Bob Moog Foundation 2021 Minimoog Raffle

video by moogfoundation

"The Bob Moog Foundation is excited to announce its 2021 Minimoog Raffle, featuring a vintage, iconic Minimoog Model D synthesizer, serial number 8903, set in a stunning custom cabinet made from rare African Makore.

Update: new video and some pics:

2021 Minimoog Raffle In Custom African Makore Wood Cabinet

For more information, photos and tickets, visit https://bit.ly/MinimoogRaffle2021

The raffle is open internationally from March 1, 2021 until 11:59pm ET on March 29, 2021, or until all 4,500 tickets sell out, whichever comes first.

Funds raised from the raffle will be used to expand the Foundation’s hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, currently inspiring over 3,000 elementary school students per year through the science of sound. The raffle will also help support the Moogseum, an immersive, experiential facility located in Asheville, NC, which brings Bob Moog’s legacy and the science of sound and synthesis alive for people of all ages. The Moogseum was closed for five months in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The vintage Minimoog Model D being offered, serial number 8903, was built at Moog Music's Buffalo, NY-era factory during the late 1970s, has an estimated value of $6,500, and will only go up in value given the highly coveted nature of the synthesizer. This Minimoog has been carefully restored and future-proofed by the renowned synthesizer technician Wes Taggart of Analogics, and is in excellent technical condition. Taggart, also a lauded woodworker, fabricated the custom cabinet from rare African Makore wood, which is known for its beauty, strength, and durability.

Session: Music Instrument Design for the Powers of Ten
Speaker: Tatsuya Takahashi
Video presentation: Catalyst - Institute for Creative Arts and Technology

We are delighted to welcome Tatsuya Takahashi of KORG. Here’s what he had to say about the session- "Making a living from designing musical instruments is a funny business. On one hand they are commercial products. On the other, they are forms of expression. I'll be navigating my experience of grappling with this duality through how many times each project is manufactured - in powers of ten. From the big hit volcas to the personal projects that are painfully close to my soul, each project has a different story to tell, but there's also a continuum that runs through them all."

"When I was 16 I wanted a car, my parents bought me this synthesizer. I never really did learn how to play it. It has seen minimal hours of use, it's never traveled and has been kept in its case for almost all of its life. Time to let it get used by someone who will appreciate it!

Over all its in really nice condition for being 35 years old.
The only things I see of issue are one key has a very minor chip out of the bottom. 2 slider caps are missing, Everything seems to function as it should except the AUTO Tune button. Once pressed you have to cycle the on/off for the keyboard to play again."

When I was 16 I wanted a synth. I convinced my dad to get me an Oberheim Matrix-6 for my b-day and x-mas gifts that year. I actually begged for it. Hence matrix and MATRIXSYNTH. :)

Joie de vivre by Moognase

New release from supporting member, Moognase who had the following to say about it:

"The album „Joie de vivre“ is a cycle of ten quiet, meditative pieces. While all orchestrated similarly, based on a classic trio formation (drone, bass/sequence, melody), each one has a special feeling to it, and the whole album encompasses a variety of emotions, from curiosity to desperation to happiness, and finally culminating in a sense of deep serenity. The music was created with a multitracked Moog Grandmother and a small number of outboard effects, from January to February 2021."

How to program the Oberheim DX, DXa or DMX Drum Machine

video by T O N E L A B

"Skip spiel @4:03

Now this was a lot of fun taking the old legend from '82 for a spin. Apart from the 808, the DX would have to be one of the most 'fun to program' drum machines around... it's not (just) the vintage 12-bit sounds.. but the workflow and basic, yet 'more-ish' interface... daunting if you're not familiar with it, but once familiar.. it's like riding a bike down a hill. Being able to swap out sound by lifting up the hood, is like a hotting up a car.. 'boffin-style!'

