Battle of the Sequential (and DSI) Prophets | From VCO (P10) to DCO (P08) to DSP (P12) ambient pads

video upload by MIDERA

"A friend of mine suggested 'why not compare your Prophets?' And I thought that was an interesting idea. So I sat down with my Prophet 10 and started recording. Only... I didn't actually record the audio. I recorded about 10 minutes of video and looked over and never hit record in my DAW. I should have kept it in the video, the biggest sigh as I put my hand over my face and said 'You've got to be kidding me.' It sounded so good too.

So, I went through the process again. I recorded the Prophet 10. Then I decided to record something similar with the Prophet 08. Then I decided to record something similar with the Prophet 12. All three synths I tried to record something similar, and go through similar sound processes. The end sounds weren't identical, but the process was as similar as I could make it. Everything is recorded mono out into the Strymon El Cap to be equivalent in this regard. The P08 and P12 obviously would have advantages in a stereo playing field.

What's my take on the comparison? The Prophet 10 is just a joy to use. Absolutely brilliant synth to play. At no point did I need to access menus or set, in a difficult way, modulation sources/destinations. They're already preconfigured and give you such a wide range of sounds. I surprisingly found the Prophet 12 to be the most difficult to work with, despite it's excellent UI. But you can't really use the UI to its full potential when you need to use both hands to change things (or what I mean is, if you want the great UI to work, you need both hands so that you can hold a source and twist a knob).

I won't argue that the Prophet 12 is better for some things than what the Prophet 10 or 08, because it's a hybrid synth and has a lot of other waveshapes and people don't always desire making 'analog sounds' whatever that means. From what I understand, some folks prefer to make sounds without even using the filter (or leaving it wide open), and with the P12, you can do that more easily.

Either way, the Prophet 10 to me was the winner here, it might not be the best sounding (although I do think it is), but it provided the most enjoyable experience."

ASM Hydrasynth - Experimental Generative Plucks

video upload by Scott McAuley Sounds & Synthesis

"Diving into the generative side of the Hydrasynth and loving it, this patch utilises the arp in a very slow tempo, then LFO 5 as step sequencer, generating random pitch changes to Osc 4, LFO 5 also triggers Envelope 5, which triggers the filter cutoff.

Various other LFO's and Looped Envelopes to add changes to the filter envelope decay and release times, also to randomly change the time signature of the arp (hence the deliberate drifting out of sync then drifting back in again) it's an addictive type of synthesis and one that really brings some happy/lucky finds.

Pad is OB6 through some bigsky, Piano Is Keyscape, drums are various samples put together for quick video.

I will do some tutorials on this once I have become more adapt at it :)

Enjoy

"Vintage Sequential Six-Track poly-synth. Tested in good working condition shows average wear and tear but fully functional otherwise.

Six voice, polyphonic synthesizer similar to a Juno but it can function as a 6 monophonic, multi-timbral voices as well! The interface on this is...less than exciting, especially when comparing it to the Prophet 5. But that doesn't mean its impossible, or even difficult to program. And with Dave Smith (RIP) being one of the fathers of MIDI, you can control pretty much any parameter with CC messages!"

Introducing Octopulse MaxforLive Device for Ableton Live by Manifest Audio

video upload by Isotonik Studios

Learn - Octopulse MaxforLive Device for Ableton Live by Manifest Audio

"Did you know the otherworldly octopus has a uniquely distributed neural system? Its central brain is connected to brains in each of its eight arms: nine brains total.

Inspired by this unique lifeform, Octopulse is designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred to combine eight individually adjustable pulse generators with global controls that manipulate them in unison — while retaining distinct characteristics, directions, and behaviours.

Each activated pulse “arm” is driven by its own clock, defined by a base musical rate and multiplier, along with controllable length, at a specified MIDI note. Trigger, octave, and velocity can all be randomized to add a wealth of variation. Note values, base rates, and rate multipliers for all arms can be randomized globally, within set ranges; click the global dice to instantly produce a unique starting point. Velocity, duration, and multiplier can be controlled for all steps simultaneously, as well as trigger, octave, hold, and velocity randomization.

Advanced mode provides access to pulse divisions for polyrhythmic tuplet timing independently for each pulse, Euclidean sequencing, individual loop reset in bars, and discrete offset delay, with locks to exempt certain parameters from global control or randomization. Euclidean fills can be set per pulse, and controlled globally via uniquely proportional percentage slider. Pulse divisions can also be set globally for all unlocked pulses.

Outgoing MIDI can be transposed via incoming MIDI clips or real-time input for uniquely interactive musical results — all of which conforms to a selected scale and key. An optional cycle reset interval constrains otherwise endlessly sprawling polymetric structures to more predictable bar-length patterns, while a base offset and multiplier can stagger the entire pattern offbeat.

Four playback modes allow it to interact with other MIDI elements in a project — or be deployed as an unconventional, retriggering arpeggiator. Optimized for Push with full Info View annotations and bundled Global Hub integration, Octopulse provides a fresh approach to probabilistic polyrhythms. Whether generating unique drum patterns or expansive melodic patterns, Octopulse is applied biomimicry in action.

Waldorf Releases The Blue Journey Soundest by synth_nyc

You can find additional demos at SYNTH_NYC and SoundCloud. You can find the soundset on Waldorf's site here.

"The Blue Journey 128 sound set for the M synthesizer explores the technology from the past that made PPG and Waldorf Music machines historical landmarks. It highlights firmware version 1.07 and 1.08 that brought a slew of functionally to the M; almost giving it new synthesizer engines without sacrificing user experience!

