Cross-rhythmic potential with patchblocks

video upload by dænkrø_ ElectriXity_

"Hi everyone,

unfortunately, I did not have much spare time in the last year, so all of my ElectriXity projects had to wait in a line. Eventually, I have been able to finish this one, which is the first of a series of rhythmically orientated soundscapes made with patchblocks. Most of them derived from a patch which is based on prime numbers to avoid too much regularity in the rhythmic patterns. This is an edit made of two live jam takes, so please don't expect video and audio to be in sync at any given second ;-)
Wish you all the best for 2021 and stay healthy!!
Enjoy"

Cross-rhythmic potential part 2 (with Korg Volca Beats and Patchblocks)

"I hereby declare against all common opinions that I love my Korg Volca Beats. I am not ashamed to admit it and so I want to express my gratitude and pay tribute to the many happy hours I have spent playing around and listening to my beloved drum machine. And yes, I also and especially adore the sound of its snare. Change my mind!"

Cinematic Laboratory 2021 Recap

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I'd like to wrap up a year of 153 videos with some highlights. I felt this year went by way too fast, but looking back on so many great moments of exploring modular gear it made me realize many of my favorite modules were released in 2021. If you're new to the channel, this recap may point you to videos you may like to watch. I have no idea what 2022 will bring but let's find out together!"

A Bass Moment with meeblip geode

video upload by nbornbor

"I recorded this to demo on a FB group, but goddamn, I love the sound of this thing, so it's in my catalog here. Sending a simple MIDI bass line to the Geode and playing with the knobs is so satisfying. There's a very odd transient in the attack on this synth that sounds almost mechanical, like there some spring loaded mechanism in this box that triggers the sound. I love it.
No compression or eq on this, just raw crud from the synth."

Synth Jam 86: Uno Synth Pro & Behringer 2600

Elektron Digitone and Octatrack Performance

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) tells us why he chooses the Digitone for writing music followed by a performance paired with the Octatrack MK2.

From Elektron: 'Digitone represents our vision of how FM synthesis can be revitalized and modernized. Here’s how: combine FM sound generation with a classic subtractive synthesis signal flow. From jagged chaos to mellow soundscapes in less than a second. Digitone is one unique box.

Choose from multiple FM algorithms featuring carefully selected parameters. Shape the tones with powerful filters. Arrange them with the intuitive Elektron sequencer. Round off with the stellar effects. Now enjoy the most spectacular sounds, seemingly emanating from some parallel universe.'

video upload by Postmodern Machine

"2021 → 2022

Our world can be crazy and chaotic, but has potential 🌍

Hoping we see more shifts for the better in 2022. For everything that inhabits this planet ❄🌄

Initially part of some experiments feeding the prophet 10 into the modular, this took on a bigger life after the capture of my snowy pear tree 🌳

The modular video captures the tweaks during the capture of the arp pattern. The arp sequence was altered behind the camera a couple times. The Monsoon (Clouds) created extra notes a 5th down in a different pattern. A few layers including drums were added in reaper after the initial performance."

Driving a second synth with the DB-01

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The DB-01 is usually stuck in the bass realm, but simply driving a second synth by MIDI can add an entirely new feel to a bass sequence. Here the DB-01 is driving a Vermona PerFourMer MkII. The DB-01 is going through a Boss RV-6 reverb, the PerFourMer through the Erica Synths Zen Delay (which seems to suit it so well). The second DB-01 makes a tiny cameo appearance with an effect sound. No other effects or processing than what you see.
Although the DB-01 is very happy driving other synths via MIDI or CV, it is surprisingly unhappy driving a second DB-01. Not only could I not get one DB-01 to drive the other, using CV seemed to somehow corrupt the pitch and I had to do a complete unit reset.

Unstable Articulations

video upload by nbor

"Intending to just try some things out, I ended up indulging in an extended jam, then doing some overdubs. Although it's a very different sound and structure, I'm pulling influence from early 70's Miles Davis, which so often pulls off that psychedelic miasma vibe so well. YouTube is really not the best place for this type of music, I suppose, but it will have to do.
I didn't capture the guitar work on video, but got everything else. The guitar is so heavily processed and only occasionally appears, so it doesn't really add much to show it. Once again the Bucha Easel Command is featured. Some pings from the modular, and drums on the 1010 Blackbox, the Thunder is used to play Newfangled Generate synth. Everything was refined in Bitwig, quickly mastered with Newfangled Elevate.

"The Ekdahl Moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. As well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. On top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. Also, it incorporates an LFO that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. The Ekdahl Moisturizer has tons of CV / Expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. The Moisturizer is a mono unit."