DIY Synthesizer with ESP32 (super/hyper saw, aliasing free oscillators)

video by Marcel Licence

"This video shows some impressions of using the ESP32 for a little synthesizer project.
All processing is done on one core with sampling rate of 48kHz.
I've connected a master keyboard via MIDI to a serial input.
The synth actually can play 6 voices together (also with 6 oscillators per voice in unison/detuned mode).
The oscillators are aliasing free (wave forms had been generated in advance to avoid fold back of frequencies above nyquist).
Rough ADSR for velocity and filter is implemented.
---
I am preparing a little arduino project for sharing. It will be available soon..."

Polymetric Acid - Volca Sample, Beats, Keys & Bass

video by ChrisLody

"This was one of those jams where I went into the studio with no ideas and little enthusiasm, but turned okay I think. I've been making a few bit of polyrhythmic and polymetric at the request of Sonicware as patterns that are going to be presets on the XFM. It's something I really enjoy exploring, especially polymetric music. I love the fact that you can combine some crazy pattern lengths but as long as there is a steady pulse it all makes sense.

In this track the Volca Sample and Keys are playing 4/4 with pattern lengths of 16 while the Beats is set to 14 step and the Bass has it's steps set to 14, 15 and 16. I like that about the Bass, it's quite a polymetric monster just on it's own, I'm not sure Korg did that with any of the other Volcas so far which is a shame I think.

This was also a chance for me to try something I rarely do on the Volcas, play the keyboards on them live. I only realised today that holding a step on the Bass is interrupted by the other layers which can be used to quite a cool effect. I managed to play a bit of a howler in the middle on the Keys tbh, but I quite like it like that :)

Mixed on the Inkel MX880E with reverb from the Zoom 1201 as is so often the case with my jams."

"A quick update on my EM-101 filter mod...

I wasn't happy with the previous approach - trimmer pots mounted to the front panel - it was too fiddly to make any meaningful adjustments.

Proper sized pots to play with, plus the option for foot pedal control.

Cheers!"

Korg DW-8000 Vintage Analog Hydrid Synthesizer and Retroaktiv DW-8P Programmer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Korg DW-8000 has been unsung hero for decades but has finally been getting the credit it deserves. The dual DWGS oscillators are amazing and offer some really unique waveforms you wont find anywhere else. You’d be hard pressed to find another feature rich synthesizer: four oscillator modes (Poly 1 & 2, Unison 1 & 2), a 24 dB VCF filter, 2 unique 6 section envelope generators (ADBSSR), digital delay, velocity, aftertouch, and an arpeggiator.

The DW-8P programmer gives you hands on control over every parameter and more. The patch generator feature is among the best and most consistent ive ever used and can be sound specific (pads, bass, bells, analog, digital, random and more). The added EFX section gives new sonic territory to an already lethal unit.

Both units are fully functional. The #2 button on the front panel takes an extra press sometimes and the occasionally the highest A or A# note (but not the key) will hang (a power cycle will fix it). The Korg has some scratches normal for its age and the DW-8P is practically flawless.

The DW-8000 is unsung is great at dark airy strings, PPG-like pads and thick unison bass."

Korg Trident - 1980 Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer

video by Perfect Circuit

"Originally produced at the dawn of the 1980s, the Korg Trident is an 8-voice, polyphonic analog synthesizer with three distinct, programmable sections. The Synthesizer, Brass, and Strings section can be dialed in to your liking, and then layered together for complex patches or assigned to split sections of the keyboard for totally independent parts. Each section of the Trident certainly has its own sonic identity, so crafting pads, basses, leads, and other sounds becomes easier after spending some time to learn the strengths and features within each section. There’s also a global Flanger effect which can be assigned to one of the three sections, great for building washy pads with the Synthesizer or Strings sections.

In this video, we show off a handful of the lush, vintage sounds that can be coaxed out of this classic synthesizer. The Trident is certainly an instrument that rewards playing its keyboard, while engaging and tweaking the different sections as a performance element. We also showcase some of the Trident’s external CV inputs with a small set of Eurorack modules, expanding the instrument with more complex modulations than what is possible within the Trident alone.

