Optigan Panoptigon- Production Unit Pics

via Optigan.com

"Happy 2019, Optigoners!

We’re happy to announce that the PANOPTIGON – the new Optigan/Orchestron disc-playing hardware developed by our associate Robert Becker & his company Quilter Labs – will finally be available in an initial limited quantity production run of 25 units for US customers in 2019. (The initial run are not approved for Europe due to additional requirements that will be addressed on the next build.) Click on the thumbnails above to see the official flyer and photos of one of the first production units. We don’t have a release date yet, but it will be in the coming months. An official demo video will be ready soon, but in the meantime you can view a demo of the prototype unit from last year [posted here]

Quilter Labs will be showing the first two production units at NAMM this year, so if you’re attending, be sure to stop by their booth – number 4144 Hall D.

We’d like to encourage all of you to purchase the Panoptigon from this site (optigan.com) when it does become available. The Panoptigon was developed with Pea acting in an informal advisory role, but optigan.com will only be a dealer, rather than a partner, which means the only way we earn any cut is via sales commissions. In other words, if you hear about it from us, and decide to buy it based on our involvement/endorsement, but end up buying it direct from the factory, we will receive no commission. Either way, the price, delivery time, and service will be the same. MAP for the Panoptigon is $3999.

To this end, we will be offering an informal pre-sale for folks who are keen to reserve one of the initial batch of 25 units that will be offered for sale (10 of the initial run are already spoken for as of this posting date). Please send us an email if you’re interested in placing a pre-order, and we’ll get the ordering details to you as soon as we’re ready.

Along with the public launch of the Panoptigon, our entire back-catalog of discs will become more readily available on demand, so no more waiting around for bulk order deals as we’ve had to do in the past. The Panoptigon will play all vintage Optigan/Orchestron discs as well, but we’re also likely to remaster the vintage Optigan disc titles in order to add the strobe patterns that unlock additional features for discs that have them.

OK! That about covers it for now. See you at NAMM!"

Phase Distortion & Frequency Modulation Synth Jam

Published on Jan 18, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"All of the Sounds in this video are made with either Phase Distortion or Frequency Modulation digital synthesizers, read this article on our website for more information about these types of synthesis https://www.perfectcircuit.com/articl.... The Casio CZ-101 is a phase distortion synthesizer that produces sounds similar to those produced by analog subtractive synthesis. The Elektron Digitone is an frequency modulation or FM synthesizer that also has subtractive filters. The Volca FM has the same synthesis as the Yamaha DX-7, which is FM that is implemented with phase modulation.

The Digitone is used to sequence everything, a Korg Volca Mix mixes everything together. The CZ-101 goes through a Walrus Audio Julia chorus pedal and the Volca FM is going through the Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master V3 delay and reverb pedal."

Coffeeshopped Releases Patch Blocks iPad Editor for the Yamaha DX200

Patch Block on iTunes

The great thing about this editor, aside from having all the editable parameters in front of you, is the graphical representation of things like the algorithms and envelopes. You can see the operator routing of each algorithm and you can see what you are editing on the envelopes which are a bit reverse of what you would expect on your standard analog synth - increasing the rate lowers the attack time, while increasing lengthens it.

via Coffeeshopped:

"About a year ago, the venerable Elektron released their Digitone: an FM synth box with a sequencer, promising to make the elusive methods of frequency modulation into a more hands-on experience. Well, 17 years earlier, Yamaha tried a similar thing: the DX200. And about a month ago, a kind and generous man named Calvin met with me on a chilly night in the parking lot of a Walgreen's Pharmacy in Austin to loan me his DX200 (pictured here). And so, today, I bring you Patch Base 3.4 and the Yamaha DX200 Editor and Librarian. Let me tell you a bit about the new editor, and the DX200 itself.

"The Folktek Conduit is a symbiotic touch-based drone synthesizer based on a delay which then travels to a filter. Creating swells of oscillation that can delve into eternal noisy feedback territory as one desires. Connect to a sequencer to control the time/pitch and pull forth some powerful synthesis. The touch panel is also a CV keyboard, generating 0-5v in .5v increments.

