"Series Debut Includes JX-8P, SH-101, JUNO-106, and JUPITER-8 Model Expansions, Available Through Roland Cloud in Q3 2020

Los Angeles, CA, June 30, 2020 — Roland introduces Model Expansions, the latest additions to Roland Cloud and the ZEN-Core Synthesis System. Each Model Expansion transforms the ZENOLOGY Software Synthesizer into an entirely different instrument with its own sonic personality, features, and preset tones. From rare and sought-after classics to the designs of tomorrow, Model Expansions give musicians and producers unprecedented access to the historic and ever-evolving world of Roland synthesizers.

The series debuts with the JX-8P Model Expansion, with releases of SH-101, JUNO-106, and JUPITER-8 Model Expansions to follow soon after. Model Expansions are hosted in ZENOLOGY for macOS and Windows. Later in 2020, these titles will also be supported by ZEN-Core hardware instruments like the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm.

Offering expanded polyphony and boldly modern interfaces, vintage-inspired Model Expansions capture the essence of legendary Roland instruments with astonishing realism and authenticity. Each delivers the unique sound and experience of the original hardware—without the expense and maintenance.

For future Model Expansions, the possibilities go far beyond vintage. The power of the ZEN- Core Synthesis System allows for the creation of exciting new Roland synthesizers, from next- generation designs to hybrid instruments inspired by vintage synths or current hardware.
When hosted in ZENOLOGY, Model Expansions provide speedy operation and intuitive performance for music production in modern DAWs. Clear, re-sizable, touch-friendly interfaces are coupled with efficient CPU usage and high polyphony. Users can swap Model Expansions and load sounds instantly, with no disruption to their creative flow.

The first Model Expansion titles represent four of Roland’s most influential analog synthesizers from the 1980s:

• JX-8P Model Expansion—Launched in 1985, the innovative JX-8P took analog a step further with capabilities that could generate tones associated with digital synthesizers, making it highly versatile. Scheduled for release on June 30, 2020, the JX-8P Model Expansion reintroduces the unique voice of this sought-after instrument for the first time ever. The user interface also includes the hands-on editing functions of the PG-800, a companion programmer unit that was available for the original synth.

• SH-101 Model Expansion—Small and mighty, the SH-101 monosynth has been a key ingredient in shaping electronic music styles from the mid ‘80s until today. It’s been reborn as a polysynth with the SH-101 Model Expansion, bringing new and exciting possibilities to today’s music creators. The SH-101 Model Expansion is scheduled for release on July 16, 2020.

• JUNO-106 Model Expansion—Introduced in 1984 as an affordable polysynth for the masses, the JUNO-106 has risen from humble beginnings to become an all-time favorite of synth lovers everywhere, and its built-in chorus is the stuff of legend. The JUNO-106 Model Expansion is scheduled for release on August 8, 2020.

• JUPITER-8 Model Expansion—One of the most revered polysynths of all time, the JUPITER-8's lush, complex sound is part of countless hit songs over the last four decades, and its massive voice is simply unmatched when it comes to warm pads, strings, and lead tones. The JUPITER-8 Model Expansion is scheduled for release on August 31, 2020.

Model Expansions for ZENOLOGY are included with the Pro and Ultimate membership levels of Roland Cloud. All paid levels—including Core—start with a free 30-day trial of Ultimate, allowing users to try out software-based Model Expansions and other Ultimate features. In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Model Expansion titles. This provides unlimited access for as long as their account is active, even if they don’t have a Roland Cloud membership.

ZENOLOGY, Roland’s expandable plug-in version of its ZEN-Core Synthesis System, is offered exclusively through Roland Cloud. Depending on the membership level, other Roland Cloud perks include access to Legendary and SRX instrument collections, ZEN-Core Sound Packs, Wave Expansions, and much more.

"Nord first revolutionized the synth industry with the world's first purely "virtual analog" instrument (afaik they invented the term). Then came the MODULAR! Truly amazing instrument with virtually endless possibilities. Nord Modular owners will attest to the fact that risk of massive sleep deprivation after bringing one of these home is VERY high. Don't let the small footprint fool you, this is one seriously powerful synth."

