MATRIXSYNTH: 2011

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope it's a great one!

Putting this post up between the cross over as I need to sign off for the festivities!

First of all, I'd like to say THANK YOU! for a great 2011! It was a busy one here in MATRIXSYNTH land.  The site had a record breaking 18755 posts (including this one) for the year.  That's an average of 51.38 posts every single day (not a single day missed, BTW).  I'm hoping to actually bring that number down a little. Before anyone freaks out, I'm not planning on changing much.  I plan on keeping MATRIXSYNTH exactly the same with the exception of raising the bar on what goes up just a little.   I think enough change happens in life and it's nice to have some constants you can fall back on.  I'm hoping MATRIXSYNTH continues to be one for you.   It's odd to think it's only been six and a half years!  I hope to keep the site going for many more to come.   As for bringing the number of posts down and a little history on the site...

RIP Richard Lainhart & Mel Morley (midimel)

Duet in C - YouTube Uploaded by azimuthvisuals on May 20, 2010

"Music by Mel Morley and Richard Lainhart. Recorded at Pocono Skies electro-music festival, May 15, 2010. This improvised piece is part of a larger collaboration including Howard Moscovitz, Jeannie Allen, and Charles Shriner. Mel Morley plays keyboards and software synthesizers. Richard Lainhart plays Haken Continuum and Buchla modular synthesizer. Camera by Greg Waltzer and visuals by Hong Waltzer of Azimuth Visuals."

It is with tremendously sad news that I post the passing of both Richard Lainhart & Mel Morley this holiday season. My condolences go out to their families.

I recently met Richard Lainhart and his lovely wife in Bellingham for the Electronic Arts Festival. You can find a slideshow and video of his lecture with a performance of Oraisen on the Haken Continuum and Buchla 200e here. I believe my first post on Richard went up back in 2007. His work has been featured numerous times on the site. Just do a search on Lainhart on the right search box.  Google brings up 8900 results, but I'm guessing some are repeats.  Regardless, his presence on the site was massive.

Richard had a passion for not only music but for teaching as well. Many of his performances such as that at the Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival was a combination of performance and lecture. I only briefly communicated with him at Bellingham and via email, but felt akin to him.  He said he loved performing and travelling.  He was always grateful for his coverage on the site and once told me a story about how he ended up on a trip to Italy because of a post here on MATRIXSYNTH.  It was one of the biggest compliments I ever received on the site.  I will never forget that and I will never forget him.  Rest in peace Richard, you were one cool cat.  See his Facebook Page for messages. You can find his website at http://www.otownmedia.com/. Update: you can find a recent performance of Richard in New York on CatSynth here. I'm not sure if this was his last. via CatSynth in the comments below: "What a sad day! I knew Richard Lainhart from performing in New York over the past couple of years. It was only a couple of days ago that I posted the show we did where we did an improvised score to his film "History of the Future." His music and films were beautiful and he was a great person, and will be missed. :("

Update: I went up to Bellingham for the afternoon. It was a planned trip, but having briefly met Richard and his wife Caroline there gave it special meaning this time. A bit more reflective on the life of those I thought I'd eventually get to know better. In the Fairhaven district there is a little garden shop with artisan products. There is an outside section with a little rock gravel path that you can walk through. At one point in the walk something captured my attention. It took me a second and I realized it was a bunch of birds chirping away as if having a massive conversation. It made me think of Richard. On Twitter and Facebook he used to post about listening to birds outside his home. It always reminded me to slow down a little and just take the time to listen to the birds.

Mel Morley aka midimel was well known to many in the electronic music scene. You can find his website here: http://midimel.com. He once played keys for Flock of Seagulls, and was one of the few owners of the Performance Music Systems Syntar. George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular and Performance Music Systems knew him well. Mel, actually dropped by the NAMM booth in the early 80s when the Syntar was shown. He dropped by George's booth and gave the Syntar a spin. According to George he was quite proficient at it and someone walking by came up to talk to him. That person ended up being the contact that led him to playing for Flock of Seagulls.  George said he is really going to miss him.  He had some great conversations with him. I have only briefly communicated with Mel myself, but he like Richard was one cool cat. I wish I could have gotten to know him better.  You can find his Facebook Page with condolences here.

A separate MOTM-300 VCO controlled by each of the 4 rows of the 569 with the transposition controlled by row 1 of a Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer and Modcan 55B quantizer combo. Rows 2 and 3 of the Q960 feed into a COTK switch to feed CV control a MOTM-440 VCF that is processing the VCO's output through the Roland mixer's effects loop. Also feed by the effects loops are a COTK C1660 Phase Processor + Grove Audio PM Resonator and a Modcan 59B digital delay. The Moon 569, Q960 and 59B are all clocked by a Modcan 53B clock with reset sync on the 569 provided by step one trigger out of the Q960.

Thanks for watching. Look for some exciting video technique upgrades coming to my videos in 2012! Happy new year, all!"

Curious how many synths had protective panel sheets.

"The amazing SH-1, a far superior sound to the 101 in my opinion.

This synth is cosmetically very clean, just a little grubby, with only very minor wear. The protective seals are still on all but one of the knobs and there is the original clear plastic protective cover over the synth.

This synth has a pitch problem, it's very unstable sometime shifting up or down an out of tune octave it seems. Sometimes just a slight pitch wobble sometimes a major one so needs repairing."