Discontinued and Rare. Comes with Original Folktek Booklet, and Power Adapter.

Local Pick Up. No Returns.

Features:
Touch pads; 8 polyphonic notes + noise + pitch: all sensitive to touch. These are synchronous with the delay, meaning delay time = oscillator pitch. All notes are tuned with one another so the pitch is a master control.
Oscillation and/or incoming audio sent through on-board filter: for further manipulation.

Mixing hardware synthesizers and effects pedals with the WMD Performance Mixer

Published on Jan 18, 2019 WMDevices

"What is the best mixer for live hardware based electronic music performances? Do I need preamps if I am only using synthesizers and drum machines? Can I use the WMD Performance Mixer with synths instead of eurorack modules? Do I need to have Eurorack modules to use the WMD Performance Mixer?

If you are asking yourself these questions, take a few minutes and check out this video!

The WMD Performance Mixer is an 8 channel Mixer for the Eurorack modular synthesizer format. It includes two auxiliary sends, a master insert section, six Mono channels and two true stereo channels. In addition to being the end all solution to mixing audio in the eurorack system, it works wonderfully with hardware instruments such as synthesizers and guitar pedals.

In this video Alex answers the question above and works through mixing four different hardware sound sources, the Roland TR-8 and JU-06, the Arturia Microbrute, as well as a vocal channel using two guitar effects pedals to create an interesting loop of sonic textures.

Alex also uses both auxiliary send and return channels with guitar pedals for external effects. The Zoom MS-70CDR and the WMD Geiger Counter help fill out the mix and make the sound more unique with some pretty traditional sound sources.

808s, 909s, Juno 106, Polysix, they all work awesome with the Performance Mixer.

The Performance Mixer is great for mixing both Eurorack and Non-Eurorack signals together so you can use what you have currently to make the music you love."

If you are interested in building this module as a DIY kit rather than purchasing it pre-built, then this is the video for you. We go through the entire build process, discussing soldering techniques, showing general tips and tricks, as well as aspects of this specific module. We get into testing the module, using oscilloscopes, function generators, and bench power supplies, and even what to do when something goes wrong.

Lifeforms Primary Oscillator-Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers sound demo

"Hi Folks.
I have a new movie from Primary Oscillator from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers.
This time it's the quieter side of this oscillator with the sequencer used to pick up and lower the melodies.
The amazing structure allows you to get very harmonic sounds, also timbre are important for sound, it allows you to discover a new music region using Fragments, Timbre, Shape or a special function called Blade. Incredible effects especially on low key tones. With this VCO, they become very organic and rounded by using these functions. Check it out yourself, for me it's a great, very powerful VCO for new sounds."

"Korg Z1 in excellent condition. Everything is fully functional EXCEPT FOR ITS *MOSTLY FUNCTIONAL* X-Y pad used to manually modulate the sound during performance (the pad to the left of the keyboard.) This X-Y pad has lost much of its sensitivity in the upper left quadrant. However, its other 3 quadrants work very well, so it is still highly usable, and the modulation wheel and the pitch bend wheel work perfectly."

MFOS WP-20 Experimental Analog Synthesizer & 8 Step CV/Gate Sequencer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

See this post for a demo of one in a different case.

"WP-20 experimental analog synthesizer which also comes with a 8 step CV/Gate sequencer, along with N.American power supplies and two 1/8" cables for connecting the CV and Gate input/outputs together. Please check out the pictures of this unit as it has a very unique hand made look. The cases are aluminum with hand stamped labeling.

This is one wild unit, capable of much more than its humble specs indicate. It really shines in wild FM sounds, but can also play nice warm analog tones as well. But please be aware, if you are looking for a traditional synthesizer - keep looking! There is no MIDI and its VCO does not scale to V/Oct. Although it is certainly will play nice melodies using the 8 step sequencer you should not buy this thinking you are getting a Novation Bass Station, this is an 'experimental' synthesizer instead.

