ARP Omni Mark I Synthesizer SN 24832650

Some heavy duty packing pics below.

"This Omni has been restored to full working order, and all of the official ARP Field Service fixes have been applied. Every single one of those craptastic blue tantalum capacitors have been replaced with brand new electrolytics. All failing or suspect IC’s have been changed, and a higher performance OTA (CA3046) has been used in the VCA. Don’t worry, this only improves noise and bleed through. All of the sliders have been broken apart, cleaned and re-lubed with Fader Grease. They travel nice and smooth. New rubber slider caps have been fitted to the slider controls in the synth section. The wood sides have been removed, sanded, restained, refinished, and rubbed into smooth luster.

This thing sounds awesome, and can produce some serious Joy Division, Cars, New Order, Kraftwerk and Disco. I’ve played and repaired many string synths and many Omni’s, and to me, nothing really compares to the Omni (I’ve grown to like it more than the Solina.)

It includes the strings that sound very similar to the famous Solina, and a polyphonic synth section with the ARP 4075 filter made famous by the Odyssey and the Quadra. The original 4075 suffered from a resistor miscalculation that resulted in a reduced filter sweep range (only to 12KHZ.) But don’t worry, this one has had the standard fix applied to restore the full filter range. And it sounds wonderful.

Also included on the Omni is a monophonic bass synth. The Omni 1 was unique in that the bass is routed through the 4075 filter. (The Omni 2 has a boring preset filter for the bass.) So, this thing can also produce big, usable, analog bass sounds.

And it’s fully polyphonic. Well actually, paraphonic…meaning the filter in the synth section is retriggered for all notes on each key press. This actually results in a chord pulsing effect that’s hard to produce on a standard poly synth. The strings of course don’t go through the filter, so that portion is full poly.

All functions work. Every key works. No ghost or drone keys are present that usually plague these units. And, you don’t have to worry about them ever cropping up like you would with a non-restored Omni. This thing looks and sounds great and is ready for the studio.

But, as good as it is, some there’s some things that were left alone, or only partially fixed. These are:

There are of course a few surface scratches on the metal case. No gigged instrument from the 70’s (or musician for that matter) is free from the scars of bad decisions on the road…

The Omni has a Pratt-Reed keyboard that would normally need new bushings. I couldn’t confirm that this had been previously serviced, but the keyboard on this thing is in excellent shape. It plays like a dream, and as you can see in the photos, the keys are very will aligned. (The obvious sign of worn out bushings are keys resting at grossly different heights, yielding a wavy keyboard. Take a look at some of the other Omni’s on Ebay and notice the wavey teeth! Not on this baby!) As such, the keyboard bushings were not replaced.

The Poly Synth buttons sometimes (not often but I want to mention everything!) trigger each other when pressing. This is a mechanical effect, not electronic. I choose not to replace these switches. You can no longer find this types of push buttons. In the past, if I have one that has failed completely, I drill out the existing button and fit a smaller tact switch inside. This allows the button to maintain its original look, but fixes its functionality. The problem with this, is that it gives the button a different “feel”. I like to keep things as original as possible, so I choose not to perform this service.

This instrument is wired up for 110volts. But the transformer can be set to 220v. If you want me to change this before shipping, let me know.

If you want an Omni that will look and sound at home in the studio, even a museum, this is the one for you..."

KORG INC and Noritake Co., Limited Release Innovative Vacuum Tube: the Nutube

This one made the rounds during NAMM but I initially skipped it as it is not directly synth related. It may however be of interest to synth DIYers.  The following is the press release from KORG.

"KORG INC and Noritake Co., Limited are proud to announce the successful development of the ground breaking technology, Nutube, a new miniaturized and high performance tube. In cooperation with Noritake Itron Corporation, KORG INC. has developed the Nutube to offer incredible reliability and efficiency while still generating the same rich harmonics which vacuum tubes are known for. The Nutube 6P1 featuring this innovation will be on display at the Korg USA Winter NAMM Booth.