Instruō Chordal Ambient Tape Delay Patch // Instruōctional Patching

video upload by Instruō

Performance video here

"Core Techniques:
• Harmonic chord progression using Harmonàig/Saïch
• Cascaded pitch shifting delay
• Sub-harmonic waveshaping with through-zero frequency modulation
• Rhythmic textural "bird noise" by oscillator cross-modulation

This is quite a dense patch with a lot of subtle modulation and some interesting waveshaping techniques involved. Fundamentally it is a patch using 3 parallel voices as audio sources which are mixed via multiple crossfaders.

The primary voice is the harmonic aspect which utilises a Saïch controlled by a Harmonàig to define the chord progression basis of the composition.
The Harmonàig can either be controlled via CV for preprogrammed/randomly self generated progressions, or can be manually played in Performance Mode.
When a new Root note is defined, the GATE output controls the Cèis ADSR which triggers a cascade of events that influence the patch.
The Cèis envelope output (acting as an AR) sounds the chords through a VCA which routs to the Lúbadh, which is configured as a tape delay.

Various gate and trigger signals from the Cèis clock two S&H modules as well as toggling signal routing for variations in parameters such as interval offsets on the Saïch (which introduces tension tones to the chords), input mix of the Saïch voice between the Lúbadh's decks and varies the index ratio of the Cš-L's complex voice.

There is a parallel bass voice which follows the root of the Harmonàig chord progression and is triggered by the primary voice's ADSR envelope (Cèis).
The tone is produced by the trigger output striking/pinging the I-ō47 filter which is tuned to match the Root of the Harmonàig voice. The percussive tone from the Band Pass output is waveshaped via a tanh[3] channel to restrict its amplitude and add a bit of saturation to the timbre. This signal then modulates a neóni configured in TZFM configuration to act as a waveshaper over the tone.

The High Pass output is converted to an aggressive unipolar positive square wave signal via the AND gate of the eãs. This signal is used in parallel to the TZFM waveshaping to soft sync the neóni at the audio rate of the Root note frequency. This clock signal patched to the soft sync input is toggled on and off via a latching switch (tàin) controlled by the release stage gate output of the Cèis.
The result when the soft sync is engaged is a sub-harmonic introduced to the voice.
As the voice is triggered at each segment change of the ADSR this gives a longer rhymic meter that nicely matches the harmonic rhythm of the composition.

Finally, there is a generative textural voice which sits in the higher frequency bandwidth to serve as a chaotic percussive element somewhere between hi-hats and bird noises. This comes from a self modulated Cš-L. The sine wave of oscillator B is used as the sound source. The resulting tone is gated through a VCA by the OR logic result of oscillator A's PWM voice (inverted at the eãs ~ gate) and the clock pulse of the Lúbadh's left deck. The Lùbadh clock is the stable element in this gating signal as the Cš-L is fundamentally unstable due to extreme cross-modulation.

The cross-modulation is exponential on both oscillators and the wavefolder of oscillator B is used to modulate oscillator A which is in LFO range.
The wavefold depth of oscillator B is modulated in addition to the FM depth via the INDEX control.

For final seasoning, an øchd is used to add additional movement to the patch keeping things more dynamic. Vibrato is added to the Saïch voice using the first LFO from the øchd tunes to ~4-5Hz. This vibrato naturally softens the the voice as it is reverberated and echoed in the Lúbadh."

"Often when I start designing a sound it doesn't sound good at all, compared to the end result that is. I guess it's the same in many art forms, like painting, illustration or even photography, poetry or writing a novel. It needs refinement, experimentation, patience and most importantly confidence in your own vision 💞✨ The vibe of this one reminds me a bit of the newer Radiohead records, big fan here 🙌"

Triple Synth Patch (featuring Sequential Prophet Rev2, Novation Peak, and Waldorf Blofeld)

video upload by the Veiled Creature

"Here I'm using the Rev2 to control itself as well as a midi controller for the other two synths. In this way the notes are triggered for all 3 instruments at once. You are hearing chords from the Rev2 and 2 different arps by the Peak and Blofeld. By my count there are 17 voices in this particular video, but these three synths together are capable of sounding up to 41 voices simultaneously! (8 for the Rev2, 8 for the Peak, and 25 for the Blofeld).

There are no external effects, just the ones that come on each individual synth. I am using 3 presets here so I'm not 100% sure exactly how each patch was made."

Erica Synths mki x es.EDU Educational DIY Kit Line Created with Mortiz Klein

video upload by Moritz Klein

Full playlist further below.

