Roland D-50: The Definitive Sound Design Synthesis Demo

Published on Sep 18, 2017 Cro w

"Had to be done... couldn't stand having this sonic wonder be represented by the plethora of mostly atrocious demos on YouTube.

So... here's an hour of cosmic euphoria from the stellar D-50.

To be ABSOLUTELY CLEAR - this is ONE patch at a time. NO OVERDUBS/MULTI-TRACKS WHATSOEVER. This is all from the STOCK PCM ROM. I did not "burn" a special ROM or whatever, nor am I aware that's a possibility - if it is, I'd sure like to know about it!!! This is the potential lurking within the D50. The factory presets and "signature" sounds that shame the real truth of the D50 are completely repulsive in my opinion.... seriously, fuck Fantasia.... and Native Dance?!?!? Yikes.
99.9999% of the transient waves in the D50's ROM are absolutely useless, and not one is used in my patches. The otherworldly sound of the D50 come from the aspects I have never been able to come remotely close in replicating; they are 1) the manner in which the pitch envelopes warp and sonically tear the PCM waves.... the artifacts and Nyquist frequencies that appear like audio phantasms from a terrifying heaven. 2) The experimental synthesis concept that wouldn't appear again for years after the D-50, and it revolutionized everything to this day - the first time Virtual Analog was implemented in a poly synth. The D-50 generates square and saw waves. These get combined, layered, etc. with the PCM waves in the partials of the patch. Thats's it... just 2 waveforms compose the oscillator section of the VA part. And very primitively. But the metaphysical witchcraft of the D50's "pulse width modulation" is magic; I don't mean that allegorically - I'm convinced there's like eye-of-newt or some shit in this thing. 3) The filters... come on... alien technology for sure. Nothing is as weird and awesome as those. I personally feel that there is NOTHING about the D-50 that sounds remotely "analog." And that's another excellent attribute of it, because it sounds all its own and still is huge, spacious and completely warm. The distortion in the signal path is the perfect level of saturation. Things just blend and smear absolutely right. 4)The EFFECTS. Not at all because they sound anywhere near what they claim to be, or are excellent in accuracy, because they are not. It's because they are essentially spatial, wave and frequency modifiers that wouldn't be seen in synth context until many years down the road as "imaging, spatial exciters, air, metalizer, etc." The reverbs are not typical of what you would expect from something called 'reverb.' They are the space in which dark matter lays.... so get a Roland Boutique D-50 the minute that are available, and Roland - you can forward royalties to my PayPal account. Thanks."

The NDLR - a PAD demo with easy to see and hear notes

"Here's a demo of the PAD feature showing how the notes get played. We are using Arturia's 'Piano V' soft instrument running on Win10. The NDLR is connected to the PC directly.

Typically I like to use strings, pads, & FXs for the PAD voices, but in this video we used easy to hear notes and a 'live' piano keyboard so you can hear and see exactly which notes are being played."

"Here we offer a tribute to one of our favorite modules, Mutable Instruments Braids. Conceived in 2012 and discontinued in 2017, Mutable Instruments Braids will forever hold a fond place in the history of Eurorack modular synthesizers.

A cornerstone of countless racks, Braids offers a glance into many forms of synthesis both common and obscure. Its sheer versatility and ease of use have made it a go-to module for beginners and experts alike. We will always remember its Meta mode wavetable-like sweeps, its built-in pseudo-envelope / VCA, and its four-digit LCD readout : CSAW, PLUK, TOY*, VOWL, and beyond.

A first companion for our Moog Mother 32's, destination for our Make Noise Maths, and core of so many colorful patches—Braids may be discontinued, but it is not forgotten. Bon voyage, Braids! We're excited to see what Mutable Instruments has planned next.

This week's stream features a world premiere for Buchla lovers: Ramin will demonstrate the unparallelled audio range of the Buchla LEM Snoopy - Buchla's more compact synth voice with its flagship modulation and filtering capacities. You will be put into picture in connection with the convincing Buchla-sound, and he will also talk about what makes its oscillators exceptional both for timbre and tuning when it comes to heavy modulation.

The Make Noise DPO and the Endorphin.es Terminal will be also there to see how two classic Buchla-concepts (the lowpass gate and the complex oscillator) sound in eurorack. The 4ms Company - Dual Looping Delay will process the sounds with its exceptionally fine-tuned feedback.

The Varigate 8+ 2 CV outs will be utilised as well along with the XAOC Devices - Tirana II for extra sequencing duties.