KORG has used vacuum tubes for many years in products such as VOX-branded guitar amps and effect units, KORG-branded dance/DJ products such as the electribe MX/SX and keyboards such as the SV-1. Vacuum tubes have played a major role in shaping the sound of VOX and KORG products, and have been a crucial element in their distinctive character.

As with previous vacuum tubes, this newly-developed Nutube is structured with an anode, grid, and filament, and operates as a complete triode tube, generating the same rich harmonics that are distinctive of conventional vacuum tubes. By applying technology from Noritake Co., Limited's vacuum fluorescent displays, the structure of the vacuum tube has been modified, dramatically reducing its size and allowing it to consume less power. Production is carried out at the cutting-edge Japanese production facility of Noritake Itron, a subsidiary of Noritake Co., Limited., significantly raising the product quality in comparison to previous vacuum tubes by boasting the following features:

Power Consumption:
Miniaturization dramatically reduces power consumption, allowing the Nutube to operate using less than 2% of power required by conventional vacuum tubes and making it easy to power the unit on batteries.
Compact.:
The Nutube occupies less than 30% of the volume of a conventional vacuum tube. Its small size and low thermal output allows it to be easily mounted directly on a high-density circuit board without using a socket
High reliability and long life.:
The unique design and state of the art Japanese production facility ensures the Nutubes are built to the highest standard and offer up to 30,000 hours of continuous operating life. The high reliability means that it can be attached directly to the circuit board with confidence knowing that it will not need to be replaced regularly like a 12AX7.
About Nutube 6P1
"As an electronic component, a vacuum tube has the disadvantages of being larger than a transistor, having a shorter lifespan, and a higher power consumption, and although many people like the sound of a vacuum tube, historically they have been more difficult to deal with,” stated Fumio Mieda, KORG INC’s longstanding developer who was involved in numerous KORG synthesizers including the MS-20 which appeared in 1978. “The Nutube sets us free from these many limitations, making it possible for us to think about using it in new products,” added Mieda.

Most manufacturers stopped producing vacuum tubes in the 1970s and there haven’t been any notable advances in the field during the past fifty years. However, thanks to the Nutube 6P1, it is now easier to obtain a vacuum tube sound when amplifying musical instruments and other audio signals.

Noritake Itron Corporation, a group company of Noritake Co., Limited, pioneers of vacuum florescent displays says “By creating a miniaturized and high performance replacement for traditional vacuum tubes, Noritake Co. Limited expects products using the Nutube will create a renewed appreciation for the inherent qualities of vacuum tubes amongst users.”

The Nutube 6P1, currently being developed, takes advantage of KORG's experience in musical instrument production, and is tuned for optimal effect to generate rich harmonics when used with a musical instrument. Products using the Nutube are currently under development, with announcements expected during 2015. (Patent applied for.)"

A drum synth with sustain, sweep, tune and volume control.
The Syndrum is in good working condition. A couple of the pots can be just a little bit scratchy sometimes. (nothing major, I'm sure it can be solved with some cleaning if it bothers you)

Cosmetically, there are signs of wear here and there. The mesh has some stains(see photo).
The box itself has wear. ( it is 35 years old...). It still holds the 1980 price tag...
Overall in nice vintage condition."

Demo of Casio CZ-1 Sounds

Published on Feb 6, 2015

Demo starts at 2:41. Note Casio recently released the CZ synth engine for iPad: CZ App for iPad - CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD.

"WARNING! This is a run through of 64 sounds loaded into my Casio CZ-1 Phase Distortion Synthesizer. This is NOT an exciting video. More than half are presets from the instrument, and the rest are modified presets, and original patches. Nothing fabulous for patches, but it does give you a high resolution sound sampling of the CZ synth, which I happen to love (and unfortunately haven't done much with in the last 5 or 6 year).

I would suggest just letting it run in the background and listening to it, because there's nothing really to watch.

For me, the more unique patches this synth can cough up use the ring modulation and the fake resonant waves. It's a very unique synth that's fairly easy to program, and I FIRMLY believe had it been released before the Yamaha DX-7, there's a good chance it would have sold more units than the DX-7. It's just that much easier to program and capable of a wider variety of usable sounds. That being said, I'm still a big fan of FM synthesis, it's just not as "user friendly" as implemented by Yamaha's line of DX synths.

