via this auction

"A Nebulophone stylus synth and Pico Paso light controlled stepped tone synth, both are brand new and have never been used. Being sold as a pair. Full details of each below or at http://bleeplabs.com

Nebulophone

The Nebulophone is an Arduino based synth with a stylus keyboard.
- Eight waveforms
- Light controlled analog low-pass filter with five adjustable LFO LED modes.
- Perfect tuning across six octaves.
- Adjustable temperament and key.
- HYPERNOISE 30XX mode.
- Six arpeggio modes with adjustable rate.
- Programmable sequencer to easily make your own arpeggios right on the Nebulophone.
- Adjustable portamento.
- Infrared communications allows multiple Nebulophones to easily communicate. More about IR-sync.
- Open-source Arduino code and hardware

How do you listen to it?
The Nebulophone has a 1/4″ mono output designed to be plugged it into any mixer, amp, USB interface, etc. Headphones will work but are not recommended.

Are the keys touch sensitive?
The alligator clip must be used to trigger the keys. You can also wire the key pads to switches as some makers have done.

Pico Paso

The Pico Paso is an analog, light controlled, stepped tone noise synthesizer designed by Dr. Bleep.

It’s based on the concept of the Atari Punk synth, aka Forrest Mims’ stepped tone generator, but uses two triangle wave oscillators that can be combined or used separately. A wave shaper and square wave LFO are used to increase the aural ridiculousness.

How do you listen to it?
The Pico Paso has a 1/4″ mono output designed to be plugged it into any mixer, amp, USB interface, etc. Headphones will not work.

What are the SQU1 and 2 pads between the buttons for?
These are the square wave outputs of the main oscillators, allowing makers to use these signals along with the triangle waves. See the schematics for more info."

Barry Schrader CalArts Farewell Concert Set for Saturday, September 26

Broadcast live streaming video on Ustream
Update: live stream from ROD Webcast added above. Interview with Barry here.

Barry Schrader, one of the founders of the early electronic music scene at CalArts School of Music is retiring after 45 years. Many of you will remember him from previous posts here on MATRIXSYNTH. Here he is with a Buchla 500 in CalArts' studio B-304, along with Morton Subotnick and John Payne. If you are in the area, you do not want to miss this event. This is a chance to see one of the founders of our scene perform live. For those not in the area, the concert will be available on the live ROD Webcast. I hope to have an extensive interview with Barry Schrader in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that as well.

"Active in the promotion of electro-acoustic music, Schrader is the founder and the first president of SEAMUS (Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States). He has been involved with the inauguration and operation of several performance series such as SCREAM (Southern California Resource for Electro-Acoustic Music), the Currents concert series at Theatre Vanguard (the first ongoing series of electro-acoustic music concerts in the U.S.), and the CalArts Electro-Acoustic Music Marathon. He has written for several publications including The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Grolier’s Encyclopedia, Contemporary Music Review, and Journal SEAMUS, and is the author of the book Introduction to Electro-Acoustic Music."

via Barry Schrader:

"After what will have been 45 years on the faculty of the CalArts School of Music, I've decided to retire at the end of this academic year. Starting as a graduate student at CalArts in 1970, I was hired on the faculty by Mel Powell, then the Dean of the School of Music, in 1971. It’s been an incredible adventure to have experienced the evolution of the school from its beginnings at the temporary Burbank Villa Cabrini campus to its current incarnation as The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts. Along the way I’ve been fortunate to have had superb composers and performers as colleagues and friends, a host of talented students, and also to have met and worked with many brilliant people in various areas of the arts throughout the world.

To mark my retirement from CalArts, I’ve decided to present a farewell concert containing a variety of works from a forty-year period. This program will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 8:00 pm in CalArts’ Roy O. Disney Hall. Admission is free, and there will be a reception following the concert. I’ll also be giving away a limited number of my CDs to those that attend the event.

The concert will feature Mark Menzies on violin playing Fallen Sparrow, and Vicki Ray on piano performing Ravel. Also on the concert will be the original quadraphonic version of Trinity, along with short sections of Monkey King and The Barnum Museum. Adam Beckett’s groundbreaking 1973 film Heavy-Light will be shown, along with Michael Scroggins’ early computer video, 1921>1989.

