Expressive E Touché & Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

Published on Jun 13, 2017 Ryan Gaston

"First test with the Expressive E Touché and Eurorack synthesizer. The Touché controls crossfading between pulsing/clicking sounds from the Make Noise DPO as well as the position, size, and density controls on the Mutable Instruments Clouds. And of course, a healthy helping of Pressure Points :)"

"Extremely rare outside of Japan, vintage Yamaha analog synth with classic tone, really fast envelopes, with TWO supersweet 12db multimode filters with lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and multiple routings that can be used at the same time, TWO Vcas (so you can mix multiple versions of some stuff), ring mod, post-vca sine wave, 3 envelopes, multiple lfo waveforms, and sooooo many modulation possibilities, a CS-15 on steroids.

A very strange synth that does things differently, and def can get sounds that nothing else can, but can also do standard vintage synth tones and do it well. Some really unusual routings in here, like you can send two vcos to filter 1, but then one of those vcos goes to another filter which can do that vco, or external audio, or hp of the other filter, and then both go to the same vca, but then you can send the second filter to a second vca that has a ring mod, and you can control which vca or the balance between them you hear on the overall output?! Not to mention you get 5 versions of 3 envelopes and 5 waveforms of one lfo and key tracking to modulate the filters, and the same minus keytracking for the ring. Bizarre and kinda cool, but then missing stuff on much simpler synths, like sync, or 2 osc vibrato. Lotsa cv connectivity options. But then there's a sine wave in vco 2 if you want to beef up your highpass filter sounds cause why not? And all 3 envelopes are slightly diff, and if you ever wondered what it would sound like to have a saw wave modulated by an inverted envelope modulate the pitch mod on just one ocsilator going through a ring mod modulated by a saw going in the opposite direction on that same lfo, with it all going through lowpass filters sloping in opposite directions but only the second one having s/h from the lfo, this is the synth.

In top notch cosmetic condition, really beautiful, and everything works and sounds as it should. Built like a tank. Comes with cover and legs, so it can be set up on its own without a stand, or just throw the legs in the cover and it's ready to travel in its own built in road case."

New Folktek Alter 1 and 2 Now on Indiegogo

Folktek's new Alter 1 and 2 are now on Indiegogo.

Details via the campaign:

"First; Yes, we just had a successful indiegogo campaign for the Folktek Mescaline and we're currently working to fulfill those orders (and it's going well and I think we're still on schedule!).

Second; Two reasons as to why we would have another campaign for a new Folktek release:

1. These cost a lot of money to make. By pre-ordering, you're helping us to pay for the manufacturing and production costs and we can give you a better deal for a limited time.

2. We can gauge interest and have an idea of how many to make. If there's interest in just 50 modules, why make 300? If we make only 50 and there's interest in 300, it takes us months longer to fulfill that interest because manufacturing and production takes basically the same amount time whether we create 50 or 500.

If you're unfamilar with Folktek, please see Folktek.com and find us on instagram and facebook.

This is a simple campaign and we're not force feeding it. If you like the modules, preorder now is cool - 2 weeks only at the limited price either here or on the folktek site. If you'd rather wait until they're out, please do."

"Calling this Pond is a bit of a stretch but it's what I thought of. It starts out really mellow, like a pond just as dusk is approaching, where you might here the odd bird but not much else. But as night moves in, things start to happen in a pond, all sorts of little creatures come out.

Unfiltered Audio Integrates with ROLI BLOCKS

Published on May 24, 2017

"Unfiltered Audio is the first plugin developer to fully embrace ROLI's Lightpad Block control surface, offering easy-to-use control for performance and production."

"Plugin Alliance announces promotion partnership with ROLI

'ROLI is a true innovator in our industry, so we were really excited to partner them up with arguably our most innovative Alliance member, Unfiltered Audio.'

- Plugin Alliance CEO Matt Ward, 2017

SANTA CRUZ, CA, USA: Plugin Alliance, a new ‘Über-standard’ supporting all major plugin formats and uniting some of the best-known international audio companies under one virtual roof, is proud to announce a promotion partnership with London-headquartered digital age music- making device creator ROLI — resting on Plugin Alliance partner Unfiltered Audio being the first plugin developer to fully embrace ROLI’s revolutionary Lightpad Block control surface with its recently released Instant Delay echo effects plugin powerhouse — as of June 5...

