"'No talking' demo of all the internal preset sequences of the DSI Sequential Prophet Rev2-8 voices.
The Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet Rev2 is an update of the Prophet '08 with more possibilities and modulation options in order to get much more complex textures without losing the "classic Prophet sound".
In this demo I will just let you hear what the amazing Dave Smith Instrument's sound designers have made for this amazing synth simply by scrolling through the Bank 4 of the Factory Presets. You will find single layers, split layers (A-B) or stack (dual) layers (A+B).
No additional effects or outboard processing here. 'What you listen is what you get'."

Behringer's RD9 TR-909 Clone Finally Ships
This one was a long time coming. You could have picked up a prototype back in July of 2020 here.
"RD-9 is now finally shipping. We're sorry that it has taken much longer than we had anticipated but Covid plus the current global supply chain challenges didn't make it easier.
Compared to the earlier version, the RD-9 has been completely redesigned with many new features added. We're very proud of the RD-9 and can't wait to hear all your feedback.
We also like to thank the many wonderful beta testers who helped us with valuable feature suggestions and to ensure the product is now in perfect shape.
Please be aware that it'll take some time to fill the huge backorders we have on hand. Thank you for all your patience and support."

OB XD discoDSP Synthesizer REVIEW and LIVE PERFORMANCE by AGD Andrew G Dugros | Use Headphones
video by Andrew G Dugros
"This is not an in-deep review but a first contact review with this great synthesizer, the OB-XD from discoDSP. At the end of the video I've played a LIVE PERFORMANCE with Cubase and Novation SL 61 mkIII.
OB-XD overviwe (from offiial website):
OB-Xd is based on the Oberheim OB-X. It attempts to recreate its sound and behavior, but as the original was very limited in some important ways a number of things were added or altered to the original design. OB-Xd was designed to sound as good and as rich as the original. It implements micro random detuning which is a big part of that sound."

“IOLabs Flux 33 - Benjolin meets Arcane” by Friendly Noise
video by Friendly Noise
"IOLabs Flux, Spherical Sound Society Arcane, After Later Audio Benjolin V2, Steady State Fate Vortices, Befaco Rampage, Befaco Percall, Xaoc Tallin
Please make sure to listen in stereo!!
Video sections: 00:06 01
04:17 02
13:50 03
24:02 04
All sounds were recorded live with two strictly monophonic modules: Benjolin V2 and Arcane, but the use of panning and both Befaco modules results in very interesting textures, which sometimes sound like there is more than two voices at the same time.
Flux is just triggering a steady note as clock source. Density and Length are controlled in real time with the encoders and macro pots. There is only one single pattern in the whole video.
Arcane is clocked by the first channel of Flux. The output of Arcane goes into Tallin to raise the level and to add some warmth with Tallin’s internal saturation. The output of Tallin goes to the first monophonic channel of Vortices.
The voltage of Flux’ channel one is set to S/H mode and goes to the second channel of Tallin. From there it goes to Vortices in order to modulate the panning of Arcane. Since the voltage follows the triggers, every sound generated by Arcane has a different panning position, which greatly enhances the feeling of listening to a drum synthesizer.
Benjolin is a voice module, but it doesn’t have VCAs, so you need some external help to control the length of Benjolin’s sounds. This can be achieved sending the output of Benjolin to the first input of Percall. The decay length is manually controlled and the output goes to the second monophonic channel of Vortices.
The output of Flux goes also to Rampage, where the first envelope is used to generate “bit-crusher”-like sounds. The envelope output goes to the third monophonic channel of Vortices.
Finally, Benjolin’s direct output goes to the fourth monophonic channel of Vortices. The panning is also controlled by the voltages of Flux, as described above.
Some compression and reverb were added in the DAW after recording."

What comes after | IDM demo with Roland D-50, SH-101, Yamaha RS7000, Toraiz Squid
video by MIDERA
"Upon writing my recent review of the Roland D-50 (here: https://www.midera-artist.com/roland-...), I decided to reach out to a friend who had bought mine, and I bought it back from him, mostly to see - does the UI really suck as bad as I thought it did?
The first thing to note - it didn't take long for this song to irritate me, so, perhaps this isn't the best track to start off with on the D-50, but as I state in my review, the sound of the D-50 is really pleasing.
So - for some reason, the D-50's interface wasn't quite as bad as I thought. For one reason or another, my brain seems better equipped to handle it. Why is that? I haven't exactly been using it for over 2 years. I think part of it is, two years of exploring other synthesizers, a pandemic, a job change, other things - I think we're just more complicated than 'sit down with X for Y hours and you'll get better.' Like, it took my daughter sitting on a bike 3 times, unmoving, to suddenly... just be biking. So much goes on behind the scenes that contribute to our abilities and knowledge.
Anyway, as I recall - The D-50 is a keeper."
Synthesizer Music Instrumental "Genesis" By Joseph Angeliss. 1994
video by Angeliss The Synth Man
Anyone that's owned a KORG Prophecy should immediately recognize the start of this one. It's the "Prophetic Steps" preset. Not sure what follows but considering it's from 1994 and you don't often hear that classic preset in synthesizer music, I thought it worth a post. Little bits of classic synth goodness here and there. It's crazy to think of the KORG Prophecy as a classic synth. I remember when it first came out in 1995 and reading about it in Keyboard Magazine, an issue I still have. It was the birth of physical modelling along with the Yamaha VL7. Clavia's Nord Lead was the first virtual analog synth to be released in 1994.

