Sequential Pro 3 Synthesizer at Winter NAMM 2020

Published on Jan 16, 2020 Reverb

"Legendary synth building Dave Smith is at it again with the new Sequential Pro 3. Taking over where the Pro One and Pro 2 left off, the Pro 3 eschews the all digital oscillators of those two synths and instead goes for a hybrid analog/digital oscillator set with mono and paraphonic capabilities. Combined with 16 channel sequencer and three different filter settings, the Pro 3 has controls in spades."

NAMM 2020 Viscount Legend '70s Stage Piano w/ Swappable Front Panels

Published on Jan 16, 2020 Kraft Music

Don't miss the demo of the modular front panel.  This is interesting.  New modules may come in time. I really love the idea of this - a customizable hardware synth not restricted by panel layout. Sleeper hit from NAMM? Imagine if Roland did this for all of their vintage synth models. Imagine a Jupiter-X or Xm with swappable hardware controls. No more having to mentally map synth engines to front panel controls - you just swap out the real panels and arrange them however you like. It would allow you to explore vintage synth engines as they were originally designed for a more authentic experience. Size would be a factor of course... Regardless, this is an interesting design worth some consideration.

"Save money with Bundles and get a great deal on your next Viscount instrument with Kraft Music!

In the new Legend '70s line, Viscount offers a unique range of digital pianos with a vintage aesthetic. Designed to let the musician customize their instrument, these digital pianos feature tops composed of single modules (17x8 cm) that can be assembled and dismantled, allowing pianists to create the instrument that best suits their needs and tastes. The Legend '70s line offers two sizes: the 73-key Legend '70s Compact (starting at $2,290), weighing 35 pounds, and the 88-key Legend '70s Artist (starting at $2,560), weighing 42 pounds. There is also an 88-key edition with a wooden keyboard, the Legend '70s Artist W (starting at $3,060), at the same weight. All models come with a free editor that makes it easy to modify parameters and settings."

Update: pics and additional details via Viscount:

"The new LEGEND '70s offers an unprecedented ability to customize your instrument with several Sound Modules equipped with state-of-the-art Sound Generators, including physical modeling. The Modules can be easily positioned and swapped on the front panel, according to your personal musical needs.

Currently the following modules are available to enhance the piano, while others will be available in the future in “Always Growing” family."

There is a Sound Collection module not pictured separately with the others below. You can see it with the numerical display on the right in the group shot. It has High Definition Sampling (HDS) with Pad, Strings, Choir, Brass, Keyboard, Organ, Bass, Guitar, Bells, Marimba and Other sounds, and 128 note polyphony.

There is also an E.Piano in the group pic instead of the CLAVI below. It features 5 Rhodes models, 2 Wurlis, and an Electric Grand.

NAMM 2020 - Korg MS 20 FS Full Size

Published on Jan 16, 2020 Kraft Music

"Shop for great deals and save money with bundles on your next Korg Synthesizer!

The MS-20 played a vital role KORG’s history as a synthesizer brand. Even after sales of the original, released in the late 70’s, came to an end, KORG has carried on the MS-20 tradition in a mini-sized reissue, a software synthesizer plugin, and even a kit version. These were driven by Korg's pride in their synthesizer heritage, their understanding of its historical significance, their responsibility to faithfully carry on the analog circuit technology that they've developed over the years, and their desire to pass on its generation-spanning sound to the future.

And now, Korg has resumed production of a completely assembled full-size MS-20, which had in 2014 been produced only in very small numbers as a kit. But in addition to faithfully recreating the sound, feel, and analog circuitry, this full-size reissue will consist of limited numbers of four different powder-coated color variations: khaki (KHAKI), white (WHITE), metallic blue (MBLUE), and black (BLACK).

This MS-20 FS is the genuine MS-20 made by KORG, faithful to the original in every way. Today, 40 years after first appearing in 1978, musicians hungry for this absolutely timeless sound can hear the genuine analog power of the MS-20."

How do YOU sound with Waves OVox?
How to Produce Unique Vocal Effects: Getting Started with OVox

Transform your vocal productions with the next-generation voice-controlled synth and vocal effects processor. Create a limitless palette of vocal morphing, tuning, harmonizing, vocoder & talkbox effects and beyond, with depth, clarity, and intuitive control. Available as a plugin or standalone app.

Limitless Vocal Palette

Producers, mixers, songwriters: Say goodbye to boring vocals. OVox gives you an unprecedented menu of vocal synthesis and reshaping options, from the Daft Punk-style vocoder sounds you know and love, to inventive vocal effects as endless as your creativity.

