The Gloves That Will "Change The Way We Make Music", With Imogen Heap

Some of you might remember Imogen Heap's musical gloves as far back as 2011 when she presented them at TED Talks and then again in 2012/2013 at the CTM Festival. She has now taken the project to Kickstarter here. At the time of this post, £43,078 of her £200,000 goal has been pledged with 29 days to go. The following are some details from the Kickstarter page and further below is a video interview from Dezeen.

via Kickstarter (be sure to check out the site for more!):

"What Exactly Can the Gloves Do?

The gloves capture the movements and postures of your hands. Our software allows this information to be mapped to musical control messages which can then be easily routed to your favourite music software

Specifically, the gloves track the following:

The orientation of your hand
The “flex” of your fingers
Your current hand posture (e.g. fist, open hand, one finger point)
The direction (up, down, left, right, forwards, backwards) of your hand
Sharp movements such as drum hits
This information is transmitted wirelessly to your computer, over WiFi (via the x-OSC board on the wrist).

In order to turn this information into music, we have developed software allowing you to “map” glove data to musical control signals (e.g. MIDI and OSC). The software also allows you to combine glove inputs to make complex controls. For example, the software would allow you to program the following:

'If I am making a fist with my right hand, and pointing downwards with my left hand, map the ‘roll’ of my right wrist to MIDI control change message 60 on channel 2'.

These mappings can then be used to control third party software such as Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro or Max/MSP or plugins such as Kontakt and Omnisphere.

This ability of the software to combine postures and gestures for mapping, combined with other innovative technological advances, means there are literally thousands of independently mappable controls with one pair of gloves (!) - more than most MIDI controllers on the market - all without having to even look at a screen during performance. You can create multiple parallel mappings, switch between sets of mappings, and load and save your projects to share or develop them over time. Finally, you can use the software to listen out for other inputs, as well, further increasing the richness of control and expressive mappability with your favourite music software."

In this exclusive video interview, musician Imogen Heap demonstrates the electronic gloves that allow people to interact with their computer remotely via hand gestures.

The interview was filmed at Heap's home studio outside London, shortly before she launched her Kickstarter campaign to produce a limited production run of the open-source Mi.Mu gloves.

'These beautiful gloves help me gesturally interact with my computer,' says Heap, explaining how the wearable technology allows her to perform without having to interact with keyboards or control panels.

Pushing buttons and twiddling dials 'is not very exciting for me or the audience,' she says. '[Now] I can make music on the move, in the flow and more humanly, [and] more naturally engage with my computer software and technology.'

Each gesture-control glove contains a wifi-enabled x-IMU board developed by x-IO Technologies containing an accelerometer, a magnetometer and a gyroscope.

These work together with a series of motion sensors incorporated into the fingers of each glove that track the degree of bend and the spread of the fingers. The gloves can also understand postures such as an open palm, a finger-point or a closed fist.

The latest version of the gloves feature e-textile technology, where sensors and wiring are integrated into fabric. Heap is now exploring how to make further use of electronically conducting textiles, to reduce the number of hard components in the gloves.

Heap says they will not just change performance, but the production of music too: 'We really feel that they are going to change the way we make music.'

Heap’s Kickstarter campaign aims to raise £200,000 to develop and produce a limited production run of Mi.Mu gloves. If successful, she will make both the hardware and software open source, allowing people to develop their own uses for the technology. 'It’s really exciting to see what people might do by hacking them,' said Heap. The Kickstarter campaign closes on 3 May 2014.

The music featured in this movie is Me, the Machine, a track that Heap wrote specifically to be performed using the gloves.

This piano sound is generated by NSX-39 with vocaloid voice.
NSX-39 has a micro USB jack and works as a USB-MIDI GM ( General MIDI ) sound generator.

It seems that this NSX-39 is a 'usb midi class compliant' device then no special driver is required, that's why it can be controlled with GNU/Linux.
What did I use for this demo video is 'Rosegarden'.

Minimojo - Minimoog Emulation Built in Reaktor

Published on Mar 17, 2014 Steelberry·42 videos

"Minimojo is an emulation of the Minimoog built in Reaktor, available for all registered product owners in the NI Reaktor User Library. http://www.native-instruments.com/en/...

The Minimojo is not in any way a copy of MONARK. The builder did not have access to or ever used MONARK during the making of Minimojo. Instead, the old ensemble Minimood made by NI in 1999, which has then been modified by several users, has been used as the starting point. The basic structure is be recognizable from that early ensemble.
As the Minimoog is the most emulated synthesizer the world probably don't need yet another one. Minimojo should first of all be seen as a proof of concept; how to emulate the should of vintage synthesizers using the Reaktor environment.

