TR707 blinkenlights Screen Replacement for the Roland TR-707

This one is in via @dylab

via synth.ewancolsell.com:

"One of the bad things that can happen to a TR707 is the LCD becoming Damaged, either by exposure to too much sunlight, liquid damage, bad luck, etc.

Whilst it is entirely possible to use a TR707 without looking at the screen, it isn't much fun. after repeatedly hearing people on the internet, searching in vain for replacement tr707 screens, i decided to have a go at making a replacement. my tr727 screen works perfectly, so it's a perfect opportunity to develop a replacement.

i was originally going to do this with an OLED, but finding a cheap one the right size was kind of hard. So i decided to go down a different path. Lots of little Leds and a couple of Led controller chips.

There are few question marks for this project still, especially regarding power consumption, i'm going to have to determine experimentally how little power i can get it to consume, by running the leds at the lowest possible duty cycle.

Also tbd is a nice way of attaching it to the TR707 without drilling holes in it.

This is only part of the screen replacement project, the other half is the MCU that will decode the data from the TR707 CPU. i'm sure that's going to have a few surprises."

Novation & Sequential Synth Bundle Giveaway

via Novation, where you can enter for a chance to win the giveaway:

"We've teamed up with our Focusrite Group family member, Sequential, to bring you the ultimate synth and controller bundle worth over $1,900 USD.

(1) Novation Launchkey 37 [MK3]
(1) Novation Circuit Tracks
(1) Sequential Prophet Rev2 8 Voice desktop synth

Launchkey is Novation's intuitive and fully integrated MIDI keyboard controller for making tracks in a DAW and with external hardware, designed to give you everything you need to create and play your music. Made for creators of all abilities, Launchkey gives you inspirational tools to expand your musical vocabulary. Scale and Chord Modes and a powerful arpeggiator push your musical creativity and help start new ideas. Custom Modes and a full-size MIDI output transform Launchkey into a powerful centrepiece of any music-making setup.

Circuit Tracks is the agile groovebox for creating and performing electronic music without resistance. Two refined polyphonic digital synth tracks expand your sonic capabilities, and samples across four drums tracks can be loaded via microSD and shaped to perfection. Builtin FX polish your sounds. Two dedicated MIDI tracks and a built-in battery make it ideal for multi-device setups and for creators on the move.

A modern classic reinvented. The Prophet Rev2 desktop module by Sequential is just as powerful and easy to use as its counterpart, the Prophet Rev2 keyboard. The module has the same controls with the same ease of use as the keyboard version. Best of all, it sounds just as awesome, because it’s exactly the same on the inside — Dave Smith’s reimagining of his now-classic Prophet ’08 poly synth. The Prophet Rev2 retains all of the key features of the Prophet ’08 and expands on them. It has twice the polyphony, twice the mod matrix, waveshape modulation on all waveforms, digital effects per layer in stacked or split voice mode, a polyphonic step sequencer per layer, and more. The result is a true analogue powerhouse.

This giveaway ends September 14th and is available to participants with a US mailing address only.

LXR-02 tutorial - Part 4: Patterns

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Part four of a getting started guide for the Erica Synths LXR-02 drum machine. This is with a beta version of firmware 1.2. This tutorial covers the fundamentals of patterns with a focus on the pattern generator. The generator is a Euclidean pattern generator but is so fast and versatile it's useful as a starter in just about any situation. The tutorial also looks at pattern and track lengths and clearing tracks.
This was also going to cover song mode but (and please test this for yourself) I believe there's a bug in song mode where the song plays backs patterns one-higher than the saved pattern number. So if your song says play back patterns 1, 2 and 3 it will actually play patterns 2, 3 and 4. As soon as this is fixed I'll do a video on song mode!
Note also in the pattern generator page that "mrp" is a morph control and will also be covered in a separate video.

The 'Techno' I make is much more experimental and effect driven... and wouldn't be a good way to show y'all how to use this awesome instrument. If this is useful - let me know I'll make another episode with parts I didn't cover. If you have questions - let me know and I'll include in part 2. Concept, and design: Kim Bjørn
Editing team: Chris Meyer, Marc Doty, Gordon Reid, Collin Russell and Kim Bjørn

Image editing: Kim Bjørn
Additional image editing and illustration: Natascha Bondo Bjørn"

"Text from the back cover:

SYNTH GEMS 1 is your guide to an eclectic and amazing collection of synthesizers as art. Experience the history, technology, and sonic innovation of electronic music in a completely new way.

With their widely diverse designs and intentions, synthesizers offer a world of fascination. What thoughts and emotions guided their creators? What do they say about the era when they were created? How do their form and function define one another, and the music they make?

As much for serious synth enthusiasts as for newcomers to electronic music, SYNTH GEMS 1 is an enlightening look into this wonderful world of vintage synthesizers.

