Ep43 - Spotlight: TIPTOP/BUCHLA

video upload by Modular World

"BUCHLA FOR THE PEOPLE!
Gur Milstein (TipTop), is working with Buchla under the consultation of Todd Barton to reissue the legendary 200 system from the early 70's. The best part--the modules are affordable.
I know Don Buchla would be very proud to see the kind of legacy that he has left behind if it means that more people could afford to touch his creations.

Modular World will always stand with stories about people, and the passions that push them to stand out. Gur Milstein (TipTop) told me that working with Don's old schematics to recreate these designs has been the greatest honor of his professional life. Yes.

Grab your popcorn and have a seat. With 18 performances and two amazing interviews, this is going to be good."

Desire: Master Yamaha CS50 Sound FX Techniques

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"Yamaha CS50 Sounds FX including Modulation Resonance & Sound FX

The ultimate guide to the Yamaha CS50 - Famous Sounds, Programming
CS50 - Full Video Demo inc Programming & Factory Presets

Recorded at Greystoke Studio - Dry. Feb 2024

I have done some price comparisons for the following synths:-

Yamaha CS50 - Price new - 1977 - £2,119
£2,119 converts to £11,850 in 2024
Second Hand price paid January 2024 - £4,000

Yamaha CS80 - Price new - 1977 - £4,950
£4950 converts to £27,682 in 2024
Second Hand price paid Sept 2022 - £32,500

I think I got a bargain with the CS50!

The CS-50 was released just ahead of its famous big brothers, the CS-60 and CS-80. The CS-50 looks like a scaled-down version of the monstrous CS-80, and it is! This will benefit those who crave the famous classic Yamaha synth sound without the struggle of lugging around the 215 pound CS-80!

The CS-50 weighs in at about 100 pounds. The CS-50 is also just 4-voice polyphonic, and lacks the quality weighted 61-note keyboard of the CS-80. The CS-50 has just a 49-note standard keyboard. It does feature pressure (aftertouch) sensitivity route-able to several destinations, however.

The CS-50's sound is unmistakably related to other classic CS-series synthesizers. At just four voices with one osc. per voice and lacking warm filters (at just 12dB/oct) the CS-50's sound can be thin.

There are 13 preset sounds of various instruments and synth sounds but, unfortunately, no on-board memory storage for your edited presets. At its low street price, the CS-50 makes a great way to get your hands on these classic sounds without going broke! It's too bad their tuning is just as unstable as the other CS-series synths.

It's housed in a built-in travel-case like the other (big) CS-synths. It's been used by
Men Without Hats and Herbie Hancock."

Elektron Digitakt II: 3 New Features We're Loving - Comb Filter, Stretch Machine and Performance Kit

video upload by Group Technologies Australasia

"Elektron Digitakt II is here and its only been a hot minute since we received this powerful little groovebox sampler. Elektron have managed to pack a stack of great new features that we are making our way through and having too much fun with. In this video we go through 3 new features that have piqued our interest in the short time we've had it.

1. Comb Filter — Elektron have added more filters in the way of FLTR Machines, where one chooses the type of filter they want per track. There are 5 to choose from with the Comb filter sounding amazing and a first for an Elektron box. Comb filter can twist the timbre and transform any sound into something totally new, foreign, or alien like. Throw any sound through the Comb filter and you'll have fun seeing and hearing how far you can take it. Great for sound designers wanting metallic type sounds with rich resonant overtones.

FLTR Machines have 5 different filter types to choose from; Multi-Mode, where you can morph from Lowpass to Bandpass to Highpass filter. EQ, is a parametric equalizer for some precision filtering. Lowpass 4 is a 4-pole lowpass filter with a 24 dB slope for that extra bite. Legacy is the filter from the original Digitakt switchable between lowpass and highpass. The Comb filter has that metallic sound, pitch tuned and crazy resonant overtones as demonstrated in this video.

