A Visit to Noisebug - Synth Store | Interview

Published on Jan 4, 2019 Under the Big Tree

"I had a day left for my Christmas vacation before having to go back to work, and decided to spend it visiting a store that I had wanted to see for a long time: Noisebug in Pomona, California. Blake, the general manager and I chatted for a long time about all manner of esoteric synths and recording equipment, and then he was kind enough to give us a tour of the space. The results are a deep dive into a retail store that specializes in the finest quality synthesizers, whether Eurorack, 5U, Buchla, desktop, or keyboard. This is a must-see interview for the devotees of truly esoteric electronic music devices.

Under the Big Tree is Nick Peck's YouTube channel, focused on music and sound design equipment and techniques, composition, production and performance of music, modular synthesizers and electronic music in general, and tabletop board games.

Some notes from watching the video: Elby Designs Pixie (EDP WASP synth - note Tinkerbell in place of a wasp) on the obscure front. BTW, Serge paperface refers to the original Serge panels from the 70s that had printed paper on the front panels. Radiohead used Analogue Systems. The power buss differs from Doepfer based eurorack. Ran out of label space with Moon Modular! 10 Year anniversary system featured. The Kilpatrick Audio K4815 Pattern Generator in Buchla format exclusive to Noisebug is featured.

Synthesizer & Sample Demo by Rik Marston
**Watch in HD** **Turn it UP!**

MIDI FILE FRIDAY
This is my favorite Gustav Holst work from "The Planets",
I used the Korg Kronos using the Reverb Roland Synth
Collection Sample Pack Jupiter-8 Juno-106 Samples.
The Behringer DeepMind 6 I used patch "Lost Verb" for
the deep analog space drone. There are some serious
pitch jumps, using samples in classic works can be very
tricky, so PLEASE CLASSICAL WIZARDS BE KIND. This is
a synthesizer adaptation AND WAS VERY HARD TO DO!
Anyways, it's the 2019 Blade Runner Dream Sequence Mix.
(Not really but it just turned 2019 & I'm a Sci-Fi geek!)
I love the combination of Roland Juno-106 & Jupiter-8
Samples, I used Juno-106 "106 Impact" & "JP8 Mode Brass"
Sweep sample is "JP8 Shriekback" for those 80's LUSH
Sweeps! ;) My FAVORITE!
Thank you for watching!"

Ensoniq Mirage Rack Version DMS-8 Hybrid Synth & Sampler w/ MASOS, OS 3.2

via this auction

"- Ensoniq Mirage DMS-8 Digital / Analog Hybrid Multi Sampler with OS & Format Disks -

This particular Mirage is in good condition for its age: The disk drive loads as expected, all buttons work, the display is bright, and MIDI is responsive. The original rack ears and a power cable will be included.

Also included are the following disks to get you up and running out of the box:
MASOS - advanced sampling operating system which adds a lot of highly useful functionality
OS V3.2 - the last basic operating system officially released
FMT V2 - a program which allows the Mirage to format fresh disks.

It's an often heard misconception that the Mirage is just a sampler, but there's actually a lot more to it - you can also approach it as a 16 oscillator, 8 voice polysynth with the classic "American" sound. There are few synths or samplers that approach the Mirage's warmth and character.

It features highly textured 8-bit sampling as your oscillator source (2 per voice), analog 24db / 4 Pole Curtis CEM low-pass filters, independent 5 stage VCA and filter envelopes with dynamic control via velocity, key sensitivity or key tracking.

Loading single cycle waveforms from other synths opens up a seemingly unlimited palette of sound design potential.

Of course it also excels on drum sampling duties - both single hits and loops are instantly given that authentic old school grit and punch that is often missing from more modern production tools."

Bob Moog Foundation - Moogtastic Synth Portrait of Bob Moog - New Years Card

Pictured is the art on a New Years card sent my way via The Bob Moog Foundation. Click on it to see the synths. :) P.S. The card is actually a bright white. Apologies for the poor lighting; my room isn't the brightest at the moment. You can find better pics over on the Bob Moog Foundation's site here.

The art is the Moogtastic mosaic featured on a T-Shirt and poster available at The Bob Moog Foundation shop.

The following are some details on the design:

"Our remarkable new Moogsaic design, so named for its portraiture of Bob Moog composed of over 250 hand-drawn synthesizers, modules, and sonic components, was created for the Bob Moog Foundation by illustrator and animator David C. Lovelace. From close-up, the image looks like an interesting collection of electronic instruments, but from just a few steps away, Bob's image and his intense gaze clearly appears.

The Gildan Ultra Cotton short-sleeved art tees are digitally printed to maintain the integrity of the design. They are available in sizes S-3XL.

