"Tidal Waves" - electronic theme with DotCom modular, Korg 01/W, TR-505, Polara, Dan-Echo

"A typical synthmania-style jam recorded in real time to simple two-track stereo. When I have a chance I'll re-record it properly in separate multi tracks with studio effects. Powerful modular bass & lead, trance-inducing high string pad, good sounds in combination- overall, a haunting track. The key is Gmin. The tempo is 96bpm.

Danelectro Dan-Echo delay is applied to the dotcom bass line.

"A very quick noodle with the Roland JU-06. I had an original Juno-106 for many years. Its lush chorus was and is so unique anything you use it on instantly has that Juno sound. Unfortunately my Juno 106 suffered dead Oscillator IC's at a time where replacements were becoming very hard to find (lucky Roland Australia still had some in stock the early 2000's). I decided to move it on while it still worked and invest in something modern and digital which seemed the correct decision at the time!
These days with the modern IC replacements they should last a very long time. I might get one again soon, until then the JU06 sounds close enough to keep most people happy... just a shame it only is 4 voice poly!
I created a basic sequence in logic then added an manually edited ARP about mid way. I used the Soundtoys Echoboy Jr for delays and the Valhalla Vintage verb for .. well .. 'verb :D"

"Just some fooling around on the Deluge which I just bought 2nd hand. Only samples are used and the audio is recorded directly on the Deluge. As you can see I am still learning the device and it's workflow which is completely different to the Elektron workflow that I am used to, but it's a really cool machine and no crashes yet!!"

"Next up testing in the boutique series is the SE-02, and really this tiny little matchbox of a synth sounds like a SE-01 and Model D on steroids.. it is just completely bonkers. :D and it's analogue dammit!!
I had the original model D when I lived back in Europe, and seriously, this is really really close to the feeling and oomph that it had. Adding the extra features.. well, its just becomes next level stuff :)
FYI, the signal might be just a bit hot at times / and yes, there is a little jam at the end :D
So, a few words on the video and format. There are heaps of demo-videos out there already with the SE02, and my take on this is to noodle around and do sound design/demo and give you insight how i personally work with synths when wiggling with knobs. So no feature deep dive, I try however to add some subs when there are weird stuff going on, and I hope this helps with clarity (if not, please ask in the comment section below).
And YES, i use FX (not all the time), if you have questions on where and when it is on, again please ask.
FX (from right to left connected in series) .. audio out from SE02 in mono to SolidGoldFX electroman (BBD delay), Catalinbread CSIDMAN (granular delay), tc electronic ditto X2 (looper), Strymon el Capsitan (tape echo), Strymon blueSky (reverb) -- to mixer and 2 track. The track is slightly normalized to keep some of the peaks under control, else what you see is what you hear.

"Legendary 70's synth. The Transcendent 2000 was one of the first commercially available synths to be available to the public. It was sold as a kit and this one was built by myself. It was never used in anger and was put away with other band gear in a store room. Now I am having a clear out and it's up for sale.
There is lots about this synth on the internet. Designed by Tim Orr this type of synth was popular in the late 70's early 80's and in particular was used by Joy Division. These are fairly rare beasts , especially a working one. I have checked the synth out and adjusted some of the key contacts to give better contact / overtravel. This was a weak point on these synths as they are fairly delicate. So here we have a fully working example of this traditional analogue synth. All the keys work , all the controls work. Overall it is in good condition for its' age. It is monophonic ( one note at a time) but has some great sounds /effects. If you are not familiar with this synth please note it must be plugged into a sound system/ amplifier etc. in order to use it , ie. no built in sound system but that's pretty standard for a synth."

"Outrun soundtrack Passing Breeze as you've never heard it before! Remixed using Dexed VST plugin emulating the sound of the legendary 1983 Yamaha DX7 FM synthesizer.
The original arcade hardware also used a primitive form of Yamaha FM synthesis so this version has similar sounds but in much higher fidelity.
So enjoy once again the sound of the Yamaha DX7 electric piano and bass patches, put through a touch of TAL Chorus (an emulation of the Roland Juno-6 analog chorus).
Sega Out Run (アウトラン Auto Ran) arcade music was provided by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, who had previously composed soundtracks for other games designed by Suzuki, and who was part of Sega's official band at the time, the S.S.T. Band. Out Run was the first video arcade game that allowed the user to choose the background music. The soundtrack comprised both jazz music (similar in style to that of fusion band Casiopea) and Latin/Caribbean music (similar to Miami Sound Machine). In all, three selectable tracks were featured: Passing Breeze, Splash Wave and Magical Sound Shower. An additional track, Last Wave, played at the final score screen.

