here is another update from the Ultimate MIDI Card project for the Amstrad CPC!

By now, I have a Python .MID file converter so that I can create MIDI songs for the Ultimate MIDI card on the PC / Mac. Previously, I was recording the complete song .MID MIDI stream in realtime with the CPC. The MIDI message stream was created with a MID file player such as MIDIBAR running on the PC, and then simple fed into the CPC via a USB-2-DIN MIDI cable. For complex multi-track and highly polyphonic MIDI, this was a bit at the limit of what the CPC and BluePill microcontroller can handle, and thus sometimes resulted in dropped or hangind notes for complex MIDI. Hence, a more stable solution was required - the Python-based converter.

Here is a demo of complex converted .MID song played back from CPC memory. Most CPC-users have 512 KBs of extended RAM memory available - the DK'tronics 512 KB RAM expansion is a "standard" even for contemporary CPC RAM expansions. My CPC "converted .MID" player supports 512 KBs of RAM - this is large enough to fit this ~ 96 KBs large BIN song into memory; enjoy the smooth sound of the X2GS sound module plugged into the S2-compatible header at the back of the card."

Todays jam was something different I had been wanting to try. Its very simple, and way more about the visuals. I liked the idea of having the the glitch effects play at the same time as Im jamming, so I shot them to my projector and filmed the silhouette. I need to fool around with getting my idea for the effect perfect but I liked how it came out. In my mind I was thinking of the old Earth Wind and Fire videos with the trails everywhere they moved. I always loved those and all kinds of trippy effects really. They're fun. Hope you enjoyed this as well as my Jamuary feed. Back to our regularly scheduled programming. This patch is quite simple, just a DPO drone, Bresnso going into a stereo filter (Popple) with Falistri used as double-envelope. Everything was driven by Fraptools Usta sequencer. Some randomness here and there using Fraptools Sapèl."

"I started a new microscope life channel that will feature original synth music, mostly from modular to add to the mood.

My launch video today features some ambient space music from a Korg Wavestation A/D for all parts, made on an RC-505 looper (DAWless). For now it’s interesting visuals with synth music.

One of my upcoming videos will feature microbes found on synths and drum machines: cables, keys, pads, buttons, and strips... and chairs/floors. Should be fun 😀 it might get folks to dust and clean the studio more often."

And: "The critters here came from a local park and a pond.
The tardigrade came from dry moss and I brought him out of stasis by oaking the moss.
The spider was on the moss before I soaked it (extra bonus).

Tardigrades can survive very harsh conditions and 'resurrect'.
NASA even took them into space and they survived!"

"The challenge with this one was to use the Dreadbox - Nymphes, 4-voice analog polyphonic synth, as only instrument for the whole track, without any external effects! (only some EQ/comp for mixing purposes).
I'm not a big fan of the Nymphes' internal reverb, but had to use it for this track.
As I also wanted to have a kind of delay effect on the SEQ track (heard on the left speaker), I had to do it manually by re-recording a 2nd SEQ track (heard on the right speaker) after having shifted the MIDI notes of the first SEQ track 😅

I initially composed this track with the Conductive Labs - NDLR sequencer. I recorded its MIDI output in my DAW and later did some editing, adding some pitch bends, notes for transitions, etc.

I was quite surprised of how this little synth can be so versatile and sound fat! (There's been a lot of talk about its user interface, and indeed, I would have preferred either a small screen or a larger surface too!)"

Patch of The Week: Choir Sound 1 - Tutorial with patch chart and demo performance

"A simple choir-like timbre using multiple VCOs, including examples with 3 different filters, how to use modulation to add realism, a short performance demonstration, and patch diagram at the end (with notes and full downloadable patch sheet in the description).
This version uses 3 analogue oscillators, being modulated separately, to simulate the imperfect tuning of multiple human voices singing together. There are more advanced methods to create vocal-like sounds, such as those used in synths like the Roland VP330, but it can be difficult (and possibly hugely expensive) to represent the components used within the modular domain. However, if a comparable sound is achieved in a modular format then the degree to which it can be tweaked and customised is limitless, which can't be said for the self-contained instruments of the past.

