Best Ambient Synth Shootout #48: Kawai K4r - Song 1

Published on Feb 28, 2018 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the Kawai K4r. It's a 16-voices, 8-part multitimbral 16-Bit PCM digital synthesizer. This time the song is quite minimal, like a repeating chant. So, just lay back and relax when you listen the song ;-)

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Kawai K4r - EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal goes via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.

To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

Ambient Analog Jam "Glory" System 1m + Eventide H9 Roland SE 02 MiniNova UltraNova

Published on Feb 28, 2018 Denis Polic

"A New Arrival in my basement studio: Eventide H9 Harmoniser. The best thing is that Eventide gives you a possibility to chose the algorythm you want and load it to the H9, so you can pick up the best from every famous Eventide pedal, like Space, Timefactor and Pitchfactor, just load the App on the IPad, and i can even set the parameter on it. Thanks a lot Eventide!!!! After i swiched the Roland System 1m on it, and chose the Blackhole algorythm, it was just kind of a glory feeling to hear the sound with those looong shimmer echoes, so i turned the cam on, and thats it. Everything was recorded on fly, so sorry for some mistakes in playing. Hope you would like it and share and subscribe, thanks!!!

Gear used (in order of apperance):

Roland System 1m lead sound
Novation MiniNova pad sound
Roland SE-02 first sequence
Moog Minitaur Bass sound
Roland TR-8 Rhytm section
Novation Circuit claps and hihats
Arturia Microbrute 2-nd sequence
Waldorf Rocket 3-rd sequence
Novation Ultranova 2-nd lead sound

Arturia BeatStep Pro and Keystep as main sequencer

No DAW or other computer stuff was involved in this setup, only me and my hardware.

Headphones highly recommended!!!"

"A more structured performance of the '1hr Magneto Patch' -- focusing on the arc and build within the musical form.

Patch Notes:
Primary voice is Mangrove filtered via Three Sisters' Low Pass. It's pitch CV is derived from a Turning Machine sequence, quantized by Instruo Harmonaig, and then arpeggiated using the ADDAC206 quad switch. The amplitude CV is being enveloped by Quadra with some scaling and offset via WMD SPO.

Blackwavetable, Telharmonic, and Rings supply a variety of drones, and rhythmic pings.

Sylicae EP Featuring Risset’s Harmonic Arpeggio Composed with ChucK

"Jean-Claude Risset’s harmonic arpeggio is a spectral composition technique that uses sine wave interference patterns. This technique allows you to create beautiful drone-like sound, over which occurs a downward cascading arpeggio of a specified subset of the harmonic series. The instrument’s timbre is similar to the sound produced by an overtone singer. Created by beating patterns that result from closely-spaced sinusoids (i.e. slightly detuned sine waves), Risset described the arpeggio gestures as 'spectral scans'"

How to bring you the famous 70s analog stringensemble sound in a Casio CZ synthesizer

Published on Feb 27, 2018 RetroSound

"(c) 2018 vintage synthesizer demo by RetroSound

part. 3 of the CASIO CZ sound tutorial [more posts here]
The famous 70s stringensemble sound.

Sure the CASIO CZ is no Solina or Logan but the sound very like the Farfisa String Orchestra or Elec String Orchestra.

It´s an experiment that show how can bring expensive sounds in cheap synths. It`s all about good sound programming.

The lush 70s string ensemble sound is one of the most iconic sounds in history of synthesizers with soul. Try it.

I used a bit Lexicon MPX delay and Roland SRV reverb here.

With a EHX small stone phase shifter can you create Jarre soundscapes."

Makenoise 0-Coast: Timbre Space 02

Published on Feb 27, 2018 C Nich0lls

"Short, sound exploration of a patch that was used for the 'heartbeat' percussion on the last 0-Coast Ambient video. Just demoing/exploring a sound as I found the patch generated an interesting texture.

Starting with the basic patch, note that the addition of the random generator both affects the sound and also creates an uneven rhythmic cycle. The rhythmic cycle can be adjusted by turning the pot on the voltage math as the 2 outputs are controlling Time on the SLOPE generator and DCY on the CONTOUR generator.

2 pedals are used (off camera). The first is a Strymon TimeLine delay and the second is the Red Panda bitmap. The Red Panda was also used on he previous video.

The patch can be seen at the start of the clip, but most of the fun comes from the random source. It doesn't have to be clocked at audio rates for this patch to work.

