Wing Drum

Wing Drum - internal sounds video upload by Gecho Loopsynth

"In the Wing Drum you can find a few sounds of real and also synthesized instruments. Most of them are stored as samples, but that is not the only sound engine implemented. The last timbre in this video is generated from a wave-table.

Two buttons on top select between metallic (represented by robot icon) and wooden timbre (tree icon). What you can hear in this demo are only the first experimental sounds, more will be added. The idea is to have 4 or 5 of each kind of timbres."

Wing Drum - MIDI controller functionality

"All sounds in this video come from Korg Volca FM or Modal CRAFTsynth.

The Wing Drum can act as a MIDI controller too (that's what the middle connector is for). It sends out the stream of data at all times, including velocity information and, thanks to motion sensor, it emulates two controllers: pitch bend (by tilting left and right), and continuous controller (by tilting back and forth). This is how it can be used to control some other small (or large) synthesizer, anything that has a native MIDI input.

Of course you could play the same notes on these synths, but Wing Drum may be handier and easier to use, since it presents 9 notes of your desired scale in a very accessible way."

via phonicbloom

"HOW IT WORKS

Easily switching between modes you can play sounds of a handpan, steel tongue drum, xylophone or glockenspiel with up to 6 voices polyphony. Touch pads in the wings consist of a few segments and they are sensitive to how much of the wing area your finger covers. This allows you to play softer or louder sounds dynamically.

Or you can connect its MIDI output to another synth and use it as a controller, expanding the range of sounds without limits. The built‑in accelerometer acts as pitch bend / continuous controller depending on the axis of rotation. Velocity information is transmitted too.

The Wing Drum can be played by anyone at home, outdoors, in the studio, therapist's office, classroom, meditation session or at the live performance.

The round shell is about 15cm / 6" wide and 5cm / 2" tall. It is made from solid wood sealed with natural oils to protect and show the natural beauty of the wood. The top panel is made from fiberglass laminated with matte black polymer or white enamel with gold plated metal elements. It is controlled using 5 buttons made from soft silicone."

Korg Wavedrum demo - sounds/FX presets showing layering and expression

"An impromptu demo of the some of the wild/unusual sounds/FX, layering, and expression available in the original Korg Wavedrum (recent Wavedrum Global is even better). All FX are internal. Definitely not my best drumming ever, but it was a lot of fun to make the demo. :-)

There is no MIDI or trigger in/out on the unit, but given the complexity if the triggering and layering I’m not surprised they went this way instead - it’s a self-contained instrument ready for experimentation and aimed at proper hand drummers.

As I explain in the video, the Wavedrum allows full velocity and pressure control to trigger sounds and mods per patch. A contact mic in the frame allows triggers of secondary sounds & FX. The sensitivity if the mic allows multi sound triggering based on intensity of the strike. The frame has guiro-style nubs on either side to allow more expression for the contact mic to pickup (rapid “taps”, etc). The recent Wavedrum Global model has double the presets (combined from WD original and WD oriental) and better pressure response and volume output (a known issue of the original). It’s a nice unit, but still has no MIDI."

Ambient jam with the Sequential Take 5

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live ambient track performed entirely on the Sequential Take 5, using only the on-board effects.

The Sequential Take 5 is not revolutionary in any particular way: it's a five-voice, subtractive, analog polysynth with on-board effects. But no matter how I look at it, the Take 5 is clearly the current best first choice if you're looking to buy a versatile analog synth that can do it all. It's got fantastic build quality, good keybed with full-sized keys and aftertouch, and on-board effects that sound better to my ears than others in its range. Its oscillators and filter are good, and its bass response is stronger than most polysynths I've played with. The mod matrix is simple to use but has plenty of depth. One of the effects is a high-pass filter, which allows you to carve out the midrange for your pad work. The filter drive doesn't offer much, but the separate distortion adds a lot. The layout is intuitive, workflow is fast, and you can get to making patches with very little effort.

I've got synths I like more for bass, pads, and leads, but I've got no one synth that can do all of them this well. This was a pad patch I made with some vibrato, "vintage" fluctuations in tuning and envelopes, the bucket-brigade-style delay, long reverb, and a nice slow set of envelopes on the filter and amp. I started playing and this song came out, a good example of how the sounds can inspire.

If you've got a bunch of synths already, you probably don't need this one. (I mean, let's be honest that we don't need any of them.) But if you're looking for that one synth that can play a lot of roles really well, the Take 5 would be the one I'd recommend.

Thanks for listening."

Cherry Audio Introduces Stardust 201 🌠 | Roland RE-201 Space Echo Emulation

video upload by Cherry Audio

"Stardust 201 Tape Echo is a hot-rodded interpretation of the classic Roland "Space Echo" tape echo effects of the 70s and 80s. With the inclusion of a spring reverb and chorus effects in some models, the Space Echo was truly groundbreaking with its fantastic variety of sound colors.