"The SQ-80 is basically a reved-up ESQ-1 with a total of 75 waveforms, a 61-note keyboard with velocity & aftertouch, floppy disk drive for storing patches and sequences, and an enhanced sequencer. Great for organs, analog-type sounds, pads and sound effects. Like the classic ESQ-1, the SQ-80 functions in providing analog-type 4-pole lowpass filtering and editing of digital waveforms.

As for playing the SQ-80, it is a dream! Its 61-note keyboard is full, responsive and has polyphonic aftertouch. Polyphonic aftertouch simply means that each key pressed will respond to aftertouch independently of the other keys. The aftertouch can be used to control a variety of modulation parameters such as the LFO. Pitch and mod wheels and plenty of front-panel buttons and a few sliders make accessing and editing fairly easy and hands-on. The keyboard can be split or layered. The pattern-based 8-track multitimbral sequencer is great for creating short to complex sequences live, or in step time with quantization, bounce-able tracks, 60 sequence patterns and 20 songs. And they can be saved to disk along with any patches you've created and any SysEx Midi data. Unfortunately, the SQ-80 has no built-in effects. The SQ-80 is certainly a classic analog/digital hybrid of the late eighties which still holds up well today. It has been used by filmaker/composer John Carpenter. This thing is heavy like an analog Synth with the sounds to match."

Sound Design with Polyend Dreadbox Medusa (Ep.6) - Making Drums (+ MIDI Sync with Polyend Tracker)

Miltos Schimatariotis

"This episode is my take on making Drum sounds with the Medusa. I am demonstrating a workflow that may help you build a basic kit quite fast and I also describe how to use the sequencer with them. Since the Medusa is not a dedicated drum synth the sounds that we can achieve aren't like the usual 808, 909, etc sounds but I think we are able to have some drums and percussion with their own personality. As you will see in the sound design process something that will help us a lot to achieve some punch for the sounds is the FM feature of the synth. Furthermore, as an outro of the video, I have a demonstration of MIDI syncing the Medusa with the Tracker. It is a small song with the Medusa playing the drums and the Tracker adds some music around the rhythm.
I hope you 'll find this video helpful, feel free to leave your comments and thanks for watching!

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider part 3

Waveformer

All parts here.

"Third and final part of a three-part jam, featuring the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, and with Zoom MS-70CDR and Korg NTS-1 on effects.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

See the two previous videos for part 1 and 2. The tree jams use the same instruments and effects, but with different themes.

The Monologue is used for 3 solo parts - one bright synth-y lead in the beginning, one grumpy distorted lead sound in the middle, and one theremin-like sound at the end. All based on the same custom patch, but with modified envelope, oscillator mix and filter to give each solo a unique character.

The MicroFreak is doing chords with a simple super saw patch and lots of chorus, delays and reverb from the MS70. In the section from 7:30 to 9:30, I'm using a nice "trick" to get from a C minor to a Eb minor in a smooth way. I go from Eb to G7, and then to B diminished 7 (just move the low G note a half step up to a G sharp), and then on to Bb7 (move the B one half step down to a Bb). The Bb7 is the dominant chord for an Eb minor, so the transition to Eb minor feels very natural. To my ear, all these transitions feel very smooth, and still we end up on a Eb minor chord three half steps from the C minor root. And the G minor note in the Eb minor chord is definitely not in the C minor scale. It's even a tritone. The diminished 7th chord of a scale is a very nice gateway to other scales. If you're in C (major or minor) scale, you can use the B diminished chord to go to Eb, to Gb and to A - minor or major. All of these are just a half step up from a note in the diminished chord, so the tension in the diminished chord resolves nicely to any of these.

ELKA SYNTHEX - Sounds, Patches & Ambient Soundscapes | Synth Demo

synth4ever

"Elka Synthex analog synthesizer demo, featuring various sounds, patches and ambient soundscapes. This Elka Synthex synth demo showcases various Elka Synthex sounds including pads, leads, resonant sweeps, organs and more. Filmed at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Oakland, CA.