Adjusting Balance and Dynamics pots leads to different tones. Also play around with the main pitch to create different 'drums'.

Recorded in single take to Ableton Live. No further processing post guitar pedals."

Tales From The Rack no.5 - Eurorack Performance.

Published on Feb 27, 2018 Richard Lacy

"Hello. Another tale from the Eurorack and a piece which started out as a ‘reel’ for the Make Noise Morphagene, recorded beforehand with the PPG Wave 2.2.

Perhaps the notable thing about this piece, is that even though it’s a big patch, most of the modules aren’t even breaking a sweat. They’re just doing simple jobs. There are some definite Floydian tendencies here; influences come to the surface sometimes….

As ever, it’s one pass and no overdubs (see the end of the Patch Notes for mixing info).

I’ve tried to make this one a bit more interesting visually (still using an iPhone5 with a shattered screen and it always drifts out of sync with the audio, which is infuriating!). It can be difficult to see what modules are in the system from the main wide shot, so I thought I’d add some close ups. Also, I have no idea how to edit video, so it’s time to learn.

Thanks for listening. If you like what I’m doing, please like and subscribe. Your support is most welcome!

Patch Notes:
Doepfer MAQ 16/3 is the clock source.
Clock to 4MS rotating Clock Divider and Frequency Central Pocket Calculator and some multiples.

1. PPG Wave sampled into Morphagene. Played by a clock divider. Metropolis pitch CV is modulating the slide control. Output to AQA Dual State Variable Filter, then to the TipTop Z-DSP (Halls Of Valhalla).

2. Gate output of the Metropolis is playing the Atlantis (main bass). Pitch CV comes from the Stepper Acid, running on a very slow clock. There’s a Switched Multiple in the pitch CV path, meaning I can choose a static bass note, or kick in the full chord progression.

3. The Stepper Acid is also playing the chords. The post Switched Multiple pitch CV is going to a few places:
Shapeshifter in chord mode: Cello 1. Shape modulated by an LFO.
Three Doepfer VCOs are tuned to the rest of a chord, the third requiring an offset generator.
All signals go to a Ladik mixer, then to an Analogue Solutions Telemark Filter. The filtered signal finally ends up in the Rainmaker, giving a bit of space.

4. Plonk. This is the guitar-type sound. Fixed note and the gate comes from the 4MS RCD on the div-3 output. Plonk output goes to the 4MS DLD.

5. Something I’ve done before, but I like it… 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator. Bands tuned and locked. Band levels controlled by six Analogue Solutions AR Envelope Generators. The EGs are triggered from the outputs of of the A-149 Stored random Voltages.

6. Bass drum. Braids triggered by an Analogue Solutions SQ8.

7. Snare drum. Braids triggered by a Doepfer clock sequencer.

8. Hats. Doepfer white noise into a Telemark Filter. Doepfer ADSR and VCA doing the rest, triggered by the Turing Machine.

9. Perc. TipTop One triggered by the Turing Machine. The Turing Machine was locked throughout. I meant to alter the pattern partway through the track, but I forgot! All drum reverbs come from Pro Tools.

10. I still haven’t fallen out of love with Rings and Clouds in their most basic forms yet, so here they are doing their thing. Was determined not to use them, but I patched them in and they sounded ace. Doepfer Dark Time Sequencer is providing the notes and gates. Rings Position is being modulated by Tides, quite heavily towards the end. Rings is just repeating a four note sequence; it’s Clouds doing the time shifting and blurring.

11. The big filthy sound: pitch is coming from two Analogue Solutions SQ8 sequencers. Un-quantised, for more varied harmonics and going Evian a Doepfer Slew Limiter. There were only two Doepfer VCOs left by this point, so that’s what we’re using. Tuned in octaves, the square wave of one goes into the A-113 Subharmonic Generator, giving lower octaves and another intervals.
All these signals are mixed together, the intervals being a bit quieter, but their harmonic content is used in what comes next. It’s a lot of filtering!
First up is the AM Snowfall Filter, not taking much off the top, but there’s a thickness to the sound. Second is the Eowave Fluctuations Magnetiques. All four filters in use, with each one tuned to a different resonance, waiting to be ‘peaked’ by the changing notes. Third is the Dave Smith Character; this is where the big distortion is coming from. Lastly everything goes through an Analogue Solutions SY-03 for overall tone control.
By this stage, I’ve run out of reverbs and delays, so this is getting delay and reverb from Pro Tools.

