Tricks for the Dreadbox Nyx - Making an ADSR Envelope

Published on Mar 31, 2018 ProckGnosis

"And here's Nyx 'Trick #3' or "some info how to create an ADSR or 4 or 5 stage envelope using MOD 1 and MOD 2." If you like math, but are newer to synths, I would watch "Part 2" at 07:07 first and THEN go back to Part 1 at 02:14.

Part 1 - The Examples (02:14)
Part 2 - The ADSR Academics (07:07)

This is likely my last "Tricks for the Nyx" video for a while. The video is split into 2 parts: part 1 gives a worked through example of setting up a 4 or 5 stage envelope, and part 2 gets a bit more basic (the academic part), explaining how envelopes are usually shaped and how different envelopes can be shaped on the Nyx by adding the smaller MOD 1 and MOD 2 envelopes together.

I'm probably turning off some newbs by showing how the Nyx is a bit more complicated than most normal synths, but for me, that's a large part of what makes it cool. If you're a newb and you bought a Nyx, be patient...it is WORTH the investment of time to learn. Cheers!"

All parts here.

Paper Jamz Pro Mic Aetherial Noise Generator

circuitbent feedback box Published on Mar 31, 2018 paul tas

"This is an aleatoric aethereal electronic noise generator.

The original sound comes out by plugging a mic or aux, and the signal is processed by an effects processor which is pretty amazing for a toy.

My bents allow all the feedbacks to be self generated, so it becomes a constantly evolving mysterious drone.

The audio input is also radically effected by the feedback noise.

BENTS:
- High pitch feedback
- Low pitch signal (sub)"

"Paper Jamz was a collection of musical toys, produced by WowWee. Introduced in 2010, Paper Jamz were paper thin musical toys, which included guitars, microphones, keytars, drum kits, and amplifiers. They were also marketed as 'Instant Rock Star' instruments.

There were no physical buttons, knobs or keys used while playing the instruments. Instead, the battery-operated instruments featured a printed, touch-and-gesture enabled surface. The toy company produced Snoop Dogg themed guitars in 2011.[1]"

音光 (Onkou) - Light Controller for Modular Synthesizer (Breakbeat Demo)

Published on Mar 31, 2018 Takumi Ogata

"音光 (Onkou) is a light controller for Eurorack modular synthesizer system. The module has a camera that can detect X, Y, and Z positions as well as the hue color of the light. Each of these 4 parameters are mapped to a control voltage (4 separate control voltage outputs). The custom light source consists of on/off button, a knob for controlling the hue of the light, and a switch that is used to go back and forth between auto and manual mode. In auto-mode, the module takes in two separate control voltage inputs and send on/off and hue messages to the light source via bluetooth. In this demo video, wavetable control voltage from Qu-Bit Chance module is used to randomly change the hue color and sequenced gate control voltage is used for the light’s on/off pattern.

Hardware/Software used:
Make Noise Morphagene = main sound source controlled by the light controller
Qu-Bit Chance = random control voltage for light hue control
Make Noise Tempi = On/off message for the light

"Purchased last year from a Roland dealer last as a NOS [New Old Stock] item (in his basement for 30 years, he had never sold it), this single owner RS-202 was recently serviced. Tech tested & replaced various components and all capacitors (including power supply) other than the key capacitors (each key has a capacitor). Key caps did not need to be done as all keys work.

The RS-202 is a classic. It really sounds excellent. Very nice with a phaser. Just a lot of fun. Brings to mind early Genesis/Tony Banks among others. And since this unit has been completely serviced, and has less then 10 total hours of playing time on it, it is currently functioning like a new machine."

"For sale a rare MFB Dominion X SED 3 VCO analog mono synth. It’s in perfect working order. There is a minor scratch on the right wooden end panel but is otherwise in perfect condition. This is the later version, with the SED style filter. Sounds incredible.

Includes power supply with US adaptor.

FEATURES:

The Dominion X offers 3 x oscillators for maximum flexibility. Each waveform can be varied in symmetry. Besides altering the pulse width of a rectangle, you may also continuously turn a saw tooth into a triangle and a triangle into a sine. All oscillators also offer ring modulation. In addition, VCO 2 and VCO 3 can be synced to VCO1. Finally, VCO3 can modulate the frequency of VCO 1 and VCO 2. The analogue oscillator circuit is processor-controlled for stable tuning. To complete the available sound sources, noise or an external audio input can be added to the VCOs in the Dominion X's mixer section.

The filter offers 6 x operation modes. Available are 3 x low pass variations with 12, 18 and 24 dB/oct. slopes. Also available are high pass-, band pass and a notch filter with slopes of 12 dB/oct. respectively 6 dB/oct. Variable filter modulations are possible via an invertible envelope, keyboard tracking, LFO, VCO, different MIDI controllers as well as by the use o the CV-input.