"Cascade is a ratcheting envelope generator, VCA, and sound source all within a compact form factor. The unique interactions of its feature set open up new worlds of rhythmic patching and modulation. Easily create ratcheting sequences, bouncy-ball modulation, and pumping compression, all within a single module.

At its core, Cascade is a powerful envelope generator, which is normaled to a high fidelity 2164 based VCA. You can patch in external audio to the VCA, or take advantage of 4 internal audio algorithms: white noise, 808 kick and hi-hat, and a high frequency sine tone. Cascade will open up your system in ways that make you wonder how you ever lived without it.

• Envelope output and internal audio generated at 96kHz
• High fidelity 2164 based analog VCA topology
• Analog signal path with digital control for envelope following, compression, and classic VCA behaviors
• Snappy envelopes all the way down to 500 microseconds in length
• Reprogrammable via the Daisy ecosystem"

Can you replace a classic 70s string machine with a synthesizer?
Yes, you can, even if the concept is different. With the Polysix you get a synthesizer with analog chorus, phaser and ensemble effect. The Ensemble fx in particular is ideal for creating wide and soft strings. The internal effect section is generated via three serial BBD delays. Another plus point is the soft SSM filter.

"Mint condition Access Virus TI2 limited whiteout edition. I love this synth so much but I have to part ways with it. It has the best keyboard action in the world hands down. Such a beautiful piece of music history, atheistically and sonically. #3 of 150 in the entire planet. Hardly used ever, spent 90% of the time under a protective cover, in a smoke free studio."

Sonicware Liven XFM Prototype - Demo 4 - Adding Layers Live

video by ChrisLody

"This is something I'd planned to play in a stream at some point and still may do that as a demonstration as it shows how live elements can be added to the Liven XFM tracks live

So when the sequencer starts to play the synth engines, sounds and setting are already loaded in but only the bass has been programmed. You'll see me punch in some rhythms for the drums then unmute that track so it plays. I then use the Parameter Lock to change step 15 to a clap and set the reverb level for the clap on that step only. I then real-time record the slightly unsettling pad sound and play the lead live.

The sequencer also offers non-realtime step sequencing as another way of entering note information which is how the bassline was programmed in which is done in the same way that I programmed the drums, but I'll save the details of that for a tutorial video"

See the Sonicware label below for more.

Shared System Tutorials | Part 32 | Mimeophon Microsound

video by Cinematic Laboratory

"Always fun to create a new episode! As I mentioned before I am now including the full range of MakeNoise modules in these tutorials to accomodate people who need to know more about QPAS and Mimeophon. This session is about microsound exploration on the Mimeophon instead of Morphagene. The Morph has a Strega reel because I also wanted to find out how this evil little machine would sound in a bigger setting. So there's a lot of noise coming up. Have fun, and modulars really help you to stay home, safe and inspired!"

Sensel and SonalSystem present; Analog Essentials MPE

video by Sensel

"Analog Essentials was created by the pros at SonalSystem. It is a deep collection of chromatically sampled synthesizers, arranged into presets for Ableton Live 10 & 11 as well as Logic Pro X 10.5.

Vintage synthesizers and modern eurorack creations were processed and sampled for every note and meticulously prepared for Live and Logic Samplers into instrument racks that give you immediate and full control over variation and mix. The resulting sounds emanate a vintage, “video shack soundtrack” vibe that is hard to resist.

MPE is mapped for each preset, offering full expressive control over all sounds, bringing all the character and richness of analog into a modern, powerful format. (Note: Live 10 has no MPE mappings). In total, the sound pack includes 60+ Presets for Leads, Bass, Pads, and Drones, 3000+ sample files (with loop points in meta data), and 9+ GB of pure sonic bliss.

On sale for just $39 for the next two weeks ($59 MSRP)!