And lastly please excuse all the mediocre keyboard playing. I would say I play AROUND with keyboards...I don't actually play them! Cheers!"

Denver Synth Meet Set for March 14th

"Denver Synth Meet is a place for you to bring your favorite synth gear and share sounds and ideas with others. Think of it as a show and tell for synth enthusiasts! This year we focus on the hardware a bit more by giving incentives for you to bring both the gear you love and the gear you would like to sell or trade. Synth’s, drum machines, controllers, guitar pedals, modular modules and everything in between.

Synthesizers can captivate you at time of purchase and then end up unused, either because of a new purchase or a change in workflow. By bringing synth’s to the meet we all get a chance to explore individual possibilities and maybe hear different sounds and see different workflow’s in action.

The first part of the day (10AM to 5PM) will have manufacturer’s demonstrations as well as a DIY soldering class put on by Synthrotek. Buy – Sell – Trade – Promote will be in full swing. In the second part (5PM to 10PM) we relax down a bit and enjoy some local talented acts as well as liquid refreshment. Expect a fun day filled with blinky lights, patch cables, knobs and keys and friendly faces.

Early Bird ticket prices expire February 14th, so save a few bucks and purchase online now.

New Modor NF-1 Hardware Synth in the Works

"The Modor NF-1 synth is a digital DSP synth very comparable to the classic Virtual Analog synths, but Modor is moving further on from this point. We use the classic structure of VA-synths, with oscillators, filters and effects, with parameters that can be modulated using LFO's and envelopes. But every element has been retought and reinvented. In a digital way. The NF-1 has a classic 12dB/oct resonant filter, but we are also giving it a versatile formant filter, never seen in hardware before! It does make classic sawtooth waves, but we're also including a lot of other brand new modulatable noisy waveforms! It has a classic delay effect, but we make every parameter editable to give way to special unexpected effect types! And so on ...

Yes, it's digital and we're proud of it! We are making a very hands-on, laborious new synth having plenty of knobs and switches right on top of it to shape any sound parameter thats in it. Nothing to look up in menus!"

MFB Kraftzwerg Analog Semi-modular Desktop Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"MFB is the brainchild of Manfred Fricke, boutique analogue designer who has been running out of his Berlin HQ for many years now. This is his latest and greatest synth design, and it follows the MFB tradition of offering powerful but tiny synths for a very reasonable price.

Its small footprint is significant and, as far as analogues go, this might have highest feature to size ratio of any semi-modular synth out there. To give you an idea, the case is a couple of inches smaller than a copy of FM.

Inside you get a triple VCO, dual LFO, 24dB low-pass filter, VCA and dual ADHSR modules. Add 34 knobs, 13 switches and 37 patch points to the surface and a MIDI-CV converter to the back and you get a synth with loads of sonic potential.

Architecture
As the name suggests, in a semi-modular synth all the modules are connected internally, and it should be able to make noises without the need to do any patching. The patch points provide the opportunity to explore and experiment with the signal path and combine different modulation sources.

The modules are laid out from left to right. Dual LFOs are on the left, followed by the triple VCO and the low-pass filter in the middle. Next we have the VCA and on the far right is the dual ADHSR section.

To understand the normal signal flow, all you need to do is examine the patch points and their associated knobs up close. MIDI note messages are automatically converted to CV and Gate values. These are wired in to the oscillators and envelope sections so there is indeed no need to patch up anything to get a sound going.

Each of the three oscillators and the noise source has its own volume level – these route into the filter and on to the VCA. Turning the gain past five opens it up and gradually lets the sound through without triggering it with a volume envelope.

Envelope 1 is routed to CV cut on the filter. This is joined by a second CV input that uses a small pot to set the amount, and is normally linked to key-tracking.

Both LFOs have predefined functions – LFO 1 is assigned pitch modulation duties. It can be switched between all the oscillators or just OSC 3 and, as mentioned before, LFO 2 automatically goes to the VCA section.