"The Micromoog was designed by Robert Moog and Jim Scott as a scaled-down, cheaper alternative ($650-$800 market price) to the Minimoog. It was designed to tap into a market of musicians who wanted an introduction to synthesis, but could not afford the $1,500 Minimoog. It thus is extremely basic in design. It is a monophonic synthesizer, featuring 1 variable waveshape voltage-controlled oscillator. It has a -24 dB per octave low-pass filter with envelope generator, a voltage-controlled amplifier, noise generator, sample and hold circuit, low-frequency oscillator, and modulation routing. It has a 32-note keyboard and was one of the first synthesizers to include a built-in ribbon controller, in this instance for pitch bending. The Micromoog has an audio input allowing external audio to be run through the filter and VCA. It also features the Moog Open System control inputs, a pre-MIDI control system which enabled the unit to be controlled by other Moog synthesizers."

X1L3 - PERSUADATRON - FM radio eurorack module

Published on Mar 30, 2018 manufacturedZ3R0

"A simple demo following a dark power electronics theme. Using persuadatron to listen to a brain dead local radio station and pass it through clouds to generate the incidentals and background scene of the track.

Basically it's an FM radio with digtal controls. You can manually adjust the volume, station and mute it or you can trigger these with the gate inputs. It has an auto scan function which will scan it's entire frequency range and save all the stations it finds. Or if you prefer you can scan for them yourself.

The track is nothing more than the radio station fed into clouds and then manually manipulated with that modules controls. Made as an example of how cool a radio is for raw material more than anything else. The whole abysmal advertising breaks and template pop music package gets the treatment to awesome effect here. Backed by a drone and some strings."

"If you are reading this you already know a couple of things. First off it’s black. That is why the price is a hundred more then I would charge for a white one. Two is the fact that it takes a good long time to get one in white also. Don’t waste time over thinking this buy because this BLACK KORBOT is going to fly out of here. I listed a white one back before the update was available and it lasted like thirty minutes. The new and improved includes a sick as hell sequencer along with the craziest arpeggiator I’ve ever seen and a chord progression computer on board that makes it easy to save chords to any one of twelve pads. You can do so much with this thing and the little colored screen is sooo awesome looking. When a chord is playing the corresponding rubber keyboard button / keys light up red. This thing is hard to let go of for so many reasons that I say if the price at a place that I can order a white one for myself pay shipping to my buyer , shipping for my new Kordbot , and the two or three months it will take for me to receive my new White Kordbot and still not feel like I’m taking a loss then that’s the way I came up with the price of $500.00 then I said now that sounds fair to me then I took $25.00 more off my bottom line price. Thanks."

Friday Fun - Synth Jam Korg Minilogue and Mutable Instruments Clouds

Published on Mar 30, 2018 sonicstate

"This week in our occasional series where we pair synthesizers, modules or FX for a musical interlude, we use the Mutable Instruments Clouds - we have a special version which our Sonic TALK viewers bought in celebration of our 500th episode and had a custom faceplate made for it. Ours is called Fulsome Clouds. its an interesting unit which allows you to take sounds recorded into the input buffer, and apply granular operations to it, and sending the results into a lovely reverb.

We pair that with the Korg Minilogue - the first affordable analogue poly which we reviewed when it came out. The Minilogue is a surprisingly capable instrument for the money."

Here I'm using it for a second time alongside the Rabid Elephant Natural Gate and sweet baby christ on a bike ... they're a potent pairing! There's a full track / jam / wide shot video exclusively for my Patreon supporters with this patch but for now check out the 4 oscillators on the E370, 2 of which go through the Natural Gate alongside some beats and FX create a little action sequence style patch. Suggests for a better video title in the comments too please! 'Action patch' sounds weird :)

Mutable Instruments Introduces New Marbles Eurorack Module

Published on Mar 30, 2018 Erstlaub

"A basic overview of some of Marbles features. If you can imagine SOU/A149, Branches, Grids, Turing Machine, Brainseed, Sloth and a host of other modules all housed inside one controllable chaotic beauty, this is it!

Note: These are complex modules with a lot of inter-related functions, these videos hopefully serve to illustrate some basic operations."

Some details via Mutable Instruments:

"CONTROLLED CHAOS, REPEATABLE RANDOMNESS

Marbles is a source of random gates and voltages, which offers an extensive amount of (voltage) control on all the different flavors of randomness it produces.

The module gives the musician many different ways of imposing structure on the random events generated by the module: synchronization to external clocks, control of the repetition or novelty of the generated material, quantization of the voltages, or randomization of gates or voltages generated by traditional sequencers.

t: the random gate generator

Marbles either follows its own internal clock, or locks onto an adjustable multiplication/division of an external clock (or regular rhythmic pattern). This regular clock is perturbed by a process simulating an instrumentist playing along a click and trying to catch up on their errors - from perfect accuracy to complete chaos.

From this imperfect master clock, a 2-channel random rhythm is generated, using one of the following processes: random coin toss (similar to Branches), random ratcheting, or random drum pattern generation (similar to a randomly modulated Grids).

X: the random voltage generator

This generator produces 3 channels of random voltages, each of them clocked by the individual outputs of the t section, or by a common external clock signal.