"As some of you already know, I'll be releasing a series of DIY kits with the good people at Erica Synths. In this stream, we'll check out some of the prototypes, talk about the design process & the circuits themselves and – of course – hear what they sound like."

"Erica Synths and Moritz Klein – have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, we want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice we’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.

In total, we have developed 9 kits to build a fully-featured modular monosynth: a sequencer, a VCO, a wavefolder, a noise/S&H module, a mixer, a VCF, an Envelope generator, a dual VCA, and an output stereo mixer with a headphone amplifier. Additionally, an affordable eurorack case with a DIY PSU will also be available. While these kits are easy to build, we did not compromise on design and functionality. We will launch one kit every 4-6 weeks. Each kit comes with an extensive user manual (40+ pages) that will dive deep into not only the electronics behind each circuit but also the fundamental principles of sound synthesis.

We hope that the mki x es.EDU project will inspire future engineers and will contribute to the ever-growing diversity of electronic music technology."

Jomox RESONATOR NEURONIUM SN 003

via this auction

Not the best pics, but these are rare. This SN was actually for sale in 2008 for more, and in 2005 for even more! Hey, prices are decreasing!

"This is the out of this world Jomox Resonator Neuronium, first batch made from Jurgen at Jomox. If you want to make sounds unlike any other in the world, this is the synth for you!

This is an experimental analog neural network synthesizer that was first released in limited quantities during the early 2000s. According to JoMox, they leave it up to customers to decide whether the Resonator Neuronium is a sound production tool, performance machine, musical instrument, synthesizer, FX unit, or objective piece of art.

It's not often that a synthesizer can boast that it has never heard before sounds, but that was exactly the claim behind the Resonator Neuronium by JoMox. It is an experimental analog neural network synthesizer that was first released in limited quantities during the early 2000s. Since then, JoMox once again began making these units in 2018 after a lot of inquiries. However, they once again only did a small production run and the price obviously went up as well due to the many obsolete or hard-to-get parts required.

According to JoMox, they leave it up to customers to decide whether the Resonator Neuronium is a sound production tool, performance machine, musical instrument, synthesizer, FX unit, or objective piece of art. What can't be argued with, though, is that the Resonator Neuronium features an analog net which has two main analog layers in addition to a digital layer with sequencers.

The Resonator Neuronium is certainly very unique from a visual perspective. It is housed in an iron angled casing that has a striking, blue-coated appearance. The left side of the unit is dominated by a grouping of buttons, knobs, and LEDs that form a hexagon. The black buttons that are located around the hexagon can be used to select direct commands along with the golden potentiometer knobs. A 24-character LCD can be found on the bottom right of the Resonator Neuronium and the Menu/Presets button above it is used to access the preset display. A series of soft buttons below the LCD can also be used to access sub-menus.

With its blue color scheme, unusual hexagon layout, and gold-plated brass buttons the Resonator Neuronium is certainly something that stands out in any collection. It can also produce very unique sounds that some users have likened to animal noises, but this means it is something that might not be so easy to incorporate into your workflow. It's an amazing piece of equipment for anyone who loves creating experimental music, but there are also many users who have struggled to find the sweet spot when using it in their workflows.

Try using this with 6 ribbon strips on the 6 outputs. Not only will you be able to make noise like those from the year 3000 but will add the capacity to have variables in oscillations between the neuronal axis of the parameters. Truly the most fascinating instrument ever made in the history of the planet!"

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 3.3

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 is one of the first fully programmable polyphonic analog synthesizers of the 80s. The Rev 3.3 is considered the most reliable of the Prophet 5 versions and has 120 memory patches, five voice polyphony, two oscillators per voice, and a white noise generator. The unique analog sound of the Prophet 5 is ageless. It can be adapted to MIDI or used stand alone.

Cosmetically- In my opinion, it is in very good cosmetic condition, so please check out the photos and judge for yourself. The original walnut cabinet has been cleaned and looks good. All of the original badges are present, and all of the knob caps are original, with some wear.

Internally- This keyboard has recently been completely refurbished by David Trouse (great keyboard tech in the Bay Area), after being in storage for 25 years. It was fully disassembled and cleaned, all potentiometers and switches have been cleaned. It has a new battery, the keyboard was completely rebuilt, leveled, and balanced (new guides, bus-bar polished, j-wires cleaned, keyboard re-lubed), it's been fully calibrated, and it has had the original factory sounds uploaded. It plays great!

This keyboard is completely original. MIDI adapter kits are available at Wine Country Sequential for $379."