The Hexinverter - Gallilean Moons envelope will be used as one essential ingredient for creating hihat sounds - based on the Malekko - Noise module mostly.

Modular Workshop is a weekly live series from the Analogue Zone Budapest showroom with our experienced modular electronic music performer & friend, Ramin Sayyah. The series was created in order to introduce either one particular module or a very special selection of module-combinations to make various kinds of music with them.

A new episode is streamed live every Wednesday on Analogue Zone's Youtube channel. After a short live performance, Ramin walks us through the building blocks of the patch and answers any questions raised by the viewers.

Tune in every Wednesday afternoon for the show and feel free to ask questions directly during the live stream - also let us know if you want to pay a visit to the showroom during the live show: we can accept a few guests too.

600円くらいで買えるヘッドホン分配器がMIDI THRU BOX代わりなってしまった動画

Published on Sep 21, 2017

Googlish:

"Branch from MIDI OUT (stereo mini jack) of KORG electribe 2 as it is with a distributor, convert it with the attached stereo mini -> MIDI conversion cable, connect to norddrum and moog minitaur.

When I was a junior high school student, I tried not to experiment well that I tried making my own MIDI THRU BOX properly, I did not want to be ringing and going out of my mind, I tried that I could not do anything, but perhaps I wonder if young people were doing casual about "Branch-over joke!"

Incidentally, there seems to be resistance entrance to the headphone distributor in exactly the same way as there are resistances and so it seems there is not so, with resistance to resistance (perhaps the level goes down, but it is more likely to be distributed equally?) Is used. Also, here we are sending only simple note data, so please be aware that if you send CC # or exclusive etc, trouble will occur easily. Since it is an inconspicuous connection method which is not guaranteed in any way, please try it at your own risk of lucky if it goes well. "

Pastime & 3 Modules #24: Maths, Rings, Peaks

Published on Sep 13, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"A patch for the patient.

***

A fairly simple self-playing setup using Brain Seed for sequencing, and Rings/Clouds for the sounds. The 'strumming' motion is created with Maths.

I love how the tempo/density of notes is completely self-regulated, and creates variations that are only evident over a longer period of time. This is done by using a slow, random S&H from Noise Tools to regulate Maths' cycle rate and to occasionally let Brain Seed select new notes when the S&H signal passes above the ReSeed threshold. The number of notes in a given phrase depends on how long the ReSeed is "open" and how fast Maths is strumming while it is.

Repeated notes and negative voltages equal silence. In this patch I'm deliberately allowing quite long pauses to arise between phrases in the lower range of intensity, so this one's not for the impatient. :)

The only thing I'm manually controlling during this recording is the µScale, where I'm changing the available notes every 10-20 minutes, or so. And a very minor tweaking of Rings' structure/dampening towards the end."

Published on Sep 21, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Taking a page out of the Pastime video I posted a little over a week ago. Let's have a closer look at making strumming triggers with Maths.

Patch notes:

I'm using Maths' envelope functions and their respective gate outputs to create phrases consisting of a series of rapid triggers (a "strum").

Maths' channel 4 is cycling with a medium long rise and fall time, and the EOC gate output is active as long as the envelope is rising. Let's call each active gate a "phrase trigger". In other words it outputs a phrase trigger that last as long as the rise time with pauses between the phrases that are as long as the fall time. Now, that fall time is modulated by a slow random signal from Peaks' channel 1 (in LFO mode), which means that the pauses between phrases will be of random duration.

Maths channel 1 outputs the "strum triggers". It receives the phrase trigger from channel 4 to its cycle input, and with short rise and fall times the EOR output then starts spitting out rapid strums for the duration of the phrase. However, the fall time is being controlled by the channel 4 envelope, which is rising throughout the phrase. This means that the fall time increases, effectively slowing down the strum triggers. They start out fast, and gradually slow down a little over the course of each phrase.

Now that we have our strum triggers, let's feed those into Peaks' channel 2 which is in four-step sequencer mode. Each trigger advances the sequence by one step, and the sequence is fed into Rings' V/Oct input. Since each strum will – more or less – cycle through the entire sequence, the result is more like a strummed chord than a melody. I have Rings set to maximum polyphony to allow the notes to sound simultaneously.

Finally, I'm also using the random signal from Peaks' channel 1 to modulate Rings' dampening. As the signal gets higher the pause between phrase triggers gets longer and Rings' notes will also sustain for longer, and vice versa: more frequent phrases = shorter, dampened notes. Since Rings is in the "alternate red mode", the dampening parameter also adds reverb, which results in a strange, unreal atmosphere when modulated.

Thanks for watching!"
