Mouse over the image above for the slideshow controls.

Update: added a few notes below.  I hate picking highlights because I honestly do love it all.  That and I don't like missing anyone or anything.  The focus is on what's new.  More will come with the videos.

This is the full set of 282 NAMM pics including the following sub-sets just posted:

And that's it for my NAMM pics. Videos will follow over the coming days. As you can see I missed a few of the major synth booths including Clavia/Nord Keyboards, Waldorf, Access, Teenage Engineering, Korg, Roland, Novation, Studiologic and Yamaha. This is no slight to them. I would have loved to check them out, specifically the new A1 from Clavia and the new Waldorf 2-Pole filter.  I did see the new full size KORG MS20 kit but the booth was packed and I didn't get any pics. I knew anything AIRA was not going to be shown so I skipped Roland. I typically go to NAMM on Saturday as I'm literally glued to the site posting away all the NAMM news along with everything else that comes in up to then. By Saturday I have a pretty good idea of what has and hasn't gotten plenty of coverage on the site.  Based on that, new product announcements, and prior commitments with those that reached out to me, I go through my list of booths in order.

As for standouts, although I didn't get to try the new A1 from Clavia, I was impressed by the new oscillator and effects section in the demos to date. I like what I hear. I do think they made a mistake with the messaging on it being an entry level synth. Not sure why they chose to go that route as it degrades the synth's capabilities in my opinion and the price does not reflect an entry level synth.

The new Elektron Rytm sounded fantastic. I should have a video of Highsage jamming on it coming up. Hopefully the audio is good.

The Sub 37 is a thing of beauty.

I'm a fan of the Prophet 12 and the new Prophet 12 module. I'm a fan of mixing digital with analog and I think it is capable of timbres you simply can't get out of pure analog.

The Tiptop Audio system at the Big City Music Booth was absolutely insane! Tomio is a Jedi master on that thing. I should have video of it coming up.

The new Make Noise modules were a mind trip. Video coming.

Noise Engineering is new to the scene and their modules sound fantastic. I particularly like the drum module. They also have a vocal formant module. I mentioned the Yamaha FS1R's formant synthesis and they said it was actually based on it to an extent. Video coming.

The STG EMS Oscillator sounded insane. Video coming.

The new Studio Electronics Boomstars sounded pretty incredible. Video coming.

It takes quite a bit to surprise me.  Two things did.  Full on patch memory on a modular synth with the Buchla Music Easel and what's coming for Audiobus. The Miselu iPad keyboard and Quicco Sound controller were pretty cool devices as well. The Future Retro Triadex Muse based sequencer caught my interest. I didn't show it, but it definitely was a geek out moment for me and caught me by surprise. Who would have thought technology based on the obscure Muse would re-appear today.

That's it for now. The videos and pics should speak for themselves. I love it all.

NAMM 2014: Buchla Booth

This was definitely one of the biggest surprises for me this year at NAMM. The largest problem with any hardware modular system is the inability to save patches. Once you create something, you have to give it up to the ether to move onto the next patch.  The Buchla 200e introduced the ability to store knob settings, but not patched cable points. The card you see pictured on the Music Easel allows you to save both knob settings and patch points. It stores 10 presets. You can then create and save as many patches as you like on a dedicated iPad app and then load any patch you want to the card over wireless. You can watch a video overview by Todd Barton in this post. The technology, minus the software of course, existed with the original Music Easel back in 1973, but then you had to literally solder the patch settings in a card. You can see one of the cards pictured here has "Figure 21 Variation" written on it. That's actually a Buchla patch by Allen Strange who wrote the manual for the original Buchla Music Easel as well as Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls.

NAMM 2014: Big City Music Booth

Highlights included Tiptop Audio, Future Retro, Surfin Kangaroo, Dewanatron, Analogue Systems and Metasonix. Note the prototype panning by Surfin Kangaroo. It has 8 Audio Inputs and a couple of outputs. You can configure it as an 8 in 4 out / 4 in 8 out / 2 in 16 out / 1 in 32 out. The black panel under it is just there to cover the rack and is not part of the module.

