"GRANADA 49 faithfully captures a rare 1970's-era portable analog synthesizer by the now defunct Italian synth-maker Fesma. The instrument's classic wood-accented body echoes the popular aesthetics of the 1970s and its fat, warm analog sound cuts through the mix. We've sampled its 9 stock waveform presets and included tons of custom FX patches and sound-designed ambient synth pads created from the source to make this compact library extraordinarily playable and versatile. Whether you're looking to recreate an old 8-bit videogame sound, fat synth bass tones or razer-sharp lead lines, the Granada 49 library can do it!

The power of Granada is really unlocked by our easy-to-use yet powerful 3D-modeled user interface. Basic sound shaping options are included: volume swell, note attack time, release time and sample start offset let users mold the sound anyway they want. Other main controls include vibrato and a special "Octave" knob, which really beefs up your tone by smoothly rolling in lower and higher octave layers.

The "Glide" option adds an adjustable-speed portamento pitch bend between notes. The advanced tempo-syncable LFO system features configurable LFO shape, modulation target, speed, intensity, and fade-in time. A versatile filter system allows you to select between 13 filter types, modulation options, and control the frequency and resonance. As always, we included our customizable arpeggiator, which lets users control pattern direction, rhythm, swing, randomization and duration. The advanced GUI is rounded out by our modular FX rack, which lets users put any of 18 different effects (reverb, distortion, etc.) in up to 10 slots, in any chain order they desire. This also includes 119 of Soundiron's high quality impulse responses which can be loaded into the "Reverb" effect.

The library is programmed for the full version of Kontakt 5.5.2 and later (OSX 10.9 or later / Windows 7 or later required). It comes equipped with a custom user interface and dynamic sound shaping and mixing controls: volume, attack, release, offset, vibrato, octave, bank preset loading (with optional key-switching), adaptive arpeggiation, advanced LFO and filter systems and our full FX rack with convolution reverb with your choice of well over 100 different rooms, halls, spaces and special FX impulses."

"What is The NDLR...

The NDLR is for anybody who loves making music but finds themselves staring at their keyboards not knowing what to play. It is a new MIDI device that defines a new place in your synth studio. It fits between your sequencer and keyboard controllers and your sound modules. It keeps your oscillators busy by playing sequences of notes over several MIDI channels so you can keep your fingers busy tweaking patches and twisting knobs!

The initial idea: multiple synthesizers playing notes and chord changes at the same time, without a computer in the way. The initial idea evolved into playing up to four parts: a drone note, bass line, pad notes, and a motif sequence, simultaneously.

The NDLR can play up to eight synthesizers via MIDI. It can send...

a bass line to one synth.
an arpeggiated sequence to your favorite lead synth.
chord notes of a pad to up to four synthesizers by using interleaved poly-chaining.
a drone note targeting those exotic evolving synths.
a MIDI pass-through from your favorite external sequencer or keyboard controller and it will be automatically transposed from “C” into the current chord notes.
A ring of seven buttons enables playing any chord degree directly. When shifted, the same buttons allow you to pick chord types: triads, 7ths, 9ths, and suspensions, etc. The sonorities of these chords, major, minor, diminished... are automatically selected based on the chord degree and the key and mode chosen.

All the above mentioned technical details melt away while playing The NDLR. But we quickly realized while developing those features that keeping songs fresh with ever changing patterns and chord progressions is vital. The chord degree and chord type can also be selected externally by a sequencer. The notes played by the sequencer become the root notes of the chords that The NDLR plays.

The eight encoder knobs enable you to vary the sequences, rhythms, densities and range of notes. There are also three LFOs and two randomizers that can be assigned in the x8 modulation matrix to any of the parameters of The NDLR or to external MIDI CCs. This ensures that in addition to the motion of your synth patches there can also be an automated chord progression and modulation of The NDLR parameters.

We stuffed all this into one box that's easy to use and fun to play. It's an easy choice for anybody who loves making music and wants to tweak knobs on their otherwise silent synthesizers. So support this Kickstarter project now!"

"This is the second half of a video I posted a while back but then took down. I always liked the second part much more than the first part, so I decided to cut out the first 5+ minutes. Sorry for the abrupt beginning, but oh well. Here's the original description:

This was recorded in two overdubbed takes. The first take is a bed of deep synth tones, provided by my MU modular, with added Arturia Microbrute and Mutable Instruments Rings in Easter Egg mode.