For those that wish to hear and view the concert online, it will be available live on the live ROD Webcast."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Synthesizer with Plastic Overlay

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 original vintage analog polyphonic synthesizer. This is a Revision 2 board that has been upgraded to Revision 3 specifications, including MIDI added and memory banks upgraded to the full 128 offered in later revisions.

Cosmetically it is in Excellent Condition. There is a protective plastic cover on the face which has kept the graphics perfect and helps keep dust from getting inside the board. Corners are all great as shown in photos.

Functionally it is great with the only issue being that a few of the keys 'stutter' sometimes when pressed. I'm told this is an indicator that the key bed or contact wires need cleaning. I've had this in my studio since I bought from the original owner about 3 years ago, but have not used it much for the past year so I can see that. No other known issues. But I am not an expert on these machines and I don't want to dig into it myself so I am selling it 'as is'. Like all these machines the tuning drifts when on for awhile and that is why the automatic TUNE button is right on front in this revision."

Synthrotek MST VCO Now Available!

You've seen the videos first here and here. The Synthrotek MST VCO based on George Mattson's Mattson Mini Modular VCO design is now available here. This completes the Synthrotek MST eurorack line of modules and offers a complete system. Previously a George Mattson system was only available in the proprietary Mattson Mini Modular format along with a few individual eurorack modules from Division-6.

The new MST VCO is available in complete, kit, and PCB/Panel form.

Here's what Synthrotek has to say about the release:

"The circle is complete!

We are super stoked to announce that we now have the first very complete Eurorack monophonic voice in both kit and complete form. The VCO was the last of the modules that are essential to this complete voice. Customers can now build or purchase complete this module to either make a very complete monophonic ‘east-coast’ style voice or add this 100% analog beautiful sounding oscillator to their current system. Like most of the other modules in the MST line, the VCO was designed by synth legend George Mattson."

Using Moog Werkstatt-01 with Arturia Beatstep Pro

Published on Aug 29, 2015 Metatron's Cube

"I have seen people using many different configurations to connect with their Werkstatt using the CV expander board. Here is an example(several combined) using the Beatstep Pro that I posted on Facebook in the Moog Werkstatt group. I thought maybe this would help by uploading it to YouTube as well. Description of hook-up below.
I have both keyboard and CV in tune and matched(according to a crappy phone app tuner). Here were my settings and CV hook-ups:
Pitch CV out-VCO EXP FM IN, Gate CV out-GATE OUT(acts as a gate in for no clicking), and Velocity out-EG OUT(acts as an input, but can be left out, but sounds better/right in). VCA mode switch to EG, Sustain switch off, VCO mod switch to LFO, dest to PWM, VCF mod source to EG.
There is no clicking this way making it far more usable for recording. All of the knobs still function this way too, the attack and decay can be adjusted as well as all the other fuctions. I've noticed when hooking the CV connections up differently it works far worse and gets rid of/breaks some of the functions on the Werkstatt. Thanks for watching/listening!"

TTSH ARP 2600 Clone with Gate Booster Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Aug 28, 2015

via this auction

"For sale is a hand built, perfect circuit clone of the infamous ARP2600. The synth was professionally built by an electronics technician, with 15 years of experience in synthesizer repair. This synth was built with all of the rare, originally used electronic parts. Additionally, built into the case is a new spring reverb, built with the same specs and by the same company that provided the original reverb units for the ARP2600. There are two modifications that have been added to improve on the original designs. There are 3 separate VCO sub-regulator boards which further regulate the power delivered to the VCO’s; this corrects an original design flaw in the ARP2600 by providing added pitch stabilization. Also added is a gate/trigger booster so it can be used with modern synths, such as Eurorack modular, Arturia Mini/Microbrutes, Arturia Beatstep, etc. The gate/trigger booster has been normalized to the traditional input jacks such that when unplugged it uses the traditional ARP +15v triggers, when plugged in it can accept any trigger from +3v and up; thus making it compatible with virtually anything that outputs gate/cv. The case was professionally built by a kitchen cabinet company and is solid maple, stained black.

This unit is 75% the size of the original, measuring 25”w x 16.5” h x 8” d and weighing 28 lbs..."

Always dishing out the MTC is my trusty TR-707 which the TR-8 synced to effortlessly. This is a variation of the song played in real time, REMEMBER there are no DAWS, Computers or software synths EVER in my live performances. They have there place in my recording sessions but I love the freedom of expression that they just don't seem to provide in my applications."