Don't miss Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. :)

Update: added some info on the Surfin Kangaroo prototype. It's actually a panning system, not a sequencer.

RADIKAL TECHNO pic on purpose. :) Jörg Schaaf got a kick out that.

Update: see this post for a video from Keyboard Magazine covering the updates to the Radikal Technologies Accelerator including, "unisono mode" to fatten up sounds, MIDI out support for the sequencer & arp for external synths, and the ability to save complete FX chains. via Jörg Schaaf on Facebook:

"In version 1.70 it's now possible to save complete FX chains independent from the sound programs. That is especially great when using the Accelerator for external sound processing like in my guitar example from 2013."

Super Synthesis ph01 Knob Recorder Eurorack Knob Recorder

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"the phraser, or ph01 for short, is a knob recorder. it records a dc voltage (via the dc pot and record button) into a loop, and outputs that movement as a 0v-5v control voltage (and displays the output via the led). the rate knob adjusts the playback speed (or loop length, however you want to think about it.) the record button overwrites whatever is in the loop with the current position of the dc pot, allowing for complex sequences with just a little clicking and twiddling. loop length goes from ~18 seconds to over 500hz.

it can be used as a:
voltage sequencer
programmable lfo
gate/trigger source.
static control voltage
clock
drone oscillator
the phraser is, in essence, a knob that keeps turning after you've let go."

New Pirx Modular Matrix Step Sequencer - early prototype

Published on Jan 29, 2014 Pirx Modular·4 videos

"This is an early prototype of matrix step sequencer I have been working on for over a year. Hopefully, I will complete the project this year and post more videos. Eventually, all schematics and code are going to be open sourced.

Each column controls a step on/off (top button), octave (red buttons) and semitone (bottom 12 buttons). The device is based on STM32F4 microcontroller and outputs CV/gate signals (no MIDI). Here, the sequencer controls modular synthesizer playing a simple bass line. Steps can be turned on and off and transposed in real time."

Barton Musical Circuits 1Song Demos

Published on Jan 29, 2014 boogdish·25 videos

"This is the first demo of the '1song' module by Barton Musical Circuits. For more information visit http://www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com/..."

1Song Demo2

1Song Demo 3

"'1Song' is a simple, microcontroller centered synthesizer module for generative (self composing) music. It both composes the melodies and produces the audio itself, requiring no other modules to make music, but it also features inputs and outputs for timing which help it integrate with other modules in a modular synthesizer system. It can also be built in a stompbox style enclosure without these inputs and outputs and act as a standalone music producer, powered from a 9V battery or power adaptor.

The melodies that '1 Song' produces are not traditional melodies produced from a diatonic scale and using duple or triple meter for rhythms. Instead, it composes by using algorhythms to produce semi-random numbers, and uses these numbers for it's pitch and length a note is held. Notes are held anywhere from 1 to 16 beats, and there are a total of 64 different notes which can be played. The notes are not arranged 12 per octave, but rather as divisions of the highest frequency, the lowest note it produces is 1/64th the frequency of the highest, the second lowest note is 1/63rd, and so on.

The board features PC mounted pots for less wiring, and mounting holes for flexibility in panel layout. There are Eurorack and MOTM power connecters."

Now the inventor Dr. Lippold Haken did release an expander to store all your specailly made sounds in and to have better connections with audio devices of any kind. Edmund Eagan made this, he is good friend with Lippold and probably the best performer and demonstrator for it himself. Find a lot of other videos on the web him playing, its unbelievable."

Sitting down on the floor with his two mixed systems he made a hellfire of sounds that are typical for the american way of modular nowadays, very popular and very well presented, thank you Richard. By the way the other Richard sitting next to him is a Prof on the Berklee college of Music in Boston very educated in modular use. They run about seven systems in their school as I heard then."

2013 was a year with a LOT of change (/chaos?) - I spent half of the year over in Sweden and had a lot of back&forth which didn't lend itself to very consistent work. So there weren't many new releases but it did give me quite a chance to reflect on where things could head in the future & begin work on some new standalones. At the start of 2014 I moved back over to the UK, but now to live over in rural Wales - 45 minutes from the Bug-base in Bristol. No more moving imminent!
While there is still some life-change ahead, hopefully 2014 can be a bit more consistent - for one I'll be able to keep the online shop open permanently (umm, stock allowing..).