The second take is a Sela cajon which I mic'd with two mics: one for cajon audio and the other plugged into the Synthesizers.com instrument interface in order to trigger Rings. Thus, in this take you can hear the strumming sound of Rings with every cajon hit.

Key modules include Synthesizers.com's oscillators, Q150 low pass filter, and quantizer bank; Megaohm Audio Delta low pass filter; SSL/Fritz Doubledeka oscillator; FSFX/Fritz Teezer oscillator, and the MOTM 480 band pass filter.

Recently serviced, tuned up, calibrated by Analog Synth Service in Berkeley. .

> Replaced bypass caps, battery; cleaned pots, switches, key contacts; replaced ICs 204, 205, 209, 210, CA3082; ROM & power board upgrade; RAM upgrade; tuned & scaled.

It is in near-mint condition except for two things:

The ink on the front badge has worn off from years of being in a case. I am including a brand new reproduction badge from Perfect Circuit Audio. You can choose to put it on, or not. See fourth photo above for evidence of the reproduction badge
There are two small 2" scratches (cosmetic, not deep) on the bottom paint.
If you know vintage SCI gear the knobs often get flaking paint and damage from use. This has none of that. It looks like nobody's ever turned a knob. Internally, the J-wires look like the unit has never even played. It is simply in amazing condition.

Includes Anvil case with brand new foam, foot switch, replacement "Prophet 5" badge, and original owners' manual."

The 1953 Charlie Douglass "Laff Box"

Here is an interesting bit of history sent in via MATRIXSYNTH reader, monsta poly, Charlie Douglass' "Laff Box" from 1953. It's the original device used to create laugh tracks used for TV shows. As you can see, it looks a bit like a typewriter mixed with the tape mechanism of the Mellotron. It's worth noting the Mellotron would not be released until 1954, however, the predecessor of the Melltotron, The Chamberlain was produced from 1949 to 1956, which means the "Laff Box" wasn't quite the first instrument to employ the technique. Regardless, it is a fascinating piece of gear and technology from roughly the same time period. monsta poly, sent in a couple of links on the "Laff Box" including Charles Douglass on Wikipedia, an Indiewire article on the history of the laugh track, and the following video.

"'The highest priority was to design a synthesizer that would have not one oscillator, or even two- but three voltage controlled oscillators. key was to have more than the standard sawtooth and square waveforms available- but also to employ triangle waveforms and sine waveforms. it was also also deemed very important that the oscillators would have their own voltage control inputs and separate audio outputs to integrate with other modular synthesizers. another very important audio component was the inclusion of a noise generator. any full-scale synthesizer must have dual envelope generators. the first eg is key to sweeping the filter- but a separate eg is also very important to shape the final output or voltage controlled amplifier section.

oscillators as sound generators are very important for audio but they are extremely important for control and modulation effects- and this is why the third oscillator can double as an audio frequency modulator as well as a low frequency oscillator.

looking at many previous designs of voltage controlled filters from the past, macbeth designed a filter that uses the very same parts as used on vintage equipment. the result is a bold, resonant filter capable of a very deep bass end a fantastic for lead solo work.

from experience, parts selection is also key to the overall sound of a synth- many now work with surface mount technology- not the micromacs- they use the same kinde of through hole part technology associated with the powerful synths of old! if the micromac sounds like old school gear- you know why!' - Ken Macbeth"

this module can do many different things from a slight tube sound to distortion and some waveshaping.
here's the description from modulargird. -

'The R-53 is directly derived from our legendary TM-1 device.

It uses a 12AF6/BD6 remote-cutoff pentode and a 12AV7 dual triode. Waveshaping is provided by a vacuum-tube "pulser" circuit that spits irregular pulses onto the input waveform. They synchronize erratically with the input pitch (if a waveform with sharp transitions is used). Combined with true vacuum-tube circuit distortion, this can provide a vast range of complex, aggressive distortion effects, utterly unique in the world.

A basic ring-modulation function is also available in the unit--applying a carrier pitch from an external oscillator to the screen grid of the pentode, this allows making inharmonic sum-and-difference pitch sound effects, with a unique vacuum tube pentode sound.'"
