MPC 60, MFB Synth II, Kawai K3R 80's demo by Jordan Passmore

YouTube Published on Jul 12, 2012 by jordanpassmore

"Here is a demo I made of the Akai MPC-60, Kawai K3R, and MFB Synth II. The MPC is loaded with sounds from my old Linndrum and is sequencing all the synths. The Kawai K3R is doing the chords and the MFB Synth II is doing the bass. All the synths were mixed on my Studiomaster Pro-line mixer. I am using an analog delay, analog flanger and a digital reverb on the sends as well. The sum from the mixer then goes to the Roland MMP-2, which acts as a master compressor and A/D, then finally into my soundcard (Allen & Heath Xone DX). I played the sequences manually into the MPC-60 pre-filming.

The MPC-60 does a great Linn impression here. It has a similar feel and sound to it, due probably to the shared involvement of Roger Linn in both units. The MFB excels at gritty/muffled sounds, especially when ran through a delay and that's exactly what I did with this. The K3R's dual detuned waveshapes and on-board chorus plant it firmly in 80's territory, giving the whole track a very italo/french house vibe."

Beyond the Wall ( Xils-Labs Oxiom Demo)

Beyond the Wall ( Xils-Labs Oxiom Demo) by SYNTHDemo
"Single synth demo using the beta of Oxiom from Xils-Labs. 24 tracks of Oxiom, drums and vocals generated separately.

I'm very impressed with the synth, the GUI is a pleasure to use and feels fun to operate, the filters sound great - you can hear a few in the track particularly the formant. The sync sound is particularly organic and the chorus compares well to my Juno 60. Modulation routings are very easy to use and I liked the default routings for 2 of the LFOs to destinations you'd generally route them anyway. All in all a well thought out synth for a pretty amazing intro price if you pre-order. Grab a copy of the demo here: http://www.xils-lab.com/products/Oxium.html"

AudioThing TapeStation

"What happens when a ’90s analog synth meets an ’80s tape recorder? We sampled a famous Analogue Bass Synth to tape using a new old stock cassette, and boxed it into a Kontakt Instrument. The original synth produced fat basses and sharp leads, but now the raw tape sounds and unstable pitch add perfect elements for “tron” like sounds. Each waveform (Sawtooth, Square, Pulse 5%) was sampled chromatically from C0 to C7 and each sample is more then 6 seconds long. In the custom Performance View a Saturation and Limiter Input Gain are added to the original synth’s parameters.

Specifications
2 Oscillators (Saw, Square, Pulse 5%)
12-24dB/oct filter
1 LFO (Random, Saw, Triangle) for Pitch and Cutoff
2 Envelopes
24 Factory Presets
24 User Presets (save function within the Kontakt GUI)
255 Samples (44.1Khz / 24Bit)
Size: 200 MB installed

"This is the famous Triadex Muse, regarded as the first digital sequencer /synthesizer. You can find numerous interesting writeups on the Internet. In a nutshell, the sequencer is unique in its approach leading to long, patterns that are often serendipitous, a useful aid to composition.

This unit is fully functional, completely cleaned, inside and out. the sliders have been cleaned and lubricated. The front panel is in excellent condition, you may note a small ding in the photos. All the colored sequencer lights work too as it steps though the sequences (fun to watch too)

The wood cabinet is in good condition, no major issues, a little warping on the bottom piece, a few minor scratches on the wood that disappear with fresh furniture polish. this is over 40 years old but a great piece to use, or simply add to your collection.

I have bought and sold vintage synths for over 15 years, so I always err on the side of too much packing, so it will get to you without damage."

"Hello my name is Solvent and I make electronic music. It's been a long while since I posted a new video, so...

Here is a little jam with my Eurorack modular. I've got digital sources being processed by analog (Modcan FMVDO digital oscillator into Pittsburgh Modular Filter vcf), and analog sources being processed by digital, then back through analog (Tip Top Audio BD808 + SD808 analog drum modules into Doepfer 189-1 Bit Modifier, then into a Harvestman Polivoks VCF filter). The FM bassline occasionally has some delay on it, from the Flight of Harmony Sound of Shadows digital delay module, which has the Intellijel Dr Octacture vcf patched into it's feedback loop. The whole thing is sequenced by Make Noise modules - a MATHS + Brains/Pressure Points combo."

