New dsp-Halo From DSP Synthesizers in the Works - mini 2GB SSD DIY Poly Sampler Synthesizer

Mini is an understatement. On the heals of the success of the dsp-G1 with Adafruit, DSP Synthesizers is working on a new 2 by 2.8 cm 2GB mini DIY polyphonic sampler synthesizer.

Via Jan, the man behind DSP Synthesizers:

"The follow up on the successful dsp-G1 chip is a great DIY Gigasampler. Measuring 2 by 2.8 cm it has 2GB samplestorage on Micro-SD SSD, playable over MIDI.

Yes, That is over 13h of samplestorage.  Storing all of its samples on the 2GB replaceable micro-SD it can take a new setup just by replacing the card. All in a 28-DIP pin space. Breadboard/Solder whatever.

This will be the coolest ever DIY Synthesizer/Sampler.

Most of the sampleplayers out there does a have bad implementation of playing triggered samples. This one plays MIDI keyboard notes straight from a 2GB SD card.

Polyphonic! All in a tiny DIY DIP solder package. It is definitely the coolest DIY pack to own. /Jan"

"Here's something you don't see every day! An all original, 1981 Vintage E-MU Systems Emulator I Sampling keyboard! Ultra rare, #440 of only 500 ever made.

This is an original 8 voice version with MIDI(via the DB25 port)! Since it is a late one it has all the final enhancements.

Fully working, and serviced for sale which included stripping, cleaning and re-bushing the entire keybed.

Comes with a selection of sample disks, operation software disks and various other essential programs. All disks work and the disk drive is fully operational and very reliable. Manual also included.

Physically, overall it is excellent conditon, a few scratches and marks to the steel case but no dents or damage. It wouldn't be difficult to touch these in should you want to make it absolutely mint. The control panels and keys are in exceptional condition.

Sonically as a sampler these things sound amazingly rich, better in my opinon than the Emulator II which I also own. Yes, the Emulator II has more features..but the original Emulator wins on the sound I'm afraid..nothing beats it!

Prominet users of the Emulator I include New Order, Genesis, Stevie Wonder to name but a few :)"

Crumar Trilogy

"The Trilogy has some of the most beautiful analogue strings you will hear and a full synthesiser section which can be mixed with the strings to create stunning analogue soundscapes. There is also an organ section which can also be mixed with the other sections for big analogue stacks of sound.
This Trilogy is in very good cosmetic condition with all buttons present, all sliders work as they should and all dials turn smoothly with no static noise etc - There is some very minor blemish to the wooden end cheeks, but they are still in very good condition.
The real gem of this synth is without a doubt the rich and vibrant analogue strings and the lovely synth section.

A couple of the keys do not work on the synth section, but work on the strings and organ fine - Once you stack the sounds you can hardly notice that a couple of keys do not play the synth part - I think this would be an easy fix for someone who likes to dabble in old synths, but the synth is totally usable as is and I mention it to be totally honest..."

Nyle Steiner Documentary In the Works

via Analogue Realities

"Nyle came by today, which is always a treat. The occasion was there is a documentary being made about him and his life. Part of that life crossed mine and so I got to be a small part, too. When the documentary is finished, I'll post a link if it's allowed. It was a lot of fun. Nyle played his EVI hooked into my Synthasystem. Then, Nyle (and I) played around with it having fun (mostly Nyle tweaking the knobs). The photo on top is just a sort of long shot while the crew was setting up lights. The one at the bottom is Nyle himself in front of my Synthasystem."

Analogue Realities worked closely with Nyle Steiner on bringing back the Stiener Synthasystem to DIY and eurorocack.

Todd Barton's Buchla Release "ausprobieren" Now Available

"This is a brief album of brief pieces. In literature I am drawn to short forms, especially those of Jorges Luis Borges and Italo Calvino. In poetry: haiku.

Here are thirteen short analog synthesizer explorations created over a three week period of experimenting with a small Buchla 200e Electric Music Box.

