Brooklyn Synth Expo 2019 Recap
"Brooklyn, 06.14.2019 - This year the organizers of the Brooklyn Synth Expo (and its sister event the Stompbox Exhibit, now part of it) were able to take the event one step up with the adoption of a new large and suggestive venue in East Williamsburg, and the addition of informative classes and presentations - including a live performance by synthesist extraordinaire Lisa Bella Donna to close day one [third video in the playlist above and posted here].
Roughly 2,000 musicians attended the expo, evenly divided between guitarists and synth-heads, but with a good share of players interested in both formats.
The educational side of the show included a memorable class on FM synthesis by Yamaha's own Phil Clendeninn, a discussion about MPE featuring reps from ROLI and Sensel, introductory Eurorack courses curated by STEM Modular, and classes on synthesis by NYC music school 343Labs.com (who also shot this video of the event) [second video in the playlist above]. A more DIY walkthrough of the Synth side of the show can be seen here [first video in the playlist above].
Several synth companies used the stage to present their new products recently introduced at Berlin's Superbooth; the Brooklyn show's timing works well in this regard, being the first relevant synth event in the US after the big German synth convention, including the new and yet unreleased Motor Synth by Gamechanger Audio. The Latvian company's reps sported classy red and black clothing in perfect Kraftwerk style.
The Synth Expo organizers have other events coming up: the next one will be another synth and pedal expo called Sonic Circuits in collaboration with Montreal's electronic festival MUTEK on August 24-25."

Hachi Sequencer Running on Yaeltex Controller
Mike Perkowitz
The above is a playlist featuring videos of Mike Perkowitz's custom sequencer running on a custom Yaeltex controller. You might remember Hachi from this previous post of it running on a Novtion Launchpad pro. You can find some additional info on Hachi there, and here's a post of it controlling a Nord Modular rack, a Morphing Terrarium, and a Fantom XR. You can find info on Yaeltex custom controllers below.

And some info on Yaeltex: the following is an image from Yaeltex's website featuring their custom controllers. Note the Hachi is top center. According to Mike, his might be the only one with the Hachi branding, although he believes Yaeltex is set up so you can order controllers that other people design. You can also design and buy your own custom controller online through their site.
You can find more of their controllers at https://yaeltex.com

Synth Jams by Jay Hosking
Published on Jul 26, 2019 Jay Hosking
Spotted the first video in the playlist above on discchord.com. The Playlist contains 21 videos. You can use the player controls to skip around. Descriptions for each are below. All videos feature various gear so you should be able to get an idea of some of the capabilities of each featured. You can check out Jay Hosking's music at https://jayhosking.bandcamp.com/.
Note, more will likely get added over time. The following playlist is as of this post:
1. Jam w/ Vermona PERfourMER MkII, Elektron Analog Rytm MkII, OTO Bam, Styrmon Big Sky, Fugue Machine
A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some pretty tough news that has me sentimental.
I loved the Elektron Analog Four MkII so much that I picked up the Analog Rytm MkII. My feelings on the Rytm are mixed. On the one hand, it's missing that spontaneity and spark of units like the Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Teenage Engineering OP-Z, with no readymade performance effects, roller bar, or global randomization, and a slower workflow. On the other hand, I really like its analogue sound engines, any unused tracks can be converted into impressive analogue mono synths, it does beautiful things to samples, and like all Elektron boxes it integrates the effects into the sequencer really nicely.
As for the Vermona PERfourMER MkII, I'd been pining over it for ages, and it was fun to finally tinker with it. The Perfourmer definitely excels in the mid- and high- range, and I love how the independent voices making really interesting voices for chords.
Vermona PERfourMER MkII + OTO Bam — Three synths (left chord note, right chord note, melody)
Vermona PERfourMER MkII + Strymon Big Sky — Bass chord note synth
Elektron Analog Rytm MkII — Drums, samples, sample melody, punchy bass
Fugue Machine (iOS) — Sequencing
IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo — MIDI out from iOS
Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little sidechain compression on the Perfourmer (to emphasize the sound that the Rytm was already making), and compression/limiting on the master.