"Again, this is just some footage of me messing around with the excellent new Super Sawtor module from Happy Nerding. In this second test I go over some of the same things as before but with some annotations this time and also some new things.

The Super Sawtor takes a sawtooth wave from a VCO as an input and "animates" it so that it sounds anywhere from slightly modulated to something like many VCOs at once. It also works really well with sine and triangle waves.

Thanks for watching!"

Sound Design Video Tutorial: Sample Layering w/ S-LAYER from Twisted Tools

YouTube Published on Jul 12, 2012 by DubSpot

"More info: http://bit.ly/MnjPtG
In this video tutorial, Dubspot Instructor and Course Designer Matt Cellitti demonstrates some creative sample-layering techniques using a new Reaktor ensemble called S-Layer from Twisted Tools.

One of the best ways to come up with creative new sounds for your productions is to layer and tweak multiple samples together to form new combinations. However, this can sometimes turn into a tedious and time-consuming effort, depending on how you approach it. S-Layer, from Twisted Tools, is a new ensemble for Native Instruments' Reaktor that aims to make this entire process easier and more creative. Using just one instance of Reaktor, you can now layer up to eight samples and have instant control over all the necessary sampler parameters needed to really tweak each one of them. Better still, S-Layer has some amazing randomization options built in that will get you thinking outside the box as you twiddle the knobs looking for 'happy accidents.' I have never used such a quick and easy instrument to do creative sound design with sample layering.

This video will give you a brief overview of all the most important features of S-Layer, as well as some ideas about how to use it for sound design. - Matt Cellitti"

The device measures the distance to your hand or any other surface and sends out corresponding CV signals between 0 and 8 volts. The closer you have your hand to the KOMMANDER, the higher the output voltage. This will allow you to create weird synth sounds, trigger a drum machine, control effect pedals or any other instrument that is capable of receiving CV signals. Because of our innovative circuit design there is no interference from stage light, so the musician can use it wherever she or he wants. Just plug the KOMMANDER into your Eurorack Modular System, Buchla, Moog, Roland or any other synthesizer and create the coolest sounds!

This lithe lady can be used as an Audio Controller, a CV Generator, a CV Controller, and a VCA (all pretty much at the same time). The superb feel of the momentary button is no fluke; Years of searching a small mountain of buttons available on the American market yielded only specimens of over-sprung stiffness; poor choices for a musical work which demands correct weight & throw for deft performance. Finally we found what we were looking for in a tiny shop at a Japanese electronics bazaar. We arranged direct import of these hand-picked gems to Trogotronic—exclusively—for the sole purpose of destroying fascists the world over with sonic display.

Model 11M Kit consists of all 45 parts + a 2.5mm driver & a full color checklist / instructional for all 23 steps (eat your heart out P-Orridge). It does NOT include a toolkit or materials such as solder and all too rare common sense, patience, time & undivided attention (all of which are necessary to complete this modest build).

Summer NAMM: Korg Exhibits microKEY Family of USB Powered Controllers

"- 61-key model bundled with the exclusive Korg Legacy Software Suite –

SUMMER NAMM SHOW, NASHVILLE, TN, July 12, 2012 - Korg is showing the latest models of its microKEY USB Powered Keyboard and MIDI Controller family. The microKEY-37 is now joined by the highly portable microKEY-25 and the five-octave microKEY-61 for the studio musician. As an added bonus, the microKEY-61 comes with the exclusive Legacy Collection Suite - the acclaimed collection of software versions of some of Korg's most coveted synthesizers, including the iconic M1 Workstation, plus effects plug-ins - to add to musicians' sonic arsenals.

For budget-minded computer musicians seeking portability and power without sacrificing keyboard feel and function, the microKEY is an ideal way to create a compact and customized MIDI command center. Free editing software and a selection of included software bundle licenses and discount coupons make the microKEY even more cost effective.

For added flexibility and control, the microKEY 37- and 61-key models both serve double-duty as a USB hub. Two USB ports (Type A) allow users to expand their control center by adding on a Korg nanoPAD2, nanoKONTROL2 or any other USB device. The Mac and PC-compatible microKEYs also run on USB power, making them well-suited for on-the-go laptop musicians. For iPad musicians, the microKEY-25 can be used to control apps such as the Korg iMS-20 via MIDI (see korg.com for details).

