Four Months In - Return to New York

boxoftextures

"Is it a travel video? Or is it a rail fan video? Or even, is it a music video? Nobody knows. Overcast day for an Amtrak train from Boston to New York, basically the entire view of the Manhattan skyline as we go from the Bronx through Queens and then into the tunnel to Manhattan.

Music details: Arturia V Collection synths, but most sounds are from Pigments, one of my favorite soft synths. All sounds are original patches I made for this tune. In fact, our motto is:

Box of Textures: never* sullying your ears with a preset

Recorded into Logic Pro X on a 16-inch, 2019 MacBook Pro using their new Live Loops feature, because that's how I've preferred to work ever since I got Digital Performer seemingly a thousand years ago.

I like making these travel videos and their accompanying soundtracks. Apparently though it seems I only travel from right to left. I'll try to work on that for the next one but to be fair it's only the second one of these I've done recently.

You can find me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/selgart
I also have a Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/boxoftextures

As always, headphones recommended."

"I bought this synth around 1997 in working condition with the Syntech midi interface. It worked for a year or so and then suddenly during a session it stopped functioning.I had lots of synthesizers so I just took it out of the lineup and put it in the corner of my studio where it stood until week ago.I didn't get online until around 1999 so I researched the problem I might have encountered. It seems the power supply was this synth's main Achilles heel.I've watched a couple of youtube videos and the power supply wasn't producing enough power on each rail to support everything functioning. My machine turns on and there is a rapid fire clicking like an old computer printer.I learned this is the tapper solenoid (which is used to add tactile feedback to the membrane switches)."

"No fret, I'll get one back when the time comes again..in any case, this is Prophet 5 you want. This synthesizer has been well loved, and routinely serviced by the Wizard of the P5, Greg Montalbano at Analog Synth Service in Oakland, CA.

The Awesome:
- 120 factory presets (sysex files from Greg available for buyer).
- later model Serial # 5899, stable and reliable.
- Greg recently serviced the synth 07/2020
Greg updated the synth with the following:
- Latest 10.5 MIDI implementation
- Power supply has new transformer for less heat and lower noise.
- All keyboard j-wire & contacts thoroughly cleaned and adjusted where necessary.
- Tuned and Scaled.
- All switches and knobs have been cleaned and tested.
- Completely recapped.
- Very clean P5 inside and out.
- Comes with Anvil style hardcase for safe transport. (Will not ship)

The action is butter and the sound is what you'd expect and much more.

The Bad (but not really):
No bad issues here, all cosmetic and does not affect functionality whatsoever.
- A few key caps have minor cracks, could be replaced or not, fine as is - see pics
- Decay and Resonance knobs have scuffs, perfectly fine as is - see pics
- Slight crack in the walnut from over tightening the screw on one side panel (happened before me). Perfectly solid as is - see pics
- The keyboard is older, so there are a few squirrels in the keys.

Greg adjusted all keys and gave a clean bill of health. Assures it's good."

Chris Meyer | Learning Modular's Ghost Beats Presentation for the Colorado Modular Synth Fest 2020

Learning Modular

"For those who are curious, here is a slightly higher quality recording of the 'ghost beats' presentation I did for the 2020 Colorado Modular Synth Fest (CMSF). The basic technique is taking two rhythm patterns - one that is the skeletal framework you want to always hear, and one with beats appearing and disappearing using a probability skipper - and using a logic module to blend them together."

Sequential Artist Spotlight Interview with CHASE BAIRD

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"Part experimental rocker, part classical romantic, and part hard-bop devotee, saxophonist, and composer, Chase Baird has been described as “… the future of jazz music and the saxophone” by Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Randy Brecker.

His latest album, A Life Between, covers a vast emotional terrain with a band comprised of modern jazz’s most revered innovators. Grammy-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez and five-time Grammy-nominated pianist Brad Mehldau are veteran companions alongside new-generation talents Nir Felder on guitar, and Dan Chmielinski on bass. Critics have declared the album “…a truly inspired, dare we say, epic recording complete with progressive singularities and sonic cosmicalities.” A complete bio for Chase Baird can be found here.

