Confusion Studios Announces Dedicated MIDI Controllers for the Yamaha Reface DX for iPad

"Two new, standalone iPad editions of the award-winning professional MIDI controller platform bring MIDI control to the Reface DX

New York, NY – February 14, 2017 – Confusion Studios announced two new MIDI controller apps for iPad, both of which will be available for download from the Apple App Store on Wednesday, March 1, 2017: MDDX1 and MDDX2.

Both of the new apps are MIDI controllers for the Yamaha Reface DX. Yamaha released the Reface DX – a portable, FM-synthesis-based keyboard – in 2015 to critical acclaim. Each of the new apps is based on a user-created layout for MIDI Designer Pro 2; each has a unique approach to controlling the Reface DX.

The Editor: MDDX1 by Helfried

MDDX1: Voice Editor for Reface DX by Helfried highlights this users-author’s eye for design, a deep attention to detail, and a desire to push the underlying platform – MIDI Designer Pro 2 – to do new things. It allows for control of every parameter on the Reface DX and provides surprising new control vistas. The App extends the reface DX’s interface, providing a much-needed algorithms display, Master Tune, Transpose, Randomize and other new sections.

MDDX1 will run on any iPad with iOS 9.3 or better, and will be available on March 1, 2017 for download for $9.99. The app purchase may be applied towards a bundle purchase including MIDI Designer Pro 2.

Performance Tool: MDDX2 by Ibo Kai

MDDX2: Performance Tool for Reface DX by Ibo Kai is an additional, performance- focused interface for the Reface DX. As the author of the layout puts it, 'This layout is pretty simple, just one page shows all the available functions. It is mainly what you find in the 'FM' keypad of the synth: frequencies, levels and feedback settings separately per operator plus the algorithm select.' In addition, Ibo Kai added an Amp Mode section. This auxiliary controller for the Reface DX is intended for live and studio performance, where a full-blown editor is not practical.

MDDX2 will run on any iPad with iOS 9.3 or better, and will be available on March 1, 2017 for download for $3.99. The app purchase may be applied towards a bundle purchase including MIDI Designer Pro 2.

Two New Standalone, Dedicated Apps

MIDI Designer Author and Confusion Studios CEO Dan Rosenstark notes, 'Both editors show the layout authors – Helfried and Ibo Kai – flexing design muscle and pushing the MIDI Designer platform to work in new ways. Each is a dedicated tool for working with the Reface DX and each provides a surprising and useful new interface for this small keyboard. Additionally, both provide new users with an entry point into the MIDI Designer platform at a low price.'

MDDX1 and MDDX2 join the four existing standalone MIDI Designer apps for dedicated control: MIDI Designer XW: Casio XW Solo Synth Controller, MD77: Voice Editor for Yamaha SY77/TG77 by Ibo Kai, MDClav: Clavinova Controller by Craig Knudsen and MDXG: XG Sound Set Controller by Craig Knudsen."

Oberheim OB-X live sound demo 2017

Published on Jan 7, 2017 Ian o'Brien

"This is a very early 1979 model OB-X fully restored, doesn't even have the oberheim logo on it.
Here's a little improv to show you how it sounds.
Just a simple mono delay for FX, everything else flat.
This is, in my opinion, the best of the early analog polysynths.
But you be the judge! Comments please :)

Tiptop Audio Officially Introduces “ONE” Sample Playback Eurorack Module

Tiptop Audio "ONE" from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

"ONE brings organic sound and super low latency sample playback to the modular. It differs from other sample players in that it handles the digital audio bits as a continuously manipulated electrical flow, a feature inspired by our analog knowhow. This unique core makes ONE truly integral within the Tiptop percussive modular ecosystem thanks to a lightweight and responsive digital circuit with a very analog feel.

ONE brings a world of colors to the modular right out of the package. We have invited some of the best sound designers in the Industry to create professional sound libraries with content tailored to the unique sonic framework of the modular synthesizer and that fully takes advantage of ONE’s unique qualities. To start with, ONE comes with a SD card loaded with a free set of 60 sounds designed by Glitchmachines. More cards are available to purchase separately each containing carefully selected material with up to 256 sound files. Using your own sample libraries or recordings is easy too, just copy 16 or 24bit mono WAV files onto the SD card, pop the card into ONE and go.