The technology developed for this is called Analog Legacy. Analog Legacy is the theory of modulating all functions in a synthesizer at all frequencies to emulate the sound of vintage synthesizers. The key is to find the right balance of the modulation depth for each frequency. Minimojo is the first attempt to use this theory in practice."

Analog Legacy - emulating vintage synthesizers in Reaktor

Published on Mar 17, 2014

"Message from the builder:
'As Reaktor programmer I have been developing synthesizer ensembles with a vintage touch for many years. After a decade locked into the labs I've now managed to finalize a new isomorphic algorithm called Analog Legacy. It's a break away from the perfect generated sounds produced by standard software synths and I'm convinced it will change the world of emulation analog synthesizers.
Just before the release of the ensemble that was the result of a decade of development - then the dominant of software instruments, NI Corporation, releases the Monark. Users were raving about the detail of emulation and character of the instrument. Is it now possible for an independent developer to release an analog emulation of the Minimoog based on the Reaktor platform without being accused of theft?
An ensemble using the Analog Legacy technology has been uploaded to the Reaktor User Library. Will this this ensemble be purged by the Master Control or will it escape through the portal?'

Practical Electronics P.E. Sound Synthesiser

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Here's something you don't see every day. A completed Practical Electronics P.E. Sound Synthesiser. There is only one previous post with an image of the Practical Electronics magazine cover here. See the Practical Electronics channel for more.

"1973 Practical Electronics P.E. Sound Synthesiser

This is a modular analogue synthesiser and controller keyboard (actually a second modular synth in its own right) that was built from a design published in 1973 in the UK magazine Practical Electronics. This is the only one I have ever seen and is possibly the only surviving example.

The design was by G.D Shaw who later designed the Minisonic synthesiser. I think it is fair to say that the design was greatly influenced by the EMS Synthi in both functionality and controls (and sound I have heard). It was also the first magazine DIY synth published in the UK at least.

The Synthesiser is in two parts - a rack unit with the main sound modules (oscillators, amplifiers, tone filters, sample & hold, ring modulator, spring reverb, meter etc) and a separate controller keyboard with extra functionality (oscillator, VCF etc)

This example (the main rack unit) was built exactly to the published specification as far as I can tell and was completed to a very high standard (I would describe it as 'laboratory grade' construction). It features hand wired circuit boards (as per the published design and layouts) that plug in to a 'backplane' so it is a truly modular synth. All patching is done by 2mm plugs on the front panel, original patch cables are included.

The rack unit has a good range of modules included. Here is a complete list -

Stabilised Power Supply
2 x Input Amplifiers
2 x V.C. Modulators (Ramp & Pulse Generators)
2 x V.C. Oscillators (Triangle & Square Waves)
2 x Output Amplifiers
Reverberation Amplifier & Spring Line
Ring Modulator
2-Band Tone Filter
Envelope Shaper (Incl. Trapezoid)
Noise Generator
Sample & Hold
Differential Amplifier
Inverter
Analogue Meter

Quite a good specification!

The keyboard controller design was modified somewhat by the original builder to incorporate extra features (VCF, Joystick controller and extra oscillator I think) but crucially this part of the project was never completed, though all the parts are there, including completed PCB's, control panel, keybed, wooden casing and design notes etc.

The Synthesiser comes with full original documentation, including a full set of original magazines, all instructions supplied with the original kit parts, also many handwritten notes by the original builder detailing his modifications. Also included is a box full of many original spare components, patch cables, interface cable (for the keyboard I think) and other parts.

I bought this several years ago from the original constructor, I was told then that the main rack was fully functioning but had not been used for a long time, and that the keyboard was unfinished. Preliminary tests at the time showed that it powered up and some of the modules worked, but it would need some attention (I suspect the backplane plugs and sockets all need a good clean). I put it on my list of projects to do, but unfortunately I have never been able to get around to it. I have therefore reluctantly decided to pass it on to someone who can, as it is unlikely that I will ever have the time now. So, be prepared, this instrument will require a bit of time and effort to restore it to full operation. At the very least, I would recommend a complete inspection and overhaul of the main unit by a professional synth tech.

I imagine that this unit will appeal mainly to collectors, or those interested in the DIY synths of the 70's and 80's (as I am) I believe it has the potential to compete with an instrument like the EMS VCS3, which it was clearly inspired by.