Similarly on other Elektron boxes, one chooses a 'machine' that relates to the type of synth engine you assign per track. Although here Elektron have adopted that method for different filters. This is a smart way to manage a number of new filters and parameters specific to those filters.

2. Stretch Machine — Elektron have added a new sample playback engine, Stretch machine that allows samples and loops to automatically stretch to the tempo of your pattern/project. It's a granular engine that works extremely well and a feature many Digitakt users have been craving!

3. Performance Kit Mode — here you can make changes to the parameters of a saved kit over several patterns and then smoothly recall the kit and continue jamming. Think of it as an 'undo' function for your sounds and kits. The Digitakt II can also save 1024 kits, so there plenty of flexibility to tweak your kits whilst performing and not be worried about losing the great kits you've created.

There's way more to explore on the new Digitakt II such as 3x LFOs, 128 steps per pattern, the assignable Control All Config, 4x Trig Modes, Euclidean Sequencer and much more. And did someone mention the audio fidelity, outstanding! We'll have more on the Digitakt II real soon.

Moog One - It's diversity is not a myth!

video upload by

"Patches will be available at https://www.orano.co.uk/shop or http://www.synthsounds.co.uk

It's always a pleasure to jump on and start to program or should i say "pilot" this beauty. The diversity of the Moog ONE is outstanding, again I put it through its paces to see how close it could get to the OB6 Broken EP patch, and remarkably it copes very well. With the added bonus of having dual filters and running them in series, it can yield some great results! and similar results to the SEM like sound.

Synth 1 - is the Broken EP sound
Synth 2 & 3 - Binaural Pad

anyway, thought I would share this one.

enjoy!

EMW Introduces NOISE CINEMA "innovative Eurorack module designed to transcend traditional boundaries"

"Step into a landscape of new sounds with our NOISE CINEMA, an innovative Eurorack module designed to transcend traditional boundaries. This module offers synthesizer enthusiasts the unique ability to shape and manipulate noise, creating atmospheres that capture the essence of imaginary scenes and intense experiences.

With NOISE CINEMA, every adjustment is a journey to the heart of sound, where noise becomes the protagonist of your soundtrack. From soft whispers to tumultuous sonic storms, the possibilities are limitless. Equipped with intuitive controls such as Morph, which smoothly transitions between 10 noise atmospheres, continuous or envelope modes, sample rate reduction, a special tone control, and a digital delay, this module allows for detailed and deep exploration of sound textures.

Ideal for musicians, producers, and sound designers seeking to expand their creative horizons, NOISE CINEMA is more than a module—it's a gateway to a world where sound shapes vision and emotion. Turn noises into narratives, atmospheres into adventures, and the ordinary into the extraordinary.

PolyPulse: ambient with FM and reverb

video upload by Lambda Synthetics

"Hey 💛, I'm working on assignable per-voice modulation and I recorded a quick jam with the FM sound engine and a few modulators.

In this video you can hear a basic FM patch with a modulator and a carrier. I've assigned an LFO to the modulator's ratio, and I've assigned a random number generator (that triggers on the start of a note) to the FM amount.

I'm manually triggering notes on the built-in keyboard and with my right hand I'm changing the LFO frequency and depth. Due to the random number generator assigned to the FM amount, each voice has a different random FM amount resulting in notes with a brighter and darker timbre. The sound engine is then passed through the PolyPulses built-in reverb with a good amount of decay!

Superbooth 2024 is almost upon us. Come see and play with the PolyPulse yourself at booth Z250!"

TUTORIAL / STEP 8 and SELECT 2 for a sequence with 1 random step

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"In a previous patch walkthrough video I said that there's a way to create a sequnce with STEP 8 but use SELECT 2 (and COMPARE 2) to make one (or more) of those steps random. This is the tutorial video to watch if you want to find out how to do exactly that.

I hope you find it inspiring.