MATRIXSYNTH Should be 100% Back Online
Update: maybe not 100% after all. It looks like https is not working yet.
Update2: https is back. All should be good now.
In case you were wondering what happened to the site, the ISP that hosts the matrixsynth.com domain name suffered a DDoS attack.
When I noticed the site was down, I reset Blogger to host the site back on matrixsynth.blogspot.com and sent a notificantion out on Twitter and Facebook (and The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge).
Key takeaway as a reader of the site: bookmark https://matrixsynth.blogspot.com, and check-in on Twitter and/or Facebook for updates.
It's worth noting site outages have been few and far between.
After this outage though, I am considering going back to the https://matrixsynth.blogspot.com domain. I can just set matrixsynth.com to redirect to it and when I'm long gone, the site will remain available. One of the reasons I chose Blogger as a platform is because it should live on long after I'm gone, ensuring the site and all the captured history lives on.
Update3: One thing to consider: if the matrixsynth.com domain were to ever expire, links using it within posts would need to be swapped with matrixsynth.blogspot.com in order to work. I wish there was a way to purchase domain names permanently...

Berlin School on the Balcony // Gotharman's TinyLD Granular Synth #TTNM
video by THE TUESDAY NIGHT MACHINES
"Playing some Berlin School electronic space music with my Gotharman TinyLD mkII on the sunny balcony. The TinyLD is Gotharman's Little deFormer 3 granular synthesizer workstation in a smaller, more portable form factor. It has fewer knobs and buttons, but the same screen, processor and general feature set as its bigger sister. I've modded my TinyLD with a light dependent resistor (LDR) for gestural control, as well as with three knobs and two switches.
More info on the modification here: [see this post]
For this jam session I created an analog-style bass line, using the awesome sounding new State Variable Filter algorithms from the recent LD3/TinyLD software update. Then I added an electronic string-like pad sound and some bleeps, bloops and noise hits. The LDR controls the filter cutoff on the pad sound, letting me spontaneously add some variation by waving my hand over the top right corner of the TinyLD. Of course I also programmed both morph layers with slightly different note sequences and effects settings. I also use one of the MIDI switches to freeze the mandatory granular effects ;-)

「SLEDGEHAMMER」by SYNTHFOX ~overview~
video by SYNTHFOX Channel
"Overviewing my newest module, SLEDGEHAMMER. This is a wicked dynamics and harmonics processor with huge feedback play capabilities!"
SYNTHFOX Reverb Shop
"Meet SLEDGEHAMMER, a vactrol gate core experimental dynamics and harmonics processor. This module serves many needs, such as mixdown, wavefolding, waveshaping, distortion, VCA, suboctave generation, and much more. The three signal inputs - one with a dedicated thru-zero VCA, and four differently processed outputs provide endless tonal possibilities and a core module for creative patch-programming.
SLEDGEHAMMER is intended for heavy feedback usage. The INPUTS section mixes down three signals (audio or CV) for further processing. The first and second inputs have dedicated attenuators. The third input is special: it is a voltage controlled crossfader that fades between the negative and positive copy of the input signal. The FOLD output is normalized to input 2, and the SHARP output is normalized to input 3, so patching audio to input 1 and adjusting other inputs' volumes already creates a self-patched feedback loop.
The heart of this module is a vactrol-based dynamics processor ('gate') similar to the widely known low pass gates. It processes the mixdown of the three inputs from the INPUTS section: the big LEVEL knob, two Level CV (LCV) inputs and the PING input control both the amplitude and the slight filtering of the signal: from quiet and dark to loud and bright. The first LCV input has a dedicated attenuverter; the second one has a simple attenuator. The PING input expects a gate, and upon receiving one, will strike the gate with a sharp decay-only envelope. This input has a simple passive circuit behind it, which can be creatively exploited: for example, striking it with stepped voltages, e.g. a S&H output, will make the circuit skip some strikes, and the remaining strikes will have different velocity. The DULL / VIVID switch on the left chooses the type of the response: the DULL setting yields daker, quieter tones, while the BRIGHT setting makes the gate sound more open and loud. Both modes are useful in different applications.
Finally, the output of the gate core is passed through different harmonic processor to create the four SLEDGEHAMMER outputs: GATE, FOLD, BEND and SHARP.