"I recently had a Moog factory trained technician work on it to fix a no output issue. When I got it it lit up but had no sound. He rebuilt the power supply and checked all the internal connectors and replaced a few capacitors but has not solved the no output issue. He could have kept going on it but got over busy with studios needing his services. He did say the top octave tone board is all good and in working shape. He believes its a capacitor or loose soldier joint somewhere else that’s responsible for the no output. It’s certainly solvable from what he said."

Cosmic O (Ambient Kosmiche w/ Juno 106, Sequential Prophet Rev2, Roland V-Synth XT)

video upload by MKDVB

"Recorded with Roland Juno 106, Sequential Prophet Rev2, Roland V-Synth XT, Synthstrom Deluge.

Ambient, kosmiche synth music inspired mainly by old synthesizer New Age holiday music cassette tapes. We wanted to make a Christmas concept album but maybe less cheesy. We tried to make it accessible for friends and fam but it kinda turned into weird Christmas music anyway, probably because we are weird.

This is an edited version of an original composition from the album Cosmic Christmas.

Remix version, early 2022!"

Nymphes & Juno 106 // ACTUALLY Compared

video upload by

"Nymphes First Impressions : [posted here]

// MY ENTIRE POINT // TLDW : They're totally different, although the seeing them as similar is not totally unfair. Careful, informed programming can help you get where you want.

I can understand why people are comparing these, the Juno 106 is so ubiquitous, it will get brought up no matter what.
And I, and many others, see most of the Juno's "essence" is superficially here ; 6 voices, 1 osc, a proper sub oscillator, with stereo chorus easy to add.

Then, with even a bit of proper investigation, you'll find that they behave quite differently. VCO vs DCO, the relative phase of the saw and square, potential LFO routings, among more.

BUT in the end, the "Juno thing" is not a static goal, or really quantifiable. And with careful, informed programming, many synths can give you some element of that "thing", whatever it is to you in that moment. If the Juno patch has only a saw and a sub, the Nymphes has no trouble at all re-creating the sound with a really impressive amount of accuracy. If it has a saw and a square, with an open filter, they will sound radically different. But not bad. Just different. And often, different in a way that is insignificant to the final sound, certainly irrelevant to what compositions a sound can be used for.

So, there's so much nuance at play here and so many things to teach and learn about, that I view a 14 minute video riffing on an open sawtooth as a pretty huge blunder. 👀

The Sound of Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You - Oberheim OB-Xa

video upload by RetroSound

"One of my favorite songs from the 80s and my last video in 2021.
Thank you for all the likes, for the kind words and for the support.

I used here the Oberheim OB-Xa Synthesizer for the pads, string sounds and the main synth riff.
For the Yamaha CP-80 piano sound I used my Yamaha Reface CP incl. the internal effect section. The bass sound is made with the Moog Source. The Drums are samples from the E-MU library.

The sound tutorial for the intro sound can you find here." [posted here]

QasarBeach Alias development 1

video upload by QasarBeach

"This shows QBIII being developed. This is the first oscillator"

You can find additional posts on QasarBeach via the label below. As the video description states, version III is in development.

New AMSynths AM8325 OBIE-XA FILTERS Eurorack Module

Details:

"The AM8325 module is a recreation of the 2 and 4 pole filters in the Oberheim OB-Xa. The filter uses two AS3320 filter chips to produce an amazing sounding VCF. The 2-pole filter is a state variable, reminiscent of the Oberheim SEM, with low pass and high pass outputs. The 4-pole filter is a classic 24dB OTA low pass.

PRODUCT STATUS: IN PRODUCTION
Euro Rack Module: 14HP wide

The filter has two audio signals inputs with level control (OSC1, OSC2), frequency cutoff and resonance controls, along with two frequency modulation controls (MOD and ENV). There is also a dedicated keyboard input for controlling the filter cutoff from a pitch signal.

Front panels slide switches control whether the keyboard pitch CV is ON or OFF, and which filter mode is provided at the output:
2-pole low pass
2-pole high pass
4-pole low pass
There are six 3.5mm jack sockets mounted on the bottom of the panel;
Signal Inputs (x2)
CV Inputs (x2)
Keyboard Input
Signal Output.
The module comes with a 10-pin power cable and a set of mounting screws and washers (M3 silver)."