Tip: combined with the technique explained in the following video you can really create interesting harmonic changes for one or several voices in a patch, with a touch of random so you can easily afk without anyone ever knowing:"

PATCH WALKTHROUGH / STEP 8 / doing a lot of 'sequency' things with just one sequencer

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"It's something that I find myself doing often: making a short sequcence, then transposing it every x amount of steps while using the cv that's transposing the lot as a pitch source for a bassline (works great for a chord generator as well). STEP 8 is a wonderful tool for this as it gives us both a sequence and cv for transposing and a way to randomize the progression within set boundaries. That - amongst other things - is what this video is about."

For the stereo patches the sound source is the Infrasonic Audio Warp Core, while for the mono patches the sound source is a simple sawtooth wave from our Rottnest analog VCO. The Marsupial is being modulated by a single Infinite Machinery ADSR, which is also modulating the gain level through a transparent VCA. No external fx or compression are applied."

Dark jam with the Ableton Push 3 Standalone and Novation AFX Station

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

This is the fourth track I've made specifically for the Push 3, and the first where I've used Ableton Live to make the entirety of the song. Some of Live 12's new features, like the generative sequencer tools, can be a fun way to get quickly inspired. I still miss many aspects of Reason when working in Live, but it's fun to change things up.

Kudos to the amazing Novation AFX Station. This synth has a fantastic panel, is a great size (not too big, not too small), two levels of drive/distortion, two filter options, great either clean or gritty, excellent resonance on the filter, etc. The more I use it, the more I love it. It's been around for 11 years, and there are more expensive mono synths, but I'd reach for this one before most for something dark and interesting.

I'm either 40 or 50 percent through this particular album/set and really happy with the music so far. The Push 3 really allows me to create songs in a way that no other setup has allowed. And while there are many features I wish it had (especially more on the side of performance), I'm finding myself happier and happier thinking of it as my live-set device. Can't wait to take these songs on the road.

Ableton Push 3 — most sounds, effects, and performance
Novation AFX Station — mono synth melody/lead thing

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Special Announcement from Make Noise!

PrssPnt theme music by Sam!

"The PrssPnt music synthesizer module is a controller in which several signals are generated by touching the printed copper wire at the bottom of the instrument. Touching PrssPnt, you become part of the circuit, generating a total of four simultaneous signals (two CV, two Gate).

The basic function of PrssPnt will be familiar to anyone who has used Pressure Points or 0-CTRL. It could be seen as a single “souped-up” channel of one of these devices. Since it is a single channel, the tuned voltage outputs are not relevant, and instead are replaced with more playable sensitivity controls and alternate pressure and gate outputs.

• Momentary Gate output remains high as long as it is being pressed
• Toggled Gate output goes high and low with each successive press of the plate: press it to make it go high, press it again to make it go low
• Pressure output generates a positive control signal proportional to the amount of Pressure applied, further tailored by the Sensitivity Panel Control
• Smooth Touch Function recreates the useful patch of sending a Pressure Output through a carefully tuned slew limiter for extended function generation
• Turning up the Slew amount will allow for larger than life functions with very long decay to be generated by hand.
• All four outputs available simultaneously

"The Ch. Svr music synthesizer module is a small utility module, offering several channels of signal-processing that will be useful in just about any modular system. As a condensation/extension of the sum/offset/attenuversion aspects of MATHS, it continues the great tradition of sculpting the control signals we use to sculpt our sound signals.

• Scale, amplify, attenuate, or invert an incoming signal using Channels 1 or 2
• Generate DC offsets when Channel 1 or 2 is unpatched
• Crossfade between two signals, or attenuate one signal, using Channel 3
• SUM and INVerted Sum Bus for addition, subtraction, mirroring, inversion etc.
• Individual Channel Outputs for Channels 1 and 2 allow independent use of all three channels
• Anywhere you need more subtle modulation, Ch. Svr is there for you… now all your eurorack slivers may have subtle and intentional modulation they deserve!

Designing A Case For Percussion // Eurorack with SP404 & Digitakt

video upload by Michael Manning

"My new album: https://sovnrecords.bandcamp.com/albu...