Note that there is now very little information out there about this design. I have never seen another complete unit anywhere online or on youtube for example, apart from the original designers website (which is now sadly gone) and a couple of brief mentions on Matrixsynth from others who had built them (but no mention if the units still exist)

I think there is a fair chance that this may be the only surviving example, in which case you are looking at a truly unique piece of synthesiser history. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has one though.

This is a big, heavy item and will require careful packing and shipping arrangements. I will ship worldwide, exact cost to be determined at the time and depending on location, but I expect it could cost up to £250 to ship to some locations (but probably a lot less, I will only charge at cost) I have put an extended dispatch time on this listing just so I have plenty of time to pack and arrange things properly, but I will try to send it at the earliest opportunity. Local pickup is also possible by arrangement.

Please Check out my other items! and Thanks for looking."

Audiobus 2.0 Now Available - Game Changer for iOS Devices

iTunes: Audiobus - Audiobus Pty Ltd

This is a game changer: "Presets let you save and share connections and the settings of the individual apps within your Audiobus workflow." If iOS MIDI editors support this you should be able to extend this to your hardware synths as well. Be sure to see the following videos: Presets in Audiobus 2, State Saving in Audiobus 2, and Multiple Effects in Audiobus 2.

What's New in Version 2.0
***IMPORTANT FOR EXISTING Version 1 USERS: If you're encountering a crash when purchasing the In-App Purchase, please delete the Audiobus app, reboot your iDevice and then install it freshly again. You won't be charged twice. We're submitting a bug fix right now. ***

Audiobus 2 introduces a brand new interface and a number of significant new features:
- New Multi-Routing feature (In-App Purchase) allows unlimited connections and effect chaining.
- Presets let you save and share connections and the settings of the individual apps within your Audiobus workflow.
- Multi-channel input hardware support.
- New hardware latency controls

And the press release:

"Audiobus Launches Significant Update to Groundbreaking iOS App-to-App Audio Platform

Melbourne, Australia, April 3rd 2014

Audiobus Pty Ltd, are pleased to announce the launch of the highly anticipated second version of their award winning, versatile and widely acclaimed app-to-app audio routing app Audiobus.

The first major update to Audiobus since its initial late-2012 release launches today. With hundreds of compatible apps and powerful new features like Multi-Routing, Presets and State-Saving, this highly-anticipated release is expected to further expand the possibilities of iOS as a music-making platform.

Audiobus 2’s new Multi-Routing feature, unlocked by a $4.99 USD in-app purchase, makes available to users the full power of their iOS devices. Unlimited inter-app connections can be made, constrained only by the power of users’ devices. This allows for chaining of effects and full control over audio routing. With additional sophisticated support for multi-channel input hardware, Audiobus 2 makes iOS an even more attractive platform for music production and performance.

Presets allow Audiobus configurations to be saved and recalled immediately, and shared with other users via email, Twitter or Facebook.

The revolutionary new State-Saving feature allows compatible apps to save and recall their configurations as part of an Audiobus preset. This provides users with a comprehensive workspace saving, sharing and recall facility. More than a dozen apps already support the new State-Saving feature, including Nave, JamUp, Swoopster, Sector and DM1.

These innovative new features are supported by a beautiful and functional new user interface that gently melts colours from the icons of loaded apps into the background.

'The thing people love about Audiobus is that it’s a meta-app – it’s an app that makes all your other apps better, more versatile, more creative,' said Audiobus director and developer Michael Tyson today. 'We’re really proud of Audiobus 2 and think it’s going to help people get even more out of their apps and their iOS devices.'

Audiobus 2 is available on the App Store today for $4.99 USD.

Arturia adopts Audiobus 2 advances with iSEM synth app update

“'I have gained immense pleasure from experimenting with Arturia’s iSEM for iPad. Being an owner of the original hardware synth, I can confirm that this virtual app stands up, providing a combination of complete familiarity combined with total stability, versatility, and the welcome addition of plenty of presets, plus extra pages and functions, such as the performance layer. An absorbing experience of real quality, I am thoroughly impressed — and at a bargain price!'

- Alan Wilder (Recoil/ex-Depeche Mode)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of an Audiobus 2-supporting update (V1.0.2) to iSEM, its authentic recreation of the 1974-vintage Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) for Apple’s iPad, as of April 3...