Stardust 201 precisely recreates the limited fidelity and stability of audio tape, providing a natural rolloff of bass and treble frequencies for super-warm tonality and minor speed variances, lending an organic chorusing quality to repeats. Cranking the intensity knob overloads the circuit, generating the signature other-worldly runaway echoes and feedback that only a tape echo can produce.

Cherry Audio's Stardust 201 Tape Echo includes features from the original RE-201 and RE-301 Space Echo units, and we've added some of our own to create a great-sounding, super-flexible, ideal tape echo effect that never breaks down and never needs demagnetizing, all for less than the price of a Space Echo replacement audio tape loop!"

Interesting problem with it - bad caps?

"This is an extremely rare synth that tends to sell in the $2,000 ballpark. Absolutely crazy warm fat analog sounds. When I bought this two of the voices didn't work. I took it to an electronic tech who spent 40+ hours completely going through the unit. All of the voices have been repaired with exceedingly difficult to find chips and a bunch of bad traces were fixed. After getting the synth fully functioning the tech noticed that after an hour or so a kind of static happens when you press the keys. He seemed to think the issue was with the power supply. At that point I was so deep into repairs and he had spent so much time on it that we mutually decided to hold off on any further repairs. I only use the synth for studio work and never play longer than an hour to track parts anyway so I never even had to deal with the static. I imagine a person could take this into a tech and get the power supply looked and solve this issue. It's just something I didn't want to pursue as it never really affected me. That being said I certainly can't ask $2,000 for it."

Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Synthesizer | live ambient industrial noise & drones exploration | #1

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine & Strymon Bigsky. Here are the best parts from the first hour or so I spent with this amazing synthesizer. I tuned each of the eight oscillators to a random scale before recording in an attempt to create something semi-melodic and harmonic (rather than just noise). I felt my way around and let the Lyra lead the way.

I hadn't read the manual - just watched a few video on Youtube. I made this video to give other folk a rough idea of what they might expect the first time they play it, provided you approach this instrument with an already basic understanding of now synthesizers work.

Patch Notes: Qasim Naqvi

video upload by FACTmagazine

"Pakistani-American musician Qasim Naqvi is perhaps best known as a founder member of acoustic trio Dawn of Midi, in which he has played drums since 2007. Outside of his work in Dawn of Midi, Naqvi is an accomplished solo artist whose compositions have been performed by ensembles including the London Contemporary Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and soundtracked many films and documentaries.

Naqvi’s recent solo releases, such as 2019’s Teenages and 2020’s Beta, have made extensive use of synthesizers and modular systems. In this episode of Patch Notes, we invited Naqvi to perform at Pioneer Works, a non-profit cultural center in Redhook, Brooklyn.

'The building dates back to 1866 and was originally a railroad track factory,' Naqvi says. 'Now it’s a massive performing arts space. With my equipment, I was merging two systems that I’ve been configuring for a couple of years, a Verbos System and a Serge System. I also used a few random modules to connect everything: a Quad VCA from Intellijel and an X-Pan stereo module from Make Noise as the final output.'

'The acoustics are massive at Pioneer Works and we set everything up where the audience usually stands, so I was facing the house system,” he explains. “It was quite powerful to feel the music coming directly at me from this monstrous system. It definitely affected my choices. I wanted to embrace the full dynamic feel of the space, by exploring a range of highly dense sounds to rhythmic ideas, to more sparse and quiet moments. It was also a hellishly hot day and there was no AC in the building. At a certain point it felt like a clay oven.'

The piece Naqvi performs is called ‘Yes Mammal’, and was originally titled ‘Music for Modular Synthesizer, Dim Lamp and One Developing Melody.’ 'I wrote it in June for my first show in New York after a year and a half of not performing,' he explains. 'It’s evolved since then and I wanted to share it with Fact.'

'My background for a long time has been in acoustic music, where I write pieces and then share them with a group or individual to interpret. And from there they’ve made it into something larger. With the modular, I’ve been translating that way of thinking. Lately, I write a piece or a sketch and give it to an entity, in this case the synthesizer, and let it expand the music to more than just notes on the page. This piece is loosely written and I improvise with the material using the infinite possibilities of the modular synthesizer to give it shape in the moment. I like to think of it as live orchestration but with voltage.'

Naqvi has typically used this large-scale modular setup in the past to perform, but more recently he’s been experimenting with slimmed down systems to use in live performance settings. 'I’m making different and smaller hybrid configurations that are more tailor-made to the pieces I’m writing,” he says. “I still use this whole system when needed but it’s been an interesting exercise to slim down from time to time and make more with less.'

Naqvi’s most recent release is an EP titled Chronology, which was released on on Erased Tapes. 'It was made entirely on a very old and broken Minimoog synthesizer. It’s a special album that I made with a great relic.'