In this video I talk through my process of using a small ALM 52hp Eurorack Case to expand my percussion options within a setup. It is driven via a Digitakt which feeds into an African rhythm derived trigger module. Everything is then fed into an SP404.

This is the basis for my attempt at creating and performing live music. In the future I hope to show more developments into this process and eventually film a live set for this channel."

"𝑨 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒂𝒔𝒕, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆...
The future rests on the past, and the popularization of the sounds of the 80s and 90s today is a natural phenomenon. But what if you preserve the taste and style of those good times, but add a modern look, quality and wide modulation capabilities? The result will be a fresh sound, which is presented in the new soundset for DUNE3!

In this soundset, LFO Store’s leading sound designer, Otto K. Schwarz, has prepared some beautiful analog bass sequences, stylized drum sections, a wide variety of bright lead instruments and plucks, warm pads and other interesting sound solutions! All the presets come with advanced modulation techniques - with modulation wheel, velocity and expression assigned, which allows you to modulate and customize the sounds deeply, to the needs of your own musical works.

These sounds are suitable for both studio work and live performances, and may be used in the different styles of music - ambient, cinematic, electronic dance music and so on. Prepare yourself for the new discoveries and insights!"

MIDI TOOLS VOLUME ONE by Philip Meyer

video uploads by Isotonik Studios

AVAILABLE HERE: https://isotonikstudios.com/product/midi-tools-by-philip-meyer/

"This is a collection of 12 devices for making rhythmic music in Ableton Live 12. They are some of the first Max for Live MIDI Tools, which is a new class of Live device that generates and transforms MIDI clips.

I’ve always liked to make complex rhythmic music, but in the past I found the piano roll in Live to be clunky and tedious to use. MIDI Tools resolve this problem by allowing us to create simple devices that automate processes that would be tedious or impossible to execute manually. Every device in this collection is designed to help you make exciting, novel rhythmic music quickly and playfully.

The 'quickly and playfully' is really important to me. For me, making electronic music has always been about getting a pattern running, listening to it, then tweaking it with whatever knobs and sliders are available to me. Working this way puts you in a sort of dialog with the machine, where you’re acting, then listening, then acting, then listening, and so forth. This process works best when the cycles are fast, which means that the tools have to be fun and easy to use. They have to deliver results quickly.

I could summarize the practical value of these tools with three statements:

They generate ideas to get my creativity flowing

They all you to create rhythms (such as nested rhythms, rallentandos, and polyrhythms) that are very difficult to create using the piano roll interface

They help you create variations on rhythmic and melodic ideas, to make your music varied and interesting. I’ve also found that the power of these devices really emerges when you use them in serial workflows. By this I mean that you start with some initial MIDI (maybe from a Generator, or maybe not), then process the MIDI with several different transformers.

You can see an example of a serial process in THIS VIDEO, in which I create some rhythmic containers using the Blocks generator, then used the Divs transformer to subdivide those containers to create a new rhythm, then used Feel to dial in the groove. There’s tons of ways to mix and match the devices, which means lots of space to develop your own favorite approaches.

These devices all work with Ableton 12’s new Scales feature. When a scale is enabled on the MIDI clip, the device will only produce notes that are in key. If you disable the scale, then you can work chromatically. The devices are also aware of Live’s themes, so your devices will always match the look and feel of your Live set."

Nonconformist Controllable Crunch // Neutral Labs Elmyra2

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Dirty, crunch, experimental and lo-fi spring to mind once you start playing with this.. It can be more gentle, but its character is definitely happier on dark side (ironic as I got the new white version).

The Elmyra2 from Neutral Labs is a 4 voice wavetable eurorack semi modular synth with a grungy delay, multimode filter and a circuit bending along filter.... what's not to like!

In this I make a few demo tracks exploring different ways to play it.. from simply using the touch pads, to triggering from drums. outputs and a sequencer and playing via CV and Gate from the Keystep as well as using the internal sequencer.

Lots to play with, and hours of meditative pleasure tweaking to perfection.