For those interested in the modules, here they are: 266e, 259e, 261e, 281e, 292e, 291e, 285e, 206e, 222e

All the vignettes are self-generating patches. All the etudes are layered, mixed and manipulated from various self-generating pieces using Logic Express and various echo, delay and reverb plug-ins, mainly SoundToys and 2C-Aether.
The Buchla 200e is an amazingly deep, complex, and sensitive instrument. These little experiments are only my personal glimpse into the Buchla universe.

To hear other uses and sonic revelations in the world of the Buchla 200e please search the internet for works by Richard Lainhart, Alessandro Cortini, Giorgio Sancristoforo, Charles Cohen, Don Hassler, Joe Pascarell, and of course Don and Ezra Buchla to name just a few.

Enjoy!

Ploytec produces fanciful firmware update for its super-small synthesizers

"SCHOPFHEIM, GERMANY: hardware and software developer Ploytec is proud to introduce its latest (V2.1) firmware update for its πλ2 MIDI- and πλ2 Leukos USB-powered, super-small footprint, software editing-enabled duophonic synthesizers at Musikmesse 2015, January 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany...

The synth world was, quite frankly, taken aback by something so small sounding so huge when Ploytec’s ‘playful’ πλ2 made its impressive musical debut last year. This MIDI-powered, super-small synthesizer — with a super-small footprint fit for fitting into the smallest spaces — was soon joined by its USB-powered, super-small sibling, πλ2 Leukos, seriously satisfying those with a hardware craving to make music while on the move, wherever their inspiration might (literally) take them — with or without eminently portable laptops or an Apple iPad — with Camera Connection Kit — in tow (though these are always helpful to have at hand to power πλ2 Leukos, of course). Without wishing to sound silly, surely it’s impossible not to be impressed? It’s a knockout concept, after all!

As implied by their shared PI L Squared alternative appellation, πλ2 and πλ2 Leukos generally stick to the principals of subtractive synthesis, whereby the working waveform — bred by two square wave (pulse) oscillators — then travels through an adjustable — lowpass, high-pass, and bandpass — digital filter stage to transform the frequency spectrum and/or raise resonance, if desired. Digital filtering duly dispensed, an additional analogue lowpass filter follows forthwith. Destructive, digital-like tones balanced by all-the-rage analogue warmth are available at the press of a key. Could there be more? More than likely. Moreover, in fact, an analogue saturation stage at the output offers dynamic compression, adding a respectable bass punch to the proceedings — perfect for those that need to make some Boom! shake-shake-shake the room-style noise!

But beneath those tiny black (πλ2) and white (πλ2 Leukos) square-shaped exteriors — living in perfect harmony with Ploytec’s PI L Squared alternative appellation — lie a wonderful world of options for further sound-sculpting and manipulative performance possibilities, like LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelope, plus play modes to make music performance more playful, whatever your musical leanings — LFO and envelope speed synchronise automatically to an external MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) clock, whereby both πλ2 and πλ2"

Modified Moog Realistic MG1 DEMO

Published on Apr 16, 2015 Lackan110f

"The old Moog Realistic MG1 is a great little synth, superior to the Moog Rogue in my opinion. But it has a number of shortcomings, which all are rather easy to modify.

I have added a sustain pot, overdrive, PW/PWM, FM, LFO speed, low octave, poly vibrato among other things. This turns the rather inexpensive MG1 to a real good alternative to just about any other vintage mono synth out there, for half the price."

"The SBF has 5 modes appropriately named “Flanger I”, “Flanger II”, “Flanger III”, and a Chorus mode that is part-for-part the closest thing you can get to the famous Juno choruses.

It has cool front and back panel inputs for both channels, it has phase invert for both channels (to get some nice swirly action going) and a CV in to control the frequency of the pitch externally (great for Eurorack modular setups!). This external control is another of those unique and creative features that make this box rock.

Flanger I is summed mono and sounds great. Flanger II is the stereo flange and sounds better, and Flanger III is a cross-feed flanger that sounds even better. You can run one sound in/out in stereo, or run two separate in's to get two different output signals. It's like having two flangers or two choruses in one box."