17 Mins With A Buchla Automaton
video by zack dagoba
"A self-playing patch:
Two VCOs (258) are cross modulated to produce an evolving sequence of clocks, not just random because the interactive nature of the cross modulation creates unexpected pauses and clusters - the envelope follower (model 230) helps in extracting the clocks. These are sent to an LPG which gates a modulating sound from the 259 - the main tone. The MARF sequences pitches, but these are shifted with a clocked random voltage, changing every 5 or 7 pulses (using the MARF programmable pulse out feature) There are 5 LFOs (281s) all slightly different, and being clocked by more scaled down pulses from the MARF, so the LFOs are locked into the main set of pulses. The signal is split into several paths, one goes to the 277 delay (being modified by the same random voltage mentioned above) and the other going to the spring reverb, also being modified (by an LFO). These also go into 2 bandpass filters, being modulated with row 2 of the MARF. The stereo signal is being modified as well and the whole lot goes into the Buchla 100 signal leveller (model 172) and vintage eq (model 175)"

Piano and string tones, as the name suggests, and able to have both voices play at the same time with separate sustain controls.
Fully functional. The modulation is only for the string setting and gives a little bit of vibrato or tremolo. The split function is for mixing.
The built in case is in good shape, some scuffs, dings, and tears but protects the instrument very well."

Aquifex - Tenori-on live - Taiko Drum samples/Solo mode
video by SynthAddict
"Time stamps

Another fun Tenori-on live demo,Taiko samples played in live Solo mode (trk 16).
Drum samples were taken from this free pack:
https://www.subaqueousmusic.com/free-...
You can hear a few phasing issues with some samples as they play together - easy to fix and re-do later, adding a master reverb to the track would be an
easy way to blend the different samples with varying reverbs into a more cohesive mix.
The massive taiko drum (probably an Okedo-daiko) is a little hot here,
I would fix its level for a future take. :-)"

JUPITER-Xpert - Is This the End??! What's in the Box??!
video by Robert Saint John
"Well, it’s been fun. But the time has come for me to move on to bigger things...
Yes, I finally did it! I got the JUPITER-X.
I've been reassessing my studio and music needs, and I have sold off a lot of gear these past few weeks. The JUPITER-Xm has been my go-to synthesizer for 18 months now, but I wasn't using it with my big controller (Novation SL MkIII) any longer. This new JUPITER-X will take less space than the Xm and an unused controller in my studio. And the price on the X is great right now with a $300 rebate from Roland (until the end of June 2021). I continue to be pleased with the direction Roland has taken with X/Xm, so this will be a lifetime synth for me.
NO, the Xm is not really for sale. YES, I will be doing at least one video comparing the two; the workflow, advantages/disadvantages of each, and so on. It’s always bugged me that my Xm-based tutorials might be lost on X users, so I’d like to take some time to address that.
Longer-term I have something else in mind and, for that, it seems important to have both. Also, I've been deeply back into piano lessons and practice, and I decided that I wanted my favorite polysynth to have full-size keys after all.
I truly appreciate the support and interest, and hope to have exciting things to share soon!

One of a Kind EMS VCS4 Prototype to Make Post-Lockdown Debut This Year
You might remember the EMS VCS4 from this post back in March of 2020. It was scheduled to make an appearance last year but the event was postponed due to the pandemic. I beleive it is now slated to debute on June 25th this year. You can find details on the upcoming event here. Note it states the debut is on Friday, May 25, but today is Saturday, May 28, so that date is clearly wrong. June 25 lands on a Friday, so I'm guessing that is the date.
"The VCS4 prototype (a live performance model which combines two VCS3s with a ‘base station’ featuring keyboard, external audio input mixer, and signal processing inside a wooden cabinet) was built in 1969 - 1970, but was never brought into mass production. A second, but very different, VCS4 prototype is owned by Matt Black of Coldcut."
You can see Matt Black's VCS4 in this post from 2014.
There might have been a third VCS4 design, a follow-up design to the VCS3 you can find posted back in 2006.
This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