Manufactured from 1981-1984 in Italy, the Elka Synthex is a lush sounding classic 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. It was conceived by independent Italian designer Mario Maggi and has 30 knobs, 6 sliders, 80 switches and a joystick, as well as a 4 track sequencer. Later versions implemented basic MIDI functions.

The Elka Synthex utilizes 2 DCOs per voice, each with multiple waveshapes: triangle, saw, square, pulse, PWM and ring mod. It also has a lovely multimode filter with frequency, envelope control, resonance and keyboard tracking, as well as lowpass, two bandpass options, and highpass filter modes.

The Elka Synthex also has 2 LFOs, multiple envelope generators, multiple chorus modes as well as oscillator cross-modulation and oscillator sync capabilities. LFOs can be routed to osc1, osc2, PW1, PW2, filter or amp and waveshapes include triangle, saw, ramp and square. Voices can be split, dual or layered, and it also supports footswitches for advance, glide, hold and release and direct onboard glide/portamento.

The Elka Synthex sequencer offers four different tracks which can have different length and sounds (Upper/Lower can be allocated to different tracks), and supports rests between notes as well as length of notes. In addition, 2 of its tracks can output MIDI data.

Instead of traditional pitchbend/modulation wheels, the Elka Synthex has a joystick which provides real-time control over the two LFOs, oscillator and filter modulation. The 6 sliders beside the joystick assign what (LFO, osc and filter) goes to the joystick.

Overall, the Elka Synthex is an extremely lush sounding synthesizer with many famous artists such as Tangerine Dream, Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran) and Jean Michel Jarre having used it. It is probably most famous for its "laser harp" sound.

The Elka Synthex is a beautiful machine, quite large in size, and can put out some amazing pads and timbres. The chorus and ensemble effects are particularly lovely, as they add an incredible shimmer to the sounds. The Elka Synthex is quite rare these days and commands hefty prices on the second-hand market, but if you have the opportunity to try one, do not hesitate as it is an experience like no other."

Introducing the Pittsburgh Modular SV-1b Modular Synthesizer

Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

"Richard's psychedelic fever dream product ad for the Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1b modular synthesizer.

The original Lifeforms SV-1 eurorack format synthesizer module is legendary for its deep, analog sounds capable of pumping out everything from roaring bass and cutting leads to absolute chaos. The SV-1b shares this same bold, powerful core while fine tuning the details. We have made a countless number of small tweaks and adjustments to the original SV-1 synthesis engine to improve the stability and functionality of the SV-1b. The sound is what matters, and this is still the East Coast analog monster to beat."

The Pittsburgh Modular SV-1b was first introduced at NAMM 2020, and was recently featured in this animated short.

"This is one of the best sounding analog drum machines at any price but it is an incredible deal at this price. It is actually eight analog percussion synths each with nine knobs for incredibly versatile sound shaping. Each synth also includes its own dedicated out for routing through effects easily. The hi hats includes both open and closed sounds so actually ten unique analog percussions sounds in all are included. Wonderful modern sound, completely unique and unlike your 808s or 909s. Great for trance or any other edm genre tbh.

"Nothing very spectacular here ,but I didn t see so much video with Drum Machine and the MuTron Biphase so I decided to shoot the recording of one relatively simple and little dirty HiHat pattern I did for a future Sound Provider Soundbank. On this pattern I use the Ibanez TK999 Tube King Distortion, then the Boss DD8 Delay in Standard mode , On the console I send the signal to the Mutron Phaser, I keep around 40% of the dry signal in the middle and send the Phasor A to the left and the B to the right, I really like the modulation the phasor add to the signal.
If I have time I will try to shoot more stuff through the Bi-Phase.

Roland and Korg Fined £5.5m over UK Price Fixing

Thought this was interesting. I thought this was common practice?

via The Guardian

"The keyboard and electric drum kit makers Roland and Korg have been fined a combined total of £5.5m, as part of the UK competition watchdog’s crackdown on price fixing across the musical instrument industry.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said the companies had breached competition rules by restricting online discounting of their musical instruments. The practice, known as “resale price maintenance”, forced retailers to sell instruments at or above a minimum price.

