John Bowen Solaris Sound Demo

Published on Mar 31, 2020 Pure Ambient Drone
Update: Re-Published on Apr 28, 2020

https://johnbowen.com

"John Bowen Solaris Demo. No talking of some Solaris preset patches.

The general concept behind the John Bowen Solaris synthesizer is to implement something like a giant wall-sized modular system entirely in software where you can select among several completely different types of oscillators and filters, exquisitely modelled after the components culled from a variety of legendary vintage synthesizers of yesteryear and even some current virtual analog innovations of today. With up to four oscillators, four filters, four amplifiers, four four-input mixers, six envelope generators, one looping envelope generator, five LFOs, two vector mixers and still more of these software modules available in each program, the Solaris synthesizer becomes absolutely unrivalled in terms of versatility and programmability."

First jam on Elektron Cycles - SYSTEM OF THE TIMES: Model:Cycles & Korg NTS-1 #quarantune Impro

Published on Mar 31, 2020 Gary P Hayes

"Just got the Model:Cycles, so this is after a couple of hours getting under the hood (and there isn't a lot of complexity for sure) - I actually got this as a lightweight pair with my Analog Four mk2, for outdoor sessions, mainly so the drums & perhaps tuned percussion and some chords, can be done on this while the A4 sticks to sequences and bass.

For now a continuous 1st Jam / Impro on #Elektron #Model:Cycles - I used the NTS-1 because I was very keen on the delay and reverb control on the Cycles, just size and feedback and that's about it?

Rich Timbres with Simple Eurorack Modules - Live Synthesis Tutorial

Published on Mar 31, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"We will be livestreaming some tips and techniques for generating interesting sounds with dynamic harmonics with simple analog eurorack modules. This tutorial will be useful for beginner and intermediate modular as well as semi-modular and even fixed architecture synthesists. We will combine techniques considered “west coast” and “east coast” both adding and subtracting harmonics from basic oscillator shapes.

The techniques and concepts covered will include waveforms, heterodyning, sync, wavefolding, amplitude modulation, ring modulation, frequency modulation and filtering. All of these techniques can be controlled and modulated with envelopes, LFOs and even at audio rate. If you have questions you can ask them in the chat at the Q+A at the end of the presentation."

Maria Teriaeva - SØS (Official Video)

Published on Mar 31, 2020 Maria Teriaeva

“SØS” is taken from the forthcoming album “Conservatory of Flowers”.
Listen: https://bnd.lc/ConservatoryFlowers (out on April 17).

Strange things are happening in the science lab - here and there new objects appear. The exact settings of the universe are lost due to the unforeseen events in outer space. At the same time, Maria Teriaeva conducts musical experiments at her studio. The laboratory resonates with the studio. We do not know all the laws of the universe, and collapse can occur unexpectedly and in unpredictable forms. But anomalies are of particular interest to Maria Teriaeva.

This is the first video clip of the Moscow production studio SUPERBASIC.

Part of the clip was shot in the scientific experimental complex at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. The protagonist of this part is the scientist Mikhail Yuryevich Sotskiy. Mikhail publishes works in Acta Astronautica, and knows what to do if a trash ball flies to Earth.

Aphex Twin "Ageispolis" cover on Crudman Published on Jul 18, 2017

via this auction - pics and additional details further below.

"Crudman is a unique electronic musical instrument based around a cassette Walkman hacked so its speed can be accurately controlled in musical intervals with Midi and 1v/octave CV. Here a Crudman plays a melody and a bassline of a song you'll hopefully recognize, via a Midi file played in Ableton.

The tape in the video is of a sine wave tuned to middle C, and the audio is straight into a recording device with no pedals or effects or anything. Straight unprocessed sine wave is not the most compelling sound in itself but it gives the clearest possible demonstration of how the Crudman affects a sound. Likewise I don't expect or want customers using these to cover classic songs but its a fun way to show the capabilities of the thing.

I believe this is the first of these videos to feature most of the Crudman's 4 octave range. The top 2.5-3 octaves are extremely stable and accurate, usually to about +/-10 cents. The lowest 1 to 1.5 octaves, heard in the bassline in the middle here, are super wobbly and the lower you go the less stable the tuning is. If you look at the bassline with a tuning app (I use PanoTuner for iPhone) you'll see its way off, like over 50 cents, but for whatever reason it still sounds pretty much spot on."

The four sound sources are: 1) Pittsburgh Waveforms thru Dwarfcraft HAX, 2) Erica Black Wavetable VCO with wavetable morphing, 3) MI Rings thru Pittsburgh Crush & Chronoblob, 4) Basimilus Iteritas Alter. The mix goes to the Doepfer Wasp filter and then to Boss RV-6. Most of the modulation comes from Batumi."