All microKEY models feature velocity-sensing mini keys, using the same Natural Touch keybed found on the Korg microKORG XL and microSTATION. This keybed has been designed with careful attention to the touch and feel: the proportions of the black keys and white "waterfall" keys have been adjusted for optimal playability, with a key touch that makes it easy to play chords, glissandos and rapid-fire phrases. The microKEY also accurately conveys the dynamics of the user’s performance to any software package.

Octave Shift buttons, when used in conjunction with the Key Transpose function, enable the full range of notes in the MIDI specification to be covered. For added expression during a performance, the 37- and 61-key models feature a pitch bend wheel and modulation wheel. The 25-key model features a built-in arpeggiator, a sustain/tap button, and an assignable joystick for pitch bend, modulation, or any other control change.

Free "Korg KONTROL Editor" software enables users to customize microKEY for their production or performance system. Eight velocity curves plus fixed velocity (nine total types) are provided, as well as options for specifying the control change number of the modulation wheel or joystick and the maximum and minimum values.

In addition to the Korg Legacy Collection software included with the microKEY-61, all microKEY models ship with the following software licenses and discount coupons so users can start making music right away:

1. A license to download "M1 Le," a limited edition of Korg's M1 software synthesizer that brings the sounds of the M1 Music Workstation to computer musicians. Users may also upgrade to the full "M1 software synthesizer," "Wavestation v1.6 software synthesizer," or "MDE-X v1.2 multi-effect plug-in" bundles (included with 25- and 37-key models only).

2. A license to download Toontrack's software drum sound module "EZdrummer® Lite," giving users access to numerous high-quality drum sounds. Visit www.toontrack.com for details.

3. A discount coupon for Ableton's "Live," "Live Suite," or "Live LE" DAW software, widely popular for its sophisticated functionality. For details on this software, please refer to www.ableton.com or www.h-resolution.com.

4. A license for "Lounge Lizard Session," the physical modeling sound module from Applied Acoustics Systems, famed for its richly expressive electric piano sounds. For details on this software, please visit www.minet.jp/aas/lounge-lizard-session.

5. A license for "Ultra Analog Session," the analog modeling synthesizer from Applied Acoustics Systems, acclaimed for its fat, powerful sounds. For details on this software, please refer to www.minet.jp/aas/ultra-analog-session

Summer NAMM: Korg USA Announces Kronos X Music Workstation

"SUMMER NAMM SHOW, NASHVILLE, TN, July 12, 2012 - Korg USA (Booth 906) announces the arrival of the Kronos X Music Workstation. Since the debut of the original Kronos music workstation in early 2011, Korg has continued to release system updates and additional Sound Libraries. Now, the Kronos family has expanded with the new Kronos X, which features hardware technology enhancements, including a boost in the internal memory capacity and the size of its SSD, plus enhanced sampler functionality.

The Kronos X doubles the PCM RAM capacity to approximately 2GB and the SSD capacity to 62GB, enabling musicians to take full advantage of all the Kronos Sound Libraries. In addition, Kronos X contains Korg's EXs 10-13 expansion sample series of Kronos Sound Libraries pre-installed in its demo mode. Users can obtain full versions, plus additional Sound Libraries, by simply purchasing a license key from the Web Shop at www.korg.com/kronossoundlibraries.

Along with Kronos X, Korg announces Kronos OS v2.0, coming soon for all Kronos and Kronos X models. For models that do not already have OS v2.0 installed (visible during boot), users can download it for free from www.korg.com/Kronos, then easily install it via USB.

New to OS v2.0 are user Sample Banks for creating high-capacity, custom sample libraries. Players can load and play many gigabytes of their custom or converted samples at once, using the internal Kronos SSD. Improved disk and memory enable the creation of User Sample Bank subsets, as well as mixing and matching parts from different banks, without duplicating samples on disk. Programs, Wave Sequences, and Drum Kits maintain links to the User Sample Banks even when samples are moved on disk or loaded onto a different Kronos instrument, making it easy to share sounds with friends and collaborators. Players can also create their own samples or import Akai and SoundFont 2.0 libraries using new, improved conversion features.

Additional Kronos System Version 2.0 Highlights

A second internal SSD can be added to support massive sound library expansions, including Korg and third-party Sound Libraries
USB Ethernet support enables high-speed data communication between Kronos and a computer

The Kronos X Music Workstation will be available Q3 2012, with U.S. street prices as follows: 61-key: $3199; 73-key: $3699; 88-key: $3999.

Additional product specs can be found at: www.korg.com."