Two pics of the inside below.

"Made out of laser-cut silver acrylic, it features a decidedly retro 8-bit font face on the front panel. The engravings have been painstakingly filled with nacré white paint (with an added touch of yellow for the logo). The front panel is gently slanted for increased comfort and ease of use. Flat-top LEDs (in yellow and amber) have been used for a perfect “flat” finish of the front panel, and rubberized knobs provide a very pleasant touch. The LCD is a double-FSTN, LED-backlit negative amber-on-black one. Everything has been made to ensure no eyestrain and perfect legibility of the controls in all lighting conditions.

This quick description should already be a cause for excessive salivation, but there’s more! :D

Inside this beauty lie four MOS 8580 and four MOS 6581, each carefully selected and paired for optimal stereo results and overall balance. It gives you the best of both worlds! All components are high quality (Alps tactile switches and rotary encoders, Neutrik plugs, Bourns resistors, ST and Microchip ICs, Kingbright LEDs, etc), and sourced from single batches for consistency. The BC547 output transistors are even NOS! A silent fan is used, derated from its original 12V to ca. 7V for added quietness. Last but not least: the unit runs out of a single (universal) 12V DC power supply.

The case features no other screws than the ones used to fasten the circuit boards, and these are mounted flush. The bottom casing has been welded with acetone, while the front panel is held tight by suitably snug notches. All bolted parts feature locking washers to ensure a tight fit that will not loosen in time.

This machine has been built with great care, and is meant to last. It’s the result of several months of work, from the designing, prototyping, components sourcing, testing and selection (in particular the SIDs, which were singled from a larger number of candidates). It’s been such an amount of work that I will not build another one, as such, this is a unique piece."

This one comes recommended from MATRIXSYNTH reader Brian Comnes:

"For sitting in the big chair, this is 99 cents worth of fun, try it with animoog...especially if you can get wireless audio out to your better speakers (I use AirPlay in my home cinema set up)

Ok it's not an easel, but some iOS synths can really wake you up, and it's $3999 cheaper"

iTunes: Breathless MIDI Controller - Vinicius Mello

"Breathless MIDI Controller is a new kind of musical instrument with a simple fingering system that uses three fingers of each hand, but that achieves a range of four octaves, from G2 to G6. The fingering is familiar to recorder, flute or sax players, the main difference is that octave change is done by moving the iPad forward. Another big difference is that you do not blow, but the lateral movement changes the expression (assignable to CC7, CC2, Breath Controller or Channel Pressure).

"MESSE 2015: AIRA Modular Customizer More in the software editor"

When the first teasers of the new Aira modules went up I speculated that there might be one module that morphed into whatever you loaded into it much like the System-1. It turned out there are four distinct modules, the Demora, Scooper, Torcido, and Bitrazer. Well, it now appears that you will be able customize each module by loading additional modules into them.  According to this presentation, you will be able load up to 6 modules into each Aira module. There are currently 15 module types to chose from, and more will follow.  If you look closely you will see modules for the following: Sample & Hold, Ring Mod, Filter 6db, Filter 12db, Tone, Amp, Mixer, Stereo Mixer, Curve Conv, Gate Divider, Trig to Delay Time CV, and MIDI Clock to Gate.  You can also save patch routing.

New KORG Electribe Sampler

Short Musikmesse floor video below. Curious how this compares to the "Electribe 2".

The Electribe 2 has "409 oscillator waveforms include analog modeling and PCM. The analog modeling synth engine provides a broad variety ranging from simple basic waveforms to complex combinations such as dual, unison, sync, ring modulation, and cross modulation. The PCM sound engine provides mainly rhythm sounds, but also covers multisamples for keyboard. (collaborations with Sample Magic, Loopmasters, Prime Loops are included)"

In addition to sampling, on the Electribe Sampler "there are also several types of analog modeling sound engines that are great for creating synth basses and pad sounds. There can be up to a total of 999 preset and user samples, and a maximum of 270 seconds of sampling time (calculated as monaural) can be used. The unit is shipped with numerous drum, rhythm/phrase loops, and hit samples included. (collaborations with Sample Magic, Loopmasters, Prime Loops are included)"

It appears the difference might be PCM on the Electribe 2 vs. Sampling on the Electribe Sampler.

