"I purchased this new and direct from Love Hulten. He is currently hand-crafting (with the help of machines, too) and selling these gorgeous, impeccably designed synths.

My Noistation is as perfect as it was the day it arrived.

I ordered mine in May, received it, in June...and it sat. Then I opened it, set it up, then I put it away - as happens with many things around here. Last week, I took it out, started messing with it, started deep diving with the programming using AXOLOTI, which is the freeware modular object/patch making software you use to make your own patches.

I am no programmer - but it was easy and fun. There are built in tutorials that build in complexity. It’s great. The thing is, I’m selling a lot of my nice things because it takes me months to get around to using them because of the constraints of my work."

See this post for a video and details on the Noistation.

"We paired the Malekko Manther mono-synth with the Moog DFAM on drums for this video. Since both of these synths have built in sequencers you can create a jam by just synching the two together. The Manter has SH-101 style architecture with extra features like a tunable sub oscillator, wave-folder and built in delay effect. The DFAM has two oscillators as well as a noise generator and Moog ladder filter. The DFAM features percussive envelopes and interesting routing options to make many different drum and synth sounds.

Excuse the mess of my fingers! Black from oil. I spent most of the afternoon servicing my bike (new tyres/tubes, general cleaning/adjusting etc). As hard as I've tried, the oil won't budge! It'll fade off in a few days, I'm sure."

I've done quite extensive research into the inner workings of the Casio CZ series synthesizers and found out there are quite a few oddities that make those synths sound like they do. I've incorporated all these little details in Dradique, while also adding my own twist to things. All in all I'm very satisfied with the results, though there are some minor bugs still."

A Phatty Duel - Sub Phatty vs Little Phatty

Published on Aug 31, 2018 SYNTHWAY

"This is a non scientific video comparing these awesome synths.

For lack of more time with both, I couldn't actually compare several things that I find needed (such as two oscillator added) and what one could do and the other couldn't (and it goes both ways, even with the Sub being the feature-rich one).

I just sold my Sub Phatty because I didn't have room for it anymore after moving. I loved it! I even have my name on Moog's official website for some patches I developed for the Editor (IC folder).

I hope you enjoy what I could compare in the time I had at my disposal. It was made on the fly without any sort of "scripting" and I do get lost/forget stuff along the way. Not comparing the detuning on both was a big mistake for example. Even so, I still think that it gives an idea of the differences between them.

Be nice on your comments, I'm not trying to say one is better than the other - the Little Phatty is the single instrument I'll never sell. It was a great gift from my mother, and I'll never part with it.

I'll gladly answer any questions you have. Cheers!"

Dave Smith Instruments Rebrands as Sequential

Update: Photo from last night’s announcement party added. It’s the West Coast Synth Brain Trust. Tom Oberheim, Roger Linn, Dave Smith, Dave Rossum, and John Chowning. Quite the group!

"Sequential" (minus "Circuits") is officially back! We saw the brand name come back with the Prophet-6, but the it was still under Dave Smith Instruments. DSI the company is now officially Sequential. It's great to see the Sequential brand name back. You might recall Yamaha owned the rights but gave it back to Dave Smith back in 2015.

The official press release follows:

Dave Smith Instruments Officially Becomes “Sequential”

Dave Smith Returns to Sequential Brand to Mark 40th Anniversary of Prophet-5 Poly Synth

San Francisco, CA—August 31, 2018—In a move auspiciously timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of his legendary Prophet-5 poly synth, Dave Smith today announced that Dave Smith Instruments will rebrand itself as “Sequential” — reclaiming the mantle of Smith’s original, ground-breaking company. Going forward, all products and services will bear the Sequential® brand.

Company founder Dave Smith explained the decision: “It seems incredible, but this month marks the 40th anniversary of the Prophet-5. That’s a huge milestone. And it felt like the right time for us to completely restore the Sequential brand and bring our journey as a company full circle. The name change also reflects the fact that our instruments are the result of a team effort. It’s not just me, it’s the entire company.”

Founded by Smith in 1974 as “Sequential Circuits,” the original incarnation of the company quickly established itself as a major innovator in the then-nascent field of electronic instruments. In 1978, Sequential Circuits’ flagship keyboard, the Prophet-5, took the music world by storm as the world’s first fully-programmable polyphonic synthesizer—and the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor.