New Synthesizers.com Q169 OSCILLATOR++ In the Works

via @eriksuperlazy

"I was looking at the @synthesizersdotcom Q167 LFO++ the other day and almost bought a couple more used Q106 oscillators last week. Meanwhile, I'm lucky enough to have gotten a message from James of Synthesizers.com to meet up with a few others for dinner while he's in town, and look at what he drops in front of me. Still very much a prototype, but what a powerful beast of a prototype! I'll be one of the first in line for one of these sets when it comes out. If you were on the fence about jumping into 5U, it's never been easier. Start with a Box4 or Box11 and get that QPS6+ power supply and start adding modules."

GuinGuin Instruments MME DIY Eurorack Minimoog Clone

The following are some initial details via GuinGuin's Julien Delgoulet on the Modwiggler forum:

PCB, rare parts and Panel kits available here.

Build guide with BOM on github.

My name is Julien Delgoulet, I'm a synth DIY passionate from a little town in France called Brive-La-gaillarde. I usually spend my time lurking on muff, matrixsynth , electro-music.com when I'm not repairing, moding or designing synth related circuits.

For quite a long time, I dream to own a Minimoog but never had the cash to buy one ...

About a year ago, a friend of mine get one and, after playing a few times with it, I decided to give it a go. (By that time, I did not know that this project will fill all my nights and week-ends ... fortunatly I have a
wonderfull wife  )

The initial target was to make an exact replica but finally ends up with what I call "Mini-modules" (Think ARP like sub-modules for Filter, VCO etc) for any format : eurorack / Moog 5U, you name it. Also, they could fit behind a "real minimoog sized panel".

All the design are exact replica of the Minimoog rev 2.0 (the one based on CA3046 expo converters) and are all using thru-whole components (excepted a few components that only exist in SMD packages)

So, let me introduce you the idea of "Mini-modules" and the control boards that actually "activate" them.

There will be 6 "Mini-modules":

- VCO
- VCA/Preamp
- VCF
- VCF Env
- VCA Env
- Noise/mod-mix/glide

There will be also 7 "Controller boards" :
- One for each mini-module (so you get an eurorack version of each for example).
- Another, my favorite one, which is 60HP eurorack version where 3VCOs, VCF etc plug into. ( I choose 60 HP so that if you have a 84HP case, you still have some room for a real LFO, a midi/CV interface etc)

At the moment, everything works great, I'm finalizing the "Mini-modules" and the 60 HP Controller Board to hold them.

To give you an idea of the progress made so far , here are some pictures of old prototypes and "Mini-modules" eagle boards. More to come in a few days...

As you might except, this will be a DIY project and I will propose PCBs, BOMs and schematics so that "everyone" can build his own Mini ;-)

I'm so thrilled to expose this project to you guys ,particularly on muff (where I've been more than a lurker and not very helpfull to the communtiy) and
hope you are excited as I am about this project now it is not "secret" anymore

"The fabulous and uncommon Roland sequencer from the fabled System 100: outstanding in its own right, or an essential part of your journey to building a full System 100 rig to rival the Death Star. Excellent and full-featured - this is perfect if you seek old school analogue sequence action to spice up your synthlife."

String King: Sequential OB-6, Alesis MIDIVerb II X 2, QuadraVerb, Audiothingies Doctor A, CME XKey

video upload by

"Exploring the softer side of the OB-6, this time with the CME XKey 37 for polyphonic aftertouch. Most of the reverb is coming from the Alesis vintage rack stack: MV II Preset 28 (XLarge Warm 5s), MVII Preset 29 (XLarge Warm 15s), QV Preset 75 (Taj Mahal). The Audiothingies Doctor A adds some modulated delay and a small touch of concert hall reverb. The polyphonic aftertouch on the CME XKey is very difficult to control, and I've got the sensitivity turned all the way down. The cool thing is that any chords played on the XKey will have a natural chorus effect, as it's impossible to play all the notes with the same amount of downward pressure. Flaws (and lack of ability) aside, the results with the XKey can be stunning, so I'm keeping it for now."

JL COOPER 16X20 MIDI PATCH BAY MSB 16/20

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"One used MIDI patchbay with 16 IN and 20 OUT ports in excellent used condition. Comes with documentation. This plugs in to 110 AC so no wallwart. From a home nonsmoking studio. I'm selling because my MIDI setup is much smpler now.

The MSB 16/20 allows any of 16 IN ports to go to 1 or more OUT ports. (The reverse isn't true because there is no MIDI merge.) You can also build patch assignments and then save them to 64 stored programs. Recalling them is just a button push or two. Finally once you have assigned these patch assignments you can also send the MSB program changes from a remote MIDI device.

There is a battery backup and you can see from the pictures that the 3 volt battery is putting out 3.4 volts so its in good shape."