12. Maths. Used as two envelope generators. These envelopes are fed into the ‘initial gain’ input of two Korg MS10s.
The first has fixed pitch, playing a high 7th. The second is playing root, sharp 5 and 7th. Notes from an SQ-8.
You can hear these gently fading in and out in a rather Floydian manner. External reverb and delay.

13. Korg MS20 has a sample and hold on the gate and is playing a low root note, used at both ends of the piece.

Nearly everything goes via a Mackie mixer (under the camera). I’m using this to bring parts in and out. From there, it goes to Pro Tools."

"This is NOT a Midimini with non-original board, but a rack containing a real vintage Model D Minimoog's circuit. The rack was hand assembled in the USA by Studio Electronics and is not available anymore. Comes with original manual. Its clean and cosmetically in amazing condition for its age.

For those who know the history of when Studio Electronics in the 80's was getting vintage Minimoogs and putting them into a rack format for moving around. The sound vibe is 100% Minimoog and indistinguishable from the Vintage sought after Minimoogs that go for 7-8k !

This unit has a genuine Minimoog Model D board inside. And added a new dedicated LFO in addition to the Midi. Real vintage Midimoog sounds with added features and MIDI capability. Works with any MIDI controller."

Hello Model D: Unboxing the Behringer Model D by Olivier Ozoux

Published on Feb 26, 2018 Olivier Ozoux

"This is my Behringer Model D, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Apparently there have been more than 20,000 copies pre-ordered, so I wasn't really planning to get one, but for some reason I got tempted because Musician's Friend had immediate stock, and it shipped 2 days later, which is actually before some of the pre-order stock have been delivered.

I've never owned a Moog before, so I had no classic expectations about the D, but I have to say, it's really hard to make this thing sound bad. Great addition to my setup.

Any resemblance in the into with a video from Red Means Recording is completely intentional, and totally hilarious. Stripped socks make excellent stage hands (feet?).

Korg KingKorg - Custom Patches by GEOSynths

1. Korg KingKorg - Custom Patches 1 to 25 - GEOSynths.com
"Now set up in my new Studio and recently picked up a KingKorg and thought i'd do some patches on it. For a purely Digital Synth or software in a box, it's a surprisingly good Synth.

Had to use 2 Unison voices for most things to get some "width" but it handles it really well. Anyway, I'm doing a full Bank of patches for it...here are the first 25 which are mainly Pad and evolving sounds, but there's also splits and stacked patches."

2. Korg KingKorg - Custom Patches 26 to 50 - GEOSynths.com
"2nd Batch of patches for the Korg KingKorg and I have to say, i'm really impressed with the Sound Engine on this and using the FX as part of the sound...not just an add-on."

3. Korg KingKorg - Custom Patches 51 to 75 - GEOSynths.com
"3rd batch of patches for the Korg KingKorg Set...Just one more to go and they will be released! I sometimes have to stop myself with making Pads and Evolving ones in particular, as it's so good at doing them. Damn fine Synth if you ask me."

5. Korg KingKorg - Custom Patches 76 to 100 - GEOSynths.com
So, here we are, the final batch of patches for the Korg KingKorg are completed. I've had lots of fun and a few frustrations making them, but overall it's a great sounding Synth.

OP-1 Ambient Noodles

Published on Feb 27, 2018 RemixSample

1. "This is not a song. I'm just doing some improvisation on the OP-1. Personally I'm not sure if I'd like to watch this type of content myself. The fiddling can get annoying to watch I guess so let me know if you are into these type of videos or not.

I hooked up the OP-1 to my DAW and split the stereo signal into two mono channels so I can use different vst effects on each channel by panning the different tracks on the OP-1 In this case I used Valhalla Shimmer and Soundtoys Crystallizer."

2. "Another ambient noodle recorded live. Same set up as in the last video, used Valhalla Shimmer and Soundtoys Crystallizer for effects. I wish the OP-1 had Shimmer built in. That would be pretty sweet. 4:00 is my favorite part. Being able to pitch the entire tape on the OP-1 is awesome for ambient stuff."

"We visit Mumdance's studio for an exclusive look at his exciting new module.

Mumdance’s musical influences are many, but top of the list are two things: modular synths and hardcore. He's managed to combine his love of both with his latest release, a Eurorack filter module designed with UK boutique studio ALM Busy Circuits, the MUM M8.