CMS 2607 live 2 track demo - "Ruination"

"This is a quick demo I quickly made using:
6 CMS 2607 rack mount synthesizers, 2 Roland MPU-101 MIDI converters and 1 TR-808 analog drum machine (upgraded by CMS).
The 2607 is an updated and miniaturized version of the ARP 2600. I only had approx 1 day to record this and some photos before I disassembled the rack. The customers were waiting for their instruments. Go to discretesynthesizers.com for more info. The synths are mounted in a vintage Emcor rack cabinet similar to those used in vintage sci-fi movies and TV."

I have had the privilege to try out the new Roland Boutique SH-01A boutique synth. I have never owned an SH-101 myself, I have played them a couple times but not really spent any significant amount of time with them the last 15-20 years or so.
I know this is a classic synth, and I can understand why because this puppy just screams to be played and sequenced to the max and it sounds really really great.
A few words on the video/demo format. There are loads and loads of videos and demos out there already, and my take on this noodle sound demo session is to show you a bit how i work with synths when designing sounds. So there will not just be dry signals, you will hear and see some of my favorite effects paired up with the SH-01A whenever I find a sound that works for me.
So no deep dive into features, it is just me playing and the SH-01A doing what it does best, eg being really fun and inspiring synth.
Yes ! it is both monophonic, polyphonic AND you can run all voices in unison for some extra wide and fat leads. I don't do unison in this video though since it was way too loud, sorry for that.. but trust me, its fat :D
I tried to blend the playing with FX to a level so that the dry parts were audible as well, but as you know i like my FX so it tends to be a bit more wet at times :) If you have any questions let me know.

"In this demo i'm raising and lowering individually and in progressive order the single band pass filters (frequencies: 250, 350, 500, 700, 1000, 1400, 2000, 2800 Hz) to show their individual characteristics.
The low pass shelf filter (aka "Kuhschwanzfilter") is always set to 5 (mid position), the high pass shelf filter from fully closed to fully open at the beginning and at the end of the demo.

"This was such a cool problem I edited some video I shot for the customer into a synthchaser video. Customer was reporting his Oscillator 2 couldn't be calibrated and was drifting. The trimmer should be adjusted to make a 20Hz square wave, but the lowest it would go was 40Hz. So he sent in his oscillator board and I put it in one of my Odysseys and this is what I saw!

"This is my first encounter with the Conductive Labs 'The NDLR' (pronounced noodler). The guys at Conductive Labs (who had previously seen my demo videos here on Youtube, and had attended a couple of my live performances) asked if I would run one of their prototype NDLRs through it's paces... and of course, how could I resist! This is still a beta unit; some features have not yet been implemented (such as the LFO section) but hopefully these series of quick demos will give you all an idea of what the NDLR can do in a musical context. I only have it for a week before I have to give it back, so I will be doing as much as I can while I have it...
In this Demo #1 I have the NDLR Paired with the Waldorf Blofeld. Since the Blofeld is Multitimbral, it's quite easy to have the NDLR play the various parts on the Blofeld. A perfect example of the ultimate minimal setup for live jams!
In the next, forthcoming Demo #2, I will have the NDLR play a Korg Minilogue (for the PAD) and three Moog Mother-32s. I will also dive deeper into the Menu system.
In Demo #3, it will be the NDLR with the Moog Sub 37, ARP Odyssey, Waldorf Microwave XTk and the Micro Q!

"The aim was to create a pack where each sound can be tweaked to get the most out of the 64 patch slots. Patches 1-32 are more unique in their macro layout and the sound types are varied whereas the patches 33-64 have more of a standard feel to them to give you a broad sound palette to work with. Patches 33-64 can be shaped using macro knob 5 to switch between different oscillator settings which will give the patches different character. Macro knob 8 was used for distortion which in turn was tweaked to add character and variation to the sounds.

"UHMR is an interface that allows us to interconnect MIDI USB class compliant and MIDI DIN devices without the need to use a computer as a bridge between them. It consists of a USB type B connection for powering or programming the device, eight LED indicators for USB connections, two LEDs for MIDI input and output, two pushbuttons for various functions, a switch for programming, a USB HOST input and a MIDI DIN input and output.
The USB HOST input supports a USB HUB (or two cascade) where you can connect up to eight USB class compliant devices (controllers, keyboards, sound modules, MIDI interfaces, etc ...) and communicate them with each other or with the input and output. In case of need, if we do not have a computer at any given time, the system can be configured with the two pushbuttons and LED indicators following the instructions in the manual. Although it is much easy and more intuitive to program it with the application UHMRconfig for Windows and Mac Os X that you can download from the web www.sevillasoft.com. Our interface has a switch that in normal operating state is in the RUN position, if we move it to the PROG position the USB connector type B becomes a USB HID device where it will communicate with the UHMRconfig application. UHMRconfig presents an array with the devices that we have been connecting to the UHMR, each input can be routed to each of the outputs including the input and output MIDI DIN. UHMRconfig will also allow us to update the firmware of the device."