Numerous other ground-breaking products soon followed, including the hugely popular Pro-One monosynth, the Prophet 600 (the world’s first MIDI-equipped instrument), the Six Trak (the first multi-timbral synthesizer), and the Prophet VS (the first instrument to feature digital vector synthesis). Sequential Circuits ceased operations in 1987 and the company’s name (shortened to “Sequential” in the mid-1980s) and assets were acquired by Yamaha. Smith went on to consult for Yamaha and Korg, developing the Wavestation and other innovations.

In 2002, Smith established Dave Smith Instruments to concentrate on solo hardware designs and released the Evolver hybrid analog/digital synthesizer. The DSI product lineup steadily grew to include the Prophet ’08, Mopho, Tetra, Tempest drum machine, Prophet 12, Pro 2, Prophet-6, OB-6, Prophet Rev2, and the Prophet X.

In 2015, with the encouragement of Roland’s Founder, Ikutaro Kakehashi, Yamaha returned the Sequential name to Smith in a gesture of goodwill. “Once Kakehashi-san and Yamaha enabled us to re-acquire the Sequential name, I knew we’d fully adopt it again when the time was right. That time has arrived,” said Smith. “The best part is that we have the same sense of excitement and enthusiasm for making the world a more creative place as we did 40 years ago. Sequential is back, better than ever.”

About Sequential
Originally launched in 2002 as Dave Smith Instruments, Sequential is helmed by legendary musical instrument designer and Grammy® award winner Dave Smith. Dave’s many accomplishments include the creation of the Prophet-5 — the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer—and his legacy as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).

The company’s products are used by an ever-growing roster of well-known musicians and are available from music retailers worldwide. Instruments include the Prophet-6, OB-6, Prophet Rev2, Prophet X, and the Tempest analog drum machine. Sequential is based in San Francisco, where its instruments are also manufactured. Dave Smith Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Prophet-5 Poly Synth

Famed Instrument Designer Celebrates 40 Years Since Debut of Industry-Changing Poly Synth

San Francisco, CA—August 31, 2018—In a private event held in historic North Beach, San Francisco, Dave Smith and a group of music industry friends, insiders, and artists today celebrated the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5—the world’s first fully-programmable polyphonic synthesizer. To mark the occasion, Smith announced that Dave Smith Instruments has rebranded itself as “Sequential”—re-embracing the name and legacy of Smith’s original, pioneering electronic instrument company.

Founded by Smith in 1974 as “Sequential Circuits,” the original incarnation of the company forever changed music technology with the advent of the Prophet-5, which broke new ground as not only the first polyphonic synthesizer to enable players to store and recall presets, but also as the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor.

The instrument debuted at the 1978 Winter NAMM show to a largely astonished audience of musicians and industry competitors such as ARP, Moog, and Oberheim, who comprised the bulk of a market almost exclusively made up of a very few pioneering American companies. The instrument featured 5 voices and a 5-octave keyboard with a case crafted out of figured koa wood. The enclosure housed a straightforward, knob-based interface/voice architecture that musicians could easily grasp: two hard-syncable oscillators with simultaneous triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waves, a robust 24 dB per-octave, resonant low-pass filter, individual 4-stage envelopes for filter and amplitude, and the innovative Poly Mod section that provided simple-yet-powerful modulation capabilities.

Manufactured from 1978 to 1984 with an initial price of $3995 (about $15,000 in today’s dollars) the Prophet-5 proved so successful that its sound not only defined popular music for years, but its design provided the blueprint for what a poly synth could be. Virtually every major artist of the period used the Prophet-5 on stage or in studio, while its iconic sound provided the backbone of countless songs.

Dave Smith described the early days of the Prophet-5: “The demand for the Prophet-5 was incredible. For the first several years we simply couldn’t keep up. Artists and their management would call our offices begging us to sell them whatever we had. It was a crazy time.” As analog synthesizers gradually gave way to cheaper digital instruments in the 1980s, Sequential eventually phased out the Prophet-5. The final unit to roll off the production line is still owned by Smith.

The company ceased operations in 1987 and its name (shortened to “Sequential” in the mid-1980s) and assets were acquired by Yamaha. Smith went on to consult for Yamaha and Korg, developing the Wavestation and other ground-breaking instruments.

When Yamaha returned the Sequential name to Smith in a gesture of goodwill in 2015, Smith and company created a successor to the original instrument in the form of the Sequential-branded Prophet-6, a 6-voice re-imagining of the Prophet-5 with an all-analog signal path and discrete VCOs and filters. Not surprisingly it has proved to be as popular with musicians as its legendary predecessor. In an era filled with digital emulations of vintage instruments, Smith says he’s not surprised: “To me, a hardware synth has a soul. It inspires you to interact with it in a musical way that I often find lacking in software instruments and many all-digital instruments. Judging from the enduring success of the Prophet-5 and Prophet-6 and their successors, a lot of people feel the same way. That’s very gratifying.”

