Live Ambient :: Soma Cosmos :: Oberheim OB-X8 :: Roland JX-8P :: Linnstrument

video upload by Harry van Mierloo

"Layered ambient recording of the Oberheim OB-X8 playing together with the Roland JX-8P, through the wonderful Soma Cosmos.

The JX-8P is playing one of my favourite homemade pad-patches, and the OB-X8 is live played on the Linnstrument and tweaked in order to feed various sounds on the fly into the Cosmos. The filter of the Oberheim is controlled with my foot using an expression pedal. The result is a highly layered ambient track full of unpredictable – and sometimes hard to keep within control – harmonics.

Pepper & Salt from Strymon BigSky, enjoy!"

This Is A Great Mono Synth To Pair With Your Sampler

video upload by EZBOT

"In today's episode we are pairing the Novation Bass Station II with the Elektron Digigatk II and Digitone II. One for sampling it and one for sequencing it. The Novation Bass Station is one of the simplest and most satisfying mono synths I've used, I highly recommend it as a first synth, no doubt.

Melbourne Instruments NINA Multi-Track Sequencer Patterns by The Unperson

NINA Multi-Track Sequencer Patterns by The Unperson Melbourne Instruments Polyphonic Synth Groovebox video upload by Melbourne Instruments

"The Unperson explores some of the patterns he created for NINA's Multi-Track sequencer update. His patterns and sound are marked by crunchy, wobbly tones, saturated layers, and a touch of melancholy, offering an evocative listening experience. Inspired by unusual sounds and the art of sound design, The Unperson crafts patterns that explore texture and emotion, finding harmony between the unexpected and the familiar. All sounds and patterns created in this video were made exclusively with NINA's multi-track sequencer update.

NINA’s new multi-track sequencer delivers next-gen groovebox power with four independent polyrhythmic, polyphonic tracks. With per-step automation and motorized control, it brings hands-on precision to sequencing. This supercharges NINA’s analog synth engine, unlocking deeper performance possibilities. Add 64 new noise types — from percussive hits to loopable metallic textures and you’ve got a powerful tool for expressive sound design and dynamic rhythm creation. NAMM Museum of Making Music ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact. Update

This is a follow-up to this post.

Additonal details on the upcoming two day event via The Alan R Pearlman Foundation follows:

ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact Opening August 9

We invite you to step into the world of innovation with our new exhibition "ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact." The impact of ARP synthesizers and the legacy of their innovator Alan R. Pearlman (1925-2019) was vast and deeply influential. From progressive rock and jazz to pop, film, and experimental music, ARP instruments helped shape the sound of a generation and inspired countless artists.

Curated by Brian Kehew, the exhibition brings together a stunning array of instruments, vintage media, and behind-the-scenes insights.

Guest Curator: Brian Kehew

Brian Kehew is a Los Angeles-based producer, engineer, and co-author of Recording The Beatles. Kehew’s deep expertise as a synthesizer programmer and performer with artists such as The Who and The Moog Cookbook brings a uniquely informed perspective to this presentation.

C15 Tutorial: Creating Resonator Sounds in Split Mode

video upload by Nonlinear Labs

"In this tutorial Raffaele Colasacco explains the very unusual possibility of creating resonator sounds in the split mode of the C15, where you can, for example, create resonances of pressed keys on the left side by playing on the right side.
Tim Sund then plays numerous examples in which this new function is used effectively.

TR-808 Shootout // Can they live up to the LEGEND??

video upload by Starsky Carr

"The legendary Roland TR80*8 up against the *Roland TR-8S and the Behringer RD-8 Looking only at the sounds - or listening to them! - do they come anywhere close?

The TR-8S uses Roland's ACB technology, which is the same as the TR-8, Roland Cloud plugins and the Boutique TR-08 - so this has you covered for all of those. I'm using the RD-8 Mk2 - you cna tell because its got the black buttons, Mk1 had white.

I've gone through all the sounds (forgot the maracas in the demo bit) and showed how they differ. Taking into consideration no 2 808s will be identical I think they both stand up very well to the orginal TR808.

But if you want the exact sounds...

Introducing MUM M8 DSP - Low Pass Filter Plug-in

video upload by ALM TV

"‘MUM M8 DSP’ is a low pass filter plug-in emulating the filter used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, saturation and bit depth reduction. This in turn emulates our MUM M8 eurorack module which uses a similar filter design.

In this video we take a quick look at the MUM M8 DSP processing multiple sources in Ableton Live.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.

