Richard Lainhart: CEMS, Theremin, and Ondes Martenot Lecture, BEAF 2011

YouTube Uploaded by matrixsynth on Jun 1, 2011

First three parts of Richard Lainhart's lecture at the Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival on Friday, May 6, 2011, 2PM PST. These cover the CEMS (Coordinated Electronic Music Studio - see the CEMS label below for more), theremin, and ondes Martenot. The audio on these are a little on the low side so remember to turn your speakers back down after listening. You can find a full transcript for each part below in case you can't quite make things out. You can catch Richard Lainhart's lecture on the Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum, followed by a performance, in this previous post.

Voice to Spirit : We Pray
From glassy eyes fell shattered tears,
as we searched the pages to rid our fears,
finding comfort in what we read,
we fold our hands and bow our heads.
Oh Lord we pray for peace, for rest.

Video by Nicholas Rowan and Callum Wheeler - finegoods.com.au"

via Percussa:

"Matthew Daymond, Leanne Butt, Randolf Reimann and Lydian Johnson, also known as Tralala blip, is a special electronic music group from the North coast of New South Wales (Australia). The music group consists of several young people who have a range of disabilities, but all share the same passion: they love making, producing, and performing their own electronic music. The group was founded in 2008 by Randolf Reimann.

The 14th of April 2011, they did a live performance at the Lismore Regional Gallery (Australia). They used Ableton Live as well as several electronic musical instruments such as the AudioCubes, APC40, Kaossilator. Have a look at this great video and song, called 'The Sweetest Girl'."

Missing Link (www.wifimidi.com) wireless control of Korg MicroKorg

YouTube Uploaded by MissingLinkMIDI on Jun 2, 2011

In this video, I demonstrate using an iPad with a TouchOSC (www.hexler.net) template I created (available at: http://wifimidi.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=121) to control a Korg MicroKorg wirelessly via the Missing Link (www.wifimidi.com).

The Missing Link allows users to create completely custom software interfaces for controlling any of the MIDI parameters of their instruments. In this case, it exposes a lot of the controls and functions of the MicroKorg that are not easily accessible (or simultaneously configurable) directly. This is all done without a computer, ensuring the lowest possible latency and highest possible stability for critical performance applications."

iPad editor for the KORG MicroKORG

TouchOSC - hexler
iPads on eBay

Update: I gave this editor a try and it is excellent. It really opens up the MicroKORG and allows you to approach it in a way that was not possible below. You'll discover new things that were once inhibited. Unfortunately the MicroKORG does not make all parameters available via MIDI though. For example you can't adjust the speed of the arpeggiator, and you can select the effect type for FX1 and FX2. Note that is a limitation of the MicroKORG and not the editor.

DIY Serge Style Modular

via this auction

"This is a DIY Serge m-boat instrument. The artist that made it gave a lot of attention in building something creative that added textures for a Serge system or someone looking to get started into a Serge system (which was me). The products manufactured by STS and Rex are of higher quality components. This unit adds functionality and performance which compliments those of a traditional Serge modular system."

This is the one in these videos. You'll find some additional details there.

"This is a very rare Synth Composer Multitrack.

It can work on either 6 AA batteries, or a 9 volt multi adapter, neither of which are included.

It has a tape recorder built into it, that enables you to save your compositions. The tape recorder also allows you to record audio.

Connection wise it has a headphone/line out socket, a microphone socket and the external power input socket.

The PMC100 has 100 instrument or "melody" voices, and another 15 "melody and accompaniment" voices.

The keyboard is touch sensitive in a similar way to the EDP Wasp."

TONTO Pics

via Erick

"My friend Doug Milford got the chance recently to meet with Malcolm Cecil and tour the studio. Doug's brother, who passed away in the late 80s, was named Kim Milford. If you poke around on the web, you'll find that Kim Milford sang with Jeff Beck for a period. And he also did a lot of acting in theater, Broadway, films, television, as well as music composition before his untimely passing while still in his 30s.

Kim had recorded some songs at the TONTO studio (lamentably, none with synths I'm told), and Doug was visiting Malcolm to track down some of the old master reels. Luckily for us, Doug snapped some great photos of the famous TONTO synth. You can see a lot of it very close up"

In addition to Bugbrand, there are some bananafied Wiard modules, and a Haible 'Living VCO' in the system."

"The Metasonix Wretch Machine. Nothing else comes close to the sound of this beast.
Through a weird twist of fate I ended up owning two of these things. This is the newer of the two, and other than a quick 'does it work' power on test, it's pretty much unused. Owning two of them is just excessive, so this one has to go. The new price on these has increased recently (now $3300). This is your chance to get one at the old price.

Comes with all the original box, manual and metal 'beer shield' cover for the tubes. (Recommended only for use during shipping to protect the tubes, unnecessary when in use though you can leave it on if you desire)."

"Casio DG-10 Digital Guitar, Synthesizer built in with sounds from the 80's, electronic drums/percussion built-in. Be a one man band. Start the synth beats that are available then play solo or chords with the percussion for some great sounds. Strings are good (original, can be replaced with pure nylon strings from a classical guitar)

There is not MIDI in or out. But the sounds are played through the built-in AC/DC speakers and output can go out to an amplifier.

Nice spaceship design from the 1980's."

"KORG monotribe is a brief description of the video. Sequencers around and covers the main App in sync. It is originally a simple machine, if you watch this video now, I think that even beginners can use right away.
For synthesizer part, they do not explain it as short Hijo, please enjoy playing around with it quite well in each of many people even know who knows.
Point in the video omits "FLUX" button. This is not to be played synth sound is quantized into eight steps. As the drum beat behind, like a wider range of music if done properly.
