In honour of #DoctorWhoDay w/ a Raspberry Pi Zero

Published on Nov 23, 2017 Pi Synth

"As always, synthesized live on a Raspberry Pi Zero, featuring 10 simultaneous synths, 3 different synthesis models, audio and graphics captured real-time running on a £4 computer.

It's nice that the software still works - mine has a dreadful tendency to code rot if I look away for a few months. The visualisation is somewhat different since the last time I posted this - the texture that drives the colours is now computed rather than loaded, and as a result it's easier to tweak the visuals, so it all looks cooler and more electro-neon than it did before. The software now runs client/server. Synthesis is within a separate server application, the client is in charge of pushing MIDI into the server, and - unusually - pulling audio back. So the server knows nothing whatsoever about platform MIDI or audio capabilities. Visualisation is also done client-side. So the server does nothing except pull in commands and push out short blocks of synthesized audio."

80s synth-pop/Italo disco LIVE from the studio - Old school MIDI sequenced setup

Published on Nov 23, 2017 Espen Kraft

"- Never Let You Go

80s inspired synth-pop Italo Disco LIVE in the studio

Everything is played by hand and/or sequenced live. Nothing pre-recorded.

The Emax II bass in the verse and the underlying drum-loop in the verses are lifted/sampled from my own released version of this track. The track can be heard on my website:

https://www.espenkraft.com

Gear used:
Drums: E-MU ESI4000, Akai S1000, Roland TR-626 (sequenced for the most parts, some live playing in the bridge)

Bass: Roland S-10 (sequenced) and Emax II (live playing)

Synths: Roland D-550, Roland JX-8P, Roland Alpha Juno 2, Yamaha TX802. (all sequenced)
Emax & Korg DW-8000 (live playing)

Strymon BlueSky & TC flashback delay effects

Sequencer: Roland MC50 sequencer drives everything through a Opcode 128X MIDI patchbay

Drums, Bass, Synths are recorded through a Yamaha 01V digital mixer and piped optically into Audient ID4 and into Nuendo. From there I have 2 separated stereo tracks + two mono bass tracks ending up in Nuendo for further processing/mixing.
This gives me a much better chance of balancing the mix instead of having just a stereo track of everything without the possibility to adjust the separate “stems”.

My tracks pay homage to all synth-pop acts of the 80'ies like Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, OMD, Euryhmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha and many more.

A use mostly old gear in my music and among them Roland Juno 6, Alpha Juno 2, D550 and JX-8P.
Korg DW-8000, Elka EK22, Yamaha DX7 and TX802 and drum machines Yamaha RX11 and Roland TR-626.

Effects are usually handled by Strymon and TC electronics.

Sampling is done on my E-MU ESI-4000, Akai S1000, Roland S-10, Emax II."

'Up for auction is an ultra rare Roland 100m RYK M185 analogue sequencer.

This is an unused NOS module from the limited 2009 manufacture run of 20 units.
Serial number is 185015.

It has the latest, updated V3.1 firmware, which allows for a new split sequence
mode.

This is the original sequencer that Intellijel Metropolis and other clones are based upon.

It's layout and design are very similar to the Roland 182 sequencer, but with much
more added features.

- The knobs control the CV/pitch.
- The big swithces control step length in clock pulses, and
- The smaller switches select different gate modes [mute, single, repeated, legato].

Extra functions are accessed by holding the reset button for a few seconds:

- Programable per-step portamento
- New split sequence mode where the sequence can be split in two with different loop lengths for each section.

Module is tested and complete with original instruction leaflet, mounting screws & washers, and cable."

Luminist | Super Metroid: Resynthesized - Brinstar - Red Soil

Published on Nov 23, 2017 Luminist

Composed with the KROG MS20 Mini.

"Super Metroid has one of the best soundtracks of any videogame out there, so I decided it would be cool to recreate it in high fidelity using hardware synthesizers. Think of this as a sequel to the one I recreated last year. It's been a fun project and I hope you enjoy it!

