New Spectra Mirror 23B Eurorack Module from Circuit Shaman

"The SPECTRA MIRROR is a resonant down-sampler tailored for use as a low pass gate. Incoming audio can be completely attenuated or passed through unaffected by modulating the sampling frequency, width of the sampling clock or the on board through-zero VCA. Each control voltage input can be attenuverted, allowing the user to sculpt response to CV. The "morph" output allows for CV control of the mode of the sampler, transitioning smoothly between traditional down-sampling and "high-pass sampling," which attenuated signals below the sampling frequency."

Circuit Shaman Eurorack Expanders for the Music Thing Turing Machine

Bytes Expander

Update: looks like the above link is dead. The original link went to www.circuitshaman.com, which now goes to www.mysticcircuits.com.

"The Bytes loop length expander allows your Music Thing Turing Machine to create random loops and melodies in any musical time signature. Breaking free from the constraints of 8 and 16 steps, with the addition of the Bytes Expander your Turing Machine will be able to create loops of any length from 1 to 16 and alter that length with a control voltage. Say goodbye to Kraftwerk and hello to Coltrane.

With the use of two separate length controls it makes it easy to change the Turing Machine's time signature in a musically useful way. For example, set the lower control to '6' and the upper control to '12' and you can easily double-time your loop. The CV-selector switch and attenuverter allow for some control to tame incoming CV, setting the selector switch to either side makes it so that CV only affects one of the length controls, allowing for one length to be your "solo" mode and the other to be your "repetitive" mode.

The Bytes expander attaches to your Turing Machine through the "gates" expander port and via 2 jumper wires that connect to the original Turing Machine PCB. As such, the Turing Machine PCB requires a small amount of modification to be able to work with the Bytes Expander. What is for sale is both the expander itself and the service of upgrading your Turing Machine. Send me your unit and I will do all the hard work for you."

Bytes Turing Machine Loop Length expander explained
Published on Nov 25, 2014 Circuit Shaman

"Here I go through the basics of the Bytes expander and give a couple of examples of how I use it."

Below is the Music Thing Rainbow Turing Machine build from Circuit Shaman with Bytes next to it.

"The Rainbow Turing Machine (Originally by Tom Whitwell of Music thing) is a random voltage loop generator for Eurorack modular synthesizers. It is useful for creating melodies and modulation with a variable amount of randomness. This particular module comes with all of the available Turing Machine expanders and uses different colored LEDs in every way possible. The colored LEDs serve a practical purpose as well as an aesthetic one since the color of each bit is coordinated to the main display across all of the expanders."

Published on Apr 24, 2014 wind spirit

"Did you say that there isn't enough color in your modular? Well this modules uses just about every color of LED available (that would be safe for your eye.)"

Switches Expander

"SWITCHES is an expander that turns your Turing Machine into a sequential switch. Its set of 8 switches are summed together to 4 different outputs. Two switching methods are used: the top four "clean" switches use a high-precision switching chip and the bottom four "dirty" switches use vactrols for some extra character. Bi-directional switching is possible through use of an upcoming multi-purpose expander."

via Music Thing Modular

And finally the Vert expander.

"VERT is an 8-bit digital to analog converter with an internal clock, allowing a CV signal to be converted to 8 gates. Unipolar or bipolar input signals can be selected by a switch to cover the entire range of conversion. The internal oscillator has a range switch to select between audio and LFO range as well as an attenuator for the FM input. An expansion port on the back allows the Vert to connect to any Turing Machine expander, allowing new functionality to be added in the future. The onboard LEDs come in 8-color rainbow or a single color of your choosing. A trim pot accessible from the front panel allows the LEDs to be dimmed to the preferred level of brightness."

Nova Musik - Pittsburg Modular Synthesizers Foundation 3.1+ with Richard Nicol at NAMM 2015

Published on Jan 26, 2015 Nova Musik

"Check out great deals on the Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers Foundation 3.1+ at Nova Musik: http://www.novamusik.com/modular/euro...

Richard Nicol from Pittsburgh Modular gives us an overview of the new Foundation 3.1+ expandable, complete voice analog modular synthesizer, which comes with an extra 104hp of expansion space for more modules.

The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer is the expandable version of a classic. A standalone, fully modular synthesizer styled after the great monosynths of the past, the Foundation 3.1+ has no hardwired signal path or fixed voice architecture to restrict creativity. An all analog signal path driving massive oscillators and multiple filters pushes the Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer to new worlds of musical creativity. An unpatched Foundation 3.1+ offers a clean slate for sonic exploration and sound design, and the open format of a modular synthesizer allows for greater control and a deeper understanding of synthesis.