Techtonics Sound Set for Live 11 and Bitwig Studio

video by Sensel

"Techtonics features presets for the newly released Ableton Live 11 and Bitwig Studio 3.3+. It offers dark sounds, gritty textures, and rich harmonics that were sampled from analog synths like the Moog Subharmonicon, Meeblip Geode, and Buchla Music Easel. Included are 13 Sampler synths, over 60 polyrhythmic loops, five drum racks of percussion and bass kits, and a full kit of 16 unique kick drums. The result is a veritable construction kit for modern techno-derived genres that rely heavily on rhythm.

Beyond great sounds, Techtonics has many creative uses of MPE. For example, the vertical "slide" gesture on the "Kits" is used to create a "rim" at the top of all the pads, when played with a 4x4 grid. This rim adds a distortion, effect, filter, or other variation to the pad.

On sale for just $39 for the next two weeks ($59 MSRP)!

Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter | The Prince of Analoge 80s Power!

video by Espen Kraft

[Clarification in case the synth police shows up: The MKS-80 is closer to the Jupiter-6 than the Jupiter-8.

Internal chips:
Jupiter-6: 12x CEM3340 VCO, 6x IR3109 VCF, 6x CEM3360 Dual VCA
MKS-80 (to serial #511799/early models): 16x CEM3340 VCO, 8x IR3109 VCF, 8x CEM3360 Dual VCA (4 for X-Mod)
MKS-80 (serial #511800 and higher/later models): 16x IR3R03 VCO, 8x IR3R05 VCF/VCA, 4x CEM3360 Dual VCA (for X-Mod)

The Jupiter-8 also used a Roland IR3109 IC for the VCF, BA662 for the VCA, and IR3R01 for Envelopes.

Via wikipedia: "The voice architecture is almost identical to the Jupiter-6 synthesizer, the service manual states that "The module board of MKS-80 features the following in addition to that of JP-6, its brother module. 1) HPF. 2) Low boost circuit in the 2nd VCA. 3) DC supply current boost circuit (IC50)." The unit is fully capable of producing most of the Jupiter-6's signature sounds, in addition to many sounds unique to the MKS-80. In February 1985, Roland started producing a new revision of MKS-80, known as "Rev 5", that had no ties with any previous Jupiter's hardware, as it used a new generation of both Roland VCO's, VCA's and filter. The Rev 5 filter was also used in JX-8P, JX-10 and MKS-70 synthesizers."

And the following which I thought intersting:

"Confusion with Jupiter 8
In 1998, UK magazine Sound on Sound published an article about MKS-80. It contained a critical typo. Instead of referring to Jupiter 6, the comment about the rack version constantly referred to Jupiter 8, leading to serious confusion and even spreading myths across various online forums. However, once we read that article and replace numbers 8 and 6, the whole part of the article suddenly makes sense: 'The MKS80 delivered the entire Jupiter 6 wish-list and more, including a much larger memory and upgraded internal electronics. Now let's get one thing clear -- despite a few commentators postulating otherwise, the MKS80 had nothing to do with the Jupiter 8. Although there were ultimately to be two versions of the instrument (one with the Jupiter 6's Curtis oscillators, the other with custom chips developed by Roland themselves) both retained the architecture of the Jupiter 6, sounded identical to the Jupiter 6 and, apart from their many enhancements, were the rackmount module versions of the Jupiter 6.'." Also see this post for The Story of the Roland JUPITER-8 & JUPITER-6.]

--- That said, here is the description for the video above:

"Roland MKS-80 - the Super Jupiter. Rolands last analog VCO synth and one that packs all the punch of the mighty Jupiter 8 and 6 into one box

With 8 voices, 16 VCOs, fast envelopes, cross modulation, sync, 2 ADSRs, a very flexible LFO and velocity and pressure sensitivity over Midi, the Super Jupiter was the professional musicians dream module in the mid 80s. Used on countless hit records.