"Minimoog voyager 10th anniversary gold edition. This Moog is an enigma…please read on to uncover the details. Here’s what I know. What it is: The electronics are the 10th anniversary gold plated edition. Everything about it indicates that is the case. It has the lighted blue logo on the back and all the earmarkings of the gold plated edition released in 2012. What I don’t know: Why is it in a white ash case? Never seen another like it. Usually, the synth came in a dark case with an anniversary plaque. I have tried to obtain information from Moog but didn’t get far. The synth has a Moog serial number plate on the case however Moog was unable to provide any additional information. The unit functions beautifully and it’s super clean. Comes with custom heavy duty cover. I do not have any paperwork (manual etc.) nor do I have the original box.Includes an AC cord."

RIP Mike Pinder of The Moody Blues & Streetly Electronics' Mellotron

video upload by Beat-Club

I heard the news on Marty Willson-Piper's Music of the Daze.

Mike Pinder was the keyboard player and a founding member of The Moody Blues. Prior to that he worked on the manufacturing of the first Mellotrons in the UK. According to mellotronics.com, "Streetly Electronics are the original UK manufacturer of mellotrons and world experts in the instrument."

via Wikipedia:

"Between 1962-63 Pinder worked for 18 months as an engineer at Streetly Electronics, in Streetly, Birmingham, a factory manufacturing the first models of Mellotron in the UK.

In May 1964 Pinder left Streetly Electronics to co-found The Moody Blues with Ray Thomas, Denny Laine, Clint Warwick and Graeme Edge."

His impact becomes clear when you read the following from Music of the Daze:

"This from my friend Nicklas Barker, guitarist, singer and composer from Swedish proggers Anekdoten. He is also a connoisseur of the Mellotron:

'Very sad, imagine if he had not started working at the Mellotron factory and done something else before joining The Moody Blues and introducing the glorious Mellotron string sound to a wider audience through Nights in White Satin. What would have happened then? No King Crimson? He was also friends with John Lennon and introduced the Mellotron to him. No Strawberry Fields? Mike Pinder was the first, and the impact of his use of the Mellotron changed music history. He was also the greatest Mellotron player ever. Just listen to Out and In from To Our Children’s Children’s Children. He was the wizard of the astral orchestra.'"

Update via Atomic Shadow:

"Here's the Moody's live on French TV. You can really see/hear what Mike Pinder contributed to the sound of that band. Without him and the MK 2, they would have just been another guitar band. It's startling how much they sounded like the records live!"

Entanglement

video upload by Martin Peters

"I have been noodling away on the guitar for quite a while now. Looking for new inspiration and musical insights. Doing this I sort of neglecting the synthesizers. I barely touched them since our last Beyond Berlin concert on E-Day in April 2023. In Januari I bought the Behringer Victor module and came up with this music. Last Thursday I switched the synths on again and the music was still in the Cirklon. I added some bits and recorded the music. What you see is the second take because in the first take the Minimoog solo's were not good enough.
It starts with a sequence on the Behringer Victor. Then the bass from the Synthesizers.com modular comes in. After that sequences from the Rob Hordijk OSC HRM, Oberheim SEM, Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, Korg Opsix and DSI Mopho are added. Strings are from the Waldorf Q Keyboard and the solo's from the Moog Minimoog."

"Monkey is a pocket sized Bluetooth MIDI keyboard. It has several built in unique MIDI effects, a drum machine and a looper. Each of the effects is equiped with 10 different algorithms. Monkey is optimised for low latency and low power consumption, enabling several months of usage without changing the battery. It connects to lots of hosts including macOS, OP-1F, ipadOS, Windows and Android.

We believe Bluetooth has great unutilized potential. But we can not tap into this without making Bluetooth very easy and practical to use, and providing high reliability. Monkey is our first product which taps into this. From our perspective we don't see a bunch of Bluetooth-centric MIDI devices on the market. This is the core idea from where Monkey originates from: lets make a device which only connects via Bluetooth and explore which new form factors and workflows spores out of this idea."