"My last jam for Jamuary 2022 is a Berlin School / Ambient piece on the Korg modwave synthesizer, using a custom arpeggiator-driven patch with four parts. I play the arpeggiators and do live sound design during the jam, with explanatory text overlays in the video. Its a lot of fun using the modwave as a multitimbral synth with the help of its amazingly powerful modulation matrix and motion sequencing capabilities.

Patch description:

Layer A Osc 1 Arp Melody and Bass
Layer A Osc 2 Arp Bass and Melody
Layer A Noise Light percussion
Layer B Osc 1 Arp Melody
Layer B Osc 2 Arp Melody

Each track's volume can be controlled independently using the four Mod Knobs, so I can fade each track in and out.

The oscillators on each layer share the arpeggiator, the filter and the effects.

The oscillator on each track has it's own amplitude envelope, using Osc 1 and Osc 2 envelopes.

Motion sequence lanes A-D modifies the notes played by the arpeggiator, adding silence/rests, holding notes, adding ratchets, adding glide, or shifting the notes up or down by an octave or a fifth.

So even though there are only two arpeggiators, one for each layer, each of the four tracks appears to have it's own unique rhythm and melody.

The ModWheel is used to set Filter Cutoff frequency for Layer B.

The KAOSS pad is used to modulate the Wavetable Position and Morph (Stretch) for Oscillator 1 on Layer B.

The audio is recorded to SD card on a Zoom R-16 mixer/recorder and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 17."

"What is BlueARP DM
BlueARP DM (DM stands for Desktop Module) is an advanced 8-channel pattern arpeggiator with a core derived from BlueARP plugin (which has been around since 2012). This is a result of 4 years of development and 1 year of beta-testing and fine-tuning. It is a boutique device, hand-manufactured in small quantities. Currently available in two colors: semi-transparent blue and white with black engravings.

BlueARP DM delivers 8 independent arpeggiators (or instances) in a single box; each of these instances is essentially a separate BlueARP plugin. It shares the core logic programmed in C with the plugin, but delivers rock-solid MIDI timing, thanks to its powerful Cotrex-M4 ARM CPU, and some extra stuff like CV/Gate connectivity to modular synths. BlueARP DM has plenty of connectivity for such a small box.

2 midi input and 4 midi output ports;
USB A port accepting USB-MIDI controllers;
4 analog outputs acting as CV or gates;
analog input to accept pulse clock from the modular;
SD Card to store and recall presets;


BlueARP DM a self-contained hardware device: you can edit, save and recall arpeggio patterns on the unit without a computer. Its interface a ‘old-school’ and it was inspired by early-days music computers and hardware sequencers. Still there’s enough space on two large 256×64 pixel OLED screens. "Today I spoke with my mom - and it's just... hard to see parents age (I lost my dad about 12 years ago now). Sometimes it seems like, maybe he was the lucky one to go when he was younger and didn't have these problems. Pain just seems to turn into the daily terror, haunting every part of your life. I sit here and know there's nothing I can do, except sit here and listen, and hope that things improve... and yet, we are all tending towards that end....

As for this track - well, I've been trying to get back into using the Spectralis in different ways. Here, I've taken all the drums, routed them into the 12db MM filter and used the HP filter with resonance at 100% And the cutoff around 30db, which really causes the bass to come out. Piano and strings from the Spectralis as well.

All sounds sent through Eventide Blackhole VST."

In 1988 Korg released the M1R Musicworkstation rackmount synthesizer. It featured everything from the M1 Musicworkstation minus the keyboard.The expansion slots were similar however the M1R uses the M1R-EX package over the M1's M1-EX edition.

Considered by Korg to be the first workstation type of instrument where it kept everything completely self contained with it's own built in sounds and effects while also able to connect outside itself through MIDI.

M1 sounds features 16 voices in single mode and 8 voices in double mode. It also has Combination mode which allows the user to play up to 8 single programas layered or split across it's 61 key keyboard.

