"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine.

I created this soundscape and short film for Halloween 2021. A friend and I went for a walk around beacon fell to do some filming and sound recording a few weeks ago, but the weather was far too wet and windy to do either!

However, I managed to get a few shots of the spectacular foggy atmospheres on my Osmo action, and thought they would pair well with the otherworldy sounds of the Lyra 8... so here we are.

The samples are from some radio show about haunted woodlands I recorded late on night on my field recorder.

Whenever I tuned the single steps on the DFAM it took me quite a while to get it right, so I decided to give the DFAM knob set from Thonk a try. You'll need a bit of patience to install them all properly, but it's doable in about 5-10 minutes all in all. And it does look pretty nice in the end, don't you think?

"This is a Dubreq Pianomate analog synthesizer piano enhancer. Dubreq's Pianomate is a crazy box of tricks, designed to capture the tone of a piano creating an electronic & acoustic sound together like a hybrid synth. Two bars with sensors rest on the keyboard wired into the amp/speaker built into the Pianomate. The bars, treble/bass respond to piano playing, when the key is pressed the tonebar key drops down, creating the note. This results in a synth sound, that's warm but polyphonic. A 3-way rocker switch controls 'Balance' (bass, both, treble), another 3-way rocker selects 'Voice' (french accordion, organ, flute, jazz buzz). There are two volume knobs Pianomate & Mic. Another 3-way switch control vibrato. Between the two volume knobs is access to a small trim pot that allows fine tuning of vibrato speed. This Pianomate is in great condition."

Korg Minilogue XD // It can sound EXPENSIVE! [no external FX]

"First of all: welcome to another video, I want to thank you for stopping by my channel, and also taking your time to read this. I really appreciate that. 💝

Let's get to this video, and the Korg Minilogue, most importantly the XD version.
I've always told myself I would never buy one, but if I had a chance to try it I wouldn't refuse. So here we are, I was selling other stuff and one came up for trade, so I took the chance.
- Build quality is good, as it was with the older Minilogue (which I owned, I think most of us used to), and it's finally nice to have a compact, quite light, polysynth on my desk.
- The analog part is good, similar to the one on the previous model or even the Monologue, an instrument I dig a lot.
- The digital part is okay-ish, here I will be using the Sine part since the emulation of saws, squares, and so on are AWFUL, and I can't stress this enough: even the quickest comparison with ITS OWN analog part will result in a complete debacle for the digital part.
- The FX are okay-ish too, most of the reverbs sound almost the same, with various degrees of pitch-shifting (ranging from annoying to unusable to okay if you turn it almost down), the delays would be cool if they had any chance to be modulated, or if all didn't sound super lo-fi, rendering useless the preset Tape. Cool the Mod part, because using Ensemble or Chorus will give that expensive feeling to the sound

It is a strange synth because it can be very useful for a wide range of situations, but at the same time, it is very clear what it wants you to do with its engines (and this patch made from scratch is a good example since I later found out it resembles very closely the very first patch you get turning on the instrument; from patch 2 you're getting downhill).
It's the perfect case of "The sum is greater than the parts", but I am not sure that's the right approach for me.

"Technical productdemo for the #CCTranslator which converts common Midi Control Change (aka 'CC') data into highly specialized #SysEx parameter change commands. This allows to remote or automate vintage Synthesizers like e.g. the #Waldorf #Microwave, #Matrix1000, #TX-81Z in your DAW. In the video these three Synths are automated - each with 4 parameters - from a dashboard in FL Studio. The Matrix1000 is running the tauntek firmware which reflects parameter changes on the LED display. Some little timing issues but mostly it works quite well. Most of the automation data was optimized by drawing steps and preventing redundant data. Depending on your DAW, automation curves can produce a LOT of data which might result in timing problems or missed events."

"The MIDI TOOLS are tiny, cute boxes manipulating Midi Data. They will be plugged in between the sender (MIDI OUT of DAW or Keyboard) and the receiver (MIDI IN of Synthesizer) and will be supplied with power from the connected Midi cable – there is no power supply jack. You might recall the Matrix-6G Plug-In Editor for Reaper back in 2015. It's now available as a VST3.

"Matrix-6G VST3 is now available! It’s an editor and librarian plugin designed to work with Oberheim’s Matrix-6R rack-mount synth module from the mid-1980s.

The highlights:

Edit patches, matrix mod settings, splits, and master settings on the hardware from within your DAW.
Patch parameters are exposed to the plugin host and can be automated and/or controlled via external devices.
Several hundred patch presets are included, plus there are two storage banks where custom patches can be saved.
Helpful tooltip windows appear when you hover the mouse over parameter controls for a few moments. You can change the amount of time before the tips appear or turn them off entirely.
Compatibility: Reaper (version 6 and up) and Cubase (version 10 and up). Windows only. The plugin may work to some extent with the Matrix-1000 module or the Matrix-6 keyboard model, but I have no way to test this. The plugin is most likely not compatible with any third-party modification of the Matrix-6R’s firmware.