Listen to the few that still have reason
Those who hold the truth and is for love
More will come along from the tree hollow
Sever all the ties with those who follow

- Before you lose you lose control
- Lock the wisdom in another time
- Before you lose you lose it all
- Lock the wisdom of another kind

Colors of the fall, a different season
Those who hold the pride that is for all
Those you wouldn't think, committing treason
Walking two by two they look so small

- Before you lose you lose control
- Lock the wisdom in another time
- Before you lose you lose it all

Korg Poly-61 - no talking - part 1/2

video upload by The Synth King

"The Korg Poly-61 was released in 1982 as the successor to the Polysix. It was somewhat of a step up from the Polysix, as it has 2 DCOs for better reliability. It also retained the arpeggiator of the Polysix. The Poly-61 can provide cool gritty basses or trippy analog sounds and fx. However, its filter only has 7 steps of resonance and is not as fat as the Polysix's filter. It also uses the same method of programming the Poly-800 and Yamaha DX-7 use, so it's not a very useful synth for real-time-tweaking junkies. The first Poly-61s didn't have MIDI, but the Poly-61M released in 1984 corrects this. Overall, the Poly-61 is still a decent synth, and it can be acquired for practically nothing!"

Sinevibes Odds oscillator on Korg NTS-1, Arturia MicroFreak, Zoom MS-70CDR - Oddity

video upload by Waveformer

"Here's a jam using the new Odds oscillator for NTS-1 from Sinevibes, together with the Arturia MicroFreak and the Zoom MS-70CDR. The Odds oscillator is a "stochastic control synthesis plugin", which translates into lots of cool oscillator models that can be modulated, transposed and triggered with variable probability. The video contains patch notes throughout the jam.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The NTS-1 receives notes from the MicroFreak via MIDI, and also has the arpeggiator turned on, so it plays arpeggiated notes based on the incoming MIDI notes from the MicroFreak. The Odds oscillator plays fifths with random probability, octave shifts and parameter modulation.

The audio is recorded to SD card on Zoon R-16 mixer/recorder and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 17.

- Arturia MicroFreak
- Zoom MS-70CDR

Some OP1 + Microcosm + Cycles magic 🧘🏻🌸

video upload by PanicGirlVids

"Some magic for you with the OP1 + Microcosm + Cycles 🧘🏻🌸
There are some tools, where you really need to know how to handle them and what sound you want to get out of them in the first place and some tools, which you can just turn on and let the magic happen. Which ones do you prefer more while composing? For me it's a good mix of both I guess. I want to be surprised and have fun while producing, but also have control in the details 🎛️"

John Bowen Solaris | Epic, Enormous & Expensive

video upload by Espen Kraft

"A flagship synth from 2011, the John Bowen Solaris is both vintage and modern at the same time. It's all digital, but it can mimic both old analogs as well as the 80s hybrid synthesizers and more.

Check out the synth here: https://www.johnbowen.com

The idea to use a Compact Flash card to store patches, presets, Wav-files and even the OS is a great concept in my opinion. Yes, it means you can loose everything if not careful, but as long as you have a backup of the card you can put it into another Solaris and boot it up to reveal YOUR Solaris.
Using the CF card does not mean the Solaris boots the OS from the card, you flash the Solaris from the card when there's a new OS update you want to install into the synth.
You do need to have the CF card present to have your presets and patches available though.

The demo song was made to showcase what I feel is the best part of the Solaris, the ability to mimic the classic hybrid synths like the Prophet VS, the PPG, and also synths like the Yamaha FS1R which uses formant shaping. The drum loop that comes up at the end is also out of the Solaris as you can create patches based off your own Wav-files.
The first part of the demo song is all recorded by hand, with a free flowing tempo. I also play an arpeggiated part on top of this.
The second part is recorded to tempo.
Some of the patches are part of this Solaris' preset bank, while some of the sounds are either edited presets or my own makings.
External FX used in the demo track: Valhalla VintageVerb, GFI Specular Tempus.
The demo track has been mixed and mastered using my well documented workflow and gear."

"Rare E-MU Systems EMAX I HD Plus SE Rackmount Sampler. Factory Plus SE HD Model 2121. Internally mounted SCSI2SD 5.2 board with 4 partition 16GB SD card capable of holding nearly 160 banks in the floppy drive slot. Comes loaded with many custom and factory library sounds I will include download links for entire Emax library as well.

Analog and Digital Boards have been recapped. New medical grade power supply installed. Everything works great and sounds amazing! 12 bit character and true analog filters.

System boots up in seconds from SD card. Banks save and load nearly instantaneously. The HD advantage is huge over standard floppy or Gotek systems as every function of the unit is faster and more responsive.

Display has been updated to a beautiful new white OLED display. Sadly pictures can't do justice to the quality of the OLED. Everything works as it should. Incredible sounding sampler with analog processing. SE features provide deep synthesis."