The Magic Under the Hood: Organic ReSynthesis®

OVox is powered by Waves Organic ReSynthesis® (ORS) technology to deliver its unmatched vocal synthesis sound quality.

ORS takes the original vocal signal and breaks it down to its core ‘DNA’ elements—amplitude, pitch, and formant. It then re-synthesizes these elements to create the new vocal sound, which is free of unwanted artifacts and preserves the expressiveness of the original vocal.

Intuitive Control

OVox is instant: no routing required. Simply insert it as a plugin or fire it up as a standalone app – sing, hum, speak or beatbox into it, and hear the magic happen.

MIDI control is optional. You can use OVox with a keyboard or MIDI controller, or with any instrument (for example a guitar) as the ‘carrier.’ Or you can simply use your voice (or a recorded vocal track) to trigger automatic chords, harmonies or scales, using OVox’s automatic Note Mapper.

Pick from Hundreds of Presets – or Dive Deep

Start with hundreds of satisfying presets, then tweak them using the most crucial controls displayed in OVox’s Main View.

Want to dive deeper? Open up OVox’s Expanded View, which unlocks a world of vocal morphing possibilities, including detailed Formant Filter control; nine LFO, ADSR and ORS modulators that can modulate any other control in the plugin; on-board FX; and much more.

The Ultimate Instrument Is You

The human voice is the original instrument—the richest in expression and the fullest in color. OVox turns your vocal—any vocal—into an even more limitless musical playground for you to express your creativity."

NAMM 2020: Sequential Pro 3

Published on Jan 16, 2020 CatSynth TV
Update: Re-Uploaded due to a technical glitch with the original.

"We talk with Jerry from Sequential about the new Pro 3, an impressive synthesizer with 3 oscillators and 3 filter types.

For more information, please visit

Sequential has announced the Pro 3, a new flagship mono/paraphonic synthesizer. A hybrid instrument, the Pro 3 features three classic analog filters (Prophet-6, OB-6, and ladder) and three oscillators (two VCOs and one wavetable oscillator) along with a powerful new 16-track sequencer, and the ability to connect with modular synths through its four control voltage ins/outs.

“In many ways the Pro 3 is the evolution of a concept that started with the classic Sequential Circuits Pro-One,” said Sequential founder Dave Smith: “Pack as much power as possible into a compact footprint and make it sound awesome. To do that, we built on the strengths of its modern-day counterpart, the Pro 2, and created a worthy successor to both that sets a new benchmark for raw power and versatility.”

Part of this sonic versatility comes from the Pro 3’s oscillators: Two voltage controlled oscillators provide traditional triangle, saw, and pulse waves with waveshaping, while a third digital wavetable oscillator provides 32 tables of 16 waves each with wave morphing. Three vintage-style filters shape the sound of these oscillators. Filter 1 is a 4-pole low-pass design based on the Prophet-6 filter. Filter 2 is a classic transistor ladder filter with optional resonance compensation to preserve its low-end punch. Filter 3 is a classic 2-pole, state-variable design based on the OB-6 filter that can be continuously varied between low-pass, notch, and high-pass operation, with an optional band-pass mode. A Drive control provides additional punch to all three filters."

Rossum Electro-Music Announces 35th Anniversary SP-1200

Rossum Electro-Music 35th Anniversary SP-1200 Renovation Published on Jan 16, 2020 Rossum Electro-Music

"This year marks the 35th anniversary of the introduction of E-mu System’s iconic 'SP' sampling percussion system, instruments that have become emblematic of the golden age of hip hop creativity. To mark this milestone, Dave Rossum (the co-founder of E-mu Systems) and the team at Rossum Electro-Music are creating an extremely limited number of 'renovated' SP-1200s.

Beginning with an original SP-1200, Dave and the team strip it down and rebuild it into a 'better-than-new' example of the classic sampling percussion system. It is then tested and calibrated to guarantee that it
provides the exact sonic character that has made the SP drum machines musical legends for 35 years (and counting).

The Rossum Electro-Music 35th Anniversary SP-1200 renovations include:

– A new 3.5″ disk drive and SD card floppy emulator integrated into the original SP-1200 software by Dave Rossum

– Manual filter cutoff frequency control sliders for the SSM 2044 analog filters for channels 1 and 2 added to the rear panel

– A new metal chassis

– A new panel overlay

– The top shell restored and painted 'SP Grey.'