When I started this project it was with the aim to license it legitimately
with Nintendo to sell the album on Bandcamp and other similar sites. Unfortunately at the last minute they blocked my licensing request, which means I'm not allowed to sell it. Unfortunate for me, because this project has taken literally hundreds of hours, but it's a plus for you because now you can get it for free! Download links will be at the bottom of this info.

There's one little setback - I originally planned to recreate the WHOLE soundtrack (notice the album title says Vol I) but at the moment unfortunately it looks like that will be pretty difficult. Time = money and I need to be able to afford to eat and stuff. Of course if people love these then I'll keep making them, it might just take longer :)

Weirdly, this licensing issue hasn't affected my original Metroid: Resynthesized project from last year, (I have no idea either, go figure) so if you'd like to support me please buy that one on itunes or google play, or grab my original music on Bandcamp :-)

Planar (Telharmonic, Clouds, TB-03)

Published on Nov 22, 2017 Tape Ghost

"My first video with a new modular I just built. I wanted to build a system that was desktop synth sized and was designed around a specific sound design goal. I wanted something with additive synthesis and that was excellent for drones, textures, and ambiences. The result is a 4U, 42HP system with Mutable Instruments Ears and Clouds, Make Noise Telharmonic as the voice, LXD for filtering and Low Pass Gate enveloping, 2HP VCA for vca duties, and some Pulp Logic tiles for LFOs, Envelops, Attenuation/Offset, and Mixing. The case is from Pulp Logic as well.

The patch in this video has the TB-03 running into the mixer on the modular, and the output of the mixer runs into the input on clouds. The Telharmonic noise out is going into the top LPG on the LXD, and it is being enveloped by the output signal of Ears, then the LXD output is sent to the mixer (thats how i get the snare drum sounds when i tap the case), the P output of the Telharmonic is sent to the other LPG on the LXD and the gate out on the TB-03 sends a gate to the Strike Input of the LXD. That output is then sent into the VCA to be scaled down to the volume level of the TB-03 and then sent into the mixer. The Telharmonic is in the Shift Register Mode, with the TB-03 gate being sent to the D-Gate, and the Degree is being swept by an LFO. There is also an LFO being sent to the Size on the Clouds to prevent Clouds from becoming too resonant. Output goes directly from Clouds stereo out to a Zoom H4N field Recorder. Only limiting was applied in post."

Xplorer - Oberheim Matrix-12/Xpander Editor Now Free

Available here

"An editor for the Oberheim Xpander and Matrix-12 synthesizers. That works.
Xplorer is a real-time and bi-directional software editor for the Oberheim Matrix-12 and Xpander synthesizers.

Xplorer is not just another generic synthesizer editor with ranges of slider controls that are all the same and don’t really tell you what you are doing.
Xplorer was developed by an Xpander owner for use by Xpander and Matrix-12 owners. With Xplorer you quickly get an overview of all parameters of a single patch, including an overview of the Modulation Matrix.

With Xplorer you can tweak the sound simultaneously using a computer mouse, a hardware MIDI controller, your DAW software, or directly on your Xpander or Matrix-12. Use the method you prefer to change the sound. Xplorer’s display shows you in real-time which parameter is currently being modified.

“Real-time and bi-directional” means that every change you make in Xplorer is reflected into the synthesizer memory with minimal latency, and vice-versa. Whether you change the sound parameters on the synthesizer, in Xplorer, or with a MIDI controller, the software and the synthesizer will simultaneously update the parameters of the sound, without needing to reload the patch into the synthesizer memory.