ONE offers several modes of operation, with the primary being the super low latency Trigger mode that retrieves audio data off the SD card adding no artificial processing such as click removal, crossfading, eq or gain normalization. In this mode, it’s a highly transparent player up to 24 bit 96kHz with no interpolation of the audio data: what you put in is what you get out. With a delay as low as 0.25ms from the moment the trigger hits, ONE offers harmonically dense, clear and detailed audio with a great rhythmic feel.

ONE handles external CV through a user selectable multifunction jack. Pitch is the main control with two modes available: Free pitch allows for fine tuning of the playback rate, great for adding subtle vibrato or wild tape speed effects; Quantized pitch maps CV to the standard 12 tone system over 3.5 octaves and is ideal for melodic content. CV can also be used to sequence through files off the SD card allowing far more varied sounds from a single source; almost like an entire percussion section behind the slim panel.

Although originally designed to play tightly with our analog drums and envelopes, ONE’s rich sound quality encouraged us to make it work in a variety of other applications that are less demanding of sub millisecond timing response. The extra headroom at the core level allows features such as Gated playback, Looping, and Triggering with fades in and out to accommodate different types of sound sources from drum loops to polysynth chords to noise sources and other yet unimagined uses.

ONE offers another useful dimension since it can play CV signals too. Drop in a card with LFO signals, random CV, slopes and envelopes for a whole set of new control and modulation possibilities.

ONE is as simple to use as it is affordable and plays extremely well with it’s analog cousins - our vision for bringing samples into the modular world.

VCTRS: Lets Get Started

Type: One Shot

Character: Mixed material

ONE includes a card called VCTRS featuring 60 carefully chosen sounds from the 5 sound banks developed by Glitchmachines. We have included some of the most compelling material from each bank in order to showcase ONE’s strengths and demonstrate the broad range of sounds available on the PERC, SBSTRT, KERNL, HYBRD and BENT cards which are available separately from Eurorack retailers.

VCTRS and the other Glitchmachines cards include the entire sound set sampled at 48kHz, 64 kHz and 96kHz. The 48k rate allows for easy pitching up of one octave, 64k offers some pitch upward while maintaining much of the fidelity of the 96k source and full 96k offers the purity of the source as well as the lowest latency possible for great performance.

Forthcoming cards from a wide array of sound designers, artists and producers will expand the range to include poly and mono synth tones, field recordings and even CV source material."

"Recorded live using
Elektron Analog Rytm, Dave Smith Instruments Pro2, Access Virus TI, Yamaha DX21, Moog Moogerfooger LP Filter & Ringmodulator, UAD Apollo, Ableton Live.

Audio version on Soundcloud:

#### ROUTING ####
Ableton was master clock. Analog Rytm and DSI Pro2 were sequenced internally, Virus TI and DX21 got their midi signals from Ableton through a MOTU Midi Express 128. The Pro2 was connected via CV to the Moog pedals so that I could switch between the original Curtis multimode filter that is built into the Pro2 and a Moog ladder filter. Same game for the Ringmodulator.

All Outputs were put into the UAD Apollo and mixed with Ableton Live´s mixer. I used the Lexicon 224 and Vertigo VCS2 Plugins on all channels. I recorded the stereo output with Audio Hijack Pro and Nikolaos Rondelis did a good mastering job for me (thank you very much!!!)."

The SynthiMuse - MIDI Composer/Re-Composer

Target price ~ £300 / $400.

Expected to be ready mid to late March 2017.

via SynthiMuse

"The SynthiMuse is random music composer/re-composer that creates MIDI notes.
It can do a number of different things:

1. It can create endless random sequences of MIDI notes derived from the genuine random internal noise generator that is the same circuit as that used in the analog synthesizers of the 1970’s

The notes created are truly random. Any note sequence it generates has never been heard before, and if you don’t save it to a loop, it’ll never be heard again.

Sequences are generated by setting the parameters on the controls that can influence the notes. You can set the Key and the Scale and the generated notes, velocities and lengths can be affected by LFO, Noise, and Audio.

2. It can ‘re-compose’ notes passed to it from the MIDI input.

You can play any note melody in to it ( or no melody at all, just a repeating single note ) and, using the setups on the SynthiMuse panel, it will create new melodies.

3. It can trigger off audio picked up from the internal microphone or an external audio source.

You can sing or speak in to the SynthiMuse and it can either be influenced by the audio or actually triggered by it.

The SynthiMuse is sensitive to the pitch of the audio so singing/playing high and low notes can influence the pitch of the MIDI notes created.
