Todd Barton Performance at Wayward Music 10/28/2017

Published on Oct 30, 2017 matrixsynth

You should all be familiar with Todd Barton over the years here on MATRIXSYNTH.

[Note: Todd has an upcoming performance coming up on Monday, November 13 at the Conservatory of Music at UOP, Stockton, California. That event will feature electronic instruments designed and built by Rob Hordijk. If you are in the area, you do not want to miss it.]

The above is the full performance by Todd Barton on the BEMI Buchla Music Easel at Wayward Music, announced here. Note the performance was in quad (four channels of spatial audio around the room), however, I was only able to capture it on my iPhone 6s, so unfortunately the quality is limited here. This video is meant more for historical purposes, but do enjoy it. It was an amazing performance.

You can find Todd Barton's website at http://toddbarton.com.

The following bio is from the Wayward Music event page http://www.waywardmusic.org/event/tod...

"Todd Barton is a composer, sound designer, multimedia performer, and analog synthesist specializing in Buchla, Serge and Hordijk modular systems. After four decades of exploration Barton is still delving deeply into the ever-expanding frontiers of musical expression: from his DNA derived Genome Music to his innovative scores for plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; from performances of Zen shakuhachi meditation music to avant-garde music for electronic synthesizers and computers; from performing with luminaries of jazz and poetry to lecturing on music and composition from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. He gives Skype lessons and consultations in analog synthesis worldwide and is currently a trainer for MacProVideo.com. Todd is fascinated and obsessed with exploring sound and its infinite manifestations. This performance will be a live improvisation which “Follows the Sound” of a Buchla Music Easel.

Jason E Anderson Performance at Wayward Music 10/28/2017

Published on Oct 30, 2017 matrixsynth

First 16:33 of Jason E Anderson's performance on a 5U modular at Wayward Music, Seattle, WA 10/28/2017. The system featured a rare 5U Cynthia Zeroscillator and modules from https://synthesizers.com. I was a member of the audience and decided to capture the performance with my iPhone 6s, so unfortunately the quality is limited. This video is meant more for historical purposes, but do enjoy it. It was a great performance.

You can find Jason's website at: http://jasoneanderson.net

The following bio is from the Wayward Music event page http://www.waywardmusic.org/event/todd-barton-guest-tba/

"Jason E Anderson is an artist from Seattle whose work includes performance, recorded works, video, installation, and music for dance. He creates sound using synthesis, acoustic recordings, programming and text. His work emerges from the traditions of experimental music and sound art. Anderson performs and records music under his own name, as Spare Death Icon, as LIMITS with Corrie Befort, and as a member of network computer music collective Mesh Collaborative . He is an active performer, and organizer/producer of performance events in the Pacific Northwest, and he publishes the recorded work of his contemporaries on his experimental music record labels Gift Tapes and DRAFT. Jason’s performance will employ the use of a computer running supercollider to generate events and sequences as control voltages that are sent to an analog synthesizer.

Quick demo of 2x PreenFM & 1x Ambika with 6 SMR4 voice cards. HQ Sound

Published on Oct 30, 2017 Todd Murray

"This is a nothing planned, adhoc session just to demonstrate the sound quality of these two DIY synth projects. Both synths are open source code, and open hardware. You can still obtain prebuilt PreenFMs or you can DIY and build the entire synth from scratch.

The Ambika is not longer made by Mutable Instruments. It too is Open source and open hardware, and there are some sources who still build them or you can DIY

In both cases you can build these synths yourself by downloading all of the CAD files for the circuit boards and case, sourcing their build, then source the components and assemble the circuits.... then download the software and install it.

If you want to build these yourself, and have experience you should have little issues as both are fairly straight forward and the build doc quite clear. The PreenFM may be a particular challenge if you choose to DIY the MCU board. Soldering a STM32F405 takes practice and a steady hand. In both cases you will also need to upload the firmware to the processors.

You can learn more about the Ambika

and the PreenFM here: http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/"

The sweep knob lets you adjust the graininess as well as the filtering of the over all sound.

Sweep can also be controlled via the 0 to 5V CV input.

Control over the velocity of the closed hat can be achieved via the 0 to 5V (CH Vel) input.

Further at the Portico Gallery, London Saturday 18th November

Published on Oct 30, 2017 the simonsound

"On the 18th November I'll be performing live at Further, an event dreamed up by DJ Food and Pete Williams. Every surface of the venue (Portico Gallery, London) will be covered in visuals as Sculpture (live tape loops and Zeotrope visuals) myself (live Buchla & Ciat Lombarde Cocoquantus) and DJ Food and Pete Williams conjure up strange textures, melodies and sound designs.

I'm sharing some footage of my preparation for the show and this is a little clip of one patch I'm working on. I don't do a lot of videos so please forgive the fact that most of the action takes place out of shot! What you can't see is the Ciat Lombarde Cocoquantus Looper/magic box, which I'm feeding from a Korg Monotron. The Buchla is providing the constantly shifting rhythmic elements.