Matrix-6G VST3 version 1.0.0 is now available for free download.

It is also completely open-source, and there’s information about getting the source code on my website as well.

"This is a tutorial series for anyone who wants to learn how to do their own sound design using the Sequential Circuits (former Dave Smith Instruments) OB-6 synthesizer. "The Ensoniq Halo keyboard was introduced in 2002. It was basically an E-mu product (a sister to the the E-mu PK-6 keyboard). This demo shows a custom sequence (pattern/arppegio) played with a special technique in which the right hand is played sparsely and sometimes with polyrhythms to create a melody line. The Halo was the last product released by Ensoniq. It used the same samples that were in the ZR-76 in a "less industrial" package, at a much lower price point."

"Core Techniques:

• Audio rate XOR voice combination
• Rhythmic modulation
• Wavefolding
• Through-zero frequency modulation

I explore quite a few techniques in this patch. The foundation is a minor chord progression built around a diad patched in stereo (root left and 3rd right).
I wanted to use similar timbres for the voices producing root and 3rd. The root comes from the wavefolder output of a Neóni which is modulated by a rhythmic LFO.
The 3rd is a TZFM pair pitched from the Tš-L modulating a second Neóni. The index ratio is modulated by a second rhythmic LFO.

Self patching an øchd produces the rhythmic LFO signals that become the natual tempo and feel of the patch. I play the progression manually from the Harmonàig as the rhythms are not rigidly locked.

The 5th output of the Harmonàig controls a Tòna from which the square wave output is combined with the root Neóni's squarewave via the XOR comparator on the eãs.
XOR processing of square waves is mathematically the same as ring-modulation/4-quadrant multiplication of the two square wave signals.
Sidebands are produced resulting in a richer more complex tone. As the chord voicings mostly form a perfect 5th interval between root and 5th, the resulting signal remains tonally stable. Slight detuning of the 5th allowing for beating to broaden the timbre.

I low-pass filter this new voice and share it equally between left and right to form a common mono signal for the patch.


The gate from the Harmonàig triggers an ADSR from the Cèis. TRIG mode is engaged to force completion of the attack phase.
This envelope modulates two aspects of the same signal.
The top voice of a Cš-L acts as an LFO. This LFO frequency is controlled by the envelope while the signal's depth is simultaniously controlled by the same envelope.
The processed LFO controls the cutoff frequency of the I-ō47 which is low-pass filtering the XOR signal.
When a note is played on the Harmonàig the filter cutoff will "wobble" with a dynamic rate and depth."

"This is Hydrasynth Deluxe single preset D021 “Released RA”. It’s modified to use Mod 1 input as an external audio input, fed by my Waldorf Blofeld with the “Liquid Stack” classic Emulator sample, bringing the sample into the Hydra signal chain as a paraphonic fourth “oscillator”. I also change the Hydra oscillator waveforms from Saw to TriSaw as I mix in Mod 1 input."

Hydrasynth Deluxe single patch “Entropium RA” + “Loon Garden” sample

"Here is an attempt to feed samples into the signal chain of the Hydrasynth. The sample is an old Emulator II classic, 'Loon Garden', residing in my Waldorf Blofeld with License SL. The output of the Blofeld is fed into Mod 1 input on the Hydrasynth, which is selected as source in the Ring-Noise menu. RM depth 0, Ring Vol 128. Hydrasynth midi out to Blofeld midi in. The multi sample on the Blo is now acting as a fourth, paraphonic 'oscillator' on the Hydra.

The mod inputs are obviously not meant for this use, the volume of the audio is quite weak compared to the oscillators, so I had to turn up AmpLevel and lower the oscillator levels."

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to make something more out there and noisy musically. I didn't rehearse this beforehand and was just following the sound. I am using a looper pedal to create many layers of the soundscape, eventually working towards creating an Easel roulette with the envelope assigned to the tempo. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

"For this debut episode of Red Bull Music Academy’s new Key Tracks series the dublab film team connected with West electro legend Egyptian Lover. We visited the 808 controlling wizard at Rusk Sound Studios, where he recorded his 1984 album On the Nile which included the classic 'Egypt, Egypt.' Egyptian Lover sketches out the inspiration behind the recording of this monumental jam and even graces us with a grand piano performance before a mind blowing recreation of the tune on his OG Roland TR-808. We were thrilled to once again collaborate with our buddies in forward thinking sound at RBMA. Keep your eyes and ears open for more installments of their Key Tracks series, as they continue to share personal sonic insights from musical legends.