The watchdog said Roland restricted pricing of its electronic drum kits and accessories between January 2011 and April 2018, while Korg did the same for its hi-tech music equipment and synthesisers between June 2015 and April 2018.

Roland was fined just over £4m and Korg £1.5m..."

Sequential Artist Spotlight Interview with JOSIE PACE & KEN ROBERTS

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"As the saturated synths rise behind the lyrics “Just take your stamp off my design” in Josie Pace’s driving single, “Battleground” we immediately understand this is not an artist who is weak when abandoned. Instead, this Detroit artist’s music represents a piece of her solitude. The blistering glow of downtempo post-industrial beats, electro-pop melodies and layered soundscapes are home to Josie’s captivating lyrics; she is a songwriter in the purest sense. The result is a pulsating sound that will haunt you with vulnerability while basking in Josie’s world of self-reflection and unapologetic rock and roll attitude that Detroit is legendary for.

When musician and producer Ken Roberts saw an acoustic performance of Josie he was blown away. The raw and intimate performance captured the one thing all songwriters strive to achieve: believability. The two started working together with Josie’s songs as the foundation. As an accomplished guitar player, Josie molds and refines her songs acoustically only to tear them apart and rebuild them with Roberts’ grinding synths, unique production style, and the addition of Mark Damian’s live drums. Songs quickly formed into a unique sound that pull from the likes of Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails yet contain a high-art fashion swagger as if you just bumped into David Bowie at a Halston Party.

From the beginning, the style and the art of the music are just as important as the melody and beat. Josie’s first music video Torn introduced audiences to her unique brand of electronic rock and visual artistry. That theme continues with the videos for Battleground, NO, My Mistake, Lies of the Lovers and Fire where fashion and desolation hold hands with Josie’s in-your-face performance. Perfect Replacement would follow featuring a collaboration with another fierce female, Sammi Doll (IAMX). Josie carries the same commitment of style and artistry to her high-energy live performances having shared the stage with Tim Skold (Marilyn Manson, KMFDM) Daniel Myer (Haujobb, Architect), Powerman 5000, Stabbing Westward, and <PIG> along with successful headlining shows in New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles.

We chatted with Josie and Ken on how they have been using Sequential instruments in their music."

"Here we have the incredibly rare, vintage, Crumar DP-80! (famously used on Radiohead's 'Everything In Its Right Place') Really reluctant to sell this but I just don't have space for it. It's in amazing condition especially for it age the only thing that doesn't work is the detune knob which i imagine its a very easy solder fix. The keyboard is pretty heavy so i would prefer collection but I am open to using a courier if organised and paid for by the buyer.
There really isn't a lot of info about this synth online so quite hard to price up fairly so for that reason i've put the price ridiculously high and will choose the best offer made."

Michael's Anthem (Kebu cover): Korg Radias, Arp Odyssey, Yamaha DX7, Moog Sub 37 & Nord Stage 2EX

Marcus Padrini

"In 2017, I recorded a video with a version of this great Kebu song. At the time, I did everything using only Korg Radias and a few other synths, without sequencing, playing just about everything live.

Recently, I had to move the synths to another space, think about a new dimension, position of each instrument, make all the audio, MIDI and electrical cables. After everything was ready, it was time to test the synth sequencing. The idea was to use that same structure as the version of Michael's Anthem (simply because I like it a lot), but now with new elements, sequenced synths to fill this humble version even more :)

This time, the lead was played with the DSI Tetra, great analog synth by Dave Smith. And the noise sweep filter effect was programmed on the Behringer MS-1. Sequencing on account, as always, of the Roland MC-808.

I'm still getting used to the position of the synths, suffering a little in the execution, with the lighting, etc. But soon, everything will be ready to start creating and recording again!'

Original version by Kebu posted back in 2012 here, followed by a live at PIUG performance here in 2016.

