"I spent too much money on this. I told myself I shouldn't get it. I knew I didn't need it. I knew it wouldn't add anything to my setup. I knew it would be a project... And yet, I bought it. The Jupiter 6.

The Jupiter 6 belonged to someone I know and have bought other things from. When we started our discussion, only 2 issues were known. The Master 2 knob and the ENV2 keytracking weren't working. I figured I could fix this. Then VCO MOD ENV-1 tracking wasn't working. Then, the unit wouldn't power on at all. They managed to get the power working again (the switch itself wasn't working). So I decided to go ahead with the purchase.

I drove an hour to pick it up.

I got it home and, yes, those issues persisted, but I tested it out and decided right then that this was indeed a mistake. My Prophet 10 is a better synth with less issues. Anyway, a few days passed and I decided it was time to open it up. I replaced the power switch. I tore out the 2 faders that weren't working. I cleaned them and fixed them. I cleaned out a few others that seemed to have intermittent issues.

All seemed well... until I made this video. It was at the very end of this video when I realized that Oscillator 2 has one voice that isn't working correctly. The Pulse wave is silent. Digging deeper into this, I've found that IC36C pins 4 and 5 are not receiving any voltage. This is voice C (or 3). Unfortunately, so far this is beyond my skillset to fix, but it seems something (hopefully common between these two pins, both related to Pulse wave and PWM) is not working. It's not a bad chip, because I swapped chips and the issue persists on the same location, i.e., it didn't follow the chip. One possibility is that this location is not soldered properly, and those two aren't receiving any information. I'm not sure. I'd have to delve deeper, but again, I'm just out of my depths here.

So what are my thoughts now? I'm frustrated that I put so much money into something that really needed more work than I originally thought... But then again, I've also learned a lot, like how to repair faders, how to do some basic IC chip testing.

I am shocked by people saying it's 'cold'. I don't know what that is about at all. Doesn't sound cold at all to me. It sounds like a proper Roland synth. But wow it has a ton of range. I didn't properly capture it here, but a few sounds I have made sounded like hitting a stringed instrument... it's like you can feel the electricity, where I don't often feel that way with the Prophet 10. It's really a great sounding synth. To me, it retains everything I liked about my Juno 6 and added a lot more. The only thing I really miss about the Juno 6 is the better feeling faders and the smoother cutoff when modulated.

All I can say is - I can't wait to have this thing back to 100%.

"An impromptu song that started on hardware synths and eurorack, and was finished by adding some extra sounds in the box.

This is a great example of why I love both hardware (it's inspiring!) and software (it has incredible power and can get the job finished!). Here, I was just trying out a new eurorack drum sequencer, decided to send the kick trig to the Erebus, and then began noodling on top with the MiniFreak. I wrote the song before I even knew I was writing a song. And while it was super inspiring, I could tell that I'd need a bunch more instruments to make the song feel finished. Rather than expanding the table and slowing down the creative process, I captured the inspiration already there and finished off the job in Reason afterward. It was definitely the right approach.

"The Jomox MBase 11 is a one-stop-shop for achieving some of the fattest analog kicks around. Yes, even fatter than their previous MBase01 model—though it sounds distinctly different enough that the two could be used in tandem to great effect. The module can cover 808 and 909 territory and beyond. It features a dedicated LFO with eight different waveforms, such as a true sine that can be used to create envelopes. But make no mistake, the MBase 11 is more than just as simple kick generator, it is a fully-fledged drum synthesizer. The unit’s compression parameter alters the thickness of the decay and provides a variable gate time for different attacks.

All this means that the MBase can also be used for limited bass duties if desired. Cranking the decay allows tones and pitch to be played across a keyboard, with a range of three octaves. Additionally, the kick can be triggered via trigger input, offering an effective means for drummers to incorporate the module into their performances."

They are simple, small, affordable and beginner friendly DIY kits that all provide a range of tones from more subtle to more aggressive distortion. The Mini Drive and Twin Drive are based on the external input stage of the classic Minimoog Model D where as the London Drive is based on the input stage of the EMS VCS3 and Synthi AKS.

This video was recorded during my first couple days with the ISE-NIN, which is the best sounding polysynth I've ever owned. I started with the presets and I'm partial to the 'vintage' bank. I did this video in a hurry so I apologize for it being unpolished- I was just so excited to get some sounds of the ISE-NIN online because there's not enough demos of it.

The synth is not without faults (mostly little bugs that could maybe be fixed in a firmware update) but I'm glad I bought it. It's an outstanding instrument of the highest caliber. I'm hoping its quality shines through my amateurish video."

"The Doepfer Drehbank is a programmable universal MIDI controller with 64 knobs. Each of its knobs can send any MIDI message, including Control Change, Pitch Bend, Aftertouch, Note On, and SysEx messages. You can use the Drehbank to get instant hands-on access to any MIDI parameter in almost any piece of MIDI gear, including new and old synthesizers, software and VST synths, rack effects, sound modules, DAWs, and more!

The Drehbank comes with presets for ReBirth, General MIDI mixing, and Yamaha groove boxes. The Drehbank also has a snapshot feature and two user defined banks for 128 total controls per setup. It ships with 8 factory setups: 2 Rebirth, 2 Rmx1, controllers 1-64 (MIDI channel 1), controllers 65-128 (MIDI channel 1), selected Controllers (MIDI channel 1), and a GM mixer (MIDI channel 1-16). In addition to MIDI IN/OUT, there are 8 CV inputs for external control voltages (0...+5V) and/or foot controllers. This allows you to control MIDI parameters FROM your older vintage CV gea,r or as Doepfer would prefer, from their analog A-100 synth modules.