The main features of Xplorer are:

Single patch tone file load/save on disk
Extract single patches from an “all data data dump” SysEx file into a given folder
Get all single patches from synthesizer into a given folder.
All data dump request backup and restore (save and restore synthesizer whole memory to/from a sysex file)
Modification of the 226 parameters of a single patch
Real-time MIDI automation for all parameters with freely assignable control changes, even for filter modes (except Modulation Matrix)
Copy/paste page for TRACK, ENV, LFO, and RAMP pages (e.g., you can copy all ENV1 page parameters and paste them to ENV3)
Rename patch, go to patch, store patch, save patch to disk
Real-time update of all parameters when the user tweaks the synthesizer knobs (dual editing can be done without needing to reload the patch and resynchronize the synthesizer and the PC as most editors need to do)
Patch randomizer (generates a new patch from random values)
Auto-sized user interface depending on system’s default font size
…and more to come in the next releases."

"All the knobs and keys perform their intended functions, with a few knobs having some minor issues. The 1st oscillator knob has been broken off at some point (see photo), but is still turnable and works as it should. The cutoff frequency knob also has some issues as it seems to be a bit scratchy as well as having certain spots that cause the sound to cut out when rotating it. With a little effort, you can still get all the normal functionality out of it, but that pot may need to be replaced at some point if you want it to work perfectly. Other knobs may have had some of their values drift due to age and use, however we cannot be sure."

Spectral Arpeggiator: PC - MidiBox CV - Matrix Analog Synth

Published on Nov 22, 2017 Sbranvlztronics

"Simple patch presenting a 'Spectral Arpeggiator'.

In this video a PC running a MIDI sequencer sends data to a MidiBox CV converter, which then controls the Matrix synthesizer patch.

The master Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) determines the fundamental frequency, and the synced slave VCO is sweept for harmonics using very short notes. The slave VCO triangle output is sent to the Voltage Controlled Phaser, VCA and finnaly to the Voltage Controlled Delay. The wet/dry mix of the CV Delay is controled by midi velocity, CV Phaser cutoff freq. by a local LFO. Tweaking the ADSR potentiometers create some nice variation in the textures.

Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching.

In this version, the table is read with various lissajous figures (and with two-dimensional perlin noise near the end). The terrains are generated with various equations including chebyshev polynomials. Terrain A can be interpolated with terrain B.

The terrain readers are in harmonic series. Further development will include more interesting approaches for the behavior of terrain reading. Dynamic terrain modulation will also be explored.

Xaoc Tallin Dual Discrete Core VCA

Published on Nov 22, 2017 Xaoc Devices

"Tallin is a dual voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) with overdrive, offering some unusual control features and a range of attractive tonal characteristics. Each of the two identical channels offers two simultaneously available inputs for voltage control over signal attenuation or gain, with linear and exponential response to CV. Volume control knobs offer manual gain settings ranging from fully closed (-80dB) up to +18dB. A color LED indicator displays output signal levels. A soft-clip circuit avoids harsh clipping distortion, while a switchable overdrive circuit offers two carefully crafted distortion responses, simulating the sound of classic tube amplifiers. Since both CV inputs are simultaneously active, they can be jointly exploited within patches featuring more complex volume control that otherwise would require using two traditional VCAs in series. As the signal path is DC-coupled, Tallin can also be used for handling the control voltages."

Waldorf Wave & TSi Musikmesse Flyers From 1992 &1993

Scans for the following, in via swissdoc, have been added to yesterday's post on Waldorf at at the 1992 and 1993 Musikmesses.

Messe.1992.TSI.Messeinformation
Messe.1992.Preliminary.Wave.Info
Messe.1993.TSI.Show.Information
Messe.1993.Wave.Flyer

I believe this is the first time some, if not all, have appeared online. They include a flyer for the Waldorf Wave, a Preliminary Wave info sheet, and TSI Musikmesse flyers. TSi GmbH were the distributors for Waldorf. They later distributed Access Music and Novation as well. Wolfgang Düren, the chairman of Waldorf, was the man behind TSi. He partnered with PPG before Waldorf. See this post for some additional details on him.

You can find a handful of posts featuring TSi here.