Unique to the plug-in are a clock bleed switch, introducing audible artifacts into the filter path emulating some of the quirks of the original hardware, and a Bit Depth control for downsampling the input for a more character-rich output.

‘MUM M8 DSP’ offers an authentic digital emulation of the original hardware, recreating its distinct sonic character for use for use in your DAW.

More info & download here: https://busycircuits.com/mum-m8-dsp/

Thanks for watching!"

Moog Muse | Bitimbrality &

video upload by Moog Music

"In this video we explore the bi-timbrality of Muse.

We first look at the bi-timbral nature of Muse and how voices are allocated to each of Muse’s two timbres. We then take a look at the Voice Control module of Muse, and how you can use SPLIT to restrict Timbre A to the left side of the keyboard while Timbre B is restricted to the right side. We also look at how you can change the keyboard split point, swap timbre settings, and explore how you can restrict voice counts per-timbre. Finally, we look at STACK and how timbres can be layered on top of each other for deeper sound design possibilities."

Muse | Spatial Binaural Spread

video upload by Moog Music

"In this video we look at some of Muse's spatial and binaural features.

We begin by looking at the Pan Spread control, which by default spreads alternating voices in the left/right stereo field at increasing width. With this we can take a mono synth sound and create something much more enveloping. Next we look at spatial (sometimes called ‘binaural’) modulation with the LFO PHASE SPREAD setting in the VCA more menu. With this setting enabled and an LFO set to per-voice (instead of global) as Pan Spread is increased the LFO will be inverted in the right channel. When used to control a parameter like the volume, this turns a simple tremolo effect into something similar to a rotating Leslie speaker cabinet. Finally, we look at random Pan Spread voice placement."

Bad Gear - WHAT??? I actually have to PLAY IT???

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Elektron sequencers are the prime excuse for aging synth hipsters with weird accents to completely neglect any attempt to get good at playing keyboards.

However, today we are going to talk about the 2013 Analog Keys and although it might be the only keyboard instrument from Elektron’s product portfolio history that doesn’t lead to immediate design-induced retina burn, the keys is NOT the problem here.

"This is an extremely early TVS-1 with serial #0017 built on 10-24-1975. The SEMS have been completely serviced and gone over, recapped and had all pots and switches disassembled and cleaned, and in some cases, the carbon resistive element was changed out for new.

This was originally a 1-voice system that had blanking plates that covered the sequencer and 2nd sem positions. I have installed the 2nd voice as the wiriing was already there for it. I do not have another sequencer to put in it though. I have seen one for sale online and could purchase and install it for an interested party.

The power supply has also been recapped and rebuilt. I have completely stripped and rebuilt the entire pratt read keybed and installed new lubricated bushes. J-wires have all been cleaned up and so the action plays like a brand new synth again."

Moog Minimoog Voyager Aluminum Edition SN 014 w/ Black Central Panel

Compared the top middle panel to others in previous posts here.

"Basically the sickest, sleekest, stone cold coolest Voyager of all time. To say it's rare is an understatement. They only made 100 "Aluminum Edition" Voyagers and less than a handful of those were made with the all black front panel. I've been following these for years and I've only ever seen two including this one.

The all black panel wasn't the original design speck for the Aluminum Voyagers - as you can see from other Aluminum Voyagers on Reverb and from pictures online. I showed it to a friend who worked at Moog for 10+ years as their main repair tech and he'd never seen one, but speculated that it was probably custom built at their factory by an employee who built it custom for themselves.

But whatever the case, it's absolutely stunning and really modernizes the the look of the synth. The Aluminum Edition is cool, but this thing looks like a Ferrari! Easily the coolest piece of kit to come through the studio. Not a scratch on it! Comes with a gooseneck lamp and a Moog rolling rack case (that's immaculate as well)."

Super Lofi Sampling - A Quest For Sonic Destruction - Akai S20 Tape & Koala Sampler

video upload by ChrisLody

"If you'd like to support the channel you can grab a 'Pay What You Want' album from my Bandcamp. https://chrislody.bandcamp.com"

"Just for a bit of fun I thought it would be fun to push lofi sampling to it's logical extremes using a Radio Shack cassette deck I found recently. Confusingly the tape deck is a "Radio Shack TRS-80" which I'm sure is also one of their old computer models so I guess this tape deck was originally designed to work with that computer, maybe even sold with it.

The Akai S20 from '97 has some decent features for reducing sample quality further so we can get into really extreme territory!

There's also a tip for making lo-fi samples on the Koala Sampler too."