Regarding returning to his roots, Smith had this to say: “It’s amazing that this month marks the 40th anniversary of the Prophet-5. It’s such a landmark achievement that I felt it was the right time to fully restore the Sequential brand and bring our journey full circle. The name change also reflects the fact that our instruments are the result of a team effort. It’s not just me, it’s the entire company.” He continued: “We have the same excitement and enthusiasm for making inspiring instruments as we did when the Prophet-5 was first created. Sequential is back. And we’re better than ever.”

via wikipedia:

"A frequency synthesizer is an electronic circuit that generates a range of frequencies from a single reference frequency. Frequency synthesizers are used in many modern devices such as radio receivers, televisions, mobile telephones, radiotelephones, walkie-talkies, CB radios, cable television converter boxes satellite receivers, and GPS systems. A frequency synthesizer may use the techniques of frequency multiplication, frequency division, direct digital synthesis, frequency mixing, and phase-locked loops to generate its frequencies. The stability and accuracy of the frequency synthesizer's output are related to the stability and accuracy of its reference frequency input. Consequently, synthesizers use stable and accurate reference frequencies, such as those provided by crystal oscillators..."

I spotted an auction for a Touch Talker TT-DB below. I was curious what it sounded like so I did a quick search on YouTube and found the above. It's $299 on iTunes: LAMP Words For Life - Prentke Romich Company! The original hardware version below utilized Smoothtalker or DECTalk speech synthesis, and was built to interface with the Apple IIe, II+, and IBM PC. Not sure what the iOS version uses - new samples, samples of the original, or the actual synth engine of the original. Another interesting bit of synthesis history...

Gestrument Pro Teaser #2 – Grooveboxing

Published on Aug 31, 2018 Gestrument

"Another teaser?! Yes, another teaser!

This time, we've only used the built in effects and instruments in Gestrument Pro to build this warehouse-friendly Techno preset.

This preset is heavily inspired by groovebox-style techno with pattern sequencers running the drums and along with a few other sounds. The bassline is influenced by eurorack sequencing and utilises random sources to generate both rhythm as well as melody quantized to a pre-defined scale.

To the left of the screen you can see our new performance sliders. These can be mapped to almost any parameter available in the app for instant access during live performances or even automated using the loop function. In this Preset we use the sliders for mixing, effects and rhythm/melody generation.

I believe this life is indeed under a curse and that we all long to be set free from that which we are bound under.

Fever Ray producer Christoffer Berg takes us inside his stunning Gothenburg studio

Published on Aug 30, 2018 FACTmagazine

"A synth haven in the heart of Sweden.

Christoffer Berg may not be a familiar name but you’ve most likely heard his work: as well production and engineering for Depeche Mode, he’s worked extensively with both The Knife and Fever Ray.

We were given the opportunity to visit his Gothenburg studio and jumped at the chance, having heard rumors of his one-of-a-kind synth collection, which includes one of the very first synthesizers made in Europe.

Christoffer also took us next door into Svenska Grammofon Studion, a famous recording space that counts Foals, The Hives and Jose Gonzales among the artists who have made music inside it."

Arcade Sounds with the Moots (DFAM, Mother-32 & Freqbox)

Published on Aug 30, 2018 HardtekStudios

"Moog! Please don't take our Moogerfoogers away!
This jam I am getting some hard & nasty classic arcade sounds by routing the Moog Mother-32 thru the Moogerfooger Freqbox. The Moog DFAM is providing a sides scrolling drum sequence for the arcade sounds to crackle against. Lots of patches cables run between the M-32 & DFAM and the M-32 is using it's Envelope and LFO to further modulate the Freqbox! If you like what the Freqbox is doing here, then snatch one up as soon as you can, because Moog Music and announced the discontinuation of the entire Moogerfooger line."

New Noiro-ze VCF & VCA Eurorack Module from nonlinearcircuits

Published on Aug 30, 2018 cirtcele

via nonlinearcircuits

"This module uses the same blackbox technique as the Shat-noir Phaser.
The VCF is based on the Steiner diode VCF but this one uses LDRs rather than diodes and a CV control system to suit. The nice thing about this filter is you can feed different signals to the LP, BP & HP inputs then surf between them with your CV, quite different from regular filters.
The VCA is really there to use up a spare op amp and is based on the Korg PS3100 VCA, works very well for what it is.