Complete control on the distribution of the output voltages is provided: concentrated or spread-out, quantized or unquantized, smoothed or steppy, centered or biased towards a specific voltage. The same transformations can be performed on an external CV, for sample-and-hold or shift-register operation.

An auxiliary slowly fluctuating random voltage output (Y) is also available for self-patching fun!

A FEELING OF DÉJÀ-VU…

Marbles remembers the history of every recent clock deviation, rhythm or voltage it has generated. The DEJA VU knob on the panel controls the probability of reusing past material instead of sampling fresh random data.

You are thus given control on the feeling of repetition and structure in the generated random voltages and rhythms. At the extreme, the module no longer generates any novel values and loops over the same pattern (or a random permutation of it). And of course, this (variably) random looping can be performed on external CVs!"

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro (c)2018

Square waves and Pulse Width Modulation are among my favorite synth things. However, CMOS Ring Mod to me is like PWM on steroids. Today I am demonstrating my prototype module RM&S. It takes two square wave inputs and derives CMOS Ring Modulation based on the ARP Odyssey. Square wave Input 1 is used to generate -1 and -2 octave Sub-Oscillators. But this module has another trick up its sleeve. An additional output is provided which sums both Sub-1 and the Ring Modulation for a super-fat synth tone!

"Vintage ARP Pro Soloist synthesizer fully restored and in perfect working order. The keyboard was professionally restored last year by Retro Linear and is in like new playing and functioning condition. The key bushings have been replaced and play like new, with a quiet, smooth action. The sliders have been replaced with the best available LED sliders and function perfectly as new. All voices and all functions work correctly, and the touch sensor bar was replaced as well, allowing for the most expressive feature of this synthesizer to really shine. The wood sides were fitted with a new bracket and are strong and secure. With the excellent work done, this keyboard should be reliable and functional for years to come.

Cosmetically the ARP is in excellent condition, with flawless keys and clear, intact lettering throughout the synthesizer. The top has a few scratches and some minor paint missing as seen in the last two photos."

Synth Sounds of Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" | Reverb Learn to Play

Published on Mar 29, 2018 Reverb

"Tears For Fears' classic 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' is featured on the soundtrack of pretty much any movie set in the 1980s (and even makes an appearance in The Hunger Games courtesy of a Lorde cover.) And for good reason: the synth-centric tune received extreme attention and accolades in vital outlets like MTV and Billboard when it hit the airwaves. Even though it's been over 30 years since its initial release, we had to get William Kurk in the studio to break it down, because everybody wants to...learn this synth part.

0-coast ambient: data.ghost

Published on Mar 29, 2018 C Nich0lls

"Analogue synth performance featuring the Makenoise 0-Coast synthesizer. The core of this track is a single take performance, with a motif sequenced by the Malekko Varigate 8+.

data and the imperfect mirror

Patch and Recording Notes

On the surface this track might seem a little different, but the process and themes build on some earlier ideas. The central theme is an unedited, single take. Although the CV sequencing pitch remains unchanged throughout, the 2 gate streams firing the Contour and Slope generators take advantage of the Varigate 8+'s probability features. This leads to the underlying pattern or data, being constantly reshaped by the 'sampling' of the gate streams.

Additionally, there are 4 more CV outputs from a Malekko AD/LFO routed to Contour Dcy (via volt math), Overtn, Balnc, and Slope Time. These are free-running LFO's which creates a constantly shifting timbre. The amount of modulation to those destinations is increased through the recording.

The last part of the modulation is the routing of the random source (clocked by the sq wave) to the lin FM of the Oscillator. The amount of noise is adjusted throughout the performance.

The idea was to create a single pattern, whose overall audible shape and timbre constantly shifted throughout the piece. You catch glimpses of it and then it settles back into the murk.

Two additional passes were recorded and these used the exact same gate stream, but did not use the CV. They are a low 'kick' drum and higher pitched percussion. All 3 tracks were generated from the same gate source, but the probability and offsets obscure the pattern. I wanted a to create a rhythm that was persistent, but remained elusive.

The central theme is completely unedited. As a final mix I hand edited the level of each percussive track to either accent or reduce their interactions with the theme. No compression or EQ is used anywhere in the recording. I wanted to retain as much of the natural dynamics of the 0-Coast as possible (as they are amazing). The final mix is simply balanced by detailed adjustments to the levels of the percussion tracks.

The central theme was recorded through the Strymon BigSky running a custom 'Chorale' patch which went direct to the Strymon TimeLine running a custom LoFi patch. There is quite a lot of pre-delay on the reverb, so the wash becomes quite layered. The use of very short and very long notes is deliberate and creates shifting harmonies and pulses.

The 2 percussive tracks were recorded through a custom 'NonLinear' patch on Strymon 'BigSky'.

As usual, very little concern was shown to the notion of synching up all of the different timing elements! :-)

The interaction between a carefully planned patch and live performance is something I am finding very rewarding, both as a creator and a listener."