1st test with the Drum Machine part of the Roland MC 707 - Sound Provider
"The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.
The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.
The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music—including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics—today.
In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an updateable and expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds—all available online."
"The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.
The MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.
On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.
With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity."

The Sound of Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F - Beverly Hills Cop Theme

One of my favorite 80s movie themes
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
Beverly Hills Cop theme
I used the Roland JX-3P for the main theme sound, the bass and string pads.
In the original track Faltermeyer used the Roland Jupiter-8, the JX-3P and the Yamaha DX7.
The JX-3p is the best synth in my opinion for classic JP-8 sounds. Nearly identical sound with good programming. I used the Yamaha DX7 II for all digital sounds.
Drums: LinnDrum and Emulator II Samples
The Roland JX-3P Synthesizer from the year 1983 is a fantastic analog synth with the typical 80s sound. Here can you find the full JX-3P playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

Erica Synths mki x es.EDU Educational DIY Kit Line Created with Mortiz Klein
video upload by Moritz Klein
Full playlist further below.
"As some of you already know, I'll be releasing a series of DIY kits with the good people at Erica Synths. In this stream, we'll check out some of the prototypes, talk about the design process & the circuits themselves and – of course – hear what they sound like."
"Erica Synths and Moritz Klein – have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, we want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice we’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.
In total, we have developed 9 kits to build a fully-featured modular monosynth: a sequencer, a VCO, a wavefolder, a noise/S&H module, a mixer, a VCF, an Envelope generator, a dual VCA, and an output stereo mixer with a headphone amplifier. Additionally, an affordable eurorack case with a DIY PSU will also be available. While these kits are easy to build, we did not compromise on design and functionality. We will launch one kit every 4-6 weeks. Each kit comes with an extensive user manual (40+ pages) that will dive deep into not only the electronics behind each circuit but also the fundamental principles of sound synthesis.
We hope that the mki x es.EDU project will inspire future engineers and will contribute to the ever-growing diversity of electronic music technology."

Dirtywave M8 Demos by Avrilcadabra
videos by Avrilcadabra
Tutorial / DIY videos towards the end of the playlist. You can use the video controls to skip around.
Playlist:
1. Generative patch showing off Dirtywave M8 Macro Synth
A glimpse at some of the sounds from M8's Macrosynth engine.2. Dynamo ( Dirtywave M8 )
The m8 has wavesynth, macrosynth, FM synth, sample and Midi
This is my new track Dynamo made entirely on the Dirtywave M83. Dirtywave M8 basic workflow ( making a small track )
The M8 creator Trash80 was kind enough to play my track on the fortnightly online meetup for the M8 using the real time 3d rendering that was used to make to m8 Demo video.
So with his blessing I have used it here to show my track. This track was made on M8 Headless using a Teensy 4.1. As I don't have a hardware M8 yet.
You can buy this track at https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/rel...
Take a look at the basic workflow of making music on the M8 tracker.4. Dirtywave M8 Tutorial ( Wavesynth Deep Dive )
Hi I got asked what the workflow is like on the M8, it's kind of too hard to do with subtitles alone, so I did a voice over on this one. I am used to filming hardware, so screen recording and microphones is not something I am experienced at. Can only get better from here.
I preloaded some instruments to make this video go faster.
This is M8 headless version running on a teensy 4.1
M8 Headless is free you just need a teensy 4.1
Learn about setting up M8 Headless here https://github.com/DirtyWave/M8Docs/b...
Lets go over wavesynth on the Dirtywave M8 and learn what everything does.5. Dirtywave M8 hardware Unboxing
Wavesynth / WAVSYNTH is one of the synth engines in the Dirtywave M8 and it is my favourite one.
Lets check out the Dirtywave M8 hardware in this unboxing and demo.6. Dirtywave M8 - Connect to a bigger screen using M8WebDisplay
I preordered the production version of the M8 when they first were available too and having been eagerly await for it, for months. During that time I have been using the headless software version a lot.
I had played with the M8 the day before so put it back in the box for this video, there was also some white packing paper in the box, not shown in his video as my cat took off with it, and the usb cable came in a plastic bag also if I remember correctly.
I wrote a fair few presets and my first Sid presets pack comes preinstalled on the M8, super happy to be able to do that. Since the production cards were finalized some time ago, I ended up making a tonne more presets. Which you can download here for free to put on your M8. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tt22qvn6o4v...
I did not mention in this video, but the M8 is class compliant USB audio and Midi, and also sends data to mirror it's display on a computer via a web app. so you can set up an external moniter on your computer and put the app on that window, then you can display M8 on a 4k tv, projector or CRT etc.
How to connect the M8 to a computer and 4k tv, projector or CRT
Today we are using the wonderful webdisplay created by DerkyJadex which is can found here https://derkyjadex.github.io/M8WebDis...
Just plug your M8 (or headless M8) into the usb on computer and it will appear on the web display. Worse case scenerio you have to select a serial com port in the ui on the webdisplay.

1. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Expert Sleepers Ultimate Interface ES-9
Expert Sleepers were on hand to show their entirely new ES-9 which takes the concept of modular and DAW integration with DC coupled connections, to its logical conclusion - featuring 16 IO interface, plus 2x balanced Audio outs as well as 8x8 minijacks, and optical IO, as well as compatibility with the ES expansion modules (for up to 48 additional outputs). You can now use this at the heart of your live or recording system in one go. Available soon priced at £499 UK2. SYNTHFEST 2019 - IO Instruments Filter - With dual resonance types
New dual filter type from IO Instruments adding to their expanding range of affordable modules, this one featuring a ladder filter (24/12/6dB slopes) - with bass compensation and an MS type filter. With Linear FM, Keytrack and other controllable aspects. Sounded good, and is affordable, expected price is around €130 Euros3. SYNTHFEST 2019 - More On The Modal Argon8
Modal Electronics were showing two of their Argon 8 Wavetable synths - things are moving on, there are now 4 in the world - so still at production prototypes stage.4. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Isotonik Studios Control For Akai Fire - Soon Come
News from the Modal Electronics camp, the Argon8 firmware is still being worked on, with some advances in DSP efficiency meaning more is happening in the on board FX department.
Still aiming for November production, but probably later in the month as opposed to early. But still largely on track.
Jackson kindly gave us a glimpse of some of the new features and DSP work thats been going on.
Argon 8 is expected by the end of November at a retail price around £579.
Isotonik Studios spend a lot of their time figuring out what MIDI controllers work well with Ableton Live and construct custom scripts that will allow them to be used in ways that allow for excellent studio and live workflows. In this video we look at the way that new hardware can be hooked up. Using ClipEx Pro and the bindings feature, its possible to create your own complex, custom setups.5. SYNTHFEST 2019 - VCVRack Updates And More To Come
Also on show was the soon to be released set of functions including a Euclidian sequencer and control for the Akai Fire. Which is an FL Studio controller that's has been hijacked to work with live with some more clever scripting and a Max4 Live sequencer device.
Available soon via isotonikstudios.com
VCV Rack as we know hit its V1.0 earlier this year and as such started to become more highly featured. We caught up with Dale from module developer Valley and talked about the environment, and future plans.6. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Tranzient - VR Music Creation APP from AliveInTech
https://github.com/ValleyAudio
We saw some of the VR integration for Ableton Live from AliveInTech's Jim Simons a couple of years back. Since then VR headsets and hardware has reduced in price, making it more available, and so a new application has been developed which has a complete single software solution - with the VR, audio engine all in the same application.7. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Stylophone Gen R8