PCB set = USD24
Panel = USD22
assembled = USD210"

AJH Synth V Shape (wave twisting, distorting and folding)

Published on Aug 30, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Here's the new AJH Synth V Shape. A wave twist and distortion unit. It offers skewing/PWM-like sounds that almost get to rectification and folding like tones up top and then underneath we get a soft or hard clipping distortion with an added soft wave folder. The device is on the slightly softer side which keeps it very musical without getting too harsh in it's shaping or distortion. Couple it with the Wave Swarm or Ring SM and there's a tonne of potential shaping from the AJH range.

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS

00:00 Welcome, hello, patch previews "what's to come"

01:05 Features, wave twisting, PWM-like FX, distortion, soft/hard clipping and wave folding run down along with the routing options.

02:39 Shape/Twist sound demo - triangle waves (with and without modulation)

03:52 Shape/Twist sound demo - saw waves (with and without modulation)

04:16 Distortion/Folder demo - triangle wave and soft clipping "come make sine waves!"

04:40 Distortion/Folder demo - triangle wave and hard clipping

04:54 Shaper into the Distortion

05:30 Distortion/Folder demo - wave folding with Batman ears. Looking at both soft and hard clipping stages as part of the folding.

06:00 Modulation the distortion/fold and doing so up to audio rates.

06:48 Creating a weird shaping VCA. This uses the distortion section like a VCA and using envelopes we can get some quirky VCA like functionality. The shaper is used to make PWM-like FX.

09:43 Using the V Shape to twist, fold and distort LFO signals.

11:57 Shaping envelope CV signals

13:17 A distortion like FX device for processing drums. Drive, glitch and fuzziness comes out :)

14:58 A new piece of music to release from this thing! Using both processors in the unit as a parallel processing unit to create dual layers to spread around a patch.

17:32 Using the V Shape to twist and distort already moving/morphing waves. I use a lo-fi morphing wavetable at the input for even further modulation and animation.

19:14 Dual channel functionality. Using one side of this for bass sound and the other for a melodic lead line."

Torsten Desktop End Caps for Behringer Model D & Neutron

You might recall the custom case from Torsten previously posted here. Torsten wrote in to let us know several cases have been shipped and he has developed DCAPS or desktop end caps that can be used to either fill the end spaces in his custom case, or as simple desktop end panels. You can of course mount extra eurorack modules in the extra spaces of his case.

"For re-using the original metal case of the Behringer Neutron or Model-D, I developed the DCAPS. They will be included in each DCASE order which increases the single 89HP row of the DCASE ONE to two rows and the two rows of the DCASE TWO to three rows. The DCAPS can be also used as stand-alone tabletop in combination with the Keystep."

Torsten released the DCAPS under Creative Commons license on Thingiverse here.

Below you can see that cases can be stacked as well.

Roland V-Synth Patches

"V-Synth patches. New. Never installed them."

Update: the samples appear to be of the Kinetic Sound System. I thought it was just the maker of the disk and it slipped my mind. Thanks goes to swissdoc for catching it.

This is one of those things likely I only found interesting. Note the Roland logo. First, it reminded me of Duran Duran's 1st album & early singles during the Planet Earth period. Just thought it was interesting from a design perspective. Where did it originate? Second, I don't recall seeing this particular Roland logo before. I was curious if this was a valid Roland logo or one made up by someone for the CD. I have no idea if it is an official CD from Roland. I ran a quick search on Roland logos and found it, but... It appears to be associated with their printer products? Via Sign Shop: "Currently celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, Roland DGA Corp. has once again been recognized by InfoTrends, Inc. as the leading North American provider of digital printers for the durable graphics market. According to the InfoTrends 2010 Quarterly Wide-Format Tracking Shipping Project report, Roland sold nearly twice as many printers in 2010 priced under $30,000 into the North American marketplace as its nearest competitors."

I didn't know Roland made printers.

Anyway, consider this your random synth trivia for the day...

If you've seen this particular logo used for other Roland synth products, feel free to leave a comment.

No vintage synth but a synthesizer with vintage sound.
For me is the Yamaha AN1x virtual analog synthesizer the best example for very high quality analog like sound in a cheap and ugly hardware. I ever wantend an AN2x with the same synth engine but with better hardware, more real-time knobs and more nice looking design. A very underrated synth.
In my opinion is the sound quality way better as from modern analog and virtual analog synths.

In the demo can your hear a few sounds from the Yamaha AN1x. Enjoy.