Self-paying on the Buchla 200
video by zack dagoba
"a self-playing patch, using some cybernetic elements:
Two VCOs (258) are cross modulated to produce an evolving sequence of clocks, not just random because the interactive nature of the cross modulation creates unexpected pauses and clusters - the envelope follower (model 230) helps in extracting the clocks. These are sent to an LPG which gates a modulating sound from the 259 - the main tone. The MARF sequences pitches, but these are shifted with a clocked random voltage, changing every 5 or 7 pulses (using the MARF programmable pulse out feature) There are 5 LFOs are all slightly different, and being clocked by more scaled down pulses from the MARF, so the LFOs are locked into the main set of pulses. The signal is split into several paths, one goes to the 277 delay (being modified by the same random voltage mentioned above) and the other going to the spring reverb, also being modified (by an LFO). These also go into 2 bandpass filters, being modulated with row 2 of the MARF. The stereo signal is being modified as well and the whole lot goes into the Buchla 100 signal leveller (model 172) and vintage eq (model 175)

Ambient Garden Jam on Battery Powered Mini Semi Modular
video by ChrisLody
"The incredibly cold and wet spring season we've had here in the UK seems to have finally given way to summer, so what a better way to make the most of the weather than a battery powered jam in the garden.
I've been building the rig in the video specifically to have something battery powered to jam and record on away from the studio but I was mostly thinking of writing on the sofa. But a few days ago we moved a sofa bed out of our cabin in the garden and it seems to have become garden furniture now, so this was a perfect place for a quick test of this setup.
It's perhaps not the best bit of music I've written but I had a few unexpected problems with my mini mixer being extremely quiet to begin which put me off my stride a bit. I ended up using the mixers mic inputs instead of line in which shouldn't have been necessary, but it works at least.
I'll make a vlog about the modular/semi modular 'Synth Tray' in a bit, but just quickly everything here is running on various rechargeable batteries and I'm using a Volca Modular, Bastl Kastle, Volca Beats (which I might replace with my Bastl Kastle Drum if it ever arrives....) Korg NTS1, Korg SQ1, Radio Shack Mixer, Korg SR1 'Sound on Sound' and a Suboos latern which has USB power to run the NTS1. There is a prototype board on there too but it wasn't used here. The reverb is provided by the Korg SR1 and the ambient sound is direct from my Sony HDR-CX240E and is played back dry. Molly the cat is on cable monitoring duties."

"An ultra rare mono synth from 1976! This often overlooked synth sounds great. It is capable of some really awesome early analogue sounds.
Only 100 units made, imagine how much left! It can make some weird noises largely due to it's retro-cool ring modulator.
You can also run external sounds through it.
It has two VCOs, two kinds of Ring Modulation, three kinds of Noise and the High Pass and Low Pass filter a featured on dual traveller sliders!
Oscillator Subtractive synthesis analog mono synthesizer with 2 VCO and portamento mode:
- VCO1: octave range from 64' to 2', tuning +/- 5 semitones, shapes triangle, square, saw, pulse, pulse with variable width. Also special external mode (see filter)
- VCO2: octave range from 16' to 1, tuning +/- 5 semitones, shapes saw, Ring modulator 1/2, Scale Noise, Pink Noise and White Noise.
FILTER The filter is analog (Traveler) allows flexible and sofisticated LPF, BPF and HPF with 'BRIGHT' which is the resonance.
ENVELOPE single EG generator "AR" Attack/Singing Level, the Range is based on 3 level presets
LFO Single delayed triangle modulator with variable depth and reaches a pretty high frequency for some FM modulation on pitch.
Also can acts as a simple VCA vibrato. It's got a fast envelope, auto bend, and LFO re-trigger too."

VAI 18 :Solina String Synthesizer
video by Vintage Audio Institute Italia
"One take just playing some chords on the Solina String Synthesizer - no over dubs.
Binson Echorec 2 is the effect source.
It looks like an inflated Solina String Ensemble.
Story goes that American ARP sent a bunch of keyboard-less monophonic ARP Explorers to Eminent in Holland in the mid 70's.
Eminent incorporated most of these synths in to a huge double manual living room-furniture organ that also included the Solina String Ensemble.
A small batch of ARP Explorers were left over and Eminent decided to make a limited, "lightweight" edition : A Solina String Ensemble combined with the ARP Explorer synthesizer.
Both fairly limited instruments on their own, the combination of a mono-synth and string machine make them become more than the sum of their parts.
Here in Italy there were many similar combos and the earliest one, The Farfisa Syntorchestra was released the same year, 1975.
Which one came first? We don't know, please use the comment section if you know the answer.
The possibility of routing the String Ensemble section into the ARP Explorer filter section is a great tool, the filter of the Explorer is great, adding the mono section vibrato to the string section as well.
There are some bewildering flaws with the Solina String Synthesizer, which makes us think that the production schedule was rather tight when these were made:
The ARP Explorer Section seems to emit a ticking noise in certain filter modes (we've confirmed this with other owners of this instrument)
There are no separate outputs for the String and Mono section (WHY?!)
The mono synth always engages the highest note when you play a chord, whereas on many of the Italian counterparts you can 'prioritise': choose if the Mono section will engage the highest or the lowest note in a chord."