The first 32 [1-32] patches are using MW1 mode only with PPG Transitions (short 22kHz / 16bit mono samples) exclusively; PPG Transitions reading feature was introduced in firmware version 1.07. Those patches have the Transition number + Slot number in the M Patch Name, so it’s easy to rebuild (e.g. T143 S3 Low Rez Vox is the patch name of patch number 1 on the M, using PPG Transition T143 in M Slot 3).

The required samples are from the original PPG library and have already been renamed for use in the M. A detailed overview and instructions for loading the samples into there M are available in the downloads after purchase.

https://www.hermannseib.com/english/synths/ppg/wtbwave.htm#sorted

http://ppg.synth.net/waveterm/wt_lib.shtml

The next 32 [33-64] patches are exploring MW2 mode new features: new digital filters were introduced in firmware version 1.08.

Those patches have the M digital filter type in the M Patch Name (and in the file name on synth_nyc website and bandcamp) (e.g. B Stop Marbles is the patch name of patch number 36 on the M, using the B Stop filter), so it’s easy to know which filter was used and showcasing the M firmware 1.08 capability.

The last 64 [65-128] patches are a mix of MW1 and MW2 modes but not using any Transitions.

In The Blue Journey sound set, you will find many vocal textures, vocal plucks, vocal basses and vocal pads because this is probably where the M excels; where it’s ‘magic’ and uniqueness are more present. There are also many other leads, basses, and even VA patches; and of course many wavetable scanning patches, that can make it to any retro or modern production.

I hope you’ll enjoy The Blue Journey, as much as I enjoyed programming the patches."

Cherry Audio Introduces Harmonia - New and Original Wavesequencer & Vector Based Virtual Instrument

video upload by Cherry Audio

Introduction to Harmonia - Oscillator Basics | Cherry Audio

"Synth designer Mitchell Sigman of Cherry Audio introduces HARMONIA, a new and original virtual instrument designed to effortlessly create rich, evolving polyphonic sounds often associated with vector and wavesequencer synthesizers of the 80s and 90s.

In this tutorial video, Mitchell details the unique oscillators at heart of Harmonia. Using techniques similar to those found in additive synthesis, each Harmonia oscillator can simultaneously produce up to eight pitches, individually tuned to a harmonic series or semitones. Using modulation, producers can effortlessly create unique morphed and sequencer-like tones by varying the combinations of waveform selection and harmonic presets.

Harmonia is available at https://cherryaudio.com and authorized resellers worldwide for $49 (MSRP $69)"

Harmonia is the latest innovation in virtual synthesizers from Cherry Audio, following on from their acclaimed original instruments, Dreamsynth and Sines. We designed Harmonia to create rich, evolving polyphonic sounds like those associated with vector and wave sequencing synthesizers of the 80s and 90s, but through a more effortless and visual technique.

The magic behind Harmonia lies in its two sample-based oscillators. Using techniques similar to those found in additive synthesis, each Harmonia oscillator can simultaneously produce up to eight pitches, individually tuned to a harmonic series or semitones. The volume for each pitch harmonic can be fixed or dynamic, and Harmonia’s unique interpolated harmonic scanning enables dramatic sweeps and melodious sequences through a single modulatable slider.

Harmonia derives its distinctive organic sound from hundreds of sampled waveforms recorded from various synthesizers, traditional instruments and voices, colorful “lo-fi” sounds, and more. User samples can be imported, further expanding Harmonia’s tonal palette. Producers can effortlessly create unique morphed and sequencer-like tones by varying the combinations of waveform selection and harmonic presets.

Harmonia reaches new heights by providing four syncable polyphonic LFOs, an expansive stereo multimode filter, click-and-drag envelopes, and a massive mod matrix with eight slots for dozens of sources and destinations. Harmonia includes support for aftertouch, flexible MIDI mapping, and a collection of over 350 breathtaking, professionally designed presets. Harmonia also has 17 studio-quality effects such as distortion, chorus, phaser, echoes, reverbs, and more - all fully modulatable through the matrix.

New Herbs and Stones Legs - eurorack kick drum and percussion module

video upload by Gianluca Herbertson

"Legs is an analog kick drum and percussion synthesizer module in eurorack format.

From rumbling low end basses to distorted warehouse window-breakers, Legs can synthesize it all!

https://herbs---stones.com/"

Legs is an analog kick and percussion synthesizer module in eurorack format.

It is based around a triangle core voltage controlled oscillator and a two levels voltage controlled saturation stage.

Each parameter has its own dedicated CV input, when a control signal is patched into any of the inputs its corresponding knob will act as a CV attenuator.

Two independent gate/trigger input with level control can be used to create accents, pattern changes and generally work on track dynamic.

Each of those inputs has its own trigger conditioner circuit so it can accept different types of signals, not necessarily rectangular waves or short triggers (its threshold is set at +2.5V).

The CV inputs expect voltages in the 0-5V range (a negative voltage won’t damage the unit and won’t affect the sound).

From rumbling low end basses to distorted warehouse window-breakers, Legs can synthesize it all.

Analogue Solutions Colossus Quartz Expander AS250-VCO

video upload by Analogue Solutions

"AS250-VCO This has a bank of 12 vernier VCOs, plus 2 Noise Generators, Random Voltage, Sample and Hold, Matrix Panel.

What is Colossus Quartz?

Tom Carpenter is excited to introduce Colossus Quartz, an exciting new range of add-on synth expanders, part of the Colossus range.

Colossus Quartz is the Colossus Slim split into quarters. This allows you to build the whole system one quarter at a time, spreading the cost, or just having single sections to use as expanders alongside your existing modular synthesizers.

Several benefits:

It enables you to buy one quarter at a time, so you can spread the cost eventually building up a complete Colossus System.

They can be used as expanders for Colossus.

And they can be used as expanders and used with other modular set-ups (Eurorack, 5U, etc)."