The inspiration for the MUM M8 is Akai’s S950 sampler from 1988, whose unique filter sound is behind many classic jungle and hardcore records of the era. We visited Mumdance at his home studio to get an exclusive inside look at how the module – right down to the "rave baggie" the screws come in.

via this auction. She also has a minty TB-303 listed here.

"Lovely Minimoog Model D, Williamsville era. I'm not 100% sure of the year, I was told around 1977 or 78 judging by the serial number (8538). It was just tuned & serviced a few weeks ago by the awesome synth tech Nick Montoya of Moog Music. It is fully and beautifully functional; he also replaced the mod wheels.

A few cosmetic snags for the sake of transparency - The power cord is frayed at the top, and the back plastic panel is ever so slightly lifted by the headphone jack. There are a few slight dings around the body. Sounds absolutely beastly & perfect though. No crackly pots.

Please message me with any questions. I adore this synth and loathe to sell, but I don't use it enough to justify keeping it as I now have another Model D and a Voyager (I know, very different but still.). I very much want this synth to go to a loving home that will appreciate it and use it.

I used this Model D on I Speak Machine's "Zombies 1985" release ( the songs "Shame", "Blood From a Stone" and "Demon Days"). Search Spotify, you'll find them. - Tara"

011//Before Sunrise - a Moog Mother 32 self-generating track

Published on Feb 26, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A moody, melodic, self-generating patch on a Mother 32 sent through an Eventide Space modechoverb reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on banddelay setting. The only other processing applied is a slight cut of the higher frequencies with an EQ in Ableton, to tame some of the filter resonance.

I created this patch with the thought 'can you get the Mother 32 to pan left and right without other gear?'. The answer is, you can, using the VC Mix feature! Switch the VCA to 'On' and the volume to full, patch the VCF output to the Mix 1 input, and then patch the VCA output and VC Mix output to the stereo inputs of your pedal. Patching the LFO triangle output to the VCA CV input and the VC Mix Ctrl input will make the LFO fade the Mother 32 between the 2 outputs.

I also used Veils to attenuate the signal coming out of the Mother 32 so that it wouldn't be too hot for the Eventide pedals.

The patch is semi-random; I created the sequence, but everything else is left to the whims of the modulation. The name comes from the resonance of the filter - I thought it sounded a bit like birdsong, as if dawn is about to break.

If you want to recreate this patch, you can find it here:

Introducing ES01 Rack Extension Based on the Yamaha CS-01

Published on Feb 16, 2018 Ekssperimental Sounds Studio

"The ES01 is a faithful recreation of a beloved analog classic. While the hardware which the ES01 is based on was originally marketed as an entry-level synth, it is still a popular tool of many professional artists for its ease of use in getting great sounds, particularly leads and bass lines.

The ES01 is not a 1:1 emulation - it also has additional features like Sub Oscillator, Unison and last but not least, Polyphony. The Touch Data Programmer with its Global Settings and modulation matrix together with the CV connectivity of the Reason Rack gives ES01 massive tweaking possibilities. This all makes the ES01 unique and quite capable of producing many classic analog synth sounds like fat basses, vibrant pads, synthetic arpeggios and leads that cut through the mix.

Ekssperience the sound of the past with the possibilities of the future with the ES01 Analog Synthesizer."

Published on Feb 13, 2018 Jaak Jensen

"The OB-Xa is a massive analog synthesizer with digital control, allowing for highly sophisticated and complex sounds while still maintaining an analog signal path. It has been fully restored and is currently for sale. It includes a very well padded and durable flight case that is in exceptional condition. See the video above for the condition of the unit and to get a taste of how it sounds.

0:00 - Intro
1:18 - A demonstration of the patches currently stored in memory
2:31 - Dual sawtooth patch with subtle portamento and filtering
3:02 - Dual square wave patch for an ambient pad
4:05 - Electric piano/rhodes/wurlitzer sound
4:40 - Wood block percussion sounds
4:54 - Mellotron-like synth pad
5:31 - VERY huge and gritty-sounding unison patch with pitch bending
5:58 - White noise demonstration and filtering
6:30 - Sparkly-sounding synth piano
7:02 - Dual sawtooth sound demonstrating the snappiness of the envelopes

We are hoping to sell this locally to someone in Minnesota but are open to offers outside the state if the offer seems legitimate and reasonable. If you would like to purchase this unit, please contact us at the following email addresses:
jens1438@umn.edu and eddieaudio@gmail.com

We are currently seeking offers in the $4950-$5950 range.