An art gallery of electronic aesthetics

SYNTH GEMS 1 takes you on a tour of over 60 remarkable keyboards — large and small, famed and rare, elegant, beautiful, and brutal… and ranging from classics that define entire genres to rare oddities that bring their own grace to the world.

Each synthesizer is presented in a series of finely detailed photographs, with a discussion of its origins and importance. From the dawn of commercial synthesis to the close of the Twentieth Century, the lives and times of these unique instruments are chronicled in exquisite pictures and thoughtful stories – mingling music, technology, commerce, and visual art.

Meet the synthesizer

Besides a brief introduction to the basic elements of synthesizer design, as well as a comprehensive Glossary, the book is rounded out by tours of the three museums that opened their collections to be photographed, and a selection of resources for further study: books, films, educational initiatives, online resources – even ways to play with these sounds at home.

Known classics and significant rarities

Explore the designs and read the stories behind instruments from famous brands such as ARP, Casio, Clavia, Korg, Moog, Oberheim, Roland, Sequential, and Yamaha – as well as vintage gems from Crumar, Electronic Dream Plant, Elgam, E-mu, Ensoniq, Fairlight, Kawai, Gleeman, Lord Synthesisers, Steiner-Parker, Technics, Waldorf, and more.

The GEMS Series from Bjooks celebrate the inner and outer aesthetics of electronic musical instruments:

Detailed and beautiful color photographs, taken specifically for this series
Insightful discussion of the technical details – and the historical significance – of each instrument
Clear and inviting introductions to the concepts that guide these designs"

New Befaco Modules for Superbooth: Noise Plethora and MEX!

Kickalls provide extra audio lines.
Lich is running Stoke patch, sending audio and random CVs: https://www.rebeltech.org/patch-libra..."

via Befaco

"We are ready for superbooth and super excited to announce we will be presenting two new modules! We are located in one of the outside tents, table Z190 Please pass by if you are around for a talk and take a look to the new babies!

The big one is noise plethora, a three channel noise module with a selector of type of noise. Each channel has an analog multi mode filter to allow shaping the noise to get from hats sounds, to harsh glitches and textures.

This module will release first week of November at a final price of 350€ (Taxes included)

The second module. MEX, is a trigger expander for Muxlicer! It adds a new line of gates to Muxlicer's sequence, where you can choose to turn off the step, output same number of gates as muxlicer, or sending just one. A very simple concept, that provides great flexibilty! And greatest thing: you can daisy chain them so you can add as many as desired!!

This module will release last week of October at a final price of 85€ (after taxes)"

Shakmat announces new VCO and LFO at SUPBERBOOTH21

"Belgian manufacturer Shakmat presents two new modules at Superbooth 21 - their first VCO, the Banshee Set, and a quite peculiar modulation source called the Mod Medusa !

Banshee Set

The Banshee Set is a powerful 8hp analog VCO with varishape and thru zero FM/PM capabilities. The varishape output provides a continuously variable waveform morphing into a sine, a triangle, a saw and a square wave which are crossfaded with a sub octave generator. The triangle core of the VCO is normalized to the shape CV input which yields very peculiar waveforms. The Banshee proves to be a great companion for your FM duties as a carrier or as a modulator thanks to its thru zero FM / PM input and soft sync capabili- ties. The Banshee also serves as a flexible modula- tion source as it can go into LFO range !

Mod Medusa

In a simplistic way, The Mod Medusa could be described as an Euclidean LFO : it is an “algo-rhythmic” modulation source which produces variable period LFO signals synced to rhythmic patterns. Those patterns are generated by algorithms such as the euclidean one (famous for trigger sequences generation) and as other algorithms coming from the White and Knight's Gallop. Mod Medusa has 4 outputs generating 4 correlated LFOs, which give different “polyrhythms” feeling according to the chosen mode. Generated waveforms can be easily twisted thanks to the symmetry and waveform parameters which continuously morph the signal into different waveshapes. A very unique approach which leads to instantaneous and original results!

If you are making it to Superbooth, don't hesitate to come and say hello to our team at booth W380!"

