter. The handy keyboard of the synthesizer has also remained unchanged. But unlike Polivoks, this synthesizer is entirely polyphonic (a so called "organ-string-synthesizer"), which makes it possible to merge several timbres with the addition of a timbre (Brass) passed through the filter."

"Prized ARP 2600, fully functional with original user manual and patch cords. This unit has been completely overhauled, every slider pots has been disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed 2 years ago. This is an early 2600 circa 1973 that has the patent infringed Moog filter 4012. The tolex is in pretty good condition given it is 44 years old. The face panel is in impeccable condition, no scratches or wear. The cable between the unit and keyboard has been replaced with a DIN type connector for a more reliable connection."