- VCO with square and triangle
- A VCF with resonance switchable
- VCA
- Loopable A/R generator with a manual trigger button (can get into audio range in loop mode)
- LFO with saw/triangle and square waves (which can also get into audio range).

There are 1/8" inputs for CV (pitch) and Gate (to trigger A/R).

The 8 Step sequencer has, you guessed it - 8 steps. But you can switch between 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 steps via the "steps" knob. 1/8" outputs for CV and Gate as well as a 1/8" input for external clocks (but note - some of the clocks from my modular would trigger the WP-20, and others would not).

If you would like to hear some of what this machine is capable of, I recorded a 10 minute track using the WP-20 as the sole sound source along with the 8 track sequencer (I also ran the WP-20 through some effects pedals, including a Cimmerian Caves and a home made spring reverb - plus some VST effects). Listen Here:

https://soundcloud.com/artificial-noise/wp-20-sessions

It is an odd unit, certainly not perfect - but if you use its for its strengths (and not focus on its limitations) you can create some very interesting sounds. Lo-fi, warbly and weird is how I would describe it."

"1982 Realistic Concertmate MG-1 analog synthesizer. This synth was manufactured by Moog Music and sold at Radio Shack in the early 80s and is one of the coolest little synths I’ve had on my bench. Not only does it have that classic Moog dual-oscillator monosynth sound, but there is also a nifty polyphonic function consisting of a divide down circuit letting the user play the synth polyphonically.

This synth has had a full service - every slider has been cleaned or replaced if needed, one of the MM5823N divider chips was replaced, a 2n3906 transistor was replaced in the first oscillator. Also, the synth received a full recap using high quality Nichicon electrolytic capacitors. I performed a couple standard mods and changed the RCA out to a normal 1/4” jack along with increasing the overall output volume. The nasty ass foam protecting the sliders has been cleaned off and replaced, along with new knobs and slider caps. All keys were removed and polished. This synth looks lovely and will sound beautiful for years to come. Cosmetically speaking, it looks pretty good overall and has a few cracks in the overlay, also a few flecks of what seems to be white paint. Other than that, it’s quite pretty for a synth this age. $650."

Red Dragon Morphing Filter Demo

Published on Jan 18, 2019 Hexinverter Électronique

"The Red Dragon is a Polivoks filter in its basic topology but it is far from a clone. Unlike any other filter of this type, it is 4-pole, with a unique CV control to morph between the 6db/octave and 24db/octave filter responses. This, along with cv inputs for resonance, 2 cv inputs for filter cutoff, and attenuverters on all of them, makes for a filter you can modulate to the moon and back!

This demo shows off the modulation possibilities to full effect. Fed with a simple square wave from the Klavis Twin-waves, accompanied by the Mutant Bass Drum and Hihats. All outputs go into the Mutant Hot Glue, with the makenoise Erbe-Verbe on the send/return channel.

The LED indicates the morphing - blue is the 6db/octave slope, red the 24db/octave slope."

Here we have a Furthrrrr generator with a classic gold panel which we will convert by replacing the black panel.

1. The first step is to take off the all the knobs from the pots.
You can use different tools like pliers or tweezers.
I am putting the tweezers between the plastic knob and the nut and press lightly to avoid scratches.
Sometimes the knobs are not so easy to remove so be patient and do it gently.

Korg DW-8000 | A spectacular hybrid synth | 64 new patches download

Published on Jan 18, 2019 Espen Kraft

"Audio demo of patches start at 04:20

Over the years I've come to rely on the Korg DW-8000 as one of my secret weapons. It's gone under the radar of many, especially since it was pretty much neglected back in the day as it fell between the digital revolution of the Yamaha DX7 and the Roland D50 at the time.
The Korg DW-8000 should really cost as much used today as the Sequential VS, as it's so good at creating that hybrid PPG-like sounds. It can blend a totally analog sounding saw with a complex bell waveform into a truly amazing new sound.

The patches I present in this demo is about half of the total pack and it's all usable sounds for any producer. Pads, strings, bells, bass and synth sounds.
Some external effects are used in the demo to enhance the feel.