"Sample your inner sound
The electribe series lets you play back your carefully constructed patterns while using intuitive operations to add spice and reveal new sonic possibilities. Approximately ten years after the Electribe SX first went on sale, there's now a new sampler in the electribe series that's designed to be simple and easy for the beginner to understand, and even more enjoyable for previous electribe users.

The electribe perfectly fulfills two tasks that both demand speed: live performance and music production

The electribe sampler featuring KORG's latest technology
The electribe sampler has been reborn with cutting-edge technology inherited from popular KORG products such as the KingKORG, kaossilator, kaoss pad, and taktile. The internal memory lets you save 250 patterns, including preset patterns which are perfect for today's dance music scene. There's also support for the polyphonic playback that’s indispensable for styles that include complex chord progressions, such as House music.

Intuitive beat making with the Trigger pads and Touch pad
Familiar from the kaossilator is the "touch scale" function that lets anyone perform without wrong notes, just by moving a finger across the touch pad. The trigger pads that were popular on the taktile are also provided, making it easy for anyone to create phrases intuitively. The trigger pads can also be used for drum input. Settings allow you to switch velocity on/off.

A hybrid synth engine with sampling and modeling
KORG created a synth engine for the electribe sampler that's perfectly designed to maximize your creativity.

In addition to a sampler sound engine that lets you use your own unique and original sounds (samples), there are also several types of analog modeling sound engines that are great for creating synth basses and pad sounds. There can be up to a total of 999 preset and user samples, and a maximum of 270 seconds of sampling time (calculated as monaural) can be used. The unit is shipped with numerous drum, rhythm/phrase loops, and hit samples included. (collaborations with Sample Magic, Loopmasters, Prime Loops are included)

Modulation can make sound-creation more complicated, but we've made it easy by condensing it down to three parameters: simply select a template that specifies an effect and its target, and then adjust the speed and depth of the effect to suit your taste.

Advanced use of samples with Time Slice and Resampling functions
The "Time Slice" function detects attacks within the phrase and slices it appropriately, allowing you to play the phrase at the desired tempo without significantly affecting the sound. Sounds within a sliced part can also be used separately by assigning them to steps or parts. You can even apply an effect to a sample, and then resample it while using the knobs to vary the pitch or modulation."

"I have been to the Frankfurt Musikmesse and had the chance to play a little bit around with the Korg electribe sampler. So bear with me this is not a really complete video but it is good to get a feeling for this great machine. The electribe sampler is really powerful and has so much under the hood that cannot be shown in 3 minutes."

Boomstar Modular - Grainy Clam-It - Take 2

via Studio Electronics

"GRAINY CLAMP-IT (Cookin' in the Kitchen with Grainy!)

GRAINY CLAMP-IT is a granular and phase modulated additive oscillator—brand new heavy territory for Studio Electronics... we know; wait till you hear the stunning contrast it creates when paired with our discrete Class-A OSCILLATION module, and the inorganic to downright 1970's combo organy / CS-80-ish tones it can generate. Pure voltage-controlled candy. Be sure to wash off the sticky...

Best to break Granny Clampett's namesake down in stages, and time travel a bit.

First Stage - Additive mixing of 4 harmonics using one of 16 waveforms, and one of 16 combinations of harmonics.

Second Stage - Granular or phase modulated mixing of the signal from the first stage, with a sync option.

Back to the First Stage - Additive section with selection of 16 different combinations of harmonics. The harmonics can be based on a sinewave or on one of 15 other waveforms. There's a separate control for mixing the selected harmonics.

Back to the Second Stage - The second processing stage allows granular processing or phase distortion. Granular processing gives you control over grain length and grain position, and can produce sync, detune, and wave sequencing effects. Phase distortion allows the signal from stage one to "look up" non-linearly, and can produce thick detune sounds and wildly varying pitch/timbre effects.