Yamaha CS-01 Analog Synthesizer 1982

video upload by Jonasan

"The CS-01 is an interesting synth. It came out around a time when analog monosynths were mostly being phased out for DCO based polysynths and digital synthesizers. After a little under a decade of compact synthesizers for musicians being available from japanese companies an analog monophonic synthesizer was cheaper to produce for a novice level musician at the time. Synths like the CS-01 and SH-101 from roland as well as the M-500sp from korg were all offerings that basically were these companies slapping tried and true designs into plastic boxes for affordable prices. These days all synths from this time are equally as pricey but the CS01 is still fairly affordable and has some good tones to offer. Its actually not really a VCO synth but a digital oscillator with analog filters and low resolution envelopes. This was the trend of the early 80s budget synths. The Saw and Square waves are pretty standard stuff but sound very good and the the weird 12db filter with switchable high and low resonance while groaned about online by losers is perfectly functional as i demonstrate here. The ADSR is very sensitive and okay? Its my least favorite part of this synth. The real special part of this synth is its PWM. Its FAT, set to a low footing and its insanely deep and set higher and it does soaring singing leads very well. These things seem to have largely been passed up by the reverb scalpers and the youtube influencer reddit effect. I see some going for $400+ which is hilarious. You should try to snag one as if you wait any longer there might not be any vintage analog synthesizers left you can buy under $800+. Also this little thing while looking like a toy actually is a wonderful instrument! Excuse the sloppy noodling i was not myself while recording this one. I try to show a variety of tones! They were apart of a producer series that yamaha offered with a drum machine, mixer, 4 track cassette recorder and some other items intended to get a musician off to the races! I own the drum machine of that series and will make a follow up video on it soon. A mkii version was made with a 24db filter with the resonance switch changed for a slider in 1984 but i havent had a chance to try one.

Specs:
1 VCO - triangle / saw / square / pulse / PWM
Sine waveform
1 ADSR envelope gen"

Roland SH-2 Analog Synthesizer Demo

video upload by

"This synthesizer is really special to me. When i got into all this stuff 6 years back it mostly came from listening to music such as YMO and related acts and albums and the sounds of mid to late 70s synthesizers had infected my brain! The roland SH-2 appears to recently have had been given the knod by a few popular synth youtube personalities which i was happy to see. 6 years back when i was researching instruments to take me to these sounds it was much more common to see SH-09s and SH-101s and you rarely ran into the SH-2. Now they appear to be for sale everyday although prices on everything have exploded. I am of the opinion having played all three that the SH-2 is the king of the smaller SH synthesizers. while not a must for excellent mono synth tones the dual VCO's change the entire feel beyond what a simple sub osc can provide with a single VCO. It seems roland did not manufacture these for more than a few years but they are everywhere online. You really should grab one! The filter is very wet and self oscillates in such a pleasing way, The sine wave provides deep basses and the PWM with dual VCO is very lush. This synthesizer is very powerful on all fronts except maybe modulation potential. Here are some of the specs below

2 VCO's + 1 Sub oscillator (waveforms: pulse, square, sawtooth, sine, noise)
LFO with sine, square and Sample & Hold; Auto-Bend
Resonant, self-oscillating 24dB lowpass filter(four OTA-stages with selected BA662 with FET transistors as Buffers), mod by EG, lfo and kybd tracking. External audio input
CV / Gate
This video is my first attempt to offer an audio demonstration of some of the different sounds you can get out of these synthesizers. Apologies for my arm in the shot and the watermark. I was testing software and am still getting used to making videos!"

"The World’s Smallest, Letter Size Pipe Organ

Hybrid Recorder Pipe Organ RP-09

"After half a year since its release of RP-103, we succeeded in miniaturizing it more by re-designing all its circuits, mechanisms, and software. We made it because we want more people can enjoy the pipe organ personally.

By utilizing Roland K-25m as the RP-09’s keyboard, we could successfully miniaturize it to letter size (A4 sheet size) including keyboard.

While RP-09 has similar structure to the classical pipe organ, it uses two Arduino Pro Mini to control its internal mechanism. It is also controllable via DAW or sequencing software.

This is a fusion of the technology of the past and present realizing the very solemn but very personal pipe organ on your desk top."

"In which I demo an instrument amplifier inspired by the 1932 designed Resonateurs Métalliques by Martenot. The out-of-production Eowave Metallik Resonator is a beautiful sounding instrument, that instead of speaker cone uses a gong to turn electrical signals into sound. Thanks to @Josh Semans for showing the Ondes Martenot in this video."

New 6m0d6 TR-606 inspired euorack module by LPZW and Tubbutec

"6m0d6 is based on the famous TR-606 and indeed can sound like one, but it is so much more. With the turn of a knob you can explore completely new soundscapes ranging from organic retro drum sounds to industrial sound effects – while still maintaining that ‘606’ feel.

Seamlessly blend between a 606 bassdrum to a decayed 808 sub-bass, tune and damp your Cymbal or just cut it into pieces and beat it with a monkey wrench.

Tired of the normal snare sound? Why not replace it with a bit-crushed version of Indy fighting foes with his whip in a cave?

Dynamic triggers, additional CV controls, midi control and individual outputs add the finishing touches to this versatile drum module.

6m0d6 includes all seven TR-606 instruments:
Bass Drum, Snare, Low and High Tom, Cymbal, Open and Closed Hihats.

The original 606 circuits were replicated and modified with additional parameters. However, we made sure that each instrument can be set to sound like the original. These settings are marked on the front panel for convenience.

A collaboration of LPZW.modules and Tubbutec