What is in store for 2014?
Just a few details for now, but I'm working on...
- 2 new standalone processors.
- Introducing a solid RHYTHMIC Line - initial sketch here

In fact, the Rhythmic Line roll out begins today with..
The DRM1 Major Drum
A fully analogue drum voice synthesiser capable of diverse percussion duties.

Special Moog Voyager Signature Edition SN 598

via the seller: "This is the 598th Signature Edition Moog Voyager. It is the third-to-last one ever made in 2003, and was a special arrangement between a dealer in Los Angeles and Moog Music to receive the last three (598, 599, 600) made in an absolutely gorgeous flamed maple wood chassis to commemorate the end of the run.

Because of this exclusive arrangement, not many people are aware Moog did something special with the final units. The Signature Edition marked the triumphant return of Bob Moog to the analog synthesizer world, so it's truly fitting that the last three instruments got something special, just as the final twenty five original Minimoogs did many years ago.

I bought it brand new in 2003 and later sent it to Moog in Asheville, NC for a full factory calibration & software updates bringing it up to v3.X functionality.

I have only used it sparingly in my smoke-free home studio. It is in MINT condition.

Comes with:

1) Original Moog shipping box
2) All documents (including certificate hand signed by Bob Moog and service record)
3) Original gooseneck lamp
4) Moog soft Voyager Gig Bag ($99 value)
5) Moog ATA Voyager hard case ($319 value)

This is a unique opportunity for the Moog collector to turn the clock back over a decade and pick up a truly special example of this legendary instrument in brand new condition."

"At the NAMM Show 2014, Dubspot had the opportunity to check out Elektron's forthcoming Analog Rytm Drum Machine. The Rytm is an 8-voice analog drum machine and synthesizer hybrid that supports samples and looks like a cross between the new Maschine and a Machinedrum. It has the standard Elektron sequencer and 12 drum pads on the left side. The layout should allow for some cool simultaneous performance and parameter tweaking possibilities."

Circuit Bent Sa-21

"Long video of me fooling around with this Casio I bent...currently for sale on eBay"

via this auction

"A little about the SA-21, itself:

100 different sounds to choose from, ranging from traditional to wacky.

5 demo songs

5 drum sounds (hihat, bass, snare, agogo(?), crash)

19 different rhythm accompaniments

13 different super accompaniments

Mods:

"Glitch Randomizer" switch and knob: while playing a note/ drum sound flip this switch to initiate some crazy glitches! The glitch depends on the sound you are using and the placement of the knob. You can change up the glitch by twiddling with this knob. Works best when all the way up. Reset button: Use this button to reset the machine when it freezes up and won't make any sounds. This is common with circuit bending. It basically turns the machine off and on again. Power starve knob: This knob controls how much voltage the circuit is getting. For normal operation, you want this knob all the way up. You can use the starve knob to alter the sounds and get more glitches. There are 2 methods: The first involves turning the knob all the way down so that the circuit is getting no voltage. Then, slowly turn the knob up while playing notes on the keyboard. Stop when you start to hear noises... and then you can also continue to turn the knob up slowly to alter the glitches. The second method starts with the starve knob all the way up to full voltage. Play a demo song then slooowwwwly turn this knob down just a tiny, tiny, tiny bit, and the machine will freak out! Doesn't work every time and may crash the device but simply turn the knob back up, hit the reset button and try again! That's circuit bending for ya. Overall, I like the sounds on this keyboard... And there are a hundred to choose from! I also like the drum sounds! It's fun tapping out a beat on those big buttons! The glitches are awesome, it's like the machine has a mind of it's own... And it's a little psycho :)"

I should probably have thought about this one before I started then I could have told you what the fill option "no fill" means. Actually it means don't play a fill even if there's one defined for that scene but I never use that personally so I forgot. :)

Good job I'm not touting these as the ultimate guide or owt."