PPG Wave 2.2

"This is one of my most prized and cared for possessions. If we weren't in the middle of an unprecedented financial crisis, I would prefer have this beauty buried with me. ;) It's the absolute king of wavetable synthesizers, the first and only of its kind if you ask me (and virtually anyone else who's had the privilege to use one). I've had this particular one for the better part of 20 years, and she's never let me down (unlike multiple new synths where I find myself flustered when firmware corrupts or memory erroneously wipes out); she's just been steadfast and true for her treasured time with me. Always kept in a non-smoking studio, voltage regulated and on battery backup. When I bought this beauty some 20 years ago I was under the impression the previous owner had a good working relationship with PPG when they were still in business and this was one of the first editions in circulation. This beauty was exported to the UK and found a home with one of the curators of the early 2000 (UK) PPG Conferences. With the help and guidance of PPG connoisseur, H. Seib, she was gone through with a fine tooth comb and had been swapped out with new bushings, keys and factory formatted. Since my acquisition of this unit (3rd owner by my understanding) I had created and sculpted custom waves with the Waveterm A (When it still functioned, but sadly that is now a very distant memory) and a wide range of factory sounds which are still in place. I had considered the upgrade to V8.3 to save much of the library I had created but wouldn't attempt it without the expertise and assistance of a few friends in Toronto who had years of experience working on these, but sadly that never did come to fruition. Time is always the greatest enemy, isn't she? ;) I also have the entire factory soundset from the floppy disk of the 2.3, Waveterm A and B as well as many wavetables shared on the old PPG forum so the update would probably be worth it. It's a fairly easy upgrade and still available to purchase if you're considering using the SYSEX features of V8.3. There was discussion some years ago about a virtual waveterm being available at some point (Waveterm C), perhaps a gentle nudge in the PPG discussion forum and it will eventually materialize with those DIY monowaves. ;) Until then, I leave you with one of the worlds finest synthesizers ever imagined. This is the stuff dreams are made of, not kidding. Serious inquiries only, thanks!

Funny enough, the guy I bought this one from lived in San Jose, which is just a few miles from where the Gleeman brothers were producing their synths. He told me that the one we have was originally a black one, but when they came out with the clear one, he had them retrofit it into a clear one, so he could wear it as a keytar and walk around with it on stage."

Modal Electronics Argon8 Polyphonic Wavetable Synthesizer

Published on Mar 30, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Modal's Argon8 is an expressive polyphonic synthesizer that brings wavetable synthesis to a new generation of users. Capable of the cold, nostalgic tones of classic wavetable synths as well as distinctly futuristic timbres, the Argon8 provides an impressive punch for the price.

Argon8's wavetables are were carefully sculpted to provide access to a wide variety of sounds from classic analog-style techniques to esoteric, algorithmically-generated, glitchy sounds. With four oscillators per voice, extensive wave shaping and audio modulation options, a morphing resonant filter, and three stereo effect engines, Argon8 will do everything from smooth, slippery bass lines to crackling atmospheric textures.

All this combined with an eight-slot modulation matrix, velocity and aftertouch-capable keybed, and 512-note sequencer makes the Argon8 an uncommonly flexible tool for exploring the timbral universe of wavetable synthesis."

ThreeTom Steve's MS-22 PCB/Panel Back in Stock + Covid19 Update

via ThreeTom Modular

"Good news! The delivery gods have graced me with a new shipment of Steve’s MS-22 PCB/panel sets. I’m also happy to say that these new PCB’s now sport a fancy nickel gold plating, which should lead to even easier SMT soldering than before. Even though the current batch is a bit larger than the previous one, please know there already were some pre-orders. If you want one (or more), don’t wait too long before ordering! :)

In other news, I’m sure you’ve noticed there’s currently a world-wide pandemic going on. This has some impact on shipping :In addition to the PCB/panel set, I’m now also offering the required knobs and switches, saving you some time (and shipping costs) sourcing these very specific components.

Bpost has currently suspended all shipments going out of the EU.
DPD seems mostly fine for now, with some hickups in France, Spain and Italy
Because of the above, some Threetom orders may be delayed. If this is the case for your order, I’ll keep you posted (pun intended) on when I can ship. For all shipments by Bpost, please assume at least 4 weeks of delay. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this.

Stay safe and healthy my friends!

Sequarallel TRAX Tracker: SHIFT

Published on Mar 30, 2020 freshnelly

"This short video demonstrates the TRAX (using #2) Tracker's Shift feature, shifting individual lanes and inadvertantly Recording in a short progression via MIDI. Shift rotates all notes in a selected lane with each click of the encoder.