In a six-month promotion running from May 25 to November 25, Instant Delay (MSRP $49.00 USD) is free for ROLI BLOCKS product purchasers who will, upon registration, be issued with a voucher code for redemption at www.plugin-alliance.com. Plugin Alliance will also provide an upgrade path to all Instant Delay license holders to the latest (v1.1) update of Sandman Pro (MSRP $99.00 USD) — Plugin Alliance partner Unfiltered Audio’s undisputed ultimate delay, doubling as a transmogrifying time machine making serious sonic travelling more musically adventurous than ever, thanks to major performance improvements and some serious upgrades to an already killer feature set — for $29.00 USD during this creative promotion partnership.

As a driving force behind the partnership, Plugin Alliance CEO Matt Ward sees the cutting-edge companies concerned as a match made in heaven, revealing, “ROLI is a true innovator in our industry, so we were really excited to be able to partner them up with arguably our most innovative Alliance member, Unfiltered Audio. Neither company is satisfied with redoing what’s already been done; rather, they strive for new ways to create music and sounds. We can’t wait to see what the world’s creative community will come up with by combining BLOCKS and Instant Delay.”

Sentiments that are surely shared by ROLI Senior Director of Developer Products and Partnerships Jean-Baptiste Thiebaut: “We are delighted to partner with Plugin Alliance and Unfiltered Audio on the release of the new Instant Delay and updated Sandman Pro. Their integration with BLOCKS shows both the cutting-edge quality of their plugin designs as well as the exciting potential of BLOCKS as an open platform for app development.”

For his company’s not inconsiderable part in the proceedings, Unfiltered Audio’s Dr. Michael Hetrick clearly concurs: “When ROLI announced the Lightpad Block, we were blown away. The combination of portability and flexibility excited us so much that we reached out to ROLI with our design ideas. We think our performance-based modulation system demonstrates a future of plugins as real-time instruments — not just point-and-click studio tools. We cannot wait to hear what our users make with this creative combo!”

Instant Delay is free for ROLI BLOCKS users during the first six months after its May 25 release, during which time Plugin Alliance will also provide an upgrade path for all Instant Delay license holders to Sandman Pro for $29.00 USD."

Capacitive Touch Janko Keyboard for Moog Werkstatt

Published on Feb 13, 2017 Ben Bradley

"This is a Janko-layout touch keyboard I made at the 2017 Moog Hackathon at Georgia Tech, February 10-12. I'm playing a few classic bass and melody lines from popular and classic tunes. I only have one octave (13 notes) connected so far.

The capacitive touch sensors use MPR121 capacitive-touch chips, on breakout boards from Adafruit (Moog Hackathon sponsor Sparkfun makes a similar board for the same chip). The example code from Adafruit was modified to read four boards (using the Adafruit library and making four sensor objects and initializing each to one of the four I2C addresses is remarkably easy for anyone with moderate familiarity with C++), and code was written to send a gate (key down) signal to the Werkstatt, and to write a binary representation of the pressed key (low note priority) to an Arduino port connected to a precision R-2R ladder to generate the voltage for the VCO exponential input.

The capacitive touch sensors can be used to make a touch keyboard with any configuration, not just the Janko. With these sensors it's remarkably easy to make a functioning electronic musical keyboard, as no mechanical switches or moving parts are needed. The feeling is at least as responsive as a "real" keyboard, as response to touch and release feels instant as far as I can tell. If anything, there's a "problem" in that if you accidentally, even slightly, touch a key it will sound, whereas with a mechanical keyboard you have to "accidentally" press a key down for it to sound.

A traditional seven-natural-and-five-sharp-keys layout would have been just as easy, but less "interesting." I chose the Janko layout after having read about it for many years (see Paul Vandervoot's piano video "Demonstration of 4-Row Janko Keyboard" - he describes the layout at 4:06). The Janko has, from left to right, six whole steps per octave, thus is one less key wide per octave than the traditional keyboard, so with the same key spacings the Janko octave is a shorter distance. Going up or down diagonally is a half step, so a chromatic scale of all 12 notes is a zig-zag pattern. A major scale is the first three notes in a line (whole steps), diagonally up or down to the next key (a half step), this and the next three keys across (whole steps), and then diagonally again (a half step) to get to the octave key. You can start on any key and the major scale is the same description. This is the remarkable property of the Janko layout, there are very few patterns to memorize for the different scales and chords.