Hi Everyone,

Still working on getting myself up to speed in the new space digging into the gear and warming myself up. I made a 127 bpm something track, pretty minimal, upbeat but still pretty relaxed and dreamy. The star in this track is the Avalon Bassline, doing what it does best... square wave goodness is all over the place.

I also have some work to do fixing with the camera setup and different angles, this is a pretty complex challenge that will take some time given the angled ceilings that i have in the new space. While waiting there will be a few of these single and/or maybe dual cam videos for a little while... please have some patience while i get this sorted.

Play this one loud and in the dark for best effect.

Modular Upbeat Performance (Berklee System, My system, Verbos Modular System, Doepfer A-155 System)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
I made a little upbeat piece utilizing Berklee's modular systems in conjunction with my own system. The bass you hear is made with Berklee's small Cwejman Module inventory of VCO-6 and MMF-1. If you have any specific questions about the patch ask me in the comment section, I will happily answer.
Everything was tracked directly from the VCAs into all of the inputs on the Zoom L-12 multitrack mixer into an Ableton session. Most of the reverbs and effects were from Ableton.

"FB-7999 is a software instrument for Microsoft Windows (VST) and Apple macOS (VST/AU) simulating the KORG DW-6000 and DW-8000 synthesizers from the 1980s. It is written in native C++ code for high performance and low CPU consumption. Main features are:

- Two digital oscillators with 16 + 16 different waveforms
- Poly and Unison modes
- Built-in pseudo-stereo delay
- SysEx data communication, import and export
- Extended polyphony (up to 64 voices)
- Supports MTS-ESP by ODDSound dynamic micro-tuning
- Resizable user interface (not "N" version!)
- MIDI Learn – all parameters can be controlled by MIDI CC
- Plug-in supports Windows and macOS (32 bit and 64 bit)

Special credits go to Gerald Murer and Ben Martin who provided tons of samples of their DW-6000/8000 machines and, together with Kraftraum, did the Beta testing."

Crystallizer Presets on Drum Loops

video upload by

"A few of the factory presets on a simple old school drum machine loop. So many variations from simple to way out.Try more of the presets or your own creations on all kinds of drum and percussion loops.

Note: If it sounds out of time it could be one of two things, it takes a second for the 'Splices' to get caught up in the Recycle loops, or it's a funky weird thing and it's out of time. BUT it might still be cool."

"This Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 is owned by Billy Corgan

First off cosmetically speaking this keyboard is in very good condition. The wood frame has hardly any blemishes and the metal frame is in great shape as well. It's hard to believe how old this unit really is.

Serial#:0450

All of the keys function and the only thing we have noticed is that a couple of the buttons have small issues. The "Alternate" keyboard mode button still functions but may need to be replaced as it's not very "clicky" and doesn't immediately engage every time you press it. Bank 8 button on the upper bank selection section sometimes gets caught underneath the chassis when you press it but it does happen every time and it still functions.

It would likely benefit to get this synth serviced which would likely solve these small issues. Overall this thing is in superb shape and it would be an insanely cool addition for any serious player/producer!"

"A rare and quirky machine for sure. Esoteric, sought-after (now!) and very much its own thing. This unit is in almost MINT condition. The distinctive design has helped make this a classic...dual oscillation and capacitive membrane keyboard! The sounds are a bit mad once you get your head around the operation. Works off 'C' batteries or a dc supply (9volt 1amp recommended)(I did have a psu but had to use it for another machine). Just come back from service by Kent Spong (keyboard tech genius). If you want a collectable - and/or some really interesting sounds to play - this is it. Comes with user manual/leaflet and a t-shirt!"

I confirm :)
It's, a very flexible beast with a lot of character. For me it's perfect source of strange, powerfull and undescridable sounds. I have reached half the number of Vostok's sounds described by Analogue Solutions so I decided to move on ;)
If you are an enthusiast, looking for rare gear, that gives oportunities to explore the new galaxies of sounds, Vostok 2020 is a perfect choice !!

Comes with:
1. original, pins, patch cables, parts, box and flyers
2. Custom made case from Barczak Cases"

Analogue Solutions Telemetry SN 5396

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Extremely rare Analog Solutions Telemetry.

Think vintage Moog Rogue with 3 sub oscillators CV-Abillity over most parameters, EMS style looping envelope and pin matrix that accepts external input!!

Buyer should have a basic understanding of modular synthesis as there was never manual written for for this item, and aside from VCF>VCA nothing is normalized.

*Note the telemetry is fairly sensitive to how it receives CV. When I used my keystep the light from the octave switch blinking would cause a change in pitch on CV, but controlling from a Matriarch had absolutely no issues. More than likely a grounding issue with the keystep, so keep this in mind.

Includes powersupply and 10 original pins, plus original factory Analogue Solutions sticker."