The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer is designed to function as a standalone instrument. However, the Foundation 3.1+ is a 100% eurorack compatible modular synthesizer. The system is made up of 13 individual eurorack format synthesizer modules which can be removed, reorganized, and replaced with Pittsburgh Modular or other eurorack compatible modules. The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer uses the Pittsburgh Modular Move [208] Black Case and Power Rail to house and power the modules."

GOLT! Basic Acid Patch, Modular Synthesizer

Published on Jan 25, 2015 GOLT Modular

"I finally finished my Eurorack modular synth and home made sequencer!

It's a 32 Step Trigger sequencer that synchronises to MIDI and is linked to a 16 Step CV / Gate sequencer.

I thought the best way to celebrate was with some spontaneous ACID! This is the first time I really got to use the modular, so the patch is fairly simple; Seq - Quantizer - RS95E - VCF303 - Manhattan Analog VCA - A199. I didn't even bother tuning the oscillators or even using an Envelope Generator. The Envelope came from the VCF303 Decay / Env Out.

The drums came from the Jomox XBASE 888 which I absolutely love. The 888 main out L was bought into the modular via the Doepfer A-199 and then filtered with the A-106-5 SEM Type VCF in LP/HP mode. The 4MS PEG provided the modulation for the filter.

Hope you like it."

"This week Phase84 from Retronyms

Phase84 is a next generation phase distortion synthesizer. It fuses gritty digital sounds with traditional analog punch.

Phase84 is what's known as a Phase Distortion synthesizer. This form of waveshaping synthesis has its roots in Casio’s brilliant CZ line of digital synthesizers from the 80s. It is designed to have the warmth of a subtractive (analog) synthesizer, yet be capable of the squelchy tones and sharp attacks of an FM synth. Phase84 in particular can create warm pads, glitchy sounds, dirty basses, filthy sweeps, screaming leads, and anything in-between."

This began as me just experimenting with my heavily moded Remco Sound FX Machine with an added CV input talking to my eurorack for the first time. After a bit of playing things evolved into this and I kinda liked it... so I decided to record it and share it with you good people.

This was created using only Eurorack other than my CV controlled Remco Sound FX Machine and an Eventide Space reverb pedal.

Rough Patch explanation: So the master clock is a Delptronics Triggerman running 7 different sequences. Most of the tracks are being sent off to random modules for different clock divisions. One track from the Triggerman is triggering side 2 of a Make Noise Maths MK1 which is controlling the VCA on one channel of a Cwejman MX4S mixer which has channel 2 of the DPO running in creating the Kick/Bass drum. The higher melodic reverbed pad sounds are coming from the Qubit Nebulae which is shuffling through various chord I played on my Roland Juno 60. This is then run into the Make Noise Erbe Verb to change up the character a bit. The high pitched squeals and sweeping non-melodic squelches are coming from my Remco Sound FX machine that has been moded to have a CV in as well as some other cool tricks and expanded voice capabilities. The Melodic part that comes in at 2:40 is an Analogue Solutions Vostok MK1 using all 3 oscillators and is being sequenced by the Audio Damage Sequencer 1. The Vostok is being run into the Eventide Space reverb to add some stereo depth to the mix. There are 2 snare drums running: One is the Tiptop Audio SD808 and the other is from the Mutable Instruments Braids running the newest OS adding incredibly flexible and pitch-able 808 sounds. The "high hat" sounds were created by running the noise source from the Vostok into the Malekko Borg 2 filter and is being triggered by the Triggerman. Some of the strange chaotic noises were created by running a Make Noise Mysteron sequenced by a Make Noise Rene into a Make Noise Echophon and then into the Make Noise Phonogene set to the constant record mode... Tons of parameters are being tweaked by multiple modules for the highest level of unpredictability and variation. Other noises "cymbal style" compliments of The Harvestman Piston Honda MK1 run into one side of a Double Andore MK1 to create some more hat style sounds. Microbe Modular Equation Composer added some other weird blips and bloops as well percussion sounds. Microbe Modular Equation Composer is being modulated by the Modcan QuadLFO. Mungo Enterprises g0 expanded with Macro Machines Storage Strip is mangling some of the drum sounds in this patch too... I think thats about it :)

Thanks!! And as always, THANKS FOR LISTENING!"

Korg Volca Keys C64 SID Chip Emulation Arpeggios

Published on Jan 26, 2015 Tony Horgan

"An experiment in recreating Commodore 64-style arpeggios on the Korg Volca Keys. Audio is straight into a camcorder, sorry about the clipping on the Volca Beats. The basic arpeggio sound is created by setting the LFO to "square" (hold FUNC and press key M6), then turn the LFO RATE dial to about 3 o'clock and the PITCH INT knob to 12 o'clock or more. In this video I'm using the internal delay effect on the Volca Keys and mixing the Keys and Beats with a Belkin Rockstar, then recording audio from the Rockstar into the camcorder. No other equipment was used."
