New FYRD Instruments SQR Analog & MIDI Sequencer

via FYRD Instruments:

"The SQR sequencer is our entry in the modular world. This 4-channels desktop sequencer is very adaptable: you can use it with MIDI gears or modular rigs, you can play it like a classical 16-steps sequencer or go crazy and use the probabilistic approach on top of an innovative stage behavior sequencer, you can sequence on 4 monophonic channels or easily compose a 4 voices polyphonic exotic chord, you can sync it with MIDI or an external clock signal from your modular rig or use its internal clock, to name a few.

Apart from its powerful features, the greatest strength of the SQR is its ability to help you visualize what you are doing. Its big and easy-to-read led display can show you every variations in your sequence, from individual gate lengths to pitches and octaves, from individual slide lengths to chord names or step probabilities. Everything is clear and hands-on: you have direct access to all the essentials parameters and you can visualize everything instantly.

Very similar to the MTRX in design, the SQR is made from top quality components at each stage. From the beautiful enclosure to the Digital-To-Analog converter, each component has been choosen carefully to offer the best possible experience to the user. And we are very proud of the result!

First 50 units will be available by the end of August. The firsts 50 units will be selled at 499€ (incl. VAT), the next will be selled at 599€.

Restored Moog Minimoog Analog Synth with African Makore Hardwood

"You are bidding on a 1974 Moog Minimoog that has been extensively restored. This has been a long term project for me, and while it now works perfectly and looks beautiful, it really should be in a hands of a musician playing it every day, rather than a tinkerer like me. The work that has been done to this synth includes:

A brand new wooden cabinet made from African Makore hardood (this alone was worth 450 dollars).
All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with high quality modern ones (with higher temperature ratings in many cases).
The 5 open type potentiometers have been replaced with closed higher quality clarostat pots. (this includes both volume pots).
The keyboard has brand new plastic caps (that's right, identical modern reproductions, so no cracked or scratched keys). The keyboard has also been leveled, all bushings replaced, and every key lubed with the same stuff they used in the 70s (what can I say, I'm a stickler for detail).
The Vinyl cover and the stickers have been replaced with modern precision replicas. • All the knobs have been replaced with identical brand new reproductions. (I'm told they were made by the same factory). These are shiny and new.
The tuning trimmers on the oscillator board have been changed from wirewound, to modern multi turn high precision trimmers. The downside is that you can no longer tune the oscillators with a screwdriver through the back. You have to take the cover off. The upside is that you probably won't have to, they keep in tune quite well.
The pitch bend pot has been replaced, the center notch adjusted to feel more obvious. The modulation wheel has been tuned to be dead zero when it's down. Previously it wasn't.
Brand new overload lamp, so you can overload to your heart's content.
Brand new hardware such as screws, washers, nuts etc.
Tuned and calibrated, as you would expect."

Moog MG-1 Demo w/ Pulse Width and Feedback Modifications

Published on Jul 2, 2015 fishjaco
Update: Re-Published on Jul 3, 2015

"WATCH YOUR VOLUME!! There are some major volume fluctuations as a consequence of the feedback mod. Don't blow up you ears or speakers.

Here's a demo of my latest modified MG-1. I'm happy with the mods but not so happy with the video. Premiere is just too complicated for me. However I did record and export the synth track in 24 bit 94k. Not sure what Youtube will do to it.

My most obvious goof is when I asserted that tuning a self oscillating filter to a low d sharp would "sound good playing in the key of d sharp". Then I play a note and FAAAARRRTTT. Oh well.

Anyway, you'll get the picture from this 20 min jam.

No fx. Synth audio straight into my Emu 1616m at 24/96. Video is 720p through a canon g12. Not sure what the ambient audio is; probably 16/48. Who cares.

I know, I'm no Vangelis, but at least you get an idea of what this synth is like with pulse width and feedback mods.

Hope this is of some use to you.

Thanks for watching."

Dave Smith Interviewed by Sweetwater

Published on Jun 22, 2015 SweetwaterSound

"Mitch Gallagher sits down with synth pioneer Dave Smith here at Sweetwater Sound. Dave was visiting Sweetwater for GearFest '15, featuring a special panel discussion between Dave Smith, Roger Linn, and Tom Oberheim.

Legendary synth designer and Grammy-winner Dave Smith was the founder of Sequential Circuits in the mid-'70s. His Prophet-5, the world's first fully programmable polyphonic synth, was the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor. Dave is also known as the driving force behind the development of the MIDI specification. He has continued to innovate, and recently unveiled his latest synth creation, the Sequential Prophet-6."

The first soft synth ever, Seer Systems Reality, gets a mention.

Korg MS2000 Synthesizer Factory Demo Songs

Published on Jul 1, 2015 Sound Programming

3. Pink Doll 2001 (2:58)
4. Joker (4:32)
5. Tube (6:20)

7. Fragmented (8:57)
8. Pineapple (9:38)
9. Next Wave (11:11)
10. Jingle "MS2K" (12:29)

The MS2000 is a turn-of-the-millennium virtual analog synthesizer that is 4-note polyphonic. Its design focuses on real-time controls with lots of knobs. The same synth engine was used in the MicroKorg, which has a much-reduced interface that is less suited to real-time control.

It included a vocoder at a time when hardware vocoders were rare, expensive, and inconvenient. The revised MS2000B version has a darker case and a built-in XLR microphone input to make the vocoder engine easier to use."

