MS Paint Interpereted as audio data = Awesome music!

YouTube Uploaded by r2blend on Mar 9, 2011

"Just made a really weird and awesome discovery.

If you import an EXE file into an audio program as audio data, you hear all kinds of cool stuff. The most awesome by far for me was MS Paint.

It's probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard form something like this. All I did to the audio was master it slightly to make it sound less harsh to the ears, as well as remove a long section of noise.

Here it is on soundcloud:

http://soundcloud.com/r2bl3nd/windows-7-x64-ms-paint-exe

This is the Windows 7 x64 edition of mspaint.exe. I used Adobe Audition to import and edit the audio, but one could jsut as easily use Audacity's "import Raw Data" feature. I imported this as 8-bit, 22050hz stereo audio. I faded in the beginning, as well as removing a long section of noise part of the way through."

Electronic Computer Startup Noise recorded form an LED

Uploaded by r2blend on Mar 9, 2011

"This is of the sound that my computer's LED makes when its light is recorded as sound by connecting a CDS Cell to a handheld recorder's microphone input. Needless to say, it sounded awesome.

You can hear the disks spinning up, the PC Speaker (at 0:08), and all of the other devices that are drawing power. Even the background hiss is from the computer itself, as I had the recorder set to a relatively insensitive setting. Not to mention that the cell was literally pressed up against the light, effectively blocking out all other potential noise or hum sources."

Apple Rejects SoundPrism with CoreMIDI support

YouTube Uploaded by Audanika on Mar 10, 2011
Anyone know what's up with this? What makes this different than other apps with CoreMIDI support?

Audanika GmbH
iPads on eBay
iPod Touch on eBay

Update: I heard back from Audanika. You can find full details with updates on http://audanika.tumblr.com/ (for the archives: you can find the initial post here).

In short, and as I understand it, Apple does not allow you to charge for feature updates based on built-in iOS capabilities. Core MIDI support falls into this category. The only options you have are to offer the update for free, raise the price of the app for new users, or create a new app with the feature. It's a no win situation for developers like Audanika. Giving the feature away for free results in no compensation for the work done, charging more for the app may not compensate for the work and may turn potential new users off - some new users may not want the feature. Creating a separate app for users to chose, results in current owners being left out. The best option which Audanika would like is to simply have the update be available as an in App purchase. No go due to Apples rules.

via Audanika:
"We tried to sell MIDI support as part of an InApp Purchase which apparently nobody before us has tried before. It got rejected because Apple told us we're only giving people access to capabilities of iOS throught hat purchase...

Of course we could raise the price but it would be a very bad solution because we'd be raising the price of our app because of a feature used by maybe 10% of our users. A lot less people would buy SoundPrism and I honestly doubt that this would offset the gains through the higher price."

Update:

StepPolyArp - Midi Step Polyphonic Arpeggiator - Laurent Colson
iPads on eBay

"StepPolyArp is a Midi step polyphonic arpeggiator. The arpeggiator does not play any sound itself, it transmits Midi notes to a Mac or a PC to be used in combination with any sequencer, virtual instrument (VSTi, Audio Unit) or Midi synthesizer.

The arpeggiator can transform chords into sequences of notes played one after the other in several ways. A matrix polyphonic step modulate arpeggiated notes in time and pitch. The main controllers (velocity, modulation, panning, volume, aftertouch, and pitch bend) are also programmable through a step editor. The integrated keyboard automatically adapts to the selected musical scale.

Features:
• 32 steps programmable matrix
• 11 configurable transposition lines
• Features copy and paste
• 8 octaves virtual keyboard
• Receiving MIDI notes from external devices
• External Midi sync (Midi Clock)

Koushion Promotional Video

"Koushion (literally "grid sound" in Japanese) is a new kind of MIDI controller for your iPad. While it looks deceptively similar to a simple Tone Matrix, this is no toy. This video demonstration was completely improvised. The app will be available in the App Store on March 22.

* Includes a 16-step sequencer with a two-octave range.
* Wirelessly controls MIDI software for both Mac and PC.
* Syncs to any external MIDI clock source available to your computer so that the performance or production always stays synced.
* Plays eight scenes/banks individually, chained in succession, or simultaneously.
* Adjustable quantization.
* Switches easily to any major or minor key with the push of a button.
* Assigns each scene/bank to any MIDI channel to enable control multiple instruments at the same time."

DFMZ Modular Synth Jam

YouTube Uploaded by ISOTROPOSPHERE on Mar 10, 2011

"OK mad crazy modular synthesizer folks here is a little jam for you. I am not going to try to remember the patch path as it encompassed all but about a dozen of my patch cables and most of my modules.
The Korg ER-1 mkII is sending midi to the Technosaurus Microcon II which is sending gate and cv to the modular. All other patches are on the modular. Three modular channels using a Hall effect on the Alesis mixer, one other channel is going through the Korg Kaoss pad and a Flange effect.
I apologize in advance for my horrendous dance moves, so consider yourself forwarned. I had fun with this patch although I think my audio cable to the camera from the mixer was experiencing some interference. I did not notice it until I previewed this video."