Percussa Releases EVOLVOR for AudioCubes

"Mere (Belgium). December 30, 2011 - Today Percussa released a new application for the AudioCubes: EVOLVOR. This lightweight MIDI Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) generator is specifically designed for sound designers to link AudioCubes to LFOs.

EVOLVOR generates 4 LFO signals based on breakpoint functions that can be designed in the software itself. Due to the topology detection of the cubes, each AudioCube is automatically linked to an LFO. LFO signals can be added and removed, by adding and removing AudioCubes, as well as mixed and matched, by mixing and matching AudioCubes.

Using this one-on-one hardware user interface, fantastic new sounds are discovered without having to look at a laptop screen, and there is no need for lots of clicking and pointing to experiment and play with LFOs.

Availability

EVOLVOR can now be requested at

YouTube Uploaded by skoulaman on Dec 30, 2011

"A few days ago I made this 12 note based sequence track with the Doepfer Dark Time.
I used a 3 oscillator tone of the Waldorf Micro Q (two triangles and one sinus) in a very basic setting (and I think that is the power of a Waldorf because you can do very well basic synth tones as complicated pads for example) and a base tone of the Moog LP. During the track the sounds are tweaked. The solo came from the Korg DS-8, it is a preset with a long echo and with a pitch change in the end of the envelope. It is not one of my best tracks but just a tweak with my setup. Neverthelss enjoy listening.
The vid is made during my trip to my work (yes, on a very quit chrismas holiday day) on a highway round Amsterdam at 06:30 in the morning.

Stephen Hawking's Synth

Just saw this one on Boing Boing. Stephen Hawking is looking for a new technician. Sam Blackburn answered the following questions regarding Hawking's voice synthesizer:

"Stephen's voice is very distinctive, but you say there might be a problem retaining it?

'I guess the most interesting thing in my office is a little grey box, which contains the only copy we have of Stephen's hardware voice synthesizer. The card inside dates back to the 1980s and this particular one contains Stephen's voice. There's a processor on it which has a unique program that turns text into speech that sounds like Stephen's, and we have only two of these cards. The company that made them went bankrupt and nobody knows how it works any more. I am trying to reverse engineer it, which is quite tricky.'

Can't you update it with a new synthesizer?

'No. It has to sound exactly the same. The voice is one of the unique things that defines Stephen in my opinion. He could easily change to a voice that was clearer, perhaps more soothing to listen to – less robotic sounding – but it wouldn't be Stephen's voice any more.'"

And via Stephen Hawking on Wikipedia:

"The DECtalk DTC01 voice synthesiser he uses, which has an American English accent, is no longer being produced. Asked why he has still kept it after so many years, Hawking mentioned that he has not heard a voice he likes better and that he identifies with it. Hawking is said to be looking for a replacement since, aside from being obsolete, the synthesiser is both large and fragile by current standards. As of mid 2009, he was said to be using NeoSpeech's VoiceText speech synthesiser.[37]

In Hawking's many media appearances, he appears to speak fluently through his synthesiser, but in reality, it is a tedious drawn-out process. Hawking's setup uses a predictive text entry system, which requires only the first few characters in order to auto-complete the word, but as he is only able to use his cheek for data entry, constructing complete sentences takes time. His speeches are prepared in advance, but having a live conversation with him provides insight as to the complexity and work involved. During a TED Conference talk, it took him seven minutes to answer a question."

Also see Speech Synthesis on Wikipedia.

Note: I created a new Speech Synthesis label for this post. I realized I didn't have one and couldn't get myself to use the Speak n' Spell label. :)

[caknobs] RhythmProducer FR-15's instructions (with CMU-810 FaderBoard)

YouTube Uploaded by Caknobs on Dec 30, 2011

"ACE TONE(日本ハモンド)が1975年に発売したリズムボックス『RhythmProducer〔FR-15〕』を使って作ったシステムです。音声アウトをサンプリングして使うのではなく、FR-15本体をスタートさせることでシステムを同期させて動かしたいという狙いがあって構築したものです。音声アウト出力を3分割し、分割した音声アウトによってRoland SBX-80などをSyncさせています。
Today's main machine is "ACE TONE RhythmProducer〔FR-15〕". This RhythmBox was born in 1975. This time, I made the system, without sampling FR-15's sound.

Casio HZ-600 SD Synthesizer with Analog Filters

via this auction

"Casio HZ-600 Digital / Analog SD Synthesis "Pro" Version of HT-700 3000 6000. The HZ-600 was Casio's 'professional' version of the popular HT series of Spectrum Dynamic Syntheziers. There are no built-in speakers as found on the HT 'home' series and must be connected to an amplifier. You can split the keyboard with two different sound with 3 different splint points."

According to previous posts including video (one, two, three), this did have analog filters. It's interesting the CZ, FZ, and VZ series, which had more more editable synthesis parameters, did not.

Linn LM-2 LinnDrum Vintage Drum Machine

via this auction

"There are ZIFF sockets mounted for the snare and toms for quicker and safer removal / exhange of EPROMs (no additional EPROMs included). There seems to be an issue with the ride cymbal. It does not always trigger from the front panel (although cowbell and claps trigger properly when switched to "percussion"). When the ride is triggered, there is an audible "click" at the end of the sample. Perhaps this is an issue with the EPROMS and COULD be fixed by ordering a new Ride EPROM set from Forat. I don't know, just a guess..."