– A new power supply with locking connector (and cool operation)

– A new LCD display with adjustable brightness and a selectable red, blue, or green color LED backlight

– All new play buttons

– All new programming buttons

– All new 1/4” and MIDI jacks

– All electrolytic and tantalum capacitors replaced with high-reliability ceramic or aluminum-poly caps

– All rotary potentiometers replaced with million cycle lifetime pots and installed with new knurled black metal knobs

– All slide potentiometers replaced with 200,000 cycle lifetime sliders and installed with new slider knobs

– All original trimmers replaced with 20-turn versions and precisely calibrated

– New rubber feet

– An individualized Dave Rossum signature plaque

– A dust-proof, crush-proof, lockable Pelican™ brand case with press-and pull latches, wheels, and an extendable handle.

– Full testing and calibration by Rossum Electro-Music

35th Anniversary SP-1200s are available directly from Rossum Electro-Music for US$7500.00.

Because the number of 35th Anniversary SP-1200s built will be limited by the availability of original SP-1200s, that number is likely to be extremely small. If you are interested in purchasing one, please fill out the wait list application you’ll find at the tab at the top of this page.

The 35th Anniversary SP-1200 is solely a product of Rossum Electro-Music LLC. Neither E-mu Systems nor Creative Labs participated in its production, and cannot be held responsible for this product."

Control Synthesis Deep Bass Nine

via this auction

"Deep Bass Nine is a 1U rack mountable unit, with ten dials, no hidden menus or function keys like some over complicated designs. This was essentially an imitation of the TB-303, while not hugely similar it has since become an instrument in its on right. Has one oscillator with saw and square wave. Can also be used as an audio filter for external sounds.

The Deep Bass Nine (DB9) is a nineteen inch, single unit, MIDI-controlled monophonic analogue synthesizer. It is a voltage controlled synthesizer using one volt per octave, with an excellent 24dB voltage controlled resonant filter. The filter is an exceptional resonant filter design which is very aggressive and emulates the classic 'acid' dance music bass sound.

Korg Sigma SN 0310

via this auction

Always thought it was interesting these had serial number badges on the top left panel.

"But not only, this monophonic synthesizer has plenty of possibilities and combinations.
2 sections : synthe and instrument, can be mixed together, cross modulated and more.
The parameter/effect section is also really complete :
Transpose, VCF modulation, HP BP LP filter by joysticks.
Noise modulation, Portamento.
And.. quarter tone ! This is an amazing possibility for the musicians who use microtonal scales, by pressing 2 notes at the same time you get smaller intervals !
Also every preset is programmable by the rotary potentiometers above.

This unit has been meticulously checked, serviced and calibrated.
Ready to leave for a studio or a collector.
This synthesizer is really beautiful but also sounds great !
Combined with a tape echo or a tiny amount of reverb and you will be satisfied for hours jamming with this synth."

"MicroFreak receives new oscillator and more in 2.0 firmware update

On top of announcing KeyLab Essential 88 and KeyStep Pro at NAMM 2020, French audio pioneers Arturia have also revealed a surprise update to their incredibly popular MicroFreak digital synth.

The MicroFreak 2.0 update adds several exciting new features and functions, refines some existing ones, and fixes a few minor bugs.

New Features
New Noise oscillator: morph between particle noise, white noise, and a metallic noise that’s reminiscent of a synth cymbal. An exciting new voice that will open up powerful new drum and percussion possibilities in MicroFreak.

Chord Mode: by holding the Paraphony button and playing some notes, you program the chord, then replay the shape with a single key.

Scale quantization: In the Utility settings, you can activate scale quantization to your favorite scale. When activated, the “white notes” on the keyboard play whichever scale you have selected. No more wrong notes!

Sequencer streamlining: in 2.0 firmware update, you’re now able to easily copy Pattern A to Pattern B in an instant.

Matrix initialize: before 2.0 firmware update, if you wanted to clear the Matrix of all routings, you’d have to manually do it. Now you can just hold the Shift and perform a long press on the encoder, and it will clear!
64 New Presets: Loads of exciting sounds to explore using the new oscillator and features.

MicroFreak now displays visual feedback even when Local Control is off.
The synth’s Local Control now also translates USB to MIDI Out.
The release of currently playing presets are now cleared when switching to a new one.
The Record LED now blinks on each beat, instead of on 16ths.

Thanks to MicroFreak’s digital mind, the team at Arturia will be able to offer more exciting updates and improvements like this over time, ensuring that MicroFreak is always fresh and relevant.