The Contour takes inspiration from the original Loudness Contour circuit of the MiniMoog, which is perhaps the most well-known example of East Coast Synthesis. The simplified control set (where Decay adjust both the decay to Sustain and the Release) makes it quick and intuitive to set-up. "Dynamix is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, dynamics manager and mixer, the core of which is derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. The LEVEL parameter provides simultaneous voltage control over the Amplitude and Frequency content of audio signals, operating as a VCF/A. The DYNMC parameter accepts audio signals or control voltages and converts them into a signal that may increase or decrease the LEVEL parameter thus allowing for Expansion, Compression and Ducking. The summing section is complete with an AUXiliary INput allowing for the chaining of multiple MIX units (modDemix, Optomix and RxMx modules) to create large, non-centralized mixes.

"With summer dying and fall taking over, the creepy things have begun to spread. In this track the Tom Cat and Circuit Mono Station are run thru the TP-2 for some Tube Overdrive & Optical Compression. The Circuit is playing clean. All tracks run thru the Mackie Onyx mixer and then recorded into Logic. Once in Logic, everything is mixed using Compression, EQ and a reverb send. Everything is synced via midi."

"On Feb 1 - 12 I was Guest Composer at EMS Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, Sweden. I also had my Eurorack modular with Intellijel Shapeshifter, CycleboxII + Expander, Tiptop Z-DSP & Numberz, as well as my uMANIAC and MANIAC cellular automata sequencers and a MacBook Pro + MOTU MicroBookII.
For the creative outcomes I spent my time again working mainly with modulation synthesis such as FM, RM, PWM, AM, and wavetable synthesis via audio rate sequencing. I was also processing sounds from my Rainwire recordings through some pretty exotic effects modules/units, ranging from spring/plate reverbs, modular systems and high end DSP boxes. In 2015 I re-calibrated the synthesizer as per the Roland service notes. Improvement was heard instantly with more consistency across all VCO's, Filters and PWM settings.
The metal end piece just to the right of the top most key had been "re-engineered" in the past by a previous owner. When I bought the synth, there was a poorly repaired slot in the piece which I re-repaired and repainted the piece. It is not the exact colour as the rest of the Jupiter, but it is close and I'm just mentioning it so you know everything there is to know.
There are a few chips to the paintwork on the face shown in the photos. The aluminium end pieces have a few nicks, but overall, very good condition. The synthesizer has remained in good care in my home. Close up photos show these.
It all works perfectly, no scratchy pots or sliders, no missing caps, nothing bent or broken."

Within the drumloop sample, the sample position is mapped to MIDI notes, so you can map a note to the snare position for example. This is a quick hack to test multitimbral possibilities and is not even close to be polished and included, but we will work this out when the next stretch goal is reached!! :)"

But then it felt like a missed opportunity to not flip it around and go from Clouds into Rings instead of the other way around, so I went back and recorded a second part. I think part 2 sounds more interesting, but part 1 had a little bit more going on patch-wise so here they both are.
Patch notes:
In part one I'm sending audio from Ears' contact microphone through Rings' resonator and then into Clouds. I'm "cheating" a tiny bit with the Quadratt to invert Ears' gate output, so that the gate goes high when the audio signal is low (instead of the opposite). I'm then using this inverted gate to freeze Clouds whenever the audio goes below the gate threshold. In other words, Clouds will unfreeze the buffer whenever I tap Ears hard enough, and then immediately freeze the buffer again.
Finally, I'm using Clouds own audio outputs to modulate position and size. Using an audio signal like this is virtually like randomizing those parameters.
For part two I flip Clouds and Rings around, and instead send audio from Ears into Clouds, freeze it, and then process the output with Rings' resonator. Pretty simple, but very cool way to make some moody "dark ambient"-esque drones. I'm changing a lot of the parameters manually here, but you could just as well use CV modulation to make it interesting over time. I especially recommend using a slow LFO to modulate Clouds' position – sweeping through the recorded buffer.

"Over halfway with my first Eurorack case...excuse the cardboard!
Using Midi sequencing from the Digitakt on 3 channels to MI Yarns which is feeding :
-Rings (polyphonic, western chords on sympathetic strings) into Clouds
-Erica Synths Wavetable VCO + Polivoks VCF
-Mother-32 into Pico DSP Mono Delay
-Everything into 2hp Verb.
-Very slow LFO on left side of Maths is building the Erica Wavetable sound - slowly opening the filter and morphing the wavetable a little, also the cutoff on the Mother 32
-Other side of Maths is triggering/releasing Clouds' Freeze
-MI Peaks is modulating a couple of Clouds' CV inputs as well as envelope for Wavetable VCO
Everything you hear is from the Eurorack case except the drum tracks from Digitakt (TR-707 samples) and I used the enhancement circuit on Elektron Analog Heat in post."