Without any patch cables, there's plenty of room for tweaking, and the high contrast white on black labelling makes it easy to see what's going on. Even the knobs for the dual ADSR, which are quite close together, leave enough space for tweak-happy fingers."

"Here's the deal. The resonance filter cut out a couple days ago and most likely just needs to be re-soddered. That's it. Otherwise fully functional and installed with the amazing Social Entropy Quicksilver 303 Mod, which makes it just about as user-friendly as just about any step-based mono synth in existence. The mod also makes it fully MIDI-integrated. Check out social entropy's website for all the info on the mod.

If you're looking at this chances are you know this is a legendary synth with incredible sound. The box is 30+ years old, so it doesn't look brand new. But it has been serviced several times and other than the res filter the sound is perfect. Can't afford to invest more money in repairs right now and need a synth that's more gigging-friendly at the moment, otherwise I would absolutely hang on to this synth. Shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks tops to have a professional get the res filter working right, after which you will be left with the ultimate acid machine!"

Zed Synth for iOS - New Synth & Effect Processor for iPad & iPhone

Zed Synth Introduction Rik MaxSpeed Published on Feb 6, 2015

From the creator of Patch Morpher.

"The official introduction to Zed Synth, a hybrid physical modelling and virtual analogue synth for iPhone & iPad.

Demo soundtrack by Felix Sturmberger, produced entirely on the Zed Synth with no additional sounds, effects, reverbs, delays or samples."

iTunes: Zed Synth - Richard Meyer

"Have fun making music and creating amazing & unique sounds with this powerful synthesiser for iPhone & iPad.

Zed Synth is easy to learn, with live graphs throughout and built-in help for every knob, but it's a real powerhouse synth combining virtual analog synthesis with physical modelling. This innovative blend of technologies allows you to create rich and immersive sounds, ranging from bright electronic dance music patches to subtle and expressive solo instruments.

Zed Synth is also a unique audio effect processor: you can route external sounds through the synth and completely transform them: use the microphone and transform your voice, turn drum machines into strummed guitars, or radically transform the sound of any other Audiobus-compatible app!

Over 140 presets covering a wide range of styles provide a great starting point to making your own music. And you can easily share your patches with friends and other IOS musicians.

Key features:

- Wave-Shaping oscillators: inspired by 1950s vacuum-tube technology, 4 parameters allow you to create a vast array of original oscillator shapes which can be modulated in real-time.

- Physical Modelling: a sophisticated resonator can be either struck by a mallet or excited by the synth section (including external audio) with different forms of interaction to simulate blown, bowed or struck models.

- Unique Audio effect: the Zed Synth can process external audio via Audiobus and pass it through its string model. This unique effect can turn unpitched sounds, such as beats, into pitched sounds, akin to what you could do with a vocoder, only more responsively and with a much richer timbre. Using this approach, Zed Synth can radically transform the sound of any other Audiobus-compatible synth on IOS.

- A unique “Spring Box” effect capable of emulating the full 88-string sympathetic resonance of a piano soundboard, or simulating the body resonance of a musical instrument.

- Oscilloscopes throughout the user interface provide clear visual feedback and ease of use.

- Built-in Help system throughout the app to explain each of the modules and all the parameters.

- A Powerful Modulation system makes it incredibly easy to add modulations from a variety of sources to any of the synth’s parameters.

- The Granulator: a different take on the ubiquitous arpeggiator, the granulator can periodically or randomly retrigger the sound, and also vary the pitch. This makes it possible to create rhythmic chorded sounds with a human feel to them, or completely chaotic sounds like raindrops on a tin roof.

- Synth Overview displays the signal path and routing of the various modules, as well as making it easy to jump around sections when editing.

- Effects to further enhance the sound, including a stereo expander to enrich the spatial complexity of the signal.

- iPhone support: Zed Synth has been specially developed to run on both iPhones and iPads. Actual polyphony will depend on the speed of the device and older devices will not be able to recreate a full 88-string piano reverberation effect.

- Patch Sharing: Zed synth makes it easy to import & share patches with friends via e-mail.