The high quality digital PCM samples offer a variety of acoustic, synthesizer, and drum/percussion sounds. It also has a wide variety of onboard effects with 2 effects blocks. the instrument also features 2 expansion slots using Korg's proprietary ram and rom cards. 1 slot for sample rom expansion and the other for program/combination expansion for up to an extra 100 each. The sequencer offered up to 77,000 events but was reduced to 44,000 when the memory is allocated to 100 programs/combinations."

The packs come with patches for Kontakt, Logic Pro, Ableton Live and TAL-Sampler. The Kontakt version has an excellent user interface script.

Every sampler has a different sound and character. So each format will differ slightly from the others. The raw sounds, however, all sound the same in each format. Bear this in mind when listening to the audio demos."

"This rare PPG 2.2 is 8 bit resolution for a more "grainy" and "hairy" sound which many prefer over the higher resolution 2.3 model. For the age, this PPG has been very well cared for and is in amazing condition. A full inspection have been done by Mecanik Synthetik in Montreal including a general cleaning and some parts replacement.

PHYSICAL CONDITION : Excellent. The top, sides, and back have numerous small scratches and scuffs. The face plate is spotless and looks brand new.

In order to protect the PPG from future scratches, I have carefully applied a matte black vinyl on all 3 surfaces which make it look brand new. (Picture available on demand). This vinyl can be removed at the request of the buyer to deliver it in its original condition.

WORKING CONDITION : Excellent - All keys work perfectly. MIDI implementation is perfect, CV/TRIGGER In and Out are working well, the sequencer works, the filters go from a warm glow to a full scream, the sounds are rad, and this is an incredible specimen of this synthesizer. This synth works wonderfully.

• OS Version 8.3

• 8 bit resolution for a more "grainy" and "hairy" sound which many prefer over the higher resolution 2.3 model.

'I bought this from one of the original designers, Ben Rizzi, around 1993. He kept it solely at his New Jersey studio, so it was in beautiful condition. I’ve used it on countless recordings since then, and have kept it exclusively at my home studio, so it’s in pristine cosmetic shape. It’s just been serviced, but of course it’s a fragile instrument, so I’d suggest local pickup. I understand that turning it on often is a good idea. Really a characterful sounding keyboard (largely because it runs optical discs). I first became aware of it through some of Kraftwork’s recordings. After I bought this, I took apart an older one I had, so it also comes with a box of spare parts. Comes with 5 optical discs - Pipe Organ, Sax, Vocal Choir (2), and Cello. The entire original set is available online.'”

The following is the description from the listing:

"After much soul searching, I've decided to sell my Original R.A. Moog Model D MiniMoog. I remember getting in the car with my dad and driving up to Trumansburg in the summer of 1970.My dad played a Hammond B3 and was so intrigued with creating new sounds. We were going to meet Dr. Moog and possibly buy something. After an amazing exhibition of the many synths on display, my dad purchased this MiniMoog model D Serial #1003 The 3rd One Ever Made!

This beautiful MiniMoog has been well cared for its entire life. It has been played on many studio recordings, and used on a number of live performances as well. It has always been well maintained and serviced. Everything functions correctly and sounds great! The only issue is that the AC cord was damaged and had to be repaired. Also a tiny piece of wood chipped off many years ago, a purely cosmetic damage. These early MiniMoogs can be temperamental, so having a qualified technician to maintain it is very important.

There's not much more to say...If you're reading this you already know that these early MiniMoogs Model D's created some of the Fattest and Juiciest synth tones ever!! Countless artists play and record with them and they continue to be the most desirable synth ever made. You should also know that serial # 1001, and 1002 are in museums, so this Model D MiniMoog #1003 is the earliest production model in private hands. I'm open to offers, but please be realistic. I would love this to be picked up in person, and I'm willing to drive 100+ miles to deliver personally. The thought of handing it over to UPS/FedEx is scary, but that said I will ship it double boxed and "overpacked" to insure a safe arrival. This MiniMoog holds a special place in my heart, my hopes are for a new owner who will continue to play, love, and enjoy it as much as it has been for the past 50+ years"