As Arturia’s second supreme subtractive synthesizer recreation for iPad, iSEM has proven popular with both first-time buyers beginning a journey into the wonderful world of synths and also seasoned synth professionals like former Depeche Mode keyboard player/programmer/arranger Alan Wilder, who actively appreciates both its authenticity as an original Oberheim SEM owner and the latest developments possible via its iPad host: 'Being the owner of the original hardware synth, I can confirm that this virtual app stands up, providing a combination of complete familiarity combined with total stability, versatility, and the welcome addition of plenty of presets, plus extra pages and functions.'

While Arturia always appreciates such support from acclaimed artists, appealing iSEM improvements abound in V1.0.2 as one of the first such synth apps to support all Audiobus 2 functions. Running as many apps in parallel or series as the host device can handle, Audiobus 2 can handle multiple, independent pipelines, with as many inputs, filters, or outputs as the user wants. Thanks to this Audiobus 2 support, iSEM users can cleverly save presets of their connection graphs and share them via e-mail or social networks. Needless to say, the musical world is getting smaller, it seems, while more musicians than ever can enjoy those thrilling SEM sounds!

Indeed, iSEM continues to do what it does best — providing iPad users the world over with an authentic recreation of the still-sought-after analogue sounds of Oberheim’s original dual-oscillator SEM monosynth and its subsequent integration into that Californian company’s pioneering polysynth developments. Ingeniously, iSEM quite literally taps into all of this and then some, putting more musicality at anyone’s fingertips than its namesake designer dared dream possible back in Oberheim’s Seventies salad days!

Today, then, it’s hard not to be impressed with iSEM offering so much to so many for so little. Just ask Alan Wilder!

Appropriate iPad owners can purchase and directly download iSEM from Apple’s App Store for $9.99 USD/€8.99 EURO/£6.99 GBP."

the sequencer shows two timelines which can have their position and loop lengths cut dynamically, a sort of performance step sequencer. these are the top four rows, showing the playback position and loop length per timeline.

the bottom four rows are the data bits, or notes. some rows are mapped to triggers attached to the envelope generators via cv output.

aleph knobs are mapped to feedback, delay time, filter cutoff.

One Sunday - A Reconstruction

One Sunday - A Reconstruction from Grain Bastard on Vimeo.

"Got up on Sunday, made a brew and played with my OP-1 and some new ipad apps :)

Made a track with the resulting audio on the afternoon and thought I would share that process with you in really basic overview of what I used.

Great instruments imo :)"

Update: Slither in the video is actually Sliver. Thanks goes to Tim of discchord for identifying it.

Hammond Auto-Vari 64 Analogue Drum Machine - World's Biggest Drum Machine?

"Made in 1974, this was Hammond's flagship analogue drum machine.

It is a large unit (probably the biggest drum machine I have ever seen) and it sounds amazing - this drum machine has quite a distinctive, solid and polished sound. The rhythms are preset, but the unique 'auto-vari' function adds a lot of flexibility to the beats. Also it is possible to select more than one rhythm at the same time for endless combination beats.

This drum machine is in very good original condition. It even includes the original smoked perspex music stand! It works perfectly and comes with a copy of the service manual."

"The Rota-Synth is a desktop 8-step analogue sequencer with CV/Gate Out, Midi sync, coupled with a monophonic, true analogue synthesizer. It does not use a keyboard like a conventional synth, but instead generates musical sequences and sound effects that you program in real time."

"This Drumtraks 400 is fully functional and is in very good condition. All of the drum sounds trigger, the MIDI works as does the cassette backup. The sound is classic 80's.

There are a few paint scrapes and one pushbutton (for the save to tape function) has been replaced with a non-original switch (see close-up.) The memory backup battery is good. All of the eproms appear to be original."

"Gakken NSX-39 "Pocket Miku" (Singing Synthesizer : http://www.otonanokagaku.net/nsx39/in... ) .
The voice of NSX-39 is the same voice as " Hatsune Miku ", famous commercial singing synthesizer engine by Crypton.
This NSX-39 is using Yamaha's NSX-1 synthesizer chip ( really amazing chip : you can find English info at http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/produ... )

Anyway I got this amazing small synthesizer unit and shot this video, recorded with ZOOM Q4, direct recording from NSX-39's headphones jack to Q4's line in, and no sound effect was added.
I was surprised because NSX-39 has reverb effector.
Also demo with KORG Kaossilator2 is starting @ 5:00 ;-)"

"Just grabbed my first eurorack modules and really wanted to see what they both sounded like. This is probably as basic as a system gets (it will grow) with just my braids macro oscillator and ripples filter. A4 is doing all the CV work and also sending some FM to the filter."