The Shift can be used in conjunction with "SKIP" to only shift every 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. step. As it destructively updates the sequence, changing the SKIP setting and re-shifting can jumble the orders up with surprising results!

Shift can be used to shift all lanes together, and possibly using the RANGE parameter to only shift within a certain area (TBD)

This can be achieved now by simply changing the Start/End parameters found further down the QB pop-up SHIFT is in."

Some info on the Upcoming Buchla Modules (100, 200, and Easel)

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child, on muffs.

Post by Eric Fox of Buchla U.S.A. You can find a recent interview with Eric Fox here.

"Hey everyone!

I appreciate the interest in what it is we’re working on. Although I don’t spend too much time on the forum, with all of the announcements and imminent release of Easel Commands into the wild it is probably a good idea for me to poke my head up once in awhile :)
Let’s see if I can quickly shed some light on a few things:

Easel vs Easel Command- When I refer to a “full” Easel, I am indeed referring to the classic configuration of some form of 208+218+Case. Just like what we did with the 208C, the 218 and case needs to be updated in order to make them better, more consistent, and have the ability to scale production based on demand. We’re actively working on these and hopefully I can make an official announcement with details this summer.

Easel Preset Manager- Joel, Darren, and Charles are now working on this one. Those guys are the masters at this stuff, so I’m gonna hopefully have the official rundown of what all it can do soon. While it will be different physically than iProgram Card, it’s my understanding that the the new UX from a software angle might be able to be an update for the iProgram card. I’ll stop talking now about it since those guys will yell at me for not knowing what I’m talking about. We’ll make a clear announcement about this soon :)

200 and 100 reissues- These full-size recreations are being headed up by Jon Nenson (The Human Comparator) and our own in-house designer, Charles Seeholzer. We were planning on having (5) 200 models to show off at SB. These certainly won’t be the only 200’s we offer... but it’s a little difficult to launch 20+ models all at the same time! We insist on making them as good as they can be. Otherwise, what’s the point? Releasing a handful at a time just makes the most sense so that each model can get the proper attention they deserve. If you don’t see your favorite one in this first run, just know that it will probably not be that far behind. Patience young grasshoppers.

Clones vs Official- To clarify, the point I’m trying to make is in regards to not wanting someone to think poorly of any brand based on the possibility that they are playing with a shitty, poorly built, corner-cutting diy project from god knows where. Please don’t confuse that statement with the fact that I know there absolutely are quality builds out there that do a great job of really capturing the true spirit of the original design. I’m friends with a lot of those who are considered some of the best at doing this and that’s why I choose to partner with them when possible. I know that I have the best resources out of anyone to do this right including involving actual people who were there alongside Don when these were being developed. If Buchla can offer a consistently high-quality official version that comes with full warranty/support and it helps support some of the “Associates” who were there with Don... seems like that’s the right way to do it. No shade being thrown at those using quality built products intended.

Who is “Dave”?- All I’ll say is that it is being renamed to “Don’s Barber Shop” as per the request of some of those who were closest with Don.

I hope I didn’t create more questions than answers! If there is a real pressing question you need answered, just hit me up directly and I’ll do my best to answer with the best available info I have and feel free to share my responses with the rest of the class :)

Thanks for your passion. Stay safe+sanitary+sane
-Eric Fox"

In this Roland Jupiter-8 demo I go through a few patches featuring LFO and pitch modulation, oscillator cross-modulation, as well as white noise textures and soundscapes.

The Roland Jupiter 8 an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer from Roland which was released in the early 1980s. The Jupiter-8 was Roland's flagship synth at the time, and features discrete analog circuitry including 2 VCOs, 2 LFOs, a 12/24fb LPF, HPF, 2 ADSR envelopes, osc sync and cross-mod, portamento and arpeggiator.

The Jupiter-8 has a sweet analog sound, a colorful and inviting front panel layout, and is an all around versatile analog synthesizer. The Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer has attained legendary synth status and has been used by countless musicians and has been played on many hit songs over the years. The Jupiter 8 commands very high prices on the second hand market these days.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
DPM V2 - Digitech Obscura - Alesis Ampliton - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

"Imaginando brings us an impressive combination of granular and traditional synthesis in a powerhouse combination. This video is a bit unlike others in this series. Due to the complexity of FRMS, I didn't try going into this with a clear plan. I just wanted to document the sound design process. Which honestly turned into a train wreck that lasted over an hour. I've done some aggressive editing on this to bring it down to less than 30 minutes.

I think it still retains all of the essential information. I hope it reveals that the process of creating a patch doesn't always go smoothly, but if you take your time and explore you will be rewarded! I love the final result!