Moog Subsequent 25/Arabic: "Iram of the Pillars" (إرَم ذَات ٱلْعِمَاد)

Kris Lennox

"Different flavour of composition this time, with a piece after the famed lost city (currently I'm working on a lot of MENA music, hence something different). Great tone from the Moog (as always). Very interesting to hear synths used in this context (synth companies: take note. You're missing a trick...).

The MENA sector is growing at quite a rapid rate - not only in the world of music, but also in the world of business/finance.

This piece is a fusion of 'East meets West'. In terms of 'East', the non-standard scales should be obvious (still 12-TET here, of course. But that is part of the fusion). Less obvious will be the rhythm: the work is in 7/4, and the drumming sequences are three patterns:

1) Iqa' Nawakht
2) Iqa' Dawr Hindi
3) Iqa' Muhajjar.

With Iqa' Muhajjar, I'm treating it as a double-time 14/4 (i.e treating it as 7).

In terms of the above/if anyone is looking to study Arabic music: perhaps the best book/resource is 'Inside Arabic Music' by Johnny Farraj and Sami Abu Shumays. Released late last year, the book is a veritable tome of information. And very approachable. Good introduction - and far more.

There's potential for Arabic-styled synth music...

PS I'm reading from the score (score is sitting to the R), and playing along with the metronome for sync with parts in the DAW (added post).

PPS playing the bassline is no mean feat! Hugely offbeat/syncopated, only compounded by the time signature.

Enjoy/all best
Kris"

Fantasy Soundtracks Ep:4 'Invaders'

DreamsOfWires

"4th in a series of simple live jams inspired by some of my favourite vintage sci-fi and horror from the cinema and TV. I thought it'd be a fun idea to see what I can do with a simple setup, perhaps ony 2 analog synth voices, and modest digital effects. These will be inspired by the lo-fi, low-budget synthesizer soundtracks of the 70's and early 80's - often very simple, spartan compositions, which is what made them special I think.

In this video I'm just experimenting with the Sample & Hold module whilst I learn how to use it. See the subtiltles for an explanation of what you can hear. The modules used were 3 AJH Synth VCO's, 2 VCA's, the Sonic XV and Gemini filters, the Entropic Doom noise module, Fixed Filter Bank FFB 914, Contour Generators, Dual LFO, Ring SM, Precision Voltages, and the Sample & Hold. A little reverb is added courtesy of Audio Damage's EOS2.

I have fond memories of the film 'Invaders from Mars' after seeing it multiple times as a child, and finding it pleasingly creepy (despite some of it seeming a bit silly), I loved the idea of aliens living under the sand pit at the end of my garden. So, I re-watched it recently, and decided to dedicate a spot to it among my 'fantasy soundtracks' series.

Folktek Resonant Garden w/ Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"2018 Folktek Resonant Garden Standalone Synthesizer With Strings, Eurorack Patchable.

The Resonant Garden is an acoustic-electronic hybrid designed to create anything from beats and oddities to dense sound scapes.

The garden essentially utilizes three Alter circuits but each equipped with a mic pre-amp, and 4 garden (stringed) panels for generating acoustics. By plucking, rubbing, tapping or even bowing, those micro-acoustic sounds become amplified and effected by the Alter in any number of ways. In essence, the garden is a large microphone designed to pick up vibrations.

EFFECTS

There are two Alter 1 designs and 1 Alter 2. Each Alter 1 has seven different DSP effects which is selected by touching the copper hexagon:

1; long delay (capable of near infinite feedback looping)
2; tight, notated granular delay
3; huge plate reverb
4; shimmering reverb
5; distortion and multi-filter
6; pitch delay
7; stutter glitch

Alter 2 has the following effects:

1; analog delay
2; reverb with infinite capture and lp + hp filters
3; choral
4; palindrome reverse delay - backward/forward repeat
5; time stretch
6; pitch shift (notated semi-tones
7; time stretch glitch

CONTROL

On each of the Alter sections, the following is present:

- control for the gain of the mic pre-amp or any incoming audio.
- controls for mix, X, Y and filter as well as clock.
- all effects have a variation of a filter which may change effect to effect.
- X and Y control various rates.
- clock control adjusts the rate which controls the DSP which can drastically change the effect. In doing so it does slightly lower the quality of the output signal but the results are fantastic. This clock is not for synchronization.
- mix, X, Y and filter all have CV control inputs.
- Each control level or cv input is visualized on the control panel.