Date : Saturday 18th November

Time: 7:30pm- midnight

Tickets – £7 (early bird price) £9 (Full price) Click the link below

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/furthe...

DJ Food & Pete Williams present the second of their irregular evenings at the Portico Gallery by creating a temporary audio visual space to enjoy. Films, slides, oil projections, food, drink and plenty of seating form the environment to soak up the sights and sounds of Further.

Programme:

7.30 – 8.30: Doors open, there will be a record stall with stock picked to compliment the evening by Micheal Johnson from the nearby Book & Record Bar and delicious food served alongside the fully licensed Portico bar stocked with local beers and ales.

8.30 – 9.15: Simon James – former Simonsound and Black Channels member and one of the foremost exponents in today’s modular electronics scene – plays a rare live set with his Buchla easel system.

10.00 – 10.45: Sculpture bring their incredible live show to West Norwood via Dan Hayhurst’s tape loops and electronics and Rueben Sutherlnd’s zoetrope turntable visuals

10.45 – 12.00: DJ Food & Pete Williams (Further) will open and close the evening with their multi-projection Light & Sound Designs."

From his early work with Mateo Murphy (Mutant Modular mm002) on Montreal-based label Hautec recordings, to releases on Richie Hawtin's M_nus imprint, France's Telegraph, Denmark's Tic Tac Toe and Germany's Contexterrior, Pheek has developed an unmistakable sound – textural and spatial with a cerebral, experimental soul, and at least one foot always on the dance floor."

Pulse wave and gate signals are being fed to the Wretch from the Knas Ekdahl Polygamist Synthesizer. The Polygamist is just out of frame and can't be heard but is acting as a dominatrix to the submissive Wretch, telling it what to do and running the show. BURG - severance (digitakt, analog four, modular, KORG ms-20, volca, blofeld)

Published on Oct 30, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

This is my first proper recorded jam using the Elektron digitakt. It is handling kickdrum, snare, reverse hh and the LOW bass + also sequencing the waldorf blofeld over MIDI.

Also introducing the Noise Engineering BIA, doing some percussion sequenced by the BSP.

This track was a bit of a struggle, trying to get so many new elements into place.. especially the digitakt, so I decided to take it slow and just do some minor things, and it feels like it went well.

The modular has a pretty complex patch, braids does the intro melody (FOLD), rings does some heavily modulated melodies, BIA does percussion and the morphagene does an extremely chopped up vocal sample + string pattern (layered) as a percussive thingy.... patched it through VCA, + maths controlling CV, and sequenced by the BSP .. good fun. :)

ms-20 does a one VCO lead sound + the el capistan delay, analog four adds some percussive sequencing, stabs + that it sequences the 0 coast over CV.

nord lead A1, stacked strings using the swell pedal to pull in some subtle fifths strings, VCF modulated by internal LFO's for some movements.

volca bass and keys, well, they do their stuff :)

Gear used: ms-20 mini, volca bass, keys, elektron digitakt, analog four, roland tr-8, yamaha reface CP, nord lead A1, waldorf blofeld, makenoise 0-coast

Modular rack: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...

FX, ms-70 CDR on volca keys and bass, el capistan on ms-20, bluesky, particle and CSIDMAN on reface, timeline and eventide on blofeld, EQD transmisser, space spiral, keeley caverns, RE_20 on modular.

hope you will enjoy it!

"This is a built kit of the Korg MS-20M monophonic synthesizer module. It is in virtually perfect playing and physical condition and includes the original patch cables, manuals and box. Does NOT include a SQ-10 sequencer.

This version is a module-only version of the original keyboard synthesizer made from 1978 to 1983. It is the same circuitry as the original with several important improvements.
- SYNC ON/OFF switch allows oscillator sync
- FM ON/OFF switch allows frequency modulation
- FILTER TYPE switch selects two filter types
- PWM IN jack allows pulse width modulation
- EG2 NORMAL OUT expands your sonic possibilities
- TRIG SW button is a convenient way to audition the sound
- Supports all CV/GATE specifications: Hz/V and V/Oct, S-Trig and V-Trig
- Three JUNCTION jacks
- MIDI IN connector and USB MIDI connector

The original MS-20 used two different VCF circuits depending on the date of production, and now you can choose either of these with a single switch. The earlier model (REV.1) has an aggressive character with distinctive distortion and self-oscillation, while the later model (REV.2) has minimal noise and a sweet, mellow sound."

"A version of the Halloween theme done using sounds and effects native to the OP-1. No user samples or external post processing what-so-ever. The stereo mix-down was dragged right from the OP-1 into Final Cut to make the video. This is a little one night ditty. Believe it or not the part of the song I was most stressed about getting right is the "click" that runs throughout, hence it was the thing I tackled first (turned out to be pretty easy with Hortax rim shot and the finger sequencer). Everything else is pretty self explanatory in the video. Enjoy, and Happy Halloween!"