Through the years the MKS-80 came out in a Rev.4 and a Rev.5 and the debate over which one sounds the best never seems to stop. I don't care about that at all. The versions used in this video are both Rev.5, but as I actually compare these to a Jupiter 8 here, no one should tell me that the Rev.5 can't sound like it. It DOES sound like it, down to 99% and that's enough for me.

A big thanks to Joakim Tysseng for the loan of the Jupiter 8 and a big thanks to Brynjulf Blix for the one MKS-80 and the MPG-80 programmer. Anders Jensen has as always been very kind too and thanks for the other MKS-80 Anders, as well and for all the driving!

The other MKS-80 programmer I use here is from Retroaktiv and that's a new one. I did a demo of that just a couple of videos before this so check that out if you want to."

MPE and Vintage Knob Support Update for the Sequential Prophet-6 and OB-6 Now Available

You might remember the beta OS announcement for MPE and vintage knob support posted here. The update is out of Beta and now available. via Sequential:

"Sequential has just released a new OS for the Prophet-6 and the OB-6 that adds much-anticipated features:

- Support for MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression). This enables the Prophet-6 and OB-6 to respond to MPE-driven controllers such as the LinnStrument®, Expressive E Osmose®, Roli Seaboard® series, and others.

- Prophet-5 Rev 4-style “vintage” mode. This gives the Prophet-6 and OB-6 a looser, more organic sound that emulates the behavior of vintage synthesizers where the behavior of individual oscillators, filters, and envelopes vary from voice to voice.

- Improved aftertouch curves for enhanced expressiveness when using the Prophet-6 and OB-6’s own keyboard.

- The new features significantly enhance the expressivity of both instruments.

We encourage you to try them out.

"I'm adding some new functionality to my modules, this is still a work in progress but will be soon available.

The modules can now easily listen to MIDI CC messages and use them to control anything. Additionally I am working on a web editor to be able to configure all the MIDI settings.

For this demo I also pimped CYCLE and added a 'MIDI CC scale' in which mode it sends CC messages instead of notes.

New Baloran Demo: Exploration des saturations des VCA mélangeurs et quelques écrans ;)

video by Laurent Baloran

Googlish:

"I reveal a little more each time;)
Here I explore the saturations of mixer VCAs. When I intervene on an encoder on the right of the panel, it changes the gain of the VCAs. I find this saturation very musical, it only distorts the waves, I love it. Otherwise, I also have a little fun with the Tap LFO and the different syntheses: analog, digital or mixed (ADC and digital processing).
At the very beginning, you hear a digital synthesis module which sequences via euclean divisions 4 oscillators + individual envelope."

"Sequencer is in "good" condition for it years. As seen in the pictures is a VERY LOW Serial Number 86. This unit belonged to Patrick Moraz of the bands "YES" and "The Moody Blues" It was given to me during the time I worked with him 25ish years ago. He is also pictured on the original Manual Art. Has a as far as I know one of a kind "Twin Gate BUS MOD". See picture with original sticker of work done in England, I don't fully remember what the Twin Gate BUS MOD did, but I believe it allowed for 1/32 notes. I cannot find any documentation to prove it though. I have no way to "FULLY" test the device anymore. It powers on and I can step through the sequence. Some of the slider caps need replacement and can be purchased on an ebay auction for 5 euro ea. One of the Twin Gate switches needed replacing so I replaced all 16 of them. "Albedo by Sinevibes is a granular cloud reverb effect plugin for KORG prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1."

via Sinevibes

"Albedo is a granular cloud reverb plugin for KORG prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1. It continuously records audio into a buffer, and at the same time plays multiple looping snippets from it – with each such snippet or “grain” having its own randomized size and position. Together with feedback and additional stereo widening, this creates a lush “cloud of sound” reverb effect. The algorithm also features a “freeze” mode: it can stop overwriting the buffer and play the granular cloud indefinitely, making it possible to layer any other sounds on top of it. This plugin comes in two versions: 16 grains with forward playback (+) and 10 grains with reverse playback (-)."