This particular one has 8 voices which can be split, layered and stored. They all featured patch memories in varying degrees. This one has 4 banks of 8 for a total of 32 patches. All models of OB-Xa featured the new Curtis chips which offered great stability for an analog synth and they are attributed to its great filters and sounds.

The OB-X was very similar to the OB-Xa except that its voices could not be split or layered and, more significantly, the OB-X had a lowpass-only discrete SEM 12dB/oct state variable filter, which had a great and classic Oberheim sound. The OB-Xa changed that in an attempt to economize manufacturing and increase stability by switching to CEM3320 Curtis chips for its filters. The Xa offered two switchable filter modes: 12 dB/oct (2-pole) or 24 dB/oct (4-pole). When compared with the OB-X, people will often say that the OB-Xa is capable of nastier, grittier, more powerful, and immediate sounds.

Splitting the keyboard mode separates the OB-Xa into two 4-voice synths with two available patches. The Layer mode plays the two patches simultaneously. There are also some added effect sources, perfect for any analog polysynth, including portamento, unison, sample & hold, chord memory and three LFO's!"

Waldorf Blofeld demo / microtracks

Published on Feb 26, 2018 Panu Savolainen

"As an long time Waldorf user (since 90's) I thought to make demo of Waldorf Blofeld (keyboard). It's not one-shot patch demo. It's bunch of multitracked microtracks. So you probably find better demos for individual sounds. I wasn't going to do one-track demo but short tracks mixed so well together, so it came 24 minute ambient-type song.

Every short song are played straight to the audio. No MIDI, sequencing, arpeggiators or metronome used. Everything is coming from Blofeld. Not sure but sounds should be factory patches which I edited a bit and used realtime controllers like aftertouch and modwheel + knobs for filters, envelopes and effects. I used only patches which imo sounded good or was inspirational."

Haken Continuum in depth review, and what is the Matrix...?

Published on Feb 26, 2018 loopop

"The Haken Continuum Fingerboard is a combination of an extremely sensitive surface and and powerful and complex synthesizer, tailor made to take advance of its expressive sensors. The Continuum has been refined over the past few decades by Lippold Haken, and includes an on-board synthesizer called the EaganMatrix - created by musician and sound designer Edmund Eagan.

This review goes in depth into why the Continuum stands out as a unique instrument and the various ways it can be played. I also explain in detail how its internal synth is designed around using the surface gestures to impact sound design.

The EaganMatrix contains synthesis engines far beyond traditional subtractive and FM synths, and also includes various physical modeling and additive capabilities. Presets using those various engines are shown."

LIVE Miami Vice style old school 80s + Tutorial

Published on Feb 26, 2018 Espen Kraft

"I wanted to make something in the ballpark of Jan Hammers more slow , dark, beautiful and melancholic themes from the show.

I came up with this track called "Sheeba", and I rely heavily on digital synths and samplers from the mid 80s. Some analogs too!

The chords and sections that make up the track is explained in detail after the performance of the track so don't turn it off too soon!

The performance is held together by Roland MC50 sequencer that plays the Emax II Liquid Stack guitars while I play other parts. Half of the track is me playing the Emax live.

Bass is off the Roland S-10 sampler played live as is the Korg DW-8000s fairlight pad/strings.

The Yamaha TX802 is also played live over MIDI on the MiniNova.

Additional pads/strings and Fairlight flute is from the Roland Juno 2 and the Yamaha DX7, sequenced.

The simple but effective drums comes off the Akai S1000.

Strymon BlueSky and TC flashback handles reverb and delays.

Everything is going into a couple of Yamaha 01W digital mixers (a Behringer analog mixer does some of the synths) and piped optically into the Audient ID14 soundcard and into the DAW for recording.

"BOUM is a full analog stereo warming unit, combining an easy-to-use compressor, a versatile distortion generator and a smooth low-pass filter. BOUM is based on an original and unique circuit, including the following stages :

INPUT GAIN : boost your signal up to +18db to adapt BOUM to various signal levels, and also improve the distortion content and the compression sensitivity.

COMPRESSOR : with a single knob, control the 3 essential parameters of a compressor, threshold, ratio and makeup gain, without thinking about how a compressor works ! The ratio ranges from 1:1 (no compression) to inf. :1 (limiter), but also negative compression up to 1: -1!