ACOUSTICS

Each garden panel is equipped with a contact mic. A contact mic is designed to pick up vibration. The mic pre-amp is specifically designed to deal with the frequencies of the contact mic by boosting certain frequencies and dulling others in order to optimize the sound quality. The mic pre-amp has a gain control so the level can be adjusted according to how you intend to play."

"Very nice Oberheim OB 8 with page 2 graphics and original factory MIDI. This was recently serviced by Switched On in Austin and everything is working as it should. All voices work/tune up properly and this thing sounds amazing.

The only minor issue is that the pots on the stereo out can be a bit scratchy but I mainly use the mono out."

Yamaha CS 60 MIDI controlled (HQ re-upload)

Rainer Keizer

"In this video you hear a very simple acid arpeggio, played through MIDI by my Yamaha CS 60 from 1977. The arpeggio is simple, but illustrates the control possibilities over MIDI, along with showing that a CS can even be used for fast stuff that can't be played by hand - it's not just a synth for pads :-)
Apart from playing the notes over MIDI, my CS 60 is controlled by my iPhone - Brilliance and VCF LFO depth.

This is a re-upload from 2013, from my abandoned YT account klorisk.

I just had my CS back from from repair by Mark Cox in The Netherlands. He fully serviced it and built in a marvellous MIDI interface of his own design. The CS now responds to MIDI Note On, to aftertouch and to four separate MIDI CCs to control VCO and VCF modulation, brilliance and level. On top of that, it can route velocity to brilliance and/or level. Even though velocity will then affect *all* playing notes, it gives more expressive capabilities. Mark’s interface is a lot cheaper than the Kenton one and provides slightly different but all the more useful possibilities.

More of my Yamaha CS 60 improvisations (and a lot more musical than this one):

Korg Minilogue XD: Dense Atmosphere (50 Ambient and Cinematic Pad presets)

Anton Anru

"«Dense Atmosphere» is a collection of 50 pad timbres for Korg Minilogue XD. It consists of: 19 Pads, 11 Strings, 6 Rhythmic, and 14 Drones and Textures.
The presets cover a wide range of sound palette: warm and cold, clean and noisy, dark and bright, musical and atonal, static and rhythmic. They will find their place in many music genres: ambient, cinematic, downtempo, lounge, chillout, deep, progressive, house, trance, techno, dub techno, and others.

All presets are thoroughly set: each has Velocity, Aftertouch, and XY Joystick. Moreover, to make the timbre more dynamic and evolving use Motion Modulation, all 4 slots are set as well. Just hit the PLAY button and keep on playing on keyboard.
All the timbres are done using factory oscillators and effects only, so no additional (third-party) SDK needed to use the collection.
To load the presets to your synth you should use Minilogue XD Sound Librarian application available on Korg official website.

"The 37-key Teisco 100F (also known as the Kawai 100F), released in Japan in 1977, is a fantastic little analog monophonic synthesizer. It features one oscillator, but great sound can be achieved by virtue of the extensive modulation possibilities. Filtering, LFO, VCA, and portamento are excellent and provide the necessary ingredients to dialing in wonderful vintage analog synth sounds. Add to these features the 100F’s elegant vintage design, with a wood enclosure, and you have overall a fantastic vintage analog synth."

"The 32-key Technics SY-1010, released in Japan in the 1970s, is a little analog monophonic synthesizer. It features one saw-up oscillator, a low pass filter, ASDR, and a sine wave LFO. This is one of the most simple commercial analog synthesizers ever made, and although it may not offer the biggest variety of sounds, it remains a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item. And honestly, overall it’s still a nice little vintage analog synth. This synth is in very good condition, with the expected aging of a vintage instrument (please see photos), including some yellowing of the keys, some scratches, and other coloration. However, the unit has been thoroughly tested by our professional technician and works perfectly."