We chatted with Chase on how he uses the Prophet ’08 in his music"

Nonlinear Labs C15 - Major Software Update Released

Nonlinear Labs C15 - New Features - Update 2020

via Nonlinear Labs

"The C15 received the most significant software update since its release.

It's an update of the operating system, the synth engine and the user interface. It includes layer, split and mono modes, more voices, and more macro controls and modulation targets.

Get an impression of the new features in this video.

Get a detailed list of all the improvements here.

This update continues the constant evolution of the C15 since its launch three years ago. It expands its range and quality of sounds and improves his playability and suitability for musical performance. The update is accompanied by around 200 new presets making use of the new features.

The new software is a complete rewrite. Based on the new architecture, future developments will be easier and will also benefit from new opportunities. The synth engine and the user interface now both run on Linux.

The update is free for all C15 users, who will also benefit from the interchangeable magnetic foils, as the new version comes with updated overlays reflecting the new features.

As of now all new instruments will be shipped with the new system and we will contact all users in the coming weeks to perform the update with them. Early models of the C15 will be brought to Berlin to update the hardware in order to install the new software."

Prophet Rev 2 - Synthesizer Jam

Kamilotomusic

"Prophet Rev2 Sunday Jam! 🎹
Usually I start these jams with a chord progression but this time I decided to lay down some drums first. Added 808's with Kontakt and some pads with the Omnisphere, CS80 and ARP2600 plugins. The Prophet Rev2 patch brings it all together and I had some fun with the LFO! The zoom shot was made possible by my lovely girlfriend 😊
Hope you have a great Sunday 💙"

"Roland SH-1000 synthesizer. Vintage Analogue Synth.
Serial number 568919 which (according to various sources I've found online) means it was built in March 1977.
Monophonic, Monotimbral, proper REAL ANALOGUE synthesizer, make your own sounds!

As you might expect from a unit of this age it does show some battle scars but there are no structural problems to the chassis or cracks etc. and the sound is still delightfully analogue and crisp.
The only functional damage is to one of the front flapper switches. The "Tuba" switch has snapped off (lost in the mists of time) but the actual switch is still functional and still works if you push it with your finger. It's the outer part of the switch that is missing. You could either replace it or stick something thin in the little hole to use as a switch extension. Also, there is a small piece of plastic missing to the top of the 'pitch' and 'volume' knobs. This makes no difference at all, it's barely even noticeable..."

SoundForce SAMPLES // 6x 808 drum sounds in a 4HP Eurorack module

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the Eurorack module SAMPLES from SoundForce which is a sample player with 6 voices. You have a simple trigger in and sound output for 6 one shot drum samples taken from a Roland TR-808 drum machine. Claves, Rimshot, Maracas, Handclap Cowbell and Closed Hi Hat sounds allow you to flesh out your modular drum simple with additional 808 drum sounds that also take well to further processing and mangling as we’ll explore in this video. Bit crushing, AM, filtering and modulated FX chains help bring the sounds to life as well as audio triggering for creating “drum drones”. Skip around with the timing index below and check out the other linked demos too.

*** PLEASE NOTE - the audio samples are baked-in and cannot be changed

50 Dollar Vintage Drum Machine - Zoom Micro Rhythm Trak MRT-3 - is it worth it?

Expanding Sound

"I see these Zoom MRT-3 Drum machines going for 50 bucks up to about 100 or so. I got my hands on one, I wanted to see if the samples are any good. My thought process for every electronic instrument is simple, I'll enjoy it if it sounds good, and it's fun to use. Sometimes a synth or drum machine will sound great but is such a pain to be creative with that I just get annoyed and want to use something else. This little zoom unit sounds decent for the money and was very easy to program. Mine was picked up second hand, so I had no manual, but it didn't stop me from being able to make patterns 5 minutes after turning it on. If you're looking for a cheap drum machine, this isn't a bad choice at all."

More cowbell ambient

With actual cow bells. Apparently we have a cow label. It's been a while and only two previous posts, but there you have it. This appears to be the first post with actual, real life, cows.