To update your synth, simply connect it to your computer, load up the Arturia MIDI Control Center, and hit the 'update' button for MicroFreak."

ASM Hydrasynth Version 1.3.0 Firmware Update

"LOS ANGELES, CA, USA/HONG KONG, CHINA: musician-empowering musical instruments creator Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) is proud to advance its innovative Hydrasynth digital wave morphing synthesizer — launched late last year to widespread critical acclaim as its inaugural hardware product, produced as a keyboard variant (featuring a proprietary PolytouchTM 49-note polyphonic aftertouch keybed and a user-assignable ribbon controller) and desktop variant (with 24 velocity- and polyphonic aftertouch- sensitive pads, plus an included 19-inch rack-mount kit) — with welcomed new features, thanks to a major firmware update, ultimately coinciding with the first day of The 2020 NAMM Show, January 16-19, Anaheim, CA, USA, where both variants of Hydrasynth will wow visitors for the first time for sure…

NAMM 2020 - Introducing System 100 - Behringer Modular Synthesizer

Published on Jan 16, 2020 BEHRINGER

"Introducing eleven new Eurorack compatible modules – all of them authentic reproductions of original “System 100M” circuitry from 1975. With ultra-fat oscillators and creamy filters the sound became famous in the early 80s used by artists like Depeche Mode, Human League, Tears For Fears but also Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and even Aphex Twin.

If you’re into super-fat bass sounds, in-your-face leads or flowing soundscapes, definitely check them out! All modules are incredibly feature rich, have tremendous patching capabilities and a lot of them come with dual function, like:

- 112 dual oscillator with 3 waveforms, PWM and two sync modes
- 121 dual filter with 3-channel mixer per filter
- 130 dual VCA, again with dual 3-channel mixers
- 140 dual envelope has 3 outputs per ADSR plus a built in LFO that can be triggered and phase synced
- 173 gates module comes even with four gates that can switch audio and 6 quad buffered multiples
- 297 has a dual portamento controller plus two independent CV mixers
- 150 brings a ring modulator, 2 noise generators, syncable LFO and a sample and hold generator
- 172 module delivers a 6-step phase-shifter, an analog delay, an LFO and a gate delay
- 305 is an output module a four-band parametric EQ, a 4-channel mixer, line and separate headphone output and even a tuning oscillator
- 182 there is a powerful analog sequencer with either dual 8 steps or 1-16 steps and tempo, portamento and gate time controls
- 110 is a complete synth voice with VCO, VCA and filter in a single module

Update: Word is this might be an AMSynths joint project. From their website:

"Behringer Partnership In June 2019 I joined forces with Behringer to design analog synthesizers that will be manufactured in China and sold to customer across the world. I am working on a number of projects which I will let Behringer announce when they are ready. AMSynths is continuing to grow with more Euro Rack modules being manufactured, as well as complete synthesizers like the SH05 and Jupiter One. In 2019 I started to restore vintage music gear, and you will see the repair stories in my Blog. I am also creating videos of my modules and the vintage synths that they emulate."

Update: some product sheet scans in in via Soviet Space Child and a note on one of the forums from Uli.

"I like to share with you the initial drafts of our M100 Eurorack Series.

These are 13 MID's or concept documents we create for every single product as part of our PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) process before we hand them over to our R&D departments for development.

We haven't decided yet which of these modules we will actually produce as it is important that we achieve a certain production volume.

As usual do we appreciate your valuable feedback which will give a better indication of validity of these products.

Moog Subsequent 25 | Flying Lotus + Julian House | Building Your World

Published on Jan 16, 2020 Moog Music Inc

"To illuminate the enhanced sonic vocabulary of the new Subsequent 25 synthesizer, Moog Music collaborated with prolific producer Flying Lotus and renowned graphic designer Julian House. The resulting film, Building Your World, animated by House and scored by Flying Lotus using the Subsequent 25, invites the viewer to slip into the mysterious and magical sci-fi world of analog circuits and waveforms.

Building Your World brings the journey from Sub Phatty to Subsequent 25 full circle, evoking 2013’s New Machine For Living, the animated film scored by Flying Lotus to celebrate the release of the original Sub Phatty synthesizer.

The Subsequent 25 is a new 2-note paraphonic analog synthesizer that implements upgraded sonic modifications and functional improvements from the Subsequent series of instruments. It builds on the success of the Sub Phatty by implementing the ultra-popular paraphonic functionality of Duo Mode, upgrading to wood side pieces, and featuring familiar Subsequent series of user-requested performance adjustments."