New DIY MBLoopA Voxelspace MIDI Looper Vs Alesis Andromeda

[techdemo] DIY MBLoopA Voxelspace MIDI Looper Vs Alesis Andromeda

Published on Jul 1, 2015 Maelstroem3

"First test run of the Voxelspace MIDI Recorder and Looper, that i developed in 06/2015 based on the MIDIbox platform.

The loopa is a small USB-powered device, that records live loops (non quantized, no step recording) of up to eight MIDI clips onto SD card.
Notes (and quarternote beat lines) are visualized in 'Voxel Space'. The clips are looped and beatsynchronized.

The hardware is based on a STM32F4, with a whopping 192KB (yes, kilobytes) of RAM :). The OLED is a Newhaven 256x64x16 bluescale display.

Official build thread:
http://midibox.org/forums/topic/19585...

Hope you enjoyed the demo, it was not musical, just a tech test! :)
More features like session switching, loop length configuration and synced mutes/unmutes should be added, once there is more time :). Yes, I know, there are still a few bugs, especially regarding the position display, that is glitching around a bit, but hey, it has character... :-)

Thanks for watching!
Hawkeye/Maelstroem Records"

via the MIDIbox Forum:

"we recently had some very rainy days in southern Germany and MIDIbox-build-fever struck again, so I had to do something... my project build stack is very large, and even some started projects are not complete yet (MBProgramma), but this one has been on the wishlist for even longer than the Programma, so I just had to start it this year... otherwise it would probably never happen :-).

I have to say, that the MIDIbox platform is phenomenal and addictive! It would be so nice to work on something of this quality on a daily job basis... results can be reached very quickly, the documentation and code base is great. Thanks a lot for everything, TK.!

Let's start...

Motivation
* DAW hate
Turning on the computer and loading a DAW as complex as Ableton or Cubase makes sure any of my already limited inspiration will be gone by the time it is able to record MIDI. I'd like to sit down and "just jam". I felt, very often, that what i played was lost in time, because, of course, the computer was off. So I wanted a simple MIDI recorder, that "just records" automatically a few seconds after turning it on, without any major interaction. If what was just played sounded nice, it would be automatically stored on SD card in compatible .MID format for later playback or even some DAW-based post-processing. If not, well, one could just jam on, or delete the track (called clip in this app).

* Hardware minimalism
Building the unit should be quick and cheap. There should only be a minimum number of buttons and encoders. I managed to build everything including the control surface (yes, i know, it looks cheap, but it also was cheap :-)) on one long weekend - and so can you. We just use standard hardware (STM32F4 core, one DINx4, out DOUTx4 and a nice display). Because there are few components, it is very viable to do it on vector board, no immediate need for PCBs...

Ghetto Drum Samplers by Goldbaby

Published on Jul 1, 2015 GoldbabySamples

"For more info and audio demos: http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/ghettodrums..."

"Drums and FX created using 5 vintage drum samplers (RZ1, DDD1, ASRX Pro, ST224 and the ES1). These dope little samplers were used to sample a varied selection of sounds: 808, 909, DR110, DMX, ER1, TE PO12, vinyl, live drums, percussion and more! Those gritty, punchy sounds were then recorded through a couple of 1073-500 pres, a Fat Bustard II valve mixer and various other high end studio gear.

You get a tasty collection of original sounds with heaps of character. Whether you make Hip Hop, Bassline, Ghetto House, Garage, Dub Step or EDM, there is plenty of variety here for you to sink your beat making chops into.

With patches for Maschine (V2) & Mikro (V2), Battery 3, Kontakt 5, Geist, Reason 6 and Logic's EXS-24. The wav files can be used in other samplers as well.

You will need the full version of Kontakt 5 to use the Kontakt patches. The free player will only load them in demo mode."

Yamaha TG77 Synthesizer Factory Demo Songs

Published on Jul 1, 2015 Sound Programming

"Factory demo songs from the Yamaha TG77 recorded direct with no additional effects.

Song List:

1. Pot Pourri (0:02)
2. IT's CooL !!! (2:02)
3. PowerPlay (4:25)
4. House Demo:P.Ellis (6:25)

The TG77 is the rackmount version of the SY77. Released during the transition from FM synthesis to ROMpler technology, it combines advanced FM (16 waveforms, 45 algorithms) with 16-bit sampled waveforms (AWM2). It is 16-part multitimbral and was considered very powerful for its day, though it lacks some features of the higher-end SY99, such as sampling.

It is very common for the display backlight to burn out, as can be seen in this unit. It can be repaired, but the display is usable without it and the replacement part costs enough (typically around $30) and requires enough effort to replace (full disassembly plus soldering) that many people don't bother."

via the seller: "DW6000 wavetable synth with wonderful real analog filters. This unit was modified by Robin Whittle (Devilfish 303 creator) to have audio input into all 6 filters and VCAs at once (Audio input replaces the useless Damper input on the back). Font panel controls were added for input volume and a kill switch for external input. I have used this for processing drums and vocals and the 6 stacked filters sound stunning. Turn down the oscillators and you can use the onboard LFOs and envelopes to shape the filters and VCAs. The NJM2069 Korg filter chips are now being remade into stand alone filter units because they sound so good, you get 6 stacked ones here!

The DW6000 has a very unique and warm sound. The wavetables are multisampled across octaves to reduce aliasing and with the analog filters the range of sounds is huge! I have a DW8000 and actually prefer the 6000's chorus to the 8000's awful delay. It blows the Poly 800 out of the water and with an external editor every parameter can be realtime controlled.

Functionally this is perfect but the front panel is a little warn around the data slider. See pictures. The parameter buttons work fine on this unit but as with all DW's they can wear out over time and double bounce. I haven't noticed that with this one."