The 11” x 17” poster is printed in Bob's home town of Asheville, NC on heavy poster stock. The poster features a unique archival image of Bob, as well as his signature, and is sure to be an inspirational focal point in your studio, home, office or classroom!

It features the following quote:

"I was never worried that synthesizers would replace musicians. First of all, you have to be a musician in order to make music with a synthesizer.""

"I had a real hankering for some Digitone action this evening, so I went ahead and got me some! The jam is 4 patterns (one for each section), but each pattern is only one bar long - they might seem longer because of a lot of conditional trigs. I worked that way because in my head I thought it'd be quicker - Jury is still out on that theory!"

Godwin Drummaker 45 Computer System

Published on Jan 4, 2019 Italian Vintage Stuff!

This is the first post to feature the Godwin Drummaker 45. You think you've seen it all, yet every year something new comes out of the annals of synth history. Be sure to check out the New Old label at the bottom of this post for more, and check out the Godwin Drummaker 32.

"The Godwin Drummaker 45 Computer System is an Italian Auto drum machine / Arpeggiator / Bass / Chord Arranger from 1976.

It was originally the rhythm section of the huge organ with the same name, but a few stand-alone units with a two octave keyboard controller were produced as well.

Very nice and warm analog sounds. It's quite complex, with many variations, less ompa-ompa compared to other similiar machines from that era.

Run through a Space Echo 301 with added chorus, echo and spring reverb."

Moffenzeef Stargazer & MSG II Drone Synthesizers

Published on Jan 4, 2019

"Moffenzeef has two standalone drone synthesizers, the full featured and gritty Stargazer which has a dual wavetable oscillator, sample rate reducer, dual resonant filters, three LFOs and distortion. We also used the smaller MSG II with Dwarfcraft Devices Hax 2 ring modulator pedal.

The Stargazer has 90 different waveforms letting you get a ton of different textures from the oscillators, it also has an expression pedal input to control the speed of the LFOs, in this video we used some Moffenzeef modules in a 4MS Pod case to control the LFOs.

The MSG II is smaller than the Stargazer, but has 8 different synthesis modes, so it can also produce many different sounds."

nonlinearcircuits SPASM - LDR controlled (!) chaos

Published on Jan 4, 2019 cirtcele

"This module takes the classic Sprott jerk circuit and replaces all the resistors with LDRs.....a 7 way vactrol."

"This module takes the classic Sprott jerk circuit and replaces all the resistors with LDRs.....a 7 way vactrol. This means the brightness of the LED in the giant vactrol controls the frequency of the circuit.

It is a very easy build and will give you a very flexible chaotic circuit. The CV inject jack allows you to control the chaos with gates and CV, some signals will cause it to pause or stall, others will make it glitch & freak out. CV freq controls the LED which, in turn, controls the resistance in the LDRs.

It is a very flexible build; you can use any LDRs you like, so long as they are the same. You can also use any capacitors you like for CAP, so long as they are the same.

Of course, the LDRs and capacitors you choose will affect the behaviour & frequency range of the circuit. GL5516 LDRs go to 500kΩ off resistance whereas GL5549 go to 10MΩ+ (anywhere from 10MΩ to 20MΩ), so will be a lot slower but will give a much wider frequency range and some very unpredictable outputs. Similarly with capacitors 10uF will be a lot slower than 10nF.

If going for the more extremely slow values, GL5549 LDRs and 10uF caps, the module will stall at minimum pot settings and generally needs a CV on the CV freq input to make it operate. This is actually a good thing as you can turn the signals on and off with CV or gates.

nonlinearcircuits GENiE 1 - GEneralized Nonlinear Extrapolator

Published on Jan 4, 2019

"This module is made of 3 neuron circuits and a difference rectifier."

"GEneralized Nonlinear Extrapolator

This module is made of 3 neuron circuits and a difference rectifier. The neuron outputs are fed to the switching pins of the next neuron’s attenuated input; 1>2, 2>3, 3>1. This means the circuit will work with a single input signal, delivering all kinds of mayhem at the outputs.

There are also 4 shared inputs so that the same signals can be fed to neurons 1&2 and neurons 2&3. The Difference Rectifier compares the outputs of neurons 1&3 to the output of neuron 2. If you want to use the neurons individually then turn down the input pots or use the upper neuron specific inputs to disconnect the signals coming from its neighbour.

Just like a set of synaptically connected neurons, this module is noisy and unruly. It is never going to learn anything it lives in and for the moment. It can be used to process audio, CV or audio and CV……do whatever you like to it.

The name is from the computer described in the 1964 Keith Laumer novel – The Great Time Machine Hoax, although this module differs in ability (can’t time travel or get married ….. afaik), the name is quite suitable.
